As a german you're sitting there scratching your head, wondering what they are fighting about....same designer, same basic layout.........rear engine, air cooled engine, rear wheels, stramelined chassis design. the beetle it wanted to beat the Porsche to prove that it had potential. It beat the Porsche but was it really worth it at the cost of its own life? R.I.P
No, the one they dropped was a stripped out shell, really banged up and crudely painted, no interior, probably no engine, can clearly see it doesn't have taillights which the running one they raced earlier did have. As a classic Beetle owner, I see nothing salvageable on it, so really no loss.
I remember when this was first aired I had it recorded and was watching it with my dad and just as the beetle was dropped it ended recording and I was so upset, but I was able to watch again from that part a day later
People, people, let's be tolerant for a second here... The people overreacting, complaining and 'unsubbing' are just perplexed and confused after seeing a standard beetle win a race for the very first time.
Guys, you know the beetle they dropped wasn't the same one that they drag raced earlier, right? In fact, the one they dropped was in complete shit condition
Brendan Sheehy The beetle is a simple motor. Easy to repair and parts are not too hard to come by. The beetle they mashed could've been made into a beautiful car again with some love... But hey, this was awesome too :D
ben sluder I'd just consider that a plus, you can either get a good engine and slap it in, refurbish an old one, or the right porsche engine, which will bolt right in, except you need to space the bootlid out a little... These beetles are great restoration pieces! Buddy of mine has one in good condition and it's fun to fill it up with friends on a road trip, everyone sits close together, no headrests in the way for conversation... just fun little cars to own!
Probably true. Doesn't really hut in my opinion though, even as a classic Beetle owner, as looking closely you can see the one dropped - which wasn't the same one as they raced against earlier - is just a stripped out shell, no interior, probably no engine, just a junk body.
obviously they used 2 different beetles as they also mention, BUT in the desert scene there are also 2 different ones attached to the heli if you look closely (missing door handles, missing taillights, different headlights, one shot driver window rolled down, one shot window rolled up again etc) OR they shot 2 different scenes and changed parts of the car (for whatever reason)
I still get sick watching this nonsense. My bug is 2000cc w single turbo and it would destroy that Porsche. And I get 28mpg highway. 10.06/134.5 in 1/4 and 6.40/107 in 1/8. I've had it to 160mph in 4th still pulling w 1000rpm to go. Scary but can't complain. lol.
SLICK WheelsGaming you can look me up on TH-cam. And I can supply all the gearing, dyno runs, drag racing slips and gear ratios along with tire sizes to prove it. And back my comment 100% . What do you have?
***** please post your claim. I'm sure a more built Porsche would give my beetle a run. But definitely not any factory setup and not for under 40k USD. It's sad my bug is faster than the fastest production Porsche. lol.
You guys are going to be really heart broken when you see even the $440,000 V10 TT Porsche Supercar is slower in the 1/4 than my homemade junkyard beetle. I'm only a couple tenths behind the Bugatti in the 1/4. Lol.
For everyone crying about the destruction of the Beetle, here's a quick fact: They made more than 21 million, including foreign manufacture. That, and parts are ridiculously easy to find. In fact, you would have a harder time trying to find a door mirror for a 2014 Ford Focus SE than you would finding the exact same part, or even an entire door, for a 1959 Volkswagen Beetle. The REAL rarity is the Volkswagen Type II Van, or, as I call it: "The Hippie Bus," which were often driven to death, and parts aren't as easy to find for it.
Take it easy. It is British who make fun of other country, their culture and their cars. On another note, they destroyed Morris Marina (British car) by dropping Piano over it and causing an uproar with Morris fans.
Well you know, destroying things of value always males me sad and angry. I also get upset when I see videos of engines being destroyed. But in this case it is something different: It is because I love old cars. I prefer them to new ones. Old cars have a face and a soul, you can recognize them just by listening to the engine sound. This is what modern cars lack.
For all those people getting upset over a beetle being destroyed, go cry over a tree, its more complicated then the beetle, and probably just as easy to find one.
The one they dropped was a stripped out shell, really banged up and crudely painted, no interior, probably no engine, can clearly see it doesn't have taillights which the running one they raced earlier did have. As a classic Beetle owner, I see nothing salvageable on it, so really no loss.
I agree, as it's a design classic that they destroyed for a cheap laugh. I think this could have been a good opportunity to do a feature on the VW scene and what you really can do to the VW Type 1. Showcase the best stuff, such as Volksrods, resto-cal and even the drag scene. Just another missed opportunity. I preferred the original format, better journalism and not a lad-mag.
I would like to see a real challenge for current porsche vs old beetle. I propose an endurance race through snow. Lots of it. There's an urban legend that seems to be synonymous with the old air-cooled punch buggy... people swear by the fact that in icy and snowy conditions, they wouldn't feel safer in any other car. I hear this frigging everywhere! I also live in Canada, so I assume that these people have most likely had some sort of experience driving bugs in chilly weather to fortify their claims. If you guys decide to take this challenge on, please drive Canada. This country has been neglected enough by your show, with all due respect.

