CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Sofia (Oprah Winfrey) is slapped by Mayor (Phillip Strong) on the street, she fights back and is accosted by other white townspeople.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple spans the years 1909 to 1949, relating the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a Southern black woman virtually sold into a life of servitude to her brutal husband, sharecropper Albert (Danny Glover). Celie pours out her innermost thoughts in letter form to her sister Nettie (Akousa Busia), but Albert has been hiding the letters Nettie writes back, allowing Celie to assume that Nettie is dead. Finally, Celie finds a champion in the don't-take-no-guff Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), the wife of Glover's son from a previous marriage. Alas, Sofia is "humbled" when she is beaten into submission by angry whites. Later, Celie is able to forge a strong friendship with Albert's mistress Shug (Margaret Avery). Emboldened by this, Celie begins rifling through her husband's belongings and finds Nettie's letters. Able at last to stand up to her husband, Celie leaves him to search for a new life on her own. A major box-office hit, The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Oscars. The film was co-produced by Quincy Jones, who also wrote the score.

One of the reasons why I really liked Sophia was because of how she was completely unafraid to protect her pride, no matter if it meant physically or verbally expressing herself.
I wish i was strong like her because i want to stand up to my bullies that i couldn't do
not only did she protect her pride she protected her children's as well! Got too have respect for anyone who does that
@@TheCreativeAutistic37 that wasn't protection. Punching a white mayor in a crowded market in 1922 is pure stupidity.
@@aaronbrutus2654 Um, he slapped her, she was angry and pissed off. Remember this lady went through abuse and other things when she was younger and another man punching her is not on her agenda.
Sad how her spirit seemed broken when she worked for the white lady, she was a totally different person
This scene ticked me off, and she had a nerve to say "They are so clean" like she expected them to be dirty smh
+J hilly Having love for black ppl/culture, is not the same thing as understanding black ppl/culture, just an fyi. I know there's good white ppl out in the world, i don't think it's rare at all. I think many white ppl, and ppl of other races (including black) need to relearn what society (and white supremacy) has taught them about black, and microaggressions need to be discussed and done away with. My mom also told me that growing up in the 60s white ppl would do this exact thing when approaching black families, even when we were kids in the 90s/00s my mom said she didn't know how to feel when white ppl would approach us and talk about how cute/nice we looked, even though i'm sure some of their intentions weren't bad.
but people would still say kids look cute if they are other races
+LaToya Sykes
um no not all whites have neanderthal dna, some do but less than 1%
They are always so oblivious to everything relating to their own history lmfao. We know more about their past than they do, watch him still not understand.
"Whites built some of the best societies in the world" LMFAO
byoung4eva1
Can you please stop? Movies about how white people used to be racist is not an excuse for you to be racist towards white people.
You're not "avenging" anything here
Terrible acting from the man in the blue jacket at 1:43.
Lol. Funny how you notice
Now he's the only thing i notice when I watch this scene hahaha
Lmao Aw come on. Leave Lawrence Fishburne alone. He tried his best.
Loooooooool never noticed this.
bluedasher74 probably Spielberg's nephew....
When she screamed "Get my children out of here!" The power in her voice and words....
@Fluffy Panda the race of the director was irrelevant to my comment. And of course it's considered acting because it's a movie. Just don't forget, although this may be a maybe, the issue were previously real yesterday, today, and will be real as well as an issue tomorrow.
Lastly, protecting their children, whom, or what they love, black woman will place energy behind the force/power of words
That was a mothers love because she knew what was coming
Exactly
That came straight from her heart body and soul ❤❤❤
Chills .
The wind blowing Sofia's dress up seems to symbolize the remainder of her dignity being stripped away from her.
It's not that deep bro
Yes, it is!!
@@chingmeabrahamkeishing859
It kinda is since they tortured her
I swear no one today can spell nuance
@@chingmeabrahamkeishing859It is that deep “bro”, go do your homework.
Man I just can't believe what our ancestors had to go through. Just....wow.
+TyTy B. Not only our ancestors, our grandparents, and even some of our parents! Heck we still going through it, problem is there's a lot of naive black ppl who think it's good these days, and give white "friends" permission to appropriate our culture, say the "n" word, etc And once they get that toke black friend to say "It's ok, it doesn't offend me", then they fill the need to think every other black person should feel that way and if we don't we are keeping racism alive
+Rachet87 Don't come up here with that bs excuse. Every race was slaves at one point in history, the difference is white ppl made black ppl forget their history, culture, and/or how to take care of things like their hair (it wasn't until 2008 that many black women started taking care of their hair, some who haven't seen their natural hair texture since they were kids, because we are taught to straighten our hair), and white ppl made anti blackness GLOBAL. And when black ppl joke on white ppl, they are just that: JOKES. And if the joke has some truth to it, it comes from generations of experience, whereas most "jokes" white ppl make about black ppl stem from racism, misunderstanding, stereotypes, etc.
+Rachet87 Oh please, were did i insult you personally? "Victimize" is such a white word i swear. That's the problem with you. Talking about what black ppl have faced, and continue to face, is not "victimizing" anything. And white ppl as a whole, aren't affected by "white slavery" nor do you suffer from it, especially mentally, like black ppl. You didn't come up here to educate ppl on white slavery, you came up here to victimize yourself, and complain, though it's what ppl like you accuse black ppl of doing. Black ppl ask for empathy and respect, and ppl like you hear "sympathy and disrespect". I swear white ppl want to get even when they are already ahead.
Everyone's ancestors had to go through shit, life wasn't exactly nice hundreds of years ago, for ANYONE. Blacks aren't the only ones who suffered. Maybe you'd know that if you'd get your head out of your ass.
It's FICTION
Why did 40 white men have to run up on her like that lol.
dead lmao
Run up on her lol that killed me
black men are scared shitless of Black women too. I wish black men would stand up for black women like white me do for white women. 💯
+Jasmine Wall they are cowards that why. They are scared of white men too. Tell them you about to call the cops and see how fast they are gone lol

