It didn't sound like it was an emergency stop. It was already slowing down for some other reason, then the engineer made a deeper air set. We will never know why. The "popping" sound was knuckles adjusting under the changing slack load. An emergency application of brakes is a very distinctive sound accompanied by a loud burst of air being vented from the relief valve on each car. Unless I just couldn't hear it in this video...
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954!
@@christopherdibble5872 They are not drunk anymore.
@@schinbone0lmfao that’s supposed to be a secret
@@dustin4 Man the stories the old heads would tell..........Only sober guy was running the train, that guy had worked the RR for 2 weeks. Not even a qualified brakeman yet.........and they let him run. WTF🤣

Thanks for taking the time to bring us this video. After living through East Palestine tragedy and Springfield Ohio crash I would question standing that close to any NS train in Ohio.
My pleasure. And I understand your concern. I don't know if I'd run or keep filming if a derailment happened while I was vidioing.
@traindude 28 Totally understand. I have been in transportation over 40 years - 10 working for RJ Corman railroad and crash recovery. It does happen often but not too often with the dire consequences as East Palestine.
always In ohio 😂😂😭💀💀💀💀
Turn off the news media ......lots of fear was worked up over this, NS is just as safe as any railroad.
thanks for thw catch and glad your back..
Lived in Michigan for 55 years and am in Georgia now. I was shocked at how shallow the water lines are here. With this cold snap lots of lines froze and broke.
I live in Michigan, believe it or not it’s in the 40s today
A friend of mine lives up in the UP and they've had a lot of snow. But that's like a different world up there.
Also, my late wife grew up in Rochester, MI.
@@MeigsCountyRR Yeah, the UP can get cold and snowy. I knew a girl born and raised there tell me when she was a kid a family from Alaska moved in a few houses down from them. After 3 years they moved back to Alaska where "the winters not so bad."
@@adriansmith1358 My sons in Traverse City. He said last week they had snow above his knees but it's already melted and in the 40s now.
Yeah hey hi there just stumbled across your video thought I'd comment because you were saying stop by and say hi so I'm just wanted to say thanks for standing out in the cold to get this video I agree with you I heard a pop I believe it was an air hose popping off or it popped a hole in the hose somewhere but I think that's why he went into emergency would have been need to if you would have continued it though.
That loud pop is the air line being dumped for emergency brake application. You're hearing it just evacuate all the air in the lines to full apply the brakes.
No snow yet? He stopped so you could jump onboard!
We had a dusting, but it was gone by noon.
In US he should end in jail because this lol
If it were emergency, the emergency brakes would be applied which would create a VERY loud squealing sound, which takes around 20 seconds to stop. This was just the regular stop or dyanmic braking a freight train would do which takes around a minute at a normal speed. The "popping" sound is actually just the knuckles crashing into each other due to the dyanmic brakes applied. If something actually happened to the train it was probably just a airhose issue or stuff.
Yea I was actually listening for the air to dump
I got this figured out. The hospital is by the track so you can watch trains while you stay there.
They got the same situation in Belleville, Ontario, Canada - CPKC main between Toronto and Montreal goes right past the back of the hospital, with a road crossing at each end! My brother, a retired doctor, had to stay there recently - he was NOT impressed!!
Glad to have ya back MCR! Wishing you the best of health this new year! Great shot. I heard the bang too. Bet it was a busted air hose.
Thank you for the well wishes. It means a lot.
It seemed to start slowing down around the 1:15 mark, but did not hear anything at that point.
That wasn't an Emergency stop. it was a simple stop for a signal or a crew change. he made a minimum service application "Air Brakes" followed by dynamic braking, hence the run in sound you hear as the train is bunching up. had it been an emergency brake application, you would hear the control valves on each car dumping all of the air followed by screeching wheels and an abrupt stop
In new zealand we have a hospital name middamore hospital in otahuhu auckland building next to the railway station for the wounded soldiers in ww2
Your picture was great; no shaking at all. He lost his air; line broke lose.
Great video @3:56 it's not fair they can't use the scanner to keep track of how long this train is or when i come to it stop
I agree. But legislators think it's easier t make blanket laws that cover everything instead of specifying frequencies.
This is not an emergency stop, the driver saw a “problem” and engaged the dynamic brakes.
If you want to hear a emergency stop, you have to hear a distinctive “pop-hiss” sound coming from the train.
My medically frail autistic train obsessed 14 year old said in his best and deepest Arkansas accent about why there are train tracks in front of a hospital...
"Welll, ah reckon they put the hospital there for when the train skeers a feller half ta death!"
That's precious! Bless his heart! 😀
Thanks 👍 for sharing
Thanks for watching!