This beetle don't have even door handles or lights, the car is just painted fresh red and it fools you to think that is a nice car. At 4:43 you can see how bad the paint job is! They just painted ower rust,
Junkjards are full of cars like that, why don't you save all of those? Atleast this car got some fame before pressing into cubilcle!
You're correct but it's the principle of the thing.
You're not blind, but you might be deaf: 2:36 "So I was shipped out to a salt flat in South Africa, where another Porsche Turbo convertible and *another* awful Beetle had been lined up."
It might be rusty and repainted but it feels so wrong to destroy a beetle
Just an fyi it is the same
Let me rewind!
Why destroy a classic car, the supply of Beatles to destroy is limited
i agree, now there's only 2 left
@@Saturn185 1*
They deserve it
All kinds of classic cars get crushed daily. They could have easily picked a rarer car. The beetle might as well be the car to drop, as they made so many in the same style, up until the mid 2000s.
the supply of EVERY CAR to destroy is limited, they won't make one just for you to destroy it
Kids in africa could eat this Beatle.
BR passa dos limites até em canal gringo !!!!
Kids in Africa could eat the Kids in Africa joke...
+DemonRo15 are you new to the internet?
They're in africa
Even better, it'll be cooked by the sun and seasoned with salt.
What? I see just two Beetles..
haha well played :)
***** Finally somebody who get's the Irony of that debate.
As a german you're sitting there scratching your head, wondering what they are fighting about....same designer, same basic layout.........rear engine, air cooled engine, rear wheels, stramelined chassis design.
(although on the Käfer that was more a side effect)
And Ferri Porsche was equally proud of both.
Because 911 was a good sports car, and Beetle was a car that every family could have.
the beetle it wanted to beat the Porsche to prove that it had potential. It beat the Porsche but was it really worth it at the cost of its own life? R.I.P
When i went to india with my family because my mother was sick,we always had an abandoned beetle somewhere near our house.
To bury her in or why?
RIP Volkswagen Beetle. :3
Why do you keep watching....just curious
We Haul I wanna see if the Volkswagen Beetle can beat the Porsche.
Not convinced yet until the final race will also be done the other way around.
Top Gear, trolling stupid car nerds since forever.
Chasden Cole You're welcome.
They just destroyed a perfectly good beetle 😲 oh such different worlds we live in
Nah, it was broken
No, the one they dropped was a stripped out shell, really banged up and crudely painted, no interior, probably no engine, can clearly see it doesn't have taillights which the running one they raced earlier did have. As a classic Beetle owner, I see nothing salvageable on it, so really no loss.
what have the producers have been smoking.
Money probably..
i think!
TopGear destroyed a old clean bug,,,I will be crossing off TopGear's channel of my video list and give them a thumbs down.
The Beetle held up to that impact better than I was expecting.
I remember when this was first aired I had it recorded and was watching it with my dad and just as the beetle was dropped it ended recording and I was so upset, but I was able to watch again from that part a day later
I’ve always wondered if the results would’ve been different on asphalt.
People, people, let's be tolerant for a second here...
The people overreacting, complaining and 'unsubbing' are just perplexed and confused after seeing a standard beetle win a race for the very first time.
3:14 well I've watched enough Mythbusters to know where this is headed.
Why did he not sit in The beetle both times
It's a good question, should've been thorough
He thought the Porsche was going to win again.
Dammit top gear, I could use the beetle!!!
Are you people on DRUGS??? That's no way to treat a Beetle! LOL!
Guys, you know the beetle they dropped wasn't the same one that they drag raced earlier, right? In fact, the one they dropped was in complete shit condition
so? your point is?
It was bound for the crusher anyways. At least it went out with a bang
Brendan Sheehy The beetle is a simple motor. Easy to repair and parts are not too hard to come by. The beetle they mashed could've been made into a beautiful car again with some love...
But hey, this was awesome too :D
DrakeKillah Dude, there were almost holes through the floor. I wouldn`t even waste my time
ben sluder I'd just consider that a plus, you can either get a good engine and slap it in, refurbish an old one, or the right porsche engine, which will bolt right in, except you need to space the bootlid out a little... These beetles are great restoration pieces! Buddy of mine has one in good condition and it's fun to fill it up with friends on a road trip, everyone sits close together, no headrests in the way for conversation... just fun little cars to own!
I bet that beetle never went that fast its entire life... still hurts tho :(
Probably true. Doesn't really hut in my opinion though, even as a classic Beetle owner, as looking closely you can see the one dropped - which wasn't the same one as they raced against earlier - is just a stripped out shell, no interior, probably no engine, just a junk body.
R.I.P BEETLE :(
brutus64 So you have owned one and can speak from experience? They are actually very good cars and durable too.
wigs1098 I have a vw 1967 and has never failed, the best cars are the vw
that's true bro
obviously they used 2 different beetles as they also mention, BUT in the desert scene there are also 2 different ones attached to the heli if you look closely (missing door handles, missing taillights, different headlights, one shot driver window rolled down, one shot window rolled up again etc) OR they shot 2 different scenes and changed parts of the car (for whatever reason)
a beetle is a monument on wheels, its a pitty...and you need to go to South Africa to trow it up????
