When Tony Dorsett ran that 99 yard touchdown on MNF I was wearing his replica Jersey and was jumping up and down going crazy! One of the greatest moments in Cowboys history. Nobody cares that they lost to Vikings.
The Cowboys only had 10 men on the field for that play.

My Packers in the 70's sucked so bad I got hooked on the Cowboys!! The entire 70's teams were filled with heroes pulling rabbits out of the hat in clutch situations!! Golden Richards dive in the end zone, Ed "Too Tall" Jones with a sack, Cliff Harris with an INT, Roger Staubach with 4th and goal and 4 seconds to go TD, and then TD and all his magic!! I hate the Cowboys now with Jerry Jones, the those years in the 70's were dreams come true!! Sort of Like Sugar Ray Leonard in the 80's, just when you thought there was no way in hell they could win, they pulled it out!!

Of all of the running backs I have seen Tony Dorsett was the best I have ever seen play that position.
1,007 yards rushing, in a then-14-game season his rookie year! And didn't start 'til Week 10!
+Joey COCO Dorsett was outstanding, he most dangerous back in the NFL between 1977-1981. The only RB that made me nervous as a Steelers fan during that time. Not even Campbell cause that kind of anxiety because he wasn't as much of a HR hitter as Dorsett. Tony was a threat to go all the way every time he had the ball.

+mmeatheaddd Tell that to Earl Campbell and Dorsett. Sweetness is a HOF'r but he was not the breakaway back that Dorsett was.. that's not even debatable. Walter was tough, durable, and good in every facet of football. But, a homerun hitter he was not.

i guess having a higher yards per carry then dorsett means payton sucked right?paytons longest run was a 78 yarder and he had a 90 yard td run called back in the play offs,but your right payton cant brake a long one.....

The Best! my family had season tickets at Texas Stadium from 75 to 84. Saw some of the best games ever played. The dream team of 77 and 78 was amazing to see as a little kid. Great memories!
Growing up we had a front row seat to watch some of the best running backs in the NFL. And not to take anything away from the Cambells, the Paytons, Foremans, Simpson, Sims, the Dickersons. They were all great in their own right. But the one player who exemplified excitement, speed, and smoothness, was none. other than T.D. Tony Dorsett. I wouldnt miss a Cowboys game during his career. The only player to win an NCAA Championship, and a Superbowl back to back. Elected to College Football Hall of Fame, The Pro Football Hall of Fame. What a pure joy it was to watch this man run. Everytime he touched the ball, you were disappointed if he didnt get a touchdown. He was nothing but excitement.
Pure runner with instincts you cant teach. One of the all time NFL GREATS!

If you actually watch his head you will see that about 80% of the time his head doesn't bob up and down. Very smooth. Always impressed me. I grew up watching him
I've never been a Dallas fan, but I always loved watching Dorsett run. Every time he touched the ball, you knew he could score.

5:12 at this game when I was in the 6th grade. Family were Vikings fans so we went. Guy behind me spilled his beer down my back. But I got to see Dorsett's 99 yard TD run.

I was a 14-year old avid Cowboy fan when Dallas drafted Dorsett, and I remember telling people that the Cowboys will undoubtedly be back in the Super Bowl. And I don’t care what anyone else says, Dorsett was every bit as talented as Barry Sanders, if not more.
I really loved watching Tony and thought he was the best I ever seen. But he’s not Barry Sanders.

I'm a long time Cowboys fan and I was a young kid in the 70's and tried to never miss a game of my Boyz especially when TD got there in 77.He was a treat and along with Walter Payton my favorite players.I always tell people that TD was/is greater then Emmitt although I have huge respect for little E.,Tony was faster and didn't play behind as good a lines as E.Regardless they are both Cowboys and along with Calvin Hill and Walt Garrison legendary RB's for Dallas.
as a young giant fan in the late 70s and early 80s TD was easily the best opposing runner to come to town year after year. and he made it look so effortless.
I watched an interview with Bill Parcels who said Dorsett was the hardest offensive player to scheme against saying “he was a real pain in the ass” put him above Montana Rice ect
Reggie White was the hardest to coach against in his opinion.

Anyone who thinks Tony Dorsett is overrated doesn't understand the RB position. He was one of greatest NCAA and NFL RB's of all time, only a handfull of players can make that claim. Ask Marcus Allen how great Dorsett was.