captaineaux so true 😂
Oprah got robbed from that oscar for this performance. I'm glad she got the lifetime achievement though.
+Alex Mac her whole life is the reward lol, she could wake up and buy a jet if she got board.
Oprah worth $2 billion dollars pretty much self made. There is nothing that anyone can give her that could mean more than what she has done for herself.
Well I'm glad She lost that Oscar, I'm glad her shows has being cancelled, and I hope not to se her in T.V. again, Ofra betray Michael Jackson with that documental Leaving Neverland believing those liars.
@@iamnormal8648 indeed
@Luke Yacono it was a really good performance - that's why she deserves the reward.
In the book, Sofia beat all these people up. Wish they'd added that. Would've made the scene so much better more satisfying to watch.
But less realistic. Back then you could get killed for less than that. In the 70s black boys would get beat up or killed for flirting with a white woman.
They also tortured her in jail. And Celie heard about it and tried to go visit her but by that point she was comatose.
Wow I need to read the book
Rob Ramirez no wonder she was different after returning from prison!
I wish they has added it too.
"Your children are so clean." Did she really say that!? She was doing okay until she made that comment along with the, "You wanna be my maid?" Just because I'm black doesn't mean I wanna clean your damn house. I'm so glad I didn't live in those times. I would have been killed. I refuse to be treated like that by anyone.
Dam right!!! Those people were so dam RASISIT in those times! He slaps a black woman in the face no one gives a shit! Then she gets him back and everyone gives a fuck!
alexhere I never understood the motivation or the logic behind such hate.
***** I find myself thinking the same thing. There's no way I would have lived very long...
+FreedomWriter3 Yeah that's true. My mom was born in the 60s and she said many white ppl were like that, calling black children "clean, and pretty" as if they didn't expect them to be. So, even to this day, my mom says she doesn't know how to feel when white ppl complimented us when we were kids, and even now. And it's funny because i had a conversation with a white person who said they complimented a black family's baby they were pushing in a stroller, and the black family stared at him "hatefully", and he said they must be racist, not understanding that his comment was what unsettled them. It seems many white ppl of today, don't know about these things, yet think black ppl "complain" and are "victims" when they are just uneducated and naive about the effects of what their ancestors, grandparents, and even parents did to black culture.
***** systemic racism white supremacy and individual racism white supremacy are 2 different things
always hated this scene... a strong woman stands up for herself and gets disabled for life for it... in front of her kids. I think it even sadder that so much damage has been done that the mistrust has only deepened. i am real with everyone i meet, and i extend the same level of trust to all. but i understand that despite growing up poor, staying within the cycle of poverty, that is still a privilege i have; to trust all the same. i hope for a time when the divisions close.
+Darkman flEx (Prince) have you seen the movie? Maybe not the technical disabled but definitely disfigured for the rest of her life. The gun messed her eye up!
+C C.B yeah... thought that was obvious
+DaemonWulf7 It was but damn that man with the pistol clocking Oprah's character was upsetting to watch. Had I been alive back in those days Id have been locked up for standing with/up for our sisters/brothers of color. Poor (penniless) whites often are treated with the same smarmy, indignant disregard/abuse from the 'well- heeled' whites as people of color.
+Michelle B There are many days when I wish I had a time machine and an AK 47 with a full magazine.
Also the at that it silenced her for the rest of her life
Who cares I was glad she punch him to the ground LMAOOOOO!

