Gold wrote that this song was "sort of dedicated" to his musical partner Brock Walsh and his manager Norman Epstein. The song was later re-recorded by Cynthia Fee to serve as the theme song for the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls - XO

His mother is Marni Nixon, a wonderful famous singer who dubbed the songs for many lead actresses in musicals whose voices weren't up to par. This was a fantastic musical family.
I became an ardent fan of Andrew Gold many years before this hit song was chosen to be the theme for The Golden Girls.

This song was on Andrew's 1977 LP "What's Wrong With This Picture?", which featured his hit "Lonely Boy". This was long before the "Golden Girls" were around, but Andrew made a fortune in royalties from them.

As a huge fan of The Golden Girls since my teens, I'm in shock that I never knew this original version existed. I kind of choked up from the nostalgia hearing it, I never missed a show back then.

Per Songfacts Seven years after this song was a hit for singer/songwriter Andrew Gold, it became the theme from the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls, which ran from 1985-1992. A jingle singer named Cynthia Fee sang the TV version.
With lyrics about a friendship that endures into old age, the song is remarkably appropriate for the show:
And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear, even though it's hard to hear
I will stand real close and say,
"Thank you for being a friend"

And when we die, and float away
Into the night, the Milky Way
You'll hear me call, as we ascend
      I'll say your name
      Then once again
Thank you for being a friend

Andrew Gold did not make this for 'The Golden Girls', this song came out in 1978 and 'The Golden Girls' debuted in 1985. This song is bitter sweet for me. I had a friend who use to say that this song made her think of me, that the words in it, is how she felt about me as her friend, I had considered her as my best and only TRUE friend, then she decided being friends with me was too much work, that is thanks to my first husband, so much for that, huh? I still like this song anyway. Thanks for this video reaction!

Andrew Gold was a singer, songwriter & record producer of pop/soft rock music in the 1970s. Gold played on many records by other artists, most notably Linda Ronstadt. He had some good songs on his own such as "Lonely Boy", "Thank You for Being A Friend" (theme for "The Golden Girls"), "Never Let Her Slip Away" etc. He died in 2011 at the age of 59.

Oh my, the countless times I've watched the whole seven series of 'The Golden Girls'. At one time, years ago now, here in the UK you could only buy - and I did - the last two series for the German market with German subtitles! That opening section of the series with the music, clips, and the exterior of the house....damn, I so wanted that house! Thank you, darlings, for bringing all that back. Robert, UK.

Fun trivia: Andrew Gold is the son of actress-singer Marni Nixon. You may not recognize her name or face but Marni Nixon's singing voice you might recognize. She dubbed the singing voices for Natalie Wood's songs in 1961's "West Side Story" and for Audrey Hepburn's songs in 1964's "My Fair Lady" and for Deborah Kerr's songs in 1956's "The King and I."

This song from the 70s Golden Girls in the 80s. Andrew played in Linda Ronstadt's band for many years. Piano and Guitar. Helped arrangements some. They were good friends. Not her manager though as some have said. That was Peter Asher for most of her career.

Besides his solo material, for a short time, Andrew Gold was also a replacement member of 10cc, when their original core members Kevin Godley & Lol Creme, left the band to make their own albums and direct music videos. It was after the whole band broke up that Gold and Graham Gouldman got back together to form Wax UK, which other people have mentioned in these comments.

Hi guys, I believe if I remember right this song came first. I remember hearing it on the radio all the time and was surprised when I first watched the Golden Girls and heard it being used as the theme song. I had a sweet elderly friend that used to tell me jokingly when I was young: "Girl, I have forgotten more than you have ever known". I am starting to get to that "forgetting part". :) Sometimes I think I remember something from the past and I am so certain, and then I am proved wrong. I should probably just Google stuff more and not rely on just my memory.

The song did come first . A dark story about this song is it was used at the end of a tape recording sent by a hoaxer to police who were investigating a UK serial Killer called the Yorkshire Ripper . I am an Andrew Gold fan . He also had hits with Never Let Her Slip Away , How Can this be Love and Lonely Boy . He later collaborated with Graham Gouldman of 10CC and formed a group called Wax and their biggest hot was Building a Bridge to Your Heart .

Andrew Gold's mother was singer Marni Nixon. Marni did overdub singing for Natalie Wood in "Westside Story", Deborah Kerr in "The King and I" and Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady". She also played Sister Sophia in the 1965 movie musical "The Sound of Music ". She was the go to person when producers needed to replace the singing voices of actresses whose singing abilities were not up to par.

Produced and written by late Andrew Gold and Brock Walsh. Suggested video 📹: Lonely Boy. RIP Andrew Gold.
A number of other TV 📺 shows have popular songs. Bosom Buddies used My Life by Billy Joel. Dweebs used You May Be Right also by Billy Joel. Greatest American Hero used Believe It or Not by Joey Scarbury. Friends used I'll Be There for You by The Rembrandts, late Allee Willis, Danny Wilde, David Crane and Marta Kauffman.
RIP Allee Willis. Back in 1980, she and Bryan Adams wrote Wait and See, which appeared in his debut album. Willis was a co writer of September for Earth Wind and Fire 🔥 and wrote What Have I Done to Deserve This with The Pet Shop Boys.

As long as we're listening to "oldies", and while I'm here, I'm requesting a female vocalist I'm sure you have not yet reacted to. I was reminded today of a song I haven't heard in literally decades -- "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" by Jackie DeShannon (link below). You will love the message. It's still as relevant today as it was in 1969. This song was released in 1969, and today is Jackie's 81st Birthday! Thanks! 💙✌