I remember my older brother always telling me about TD and Billy Sims. Billy was another Heisman Trophy winner and was on his way to becoming a HOF'er when he suffered a horrible knee injury in the middle of his prime, what a shame. The year he won the Heisman for Oklahoma In 1978, he rushed for 1,762 yards on 231 carries at an insane clip of 7.6 yards per carry and 20 TDs. He ran for over 5000 yards in only 60 NFL games at 4.5 yards a carry. But my brother always said Tony Dorsett was the most underrated RB out of the all timers who played full careers. I think Billy would have been up there as well. And yes its the same Billy Sims who owns the BBQ restaurant chain.

Billy Simms was great but his career was too short. That is why he is often forgotten and you never hear about him.

Tony dorsett ran a 9.6 i think in the 100 yrd dash on tv during the nfl super star competition. I remember watching that and yes he was my fav rb of all time!!!
And this was when players could tackle, and didnt side step or take bad angles to avoid contact.

Tom Landry hated the fact that Dorsett didn't hit the hole the way the play was designed and instead ran for daylight once he got the football.
That's why Tony wasn't the official starter until week 10.
If Dorsett had started as a rookie, who knows how many yards he could have had.
He didn't start for 10 games. Landry was old school with the 3 yards and a cloud of dust mentality.

at one time he was the only rb to rush for 1000 yds for 12 straight yrs from HS to the NFL(4 yrs HS; 4 yrs CFB & 4 yrs NFL, consecutively).
He may not be the best running back ever, but in his prime, he mag be the sweetest runner to watch. His style was so smooth to watch.
He was the sweetest running back ever. People like to say Barry Sanders but he was not as smooth and graceful. Dorsett was beautiful to watch.
And no Darrell Green did not run him down he slowed down because he thought he was about to make touchdown !!!!

As a kid I didn't like Dorsett because he was always beating my team. As I got older I realized how privileged I was to have seen him play. One of the greatest ever!

Tony Dorsett by far was the most graceful and smooth running back . I loved watching him play because you knew at any time he could break the big one .
Very graceful, but I have to go with Gale Sayers as the the most graceful. Just my opinion.
@@markv1031 Gale is a great choice too . it's really hard to say who was the most graceful because all the greats had their own smooth style. Guys like Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Barry Sanders, and Priest Holmes were the ones i loved to watch .

Funny how we were able to enjoy the careers of TD , Magic , Sugar Ray , and Reggie Jax ( not to mention countless others ) all within this same era , all winners at every level , polarizing in their perspective sports and defyers of conventionality in their greatness !! Late 70's/early 80's were a great time to be a Dallas fan.
I wasn't a Dallas Cowboys fan. But the main reason why enjoyed watching them on TV was to simply watch #33 if he would break one for a big run. It was beautiful watching TD burn defenses when he was feeling it. Tom Landry was a great coach, but he greatly limited TDs running production to no more than up to the 20 times a game according to sports critics. My most favorite running backs in no order - Tony Dorsett, Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton, John Riggins & Emmit Smith. I struggle with finding great RBs today. Adrian Peterson is a great running back too.

I’ve seen Emmitt and Zeke...both are superb. Zeke has a good chance of joining Emmitt in the HOF. While all three have different styles, Tony was better!!

Dorsett was awesome and had it all. Joe Gibbs gave him the highest compliments, because that was his competitor. Hit him, hit him, hit him, and then 'boom'!....he's gone. The only disappoint of his career, to me was in the Superbowl against the Steelers. He had the Steelers 'number', with his speed and cutting ability, and he was slicing up the Steelers. For some reason Landry went away from him. If they had kept handing the ball to Dorsett that game (78' Superbowl), Dorsett would have been the MVP and the Cowboys would have won a tough fought victory, but sort of 'cruised' behind Dorsett's running. I was actually rooting for the Steelers that game, but Dorsett was in a zone, and they should have kept giving him the ball. Would have changed history as the Cowboys would have won 3 superbowls during that era, and Dorsett would have been remembered as a Superbowl MVP. One of those 'should have been's.."
Well said and I completely agree with you!! Tom Landry was an outstanding coach but wasn't flexible and I believe it cost probably 2 Super Bowls. The second one vs. the Steelers was definitely one of them. They had no answers against Dorsett (especially in the 1st half). Dorsett could have run all day and still running in that Super Bowl. I am a Giants fan, but Dallas should have won that game and Landry is to blame

Wow. I am luck to have seen Tony Dorsett on TV when I was a boy and Emmitt Smith as a 30 year old. The best Cowboy running backs way ahead of everyone else.
I always found Tony Dorsett's healthy ego to be more endearing than annoying. I actually like players that revel in their "God given gifts". Nothing wrong with the Bary Sanders approach, but I personally like to see people feel good about themselves and their abilities. Nothing wrong with having high self esteem. I love hearing him talk about himself and his abilities, I feel good along with him.
It aint bragging if you can back it up. Ive never like the 'boys but Dorsett is one of my all-time favorites. The guy was just such a pleasure to watch run, block , catch and throw.