Yesss
why didnt they drop the porsche from 30km and let that Beetle live? I mean, nobody could care less where the porsche landed.
4:04 AHHHHHAAHHAHHHHHHRRRGG!
lmao i just heard that
This is too painful, I just can't watch it 'till the end.
Scary but can't complain. lol.
UM SUUUURE IT WOULD BUD
SLICK WheelsGaming you can look me up on TH-cam. And I can supply all the gearing, dyno runs, drag racing slips and gear ratios along with tire sizes to prove it. And back my comment 100% . What do you have?
***** please post your claim. I'm sure a more built Porsche would give my beetle a run. But definitely not any factory setup and not for under 40k USD. It's sad my bug is faster than the fastest production Porsche. lol.
But the porsche can do all perfectly, but your beetle with 2.000.000 hp can´t take a corner or breaking
You guys are going to be really heart broken when you see even the $440,000 V10 TT Porsche Supercar is slower in the 1/4 than my homemade junkyard beetle. I'm only a couple tenths behind the Bugatti in the 1/4. Lol.
We all joke, but I think we all owe a big "thank you" to Adolf.
poor beetle... couldn't take something like a dacia ?
:( I'm sad for the beetle
Chasden Cole the boxer platform is the best platform out there
For everyone crying about the destruction of the Beetle, here's a quick fact: They made more than 21 million, including foreign manufacture.
Crazy how the vw bug driver survived the race! That was a far way down
All these people complaining that they destroyed a beetle. They aren't that rare, or special. They are just iconic, nothing more.
And it's that iconicness about them that makes them so special. And there arent actually that many left based on how many have gone to the scrapyard.
It makes me sad and angry to see a Beetle being destroyed. Why didn't you take a Mini instead? I won't watch Top Gear anymore.
Beetle was an original idea of Hitler. If you see James May's car of people you see why. He explained that in detail.
Is that this beetle's fault? Do I make you responsible fot the things your ancestors (I suppose you're english or american) did to the indians?
Take it easy. It is British who make fun of other country, their culture and their cars. On another note, they destroyed Morris Marina (British car) by dropping Piano over it and causing an uproar with Morris fans.
Well you know, destroying things of value always males me sad and angry. I also get upset when I see videos of engines being destroyed. But in this case it is something different: It is because I love old cars. I prefer them to new ones. Old cars have a face and a soul, you can recognize them just by listening to the engine sound. This is what modern cars lack.
+Claus Appel are you german?
An African family could have eaten that beetle!
+TMhyp3r According to what I've heard, a man once ate an entire VW Golf to impress a woman. She wasn't impressed.
Story of how my love life works xD
TMhyp3r Haha, that's quite true.
..wait, how do you know...?
TMhyp3r I'm a member of the Illuminati.
I have a beetle, this made me cry
nooooooooooooooooooooooo i love betleeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
The question is
What the hell do these "producers" use to come up with these ideas and where can i get them?
For all those people getting upset over a beetle being destroyed, go cry over a tree, its more complicated then the beetle, and probably just as easy to find one.
justforever96
10/10 would logic again
justforever96
No Beetles grow on rocks
Laurynas But how many of those 21mil are still driving around on the road, and not crushed?
Hapie Star looooool
Tremendous Thequadfeeder You can find them around every corner
The one thing Hammond failed to realize is that the Porsche doesn't look better in the end, it looks the same. Squashed Beetle = Squashed Beetle.
Rip my fallen Bug Brother...
Sacrificed for science
The one they dropped was a stripped out shell, really banged up and crudely painted, no interior, probably no engine, can clearly see it doesn't have taillights which the running one they raced earlier did have. As a classic Beetle owner, I see nothing salvageable on it, so really no loss.
Disliked because DO NOT destroy old beetles.
I hate when ppl pronounce porsche porsh, when its really pronounced porsha.
Why is everyone else in the comment section so obsessed with that old beetle that looks like it belongs in a junk yard
bc it was iconic and had sentimental value, even if it wasnt so good as an actual car
Should have dropped the Porsche.
That was sad to watch lol. Beetles are like people and its like that car was so sad lol.
No car is more human than a Volkswagen Beetle.
I preferred the original format, better journalism and not a lad-mag.
even if they where the same money i would buy the beetle.Dem curves
Meanwhile the Beetle:
“Tis but a scratch.”
How could you destroy a perfectly good Beetle?
NOOOOAAAOOHH!!!😫WHYYYYYY! Look what they did to my POOR Beetle! Somebody put it out of its misery!😢 Respect the Elder Cars man!😥
The one they dropped was a stripped out shell, really banged up and crudely painted, no interior, probably no engine, can clearly see it doesn't have taillights which the running one they raced earlier did have. As a classic Beetle owner, I see nothing salvageable on it, so really no loss.
Why do most on here think they are the same 2 beetles..they're obviously aren't, please look carefully..👀
Yeah, I think most people aren't looking closely enough. The one they dropped was a stripped out shell, really banged up and crudely painted, no interior, probably no engine, can clearly see it doesn't have taillights which the running one they raced earlier did have. As a classic Beetle owner, I see nothing salvageable on it, so really no loss.
