Found it by accident and haven't heard it in years. The words alone have so much meaning but her voice, I mean her f*ckin voice. There is nothing like it. There is more emotion in this song than 1,000 modern songs.
still love listening to this song with my wife, we almost had nothing, accomplished a lot over the years and gave back with our foundation for orphans :3
The crowd is still there and loudly cheering sometimes. You just have trouble hearing it cause there's no mics in the crowd like they usually do now. You can tell how quiet it is when the crowd cheers at the end.

This song just reminds me how life isn't always what you planned..Sometimes dreams die, and people change. We don't always get what we want out of life, no matter how hard we try. Sometimes all we can do is acknowledge that and try our best to move on and make due with what we have. This song is timeless, and no wonder so many people can relate to it. It sounds so haunting and sad, and yet comforting in a weird way..
Just before my dad died last year my sister (estranged up to this point) and I sat and sang while our younger brother Seth played the guitar. It was a spontaneous moment, but it rang true to us and our family. Dad died on the Tuesday after. Miss you dad. Thank you Tracy Chapman.
She's is an absolute powerhouse of a human. When trauma meets drive it's unimaginable. What unreal talent. Storytelling, singing, guitar playing, performing. Just a true Icon. I love it!!!!!!
i feel like when you check the comments and see someone say they've been struggling and whatever music helped them move on or heal or change, then you know it's good music.
This song kills me. I've been through this in life and then I worked myself to success and then hit rock bottom. Worked myself up again ......71 and still wondering what's next . She is brilliant right here !!!
I feel like this should legitmately be considered in the top 20 songs ever written. It is so incredibly evocative. No matter how many times you hear it, it makes you cry every time.
My twin brother passed away just a couple weeks ago, this song always brings me such bittersweet memories. He showed me this song, this version specifically. He loved it so much, he’d play it and sing along to it 24/7. He always smiled when he sang it, it was one of his absolute favorites. I can’t help but bawl my eyes out now when I hear it but at the same time it brings me so many wonderful memories. I miss you Jake. So much, I love you more than anything. Womb mates forever.
I lost my little brother a few years ago. I couldn't imagine if he was my twin. There is no describing the void it creates inside and out. I'm sorry for your & your families loss. I wish I could tell you it gets easier. Remember and tell the stories. Live, laugh and smile as much as you can.
I'm sorry for your loss. Remember, that a part of him will always live on - through you. Your memories, your shared experiences, he will always be there - in your heart. Stay strong. And feel your feelings.

This song is still in 2021 so powerful. Growing up in Portland Oregon both my parents were drug addicts, dad gone, and my mom in and out of jail. I grew up hard and fast, and worked hard to buy a fast car myself, to get out and see what it means to be living.
I heard this in the 1990s but because I was younger, I never really listened to it fully. In my 20s, I listened to this and now in at 39 in 2022, I am so touched and deeply moved by this song. The words have so much meaning...It brings tears to my eyes when I hear these words. It is relatable in many different ways for many different people and my heart aches for anyone that truly relates to this song. Thank you Tracy Chapman. A true artist with talent, meaning and purpose. This song has touch millions, I hope you know that. From Alberta, Canada-Thank you.
The thing that gets me everytime is how it never sounds like an old song. Her pitch & weight are flawless her tone shifts and she takes you somewhere else in your life in an instant
I remember when the album came out, everyone was listening to it. People were borrowing it, getting it taped so they could listen to it everyday. I still have it and I'm still listening.
This reminds me of when I was homeless 10 years ago alone in debt. I met my husband, and he looked at me with the most sincere heart and said "l want us to start from zero." It was at that moment that I knew God had sent him so I wouldn't walk alone in this world.
I’m crying thinking about the days my wife and I just would walk into the woods with a tent and camp gear in tow. Just to sit together, listen to music and talk about our dreams. I love her today more than then.

This is my girl! Her voice just blows me away! I'm glad to know we have the same name. Tracy, I just love this song. Fast car is truly an American classic!
The individual below is stuck on gender rather than the experience of the human pain. Should the pain be greater or less felt if it were the different gender? Is one over the other more susceptible to the pain? I see a baby girl cry out in pain, I see the baby boy cry out in pain, what I truly see is the person, the human in pain. Refocus on the message of victory and celebrate the human endurance.
Folks, if Tracy had stopped at this song she would have been a legend. It's that good. But no, she went on to write a whole lot of other great songs that will rip your heart straight out. Tracy Chapman is a living legend.
Lord Byron what you said is really ignorant. if tracy chapman had this talent while also wearing skimpy clothes she wouldn't be less of an artist. black women, and all women should be allowed to express their art in their own way. tracy chapman's style was hers. as is the style of all the other black female artists you generalized. open up your fucking mind you rock of a person
It's a relatively simple song but Tracy gave the lyrics life - she doesn't have a band backing her up and yet it still gives me chills. She pulls you into the story - Exceptional performance.
Crying today. April 8 is my birthday, never celebrate them. But was going to celebrate this one because it marks 20 Years since I left an abusive childhood home by an angry single father in my teens. @@samuelongera1791 you just don’t know where to look! The general “mainstream” genre is different nowadays obviously and is what makes the money, but there are good artists and good music out there. Just gotta search deeper
But you definitely can’t take away from the classics though. They are loved a lot because of the memories and experiences connected with them as well, where newer songs often don’t have that authenticity & sentimentality or rawness to them so they don’t have the same meaning to many, even if they are good.
I haven't heard this song for about 20 years. Now as a grown-ass man I'm sitting here crying my eyes out after hearing the fcking *first* line again in all this time.

My sister and I where homeless, literally street dogs. We both worked really hard, and study. Study a lot! We both became teachers. We got a comfortable life. Right before she passed away, she dedicated this song to me. She pointed out. “Be someone” finally be part of something. We were both Argentinians. Value your teachers, are the most essential part of any society.
You are so appreciated, I’m sorry for the loss of your sister and I’m so proud of you both for “being someone”…So much love for the future and thank you for shaping our young minds and hearts 🤍
i agree, people become teachers cause it's a calling not for monetary gain, i was lucky to have great teachers in my life, as a kid i thought i could outsmart them but they already knew what i was doing but incurred me to excel in life which i did
You know how many teachers changed the lives of other people? I live in Canada Never been to a south American country in all my life And yet because of 1 teacher Hablo Espanol! ok Pocito Hablo Espanol : ) But i know where Argentina is And you drink yerba mate And empanadas And BBQ some of the best beef in the world ...Not bad for a kid that not like learning cultures and history And at 14 i was working a job to help my widowed mother ...You teach a soul And you change a life
When I heard this I was in my very early teens. This song immediately hit a note, was nothing heard before. Just the simplicity of the song. The chords pull at your soul. Just the guitar, a beautiful voice, the words... the words.... The magic of a genius. The simplicity of it all. Just a story being told of the odd everybody...