I know how you feel.
Yeah she did but she was beaten and bruised and forced to be his wife’s maid later... the punishment was terrible for her!
She went through too much. It wasn't worth it.
The fact that she had to work for the person who contributed to her being thrown in jail makes me so sad and angry 💔 :'(
It´s an evil way of breaking someone's spirit.
I would've pissed in her food lol
Yes, but later she went back to her ex husband and worked with him.
And for free. Before that, she was going to get paid for the job.
And then the lady she worked for was such a disaster that she ruined Sophia's reunion with her family.

Oh, don't insult the name Karen! 😕 That's a pretty name!

That was the whole point of the two words.
Hell “nah” you mean lol
Yes, she worked as her maid for nothing. Not to mention losing time with her family...and all kind of abuse.
Being black in the south during the 1930s....you knew your place. Unfortunately. But Sophia made a decision.
She went to jail for 8 years for hitting someone who hit her first. Disgusting
I never realized how attractive Lawrence Fishburne was when he was younger. Anyone with me on this? Lol
Girl he still look good to me. This was 1985 I think.
Alexandra Golightly lol
You should see him in Boys in the hood he is even more attractive.
I liked him in Contagion, which was more recent
Yessssss. He was so damn fine.
When they say "I want my country back!" This is exactly what they are talking about.
They sure they want that? They do know we're armed now, right?
That's Hillary kissing the children of the black voters..."your children are so clean..would you like to vote for me? be my maid?" But loyal dupes don't respond with "hell no"...they respond with "Hillary been mighty good to us".
Danny Gherzgiher Go back to looking at internet porn Hero!
Exactly.
THOMAS SODOMIZER THANK YOU! THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE FUCKING SO NOSTALGIC AND PINING OVER.
The "Get my children out of here" was breaking my heart. She didn't want them to see what was about to happen to her especially when the people started to crowd around her. I looked at one of the babies' faces and he was about to cry which broke my heart.
Edit: me and my friend went to see this movie together last month(the 2023 musical)
And they were like waving goodbye to her 😢

Still wondering what she saw in Harpo.
So Christ like (not)... Smashing the face of a dissenter. Actually both of these characters are Satanic.

Tough people always getting beat down
Oprah always gives me chills during this, one of the best acting scenes I've ever seen. Her screaming at the men is just horrifying that we lived in such a world, and that racism still persists.

