  • Review of Sailor Seiboku fountain pen ink using a Pilot Penmanship EF nib.
    Curse me! I know, it should be "you're"!
    Used pen flush for cleaning, but was not as difficult to clean as the R&K SketchINKs.

    I got a bottle of this thinking it was souboku, and after the initial shock of it being way lighter than I had anticipated, I really love it! It stays in my pilot Capless with a fine steel nib. The perfect utility pen/ink combo for me. I will probably change it up with Kiwa Guro at some point, but for now it's Sei Boku.

    Seiboku has very nice shading on either EF or Fine Sailor 21K nib...Jentle Souten is closely comparable to Seiboku too.

    I took a package of cartridges with this ink. To be honest, I didn't like them in Japanese pens EF/F - they go with difficulty, the lubrication is not very good.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've never tried with the cartridges, but with a new bottle of Souboku, the first fill was pale and poorly lubricated, so I shook it up for the second fill, and it was perfect - darker and well-lubricated. Given the similarity, I'd guess Seiboku may be the same. Perhaps if the cartridges sit on a shelf for a long time, they also need to be shaken? Or maybe the cartridge formula is different - no idea. Thanks for the feedback, though - every bit helps.

    • @genaishivatov1737
      @genaishivatov1737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I now have two new Sailor pens and one cartridge left, I'll try to follow your advice.
      Often there are bad ink in cartridges, but among the japanese I have not yet come across such (the black Pilot is one of my favorites). And more - I advise you to try black Schneider cartridges, but only black ink! The ink from the upper Sailor lines is very good for lubrication - I had Shigure and Doyou. But all the ink in this parameter surpassed Noodlers BsB by a large margin - the nib flies with them unrealistically! (however, the ink behaves quite aggressively in a pen and fade very quickly in sunlight, although it is waterproof).

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@genaishivatov1737 I'll see if anyone here sells Schneider ink cartridges - I've never seen them, but I never use black ink, so I may not have noticed. If I can find them and they're inexpensive, I'll add them to my list of inks to get. :) BSB is on my list of inks to get, just for reviewing.

    • @Flarionice
      @Flarionice 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EFNIR That's been my one reason to hold back. I use pigmented inks for calligraphy, but dip pens aren't quite the same as fountain pens. I should probably add a pen to the birthday list special for it haha

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Flarionice Ha! Yes, add a pen! :D Probably not a demonstrator pen. I'm not convinced Seiboku stains, but it definitely *appears* to stain (e.g. I have a CON-50 converter that appears to be stained, but I could remove the color from those parts which are smooth and where a Q-Tip will reach - thus, the plastic isn't discolored so much as coated, so to speak). Anywho, there's a fellow on FPN who has been using Seiboku in the same pen for years with no trouble at all, so I think the worry is overkill (unless you're the sort of person who leaves pens to dry out, in which case, pigmented might not be the best idea).

    Fräulein McGuire,
    Please excuse my short sabbatical. Absence does make the Heart grow fonder. I missed You and our brief chats.
    Seiboku has been in a Sailor Shikiori fountain pen (Blue; Medium-Fine Nib) for 5 years, usually living in my pocket or small men’s purse. Once I grade something with Seiboku, it remains graded! As You observed and demonstrated so well, Seiboku shades beautifully, and brings to mind the profound yet subtly-changing deep Blue/Blue-Green of an Ocean, whether a real Ocean or an Ocean of our Thoughts and Feelings. The Chromatography is pure Japanese Genius!
    On a separate stream of thought…
    On a recent trip to Miami, Florida (I chaperoned 4 Nieces!!!), I saw a few men with handsome bags for their pens, wallets, and “stuff”, and behaving like Gentlemen to their Girlfriends (their Lady Friends seemed happy). American Men call them “Go-Bags”, and it was wonderful to see.
    Thought for Today: To Always change in a subtle yet Always Truthful and Positive-Balanced Way, remaining Profound, Unique within our Self, yet Salubrious and Helpful to ALL LIFE.
    Salomè (Live well and in Peace Ms. McGuire!)
    Mögest Du in das Licht, der Wahrheit, und dem SEIN der Schöpfung leben.

