One of the best songs ever written with lyrics that hold meaning for so many who gre up in the United States in the 70s

A catchy great tune. And no matter what life brings good or bad, there is always the music that will always be there to help us through.

This is a great song. I have it in my playlist in my phone. Kind of a circle of life ,or how things repeat.. When the 1st child gets all the attention when the 2nd one comes along I'm sure it does have an effect even at 2.. Different story ,but same idea with the repeating of life. if you listen to Elvis Presley "in the ghetto". I also really like the guitar break in the middle of lonely boy.

So many people miss the point of this song. It’s well known that the first 4 years of a person’s life have a profound effect on the course it takes. Children ARE selfish. For the most part, they think the universe revolves around them, especially if they’re the first born in their family. In fact, first-born girls tend to be even more jealous and can become quite violent towards their younger sibling if the age difference is within 4 years. I think it’s also worth pointing out a couple of details. Gold is Jewish and Jewish mothers do tend to dominate their children. Also, it’s likely that Gold’s family were comparatively new immigrants and that two children were all that they had. Gold is describing the profound influence his family had on his outlook and how he could see those circumstances projecting into a new generation and the cycle that forms. The song is full of pathos to those who care to listen. But some people prefer to tell people about their favourite pillow.

You should react to Building a Bridge to Your Heart, a song Andrew Gold did with his band Wax.

Who remembers how they felt when they were two ? people who do, are normally selfish. Just saying seems to be true.

I wish Andrew Gold had taken the time to craft a better story for this song. Everything about it sounds great musically, and the odd accenting on the standard 4/4 time signature really draws you in. But the premise of the lyrics is really stupid. A kid gets so bent out of shape because his parents have another child that he spends his entire childhood pissed off about it, and then takes off as soon as he hits adulthood? Who can even relate to such a thing? He could have come up with something really poignant about loneliness, instead he gave us this dumb and unbelievable story. Oh well, at least it's catchy.