One of the more underrated backs although he did play with a talented legion of greats. That said, Dallas never had a running game anyway near great before he arrived in 1977. He showed up and a new dominant dimension became the pillar of the Cowboys offense.

Tony Dorsett? Underrated? ONLY by people who aren't old enough to have seen him play...and these days, anyone who played before 1990 is "underrated" to let ya'll tell it. Trust me, to those of us who were AROUND at the time, there was NOTHING underrated about him...especially to us REDSKINS fans. Dorsett played when RB talent across the league was probably the best its ever been (late 70s - mid 80s): Payton, Ottis Anderson, WIlliam Andrews, Marcus Allen, Riggins, Campbell, George Rogers, Joe Delaney, Joe Cribbs, CHuck Muncie, Wilbert Montgomery, Billy Simms, Eric Dickerson, Mike Pruitt, etc. And with all those names, Dorsett was still recognized as being one of the elite 2 or 3 RBs in the league for a good chunk of that time.

I saw his entire pro career as it happened. Today, he is underrated. THere are backs who are as good as him - like Marshall Faulk, LT, Curtis Martin, Emmitt Smith - who get far more recognition than he does now. He was feared like only a few back in his day - Walter Payton and Earl Campbell were probably the only 2 that were as much a threat in the minds of defenses in those days

Dorsett embarassed the Cardinals when he started right and then spinned over his right shoulder to go left and scored a TD. He was and still is and will always be my favorite RB of all time..This dude made me run like him as a kid playing football because his style was unmatched and his vision, speed, quickness, & acceleration is beyond reproach...He was simply "NASTY!!"

I'm from Dallas, but moved to Thousand Oaks in 1970. As a small child, I went to several Cowboy's games when they played in the Cotton Bowl in the early 1960s. Dallas had their summer camps at California Lutheran College in TO. I remember following a preseason work out, Lee Roy Jordan struck up a conversation with my Dad, and we all ended up going to the McDonald's down the street from Cal Lu for dinner. He was a real nice guy, very down to Earth. Tony Dorsett was a once in a generation athlete. His exceleration through the hole was something else. He played the game in a higher gear than almost anyone else.
Met him briefly at Restoration Hardware just north of the Galleria. Very warm and gracious in a venue where defensiveness or irritation wouldn't have been shocking, but he was awesome. Will always be a favorite memory for me.

What a legend! My football idol growing up in the 70’s and 80’s!
A highly underrated running back and think he won a Super Bowl as a rookie in 1977. He is very explosive on his feet but he does have the ability to cut sideways and accelerate quickly as he sees the hole. An agile athlete with exceptional vision and elusivity which makes him crafty. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and is dangerous on open space. No one realizes how good Tony Dorsett really is even though he is undersized but strong and shifty in breaking tackles and displaying speed.
Emit Smith couldn't carry Dorsett's jock strap!!, that's right I said it!!!
WRONG!!! I watched them both. I was born in Dallas. They were both AWESOME!!! Emmitt was clearly better. Dorsett couldn't take the pounding Emmitt did. Dorsett was clearly faster but Emmitt was THE WORKHORSE!! Emmitt came to a far worse team as well. Dorsett came to a team that had already been to Super Bowls. When we lived in Dallas we ran into him at a store. He was my favorite player at the time. He is underrated for sure. Emmitt is still THE MAN. Dallas has an embarrassment of riches at the position though. These STUPID top ten lists they do on NFL record put his 99 yard run AT NUMBER TEN!!! What a bunch of morons. The Cowboys hate is strong on NFL network they can't give the Cowboys ANY CREDIT!!! That Dorsett run is still NUMBER ONE AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!! You can't beat it period. He did it with ten men on the field broke tackles and stiff armed the last guy.

In the words of Ice Cube "You got damn right ! My friend grew up with his son Anthony Dorsett in Atlanta Ga. Tony Dorsett when he wasn't in Dallas TX he was in Atlanta GA till his son moved away in the early 80s. Small world !