      :) You're most kind, as always. Thank you! I hope your sabbatical was enjoyable. I love the idea of Seiboku for grading papers - it's a lovely ink. Thank you for the story from your trip to Florida - so nice to know there are still folks behaving civilized. :D It's as if the media want us to believe that never happens. And thank you for the "always change..." thought - life is changing. May we all travel in the direction you so beautifully describe! Stay unique, my friend! :)

      I return Your own Kindness back to You.
      The Very Best Teacher I ever had (who has also been and remains a “Father-Friend” to me) relates that Kindness is an integral facet of Universal Love. I am unable to accurately translate the concept of this highest form of Love into English, so I will simply write it out for You and Your readers:
      Empfindungsmässige Liebe (and Yes! It is a “mouth-full” in German!).
      Best is to describe this Universal Love, which was beautifully described by the Prophet Henoch (in English it’s “Enoch”) and later on by Socrates, Aristotle, and Galileo:
      They described it as a “Spiritual Fine-Sensitive Feeling” that is completely different from Emotional Love in that Empfindungsmässige Liebe is a PERMANENT, INDESTRUCTIBLE LOVE that a person chooses to develop - also described as a “Seventh Sense.
      While I am not a religious person, and always respect every Human Being’s Right and Freedom to have a belief and faith in a religion, I must emphasise that Empfindungsmässige Liebe TRANSCENDS a faith that someone may have because it applies to an Energy and Power capable of uniting a Human Being to ALL that EXISTS in an INDESTRUCTIBLE CONSTANCY. Like Listening, Feeling, Observations, usw, usf..., we all must learn it and apply it. But once it comes into existence it exists for all time.
      As a Scientist and Physician, I am still taking Baby Steps in my journeys / travels on the road of Loving Everything and Everyone. We all fall, learn, and get back up.
      I bid You a Good Evening and, ALWAYS, may Peace be with You.
      Auf Wiedersehen, geliebte Fräulein.

      @@barmherzigsein3259 ❤ Enoch is an excellent example of what you describe - he and the people of his city were so united with such love that they could not remain on earth but were taken up into heaven. I too am taking baby steps on that path - to recognize the best in every living person and creature - to see in them such potential that one cannot help but love them for what they could be, and therefore strive to help them be their best self. Thank you for your inspiring words - my extended family are struggling right now (one of our members suffering serious health problems) and your words bring peace and hope to my heart. Thank you!

    HAVE U TRIED NOODLER'S BALTIMORE CANYON BLUE? WHICH ONE SHEENS THE MOST? BECAUSE BOTH ARE PERMANENT WELL BEHAVED SHEENERS.
    OR DOES SAILOR SEIBOKU SHEEN WHILE WRITING? BECAUSE I DIDN'T SEE ANY... AND I LOVE SHEEN !

    • @EFNIR

      I have not tried Noodler's Baltimore Canyon Blue, nor do I have a sample at the moment, but I added it to my list (it will be at least a year before I buy more samples). Sailor Seiboku does sheen from a wet enough nib and on the right paper. You won't see it in my review simply because of the lighting angles and the EF nib wasn't wet enough.

    Wonderful and informational -- thank you! Do you find it to be difficult to clean? I started my fountain pen journey many moons ago with De Atramentis Document Fog Grey + Document Blue in a bunch of pens and did not quite keep up with them and now they're all gross. Dipping my foot into the permanents again.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Judy! Like all permanent inks, this one will do best in a pen that seals well so you don't have to worry about evaporation. I've found that Sailor Seiboku and Souboku are among the easiest of permanent inks to clean, but they still take extra work compared to non-permanent inks. But as long as they don't dry in the pen, it's not bad. The converter I use for Seiboku is stained inside, but not the pen, FWIW.

      Thank you, Andrew. Newer videos might be better, not sure. Unfortunately, all I have to record with is a smart phone (Android) and even when I set it to over-expose, it doesn't seem to come out any better. If I try to lock exposure on a grey card, the page then comes out so over-exposed you can't even see the text... I think it's because of how close I have to be to the page to have it take up the full screen - I can't position the lights farther away and diffuse them more... That's partly why I include the still images linked in the video description - at some point I learned how to use GIMP and that often improves the quality... I can't really afford to buy a better camera, so I'm afraid we're stuck we the limits on my phone.