Kimberly Jakab that part makes me feel so bad 😩
Kimberly Jakab and to the “Chief “ who is sworn to protect! Just like today white people use the police to kill.
So she went to prison for 8 years for hitting someone that hit her first...despicable.
The worst part is the very detail at the very end; you can see her underwear as she's lying on the ground. The sexual abuse of black women was a big theme in both the book and the movie, and that bit references the lack of dignity they were forced to suffer through.
I was mesmerized by her stunning beauty. Eric Holder is one lucky man bahahahahahahahaahahahaa
The most unprotected person in America

That's why God created Buddha and other knowledgeable intelligent human beings
It's a freaking movie, not a historical document.
@scottbain1383 You do realise things like this and even worse happened all the time in the USA. Never researched on American history 😢😵💫???
@@limitlesscity9740 all the time... I doubt it. Hate doesn't run that deep, even in the south. We're talking exceptionalism. Mostly people went to jail for breaking the law.
It's ALWAYS easy for somebody in my generation (I'm 40, born 1977), or those younger than I am, to say what they would have done if they had lived back during those times. But, the fact is WE DIDN'T!! We can make all these grand declarations about how we would done this or said that.. But THE REALITY IS it's easy to say that from our CURRENT POSITION of freedom and social justice. We're looking at the situation through OUR eyes and OUR personal experiences in TODAY'S world. Had we actually been born and raised DURING those times, our mentality MIGHT not be the same. People make decisions based on what they know. And if all you ever knew was that culture, then THAT CULTURE is what you would operate on. It takes EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE to break the mold and go against longstanding traditions and culture. WHICH makes what those COURAGEOUS MEN AND WOMEN who fought for freedom and civil rights so special AND DESERVING of everyone's respect! It ain't as easy as it sounds..
Mississippi Dude preach! You are so correct about that I was born in 1971 so yes I do understand exactly where you coming from
THIS IS SO WELL PUT!!! I AGREED 100%!
Well if you know who you are and are honest about who you are then you can say what you'd do.
If you step and fetch today in your present life . . .
If you never challenge authority . . .
If you are a follower and not a leader then . . .
Yeah. I agree. So many people say would they would have done, but they really do not know.
You are so right because we’re putting up with a lot of foolish, unjust treatment now. I pray that 50 yrs from now black kids are saying they don’t know how we endured the early 2000’s. I truly pray for that.
Oprah is a phenomenal actress. You forget it's her and simply see the character.
Especially since it was her first film role and she had no connections in showbiz
Sometimes I wonder what she could have done if she continued with acting. She probably wouldn't be a billionaire today, but might have made some powerful films.
SHE SAID " HELL NO" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The saddest part of the movie because Sofia was spunky, strong willed, and assertive....She refused to be treated as an inferior to anyone, and it seems they just took her spirit away from her..
This is a very sad scene :(
Indeed.
Yes :)
There are some out there who see it as Oprah getting "justice" for "what she is" or whatever, but they have to see past her and realize it's her characters' own struggles! If they do, they will see Sophia's arc through the story is the most tragic, and the most uplifting (next to Celie's).
Yeah i agree
Sad but totally awesome too. If only it were really Ocra getting tuned up lol

