The Federal Government smog control laws for car manufacturers neutered them. They didn't have the technology developed yet to gain horsepower and have a cleaner runner engine. Jimmy Carter's energy policies also caused the cost of gas to good up limited the supply. The economy was suffering and there was no real market for high horsepower cars in the late 70s early 80s.. It was a weird time...great for rock n' roll, not for cars.
I'm not sure what you consider mild, but for street use it was near the most that you would want imho. I am the original owner and built (I spec'd the engine and washed all the parts, lol) the engine with a friend who works for a race shop. It has more like 600hp, it ran 11.60 @ 120.94 mph on some old drag radials with a weak 60' at around 1.90. The heads are cnc ported and flowed 347 at .600. The cam is a custom made full hydraulic roller, .593 intake, .615 exh., 252/260 duration @ .050 with 1.5 rocker. .220" intake valves and the springs were set up to handle 1.65 rockers if we wanted more lift and duration. The engine is very solid. It has a lifter bore brace, fully balanced, Scat forged rods, Ross forged pistons Pontiac nodular iron crank. Canton high cap oil pan with crank scraper, biggest Robbmc Pontiac mechanical fuel pump. Arp fasteners, etc., etc.
bcamk awesome Trans Am. by any chance do you know the wheel and tire sizes. I have a 76 TA with 17” snowflakes but am struggling to find a tire combo that doesn’t rub the fenders but also looks right. Thanks 👍
@@martinsmotorchannel I've got a 76 too with 17 inch snow flake rims, I'm as wide as you can go front and back, but they look like they will clear just barely, I can get you my tire sizes, let me know!
@@martinsmotorchannel The wheels were added after I sold it. I had the 15 x 8 ws6 snowflakes on it. I believe it had 255/60 on the front and 275/60 on the rears.
@@WisdomOverWicked777Rules It was a standard 10 bolt posi 3.73 gears, we beefed it up, but I forgot what we did to it. It had a built 200r4 trans which has a deep first gear. It launched well, but traction was an issue. I think it did the 1/8th at 7.6 sec and a little over 100mph.

My 75 bird is running Howards 414655-08 with 1.65 rockers in a 474 . Talk about beast ! 2.25 valve Alu heads … almost the same motor as yours - as for phreneticFool - he has no idea what big is. That cam is about all you can stuff into a street machine and still be able to drive it on the street. I have gone 10.97 so I think weight, traction is only thing holding you back from at least that.
pretty sure ya could. But why not just get a 78’ then? Otherwise the rear tail lights don’t match & TA enthusiast will just give you shit for being stupid. 😄
You definitely could. There's a video of a 79 TA with a 78 front clip on TH-cam somewhere (EDIT) I couldn't find the video so I'm not sure if it'd fit or not. It might actually have been a 79 with 78 taillights on it in the video. I really don't remember. I don't want to be responsible for you running out and buying a front clip that won't fit! lol

These classics deserve to run as good as they look. Detroit pussed out on the horsepower in the late 70s.

Великолепный авто и работа! Спасибо, что даёте возможность посмотреть как выглядят настоящие авто! Берт Рейнольдс навсегда в наших сердцах!
This Trans am is an absolute beauty. I like the 400 W72 but the 455SD is another beast!
Trans am is the best of all the muscle cars.Best looking ,handling and just ahs a presence about it.
Better than that LS swap crap!
Cooler yes, better not necessarily
The prettiest face of the bunch now with the heartiest of hearts
Muscle has never looked so good!!!

@@CaptainFALKEN this is 10 times better
what a beautiful trans am my dream car
Yes exactly. I love these types of cars. They are cute.
I agree. I gotta say though, I hate the low profile rims. The stock ones would look much better.

76 was the last year of the 455, probably a 400! Unless it was a transplant!
@@todd2902 yeah most likely a transplant highest 79 went on motors was a 403 Oldsmobile motor

Need to get rid of that wheel gap. Looks good though

Hi. Is it stainless exhaust that sits on it
❤❤❤
I want one 😢!
if I get a 79, could I put a 78 front bumper on it or will it not fit? I'm not really a fan of the 79 bumper😂

Hi. Is it 3 inch exhaust you have on it
Think it was 3 inch full dual and flow master 40 series mufflers, that car sold long time ago but most our cars we do that combination
Which exhaust and which pots are fitted?
It had Doug’s headers, a full 3” with X-pipe and Flowmasters on it when I sold it.
Here it is 6 years later. Is it still in such good condition?
So much Fun
How engine setup you driving with? ironhead or aluhead? Rpm performer camshaft??
It had cnc ported Edelbrock aluminum heads, roller cam. I put the specs in a comment 4 years ago.
Toutes beauté ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Love it