Nice video, I lived in Sweetwater for a bit and worked for the Athens Ice Company
I go to Sweetwater a lot, too. Of course I have to travel, as there are no railroads in Meigs County. It's the same line that runs through Athens, Niota, and Sweetwater up to Knoxville. I lived in Athens for a while. It's a nice place.
1:54 maybe the cause, look at the short intermodal white car, it looks damaged.
Hello from the UK. Hope y'all have a great New Year.
Thanks! Same to you. :)
Wasn't an emergency stop the air wasn't released that was a normal stop using the breaks probably for a signal or something. If it were emergency there'd be a loud rush of air being released and then deafening squealing and it'll take like 20-30 seconds to stop.
My guess is he had an air hose come uncoupled, and sent the train into emergency.
That's what I figure. It must have been close to the front, as it didn't take too lone to fix.
Thanks
Nice catch
Thanks!
The hospital comment, you have to put it somewhere!
Hello!! Fine video, not shaky at all. Man! I'd hate to be the conductor to walk the train. 👍🏼
Thanks!
Carry a radio scanner with you so you can listed to railroad radio traffic.
like the video man! keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate it. :)
Intermodal posse in the house.
Hello.
Nah that wasn't an emergency application. That pop sounded like a coupler shifting. An emergency application would sound like a very sudden and rapid discharge of air followed by a lot of screeching brakes.
great video 🚅🚅👍
Thanks! 😀
Nice video. Just subscribed too
Thanks and thank you! :)

People can get mad at the train, but the train Hass to go by anyway other people they get pissy and mad just take a different route like quit throwing a fit about it. Katrina has a problem and it needs attention.
Just wondering after listening to this, and seeing Meigs County TN-by any chance is Meigs County in the middle of Hillbilly Heaven?? Just wondering.
Oh no! To get to Meigs County, go to the country, turn right and go 15 miles! 😁
@@MeigsCountyRR Don't forget, if you see the big oak you gone too far. See you at the shindig
I'd why he stopped but unless he has the world's worst emergency brakes those were normal breaks
what was it that popped?
Never found out. I drove up the train while it was stopped and didn't see any thing or any body.
Sounded like a burst air hose to me. Happens from time to time.
❤❤❤
Didnt hear pops in the norfolk southern train
OK. But I can hear it plainly. Thanks for watching.
Nvm I heard it
I actually heard two pops but not at the same time.
The pops you hear are the engines engaging dynamic braking. the didn't go into emergency
2:42
Great catch!
How long did it sit there?
2:42 was a pop, but a smaller one. I have no clue why it stopped. It stayed stopped about 7-10 minutes. I debated whether to stay and wait for it to start, or try to get to the front and see if anything was wrong along the way. I didn't get to the front. But that's how my luck usually goes.
@@MeigsCountyRR I'm gonna listen with earphones when I get around to it again. You're a gem. I want to visit you and eat country ham, okra and cornbread and pecan pie.
Sweet tater pie would be okay too.
Enjoy your job, sir!
@@captaintrips2980 There's plenty of that kind of food around here for sure. But the closest railroad track to my place is 20 miles. I live in the only county in TN without a RR track. That's why I ironically named the channel Meigs Co. RR.
@@MeigsCountyRR I get it now. I like soul food too, mmmm.
Sounded like slack ran in.
Hello
HI :)
Why would it be illegal to have a scanner in your vehicle in your state?
There are a lot of laws I don't understand. I suppose it keeps people from following or showing up at police things. So they just made a blanket law about scanners in cars. It doesn't matter that it's only RR frequencies.
@@MeigsCountyRR People also use scanners when they commit crimes. They can follow the police broadcasts and avoid their searches.
I'm not speaking from experience. :)
It's most likely illegal in yours too, wherever you are.
@@MeigsCountyRR what was the loud pop
@@achannelaboutplayinggamesa2025 I never found out. But as I traveled up the train headed for the locomotive, I could hear air lines hissing. Probably charging them up after one became disconnected maybe. That's only speculation.