The saddest part of this scene is that i think even if ms Sophia said no politely, she was still gonna get in trouble like this.
I'm white, but I have a lot of friends and family who are black. And I don't care if I would get beaten, if I was in that area, I would've charged up to those people and I would shouted at the top of my lungs "Leave this poor innocent woman alone! I loved this movie. I got soooo pissed at the part where Miss Millie took Sofia home to her family, just to take her away because she couldn’t drive herself home. Mrs Millie is what some modern day liberals are. She thinks she’s helping Sofia but in reality she’s just adding on to the plight of black people
Everytime I see this scene, it stirs my soul!!
I saw it in the theater at 16. I bawled my eyes out! I left wanting to know more. I listened to recordings of slaves telling their truths. I read books and poetry that helped me understand. It was an eye-opening moment in my life. I am afraid for the black community. The racial bias that still exists. I have biracial grandchildren that today I’m scared for. That’s a sad thing 150+ years after slavery ended.
Power to your little grand babies! WHOOO TAOS!
This film was probably the 1st time I became aware of such racial hatred and cruelty.I felt ashamed of my race,Oprah playing an excellent part brought this fim to a much wider audience in my opinion.I think she made so many white people realise just how IGNORANT we have been to the everyday struggle ethnic minorities have to endure.THIS IS AN AMAZING STORY .god bless those who have encountered such immoral and abusive behaviour.EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO STOP RACISM.

I havent seen this movie in years! This scene was so bittersweet, it brought so much satisfaction to know she hit him back but that was quickly ripped away when the mob came out 😭😭😭
She was right to tell him to get her children out of there. Imagine of they stayed.
poor Sophia, she was so defenseless
They treated black people no better than they treat animals. You can abuse an animal until it has to defend itself then it gets put down because it did. This hypocracy is absurd even for animals.
This is the stuff we talk about when we say racism is still rampant, just on the dl nowadays. You came to this clip and the only thing you can think about is animals? That is a conversation that has no place when discussing what our grandparents went through. Cattle are NOT on the same level as us. Yall will empathize with some dogs and pigs before you can empathize with the black HUMAN experience.
Keke Lauren Don't think you got her point. She said they treated blacks people like animals, even though they, you know, are not animals by humans
This scene always makes me 😭 "get my children out of here!" Gets me every time.

same!! I loved this part and her character
And attitude that gets you nothing...
alejandromolinac So what should she have done? Kissed Miss Millie's ass? In case you're too dumb to realize this, black people have been too nice, too forgiving, and too humble for too long and it has gotten us nowhere. Sofia realized this and refused to suck up to white people.
Bloombaby99
Make the scene close to the book.... That way she doesn't look too petty... and you forget she ended up in jail, crippled a stranger to her child... Guess you never made a sacrifice for a child? But i am too dumb to see that....
Ahhhh they all too common calling people dumb...
What black people had to go through in this country is just insane
him hitting her in the eye with the gun was so lame and unnecessary 😒
When I watched this when I was young I didn't understand why she was shouting "Get my children out of here!" As I didn't understand and I thought she was over reacting however being grown up and watching this scene and knowing the racial dynamics of that time she knew straight away she is likely to be killed in a lynching and she didn't want her children to see it all which could have been completely possible at that time. So nauseating to think this is what black people had to and sometimes still have to go through.
The look after she lays the white man out says it all she knew what was about to go down and all could she think about was her babies she didn’t want them to see what those bastards were gonna do to her. This scene always makes me tear up the rage she must’ve felt when she got punched just for protecting her babies and the fear she must’ve had when all those white people surrounded her. I also understand why the she didn’t want the others to intervene because she knew it would’ve gotten worse.
She should have thought about those babies before she said; hell no. She knew what kind of world she was living in, but pride got the better of her
@@sjvader2003not you siding with the white men
@@kiwihyunz7452 what?
@@kiwihyunz7452 There were white women too, maybe just two but still.
My heart is broken because this stuff still happens in 2020. It’s certainly evolved but it’s still here
“Get my children outta here, take ‘em home!” I felt that! She meant it….
0:18 me and that lady would have thrown hands
Fr we gotta fight
And people have the audacity to question why black Americans would still be angry in 2020
I agree totally
Never understood why they wouldn’t show her knocking the Mayor out but we saw her get hit twice.
I love when she punches that man!😄
We are not far from this today. It makes me less upset that we are extinct soon.
God promise our race will never die
hell I'm white and they would have too kill me
i cant stand racist people today
so if i lived back then oh no i would be dead
cause i hate those types of people
judging someone by what color they are is messed up
you cant help being born a certain race
this is one of the saddest books ive read
and its even harder for me too watch the movie
but i love it regardless
GOD thank you for making "some" people come too their senses
every brother an sister deserves respect
though I'm sorry too say i don't think hateful people deserve respect
AMEN
This scene really got to me as a kid. I understood the violence and suffering Black Americans were/are subjected to but the way humiliation is portrayed here was a horrible revelation.
Crazy how it’s still like this today. He hit her and no one flinched, second she defended herself its a mob.
I mean, there is a difference, if this happens today, if a black woman gets slapped, and she fights back, and a crowd of white folks begin harassing her, another crowd of black AND white people would come out to defend her. And that crowd would be bigger and growing, while the other would stay small.
I mean yes, you (americans) have not overcome racism yet, but you're halfway there. Keep it!
@@remiremsar5946You think only Americans haven't overcome racism?
I can imagine there were a lot of brave mothers like this during a time of inequality. There’s probably many untold stories of untold heroines
Bro white actors have too much freedom with the hard r bruh they use it so much you can’t tell if they’re acting or just saying it
I remember watching this as a kid and I couldn't understand why they treated her that way. That's when my mom had to explain our history to me. I miss the moments before this scene when I didn't know how evil the world really was
What history?

It’s a movie. It never actually happened. Sophia didn’t exist.
The way the little boy backed away when the mayor approached Sophia. So disturbing how we treated blacks, and I agree racism still occurs to this day.
And they wonder why even today we are still pissed off. This scene isnt just from the 1920's its right now.
You mess with a black mother, expect there to be consequences.
it feels so 2021.
This still hurts, especially now. I have tears in my eyes.
People miss the point of the scene. It is not just about racism. It is about how Sophie temper was out of even her control, and it took her losing everything to see that. Sophie's temper got her put in jail and her kids taken from her. All she had to say was No thank you Ma'ma, that's all. That is just the way it was back then for blacks. Yes it was a horrible time , but that was the reality. She is black and a woman, and that is the Mayors wife, and then she hit the Major(yes I know he hit her first) and she says HELL NO. three times...umm I am shocked that she was not beat and hanged for that to be honest . Sophie was use to always fighting(everyone) to survive, and she did not know how to react but with anger, she did not know how to back down. Sadly. Likewise, for all of these brave souls stating how they would have done this and that, if they were back then I say stop the bull crap. You would have did what you were told, or been thrown in jail (or worse). You talk shit and those white folks would have killed you and your whole family....so stfu.
Nah i would kept my pride no matter what
Tired of these condescending folks thinking they are such good people.
I cry every time I watch this scene…
Lawrence Fishburne.
I think Oprah deserves an Oscar nomination.
Mikee B. And she was nominated for this role
"You wanna work for me? Be my maid?"
"No, thank you."
And they all went about their business.
Don't be ignorant! That too would have been a problem. It's a yes or a yes. Kindly educate yourself on American history! Thanks
@@limitlesscity9740 Exactly! Some people are disingenuous to their core... part of their nature.
I can't believe human beings were treated this way. Anytime you're feeling sorry for yourself because life isn't fair, think about the injustice they faced in past generations.
I agree 💯%. It's sad though. ☹️
The fact that back then a white woman or man was allowed to just touch your kids is insane. Imagine a person walking and touching your son, little brother or little sister, saying your so clean. And you have to watch and let it happen. Disgraceful people can be very horrible.
People were so gross back then.
Sophia is surrounded by an anger mob. It's really bad. As a sheriff makes his way to the scene, Sophia shouts for the Sheriff to help her. The Sheriff just smacks Sophia in the head, rendering her unconscious.
1:44 the guy in the blue jean jacket is doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING💀💀
Everyone came rushing for the white man, but man on black woman, nobody did a thing
This is horrifying that people got treated like this once upon a time
Well some people still act like this never happened or push it back to where injustices happened to all peoples, as if this is less important.
