Antikythera Mechanism | Cinemagic
One hundred fifteen years ago, an archeologist was sifting through objects found in the wreck of a 2,000-year-old vessel off the Greek island Antikythera. Among the wreck’s treasures - beautiful vases and pots, jewelry, a bronze statue of an ancient philosopher - was the most peculiar thing: a series of brass gears and dials mounted in a case the size of a mantel clock. Archeologists dubbed the instrument the Antikythera mechanism. The genius - and mystery - of this piece of ancient Greek technology, arguably the world’s first computer.
At first glance, the piece of brass found near the wreck looks like something you might find in a junkyard or hanging on the wall of a maritime-themed dive bar. What remains of the mechanism is a set of rusted brass gears sandwiched into a rotting wooden box.
But if you look into the machine, you see evidence of at least two dozen gears, laid neatly on top of one another, calibrated with the precision of a master-crafted Swiss watch. This was a level of technology that archeologists would usually date to the 16th century, not well before the first.
The mechanism had several dials and clock faces, each which served a different function for measuring movements of the sun, moon, stars, and planets.
The Antikythera mechanism theories range from out-of-this-world to firmly rooted in scientific evidence, but all of them will change everything you know about technology and history.
The Mechanism Is Proof of Time Travel -- If the Mechanism dates to the second century BCE, and comparable technology didn't begin appearing until centuries later, then its existence might be proof of time travel - maybe whoever invented it was a time traveler from the future, or perhaps it's actually a futuristic device that was brought back to ancient Greece and left there on purpose.
Aliens Gave It to Us -- The Antikythera mechanism is very old and was clearly a huge step forward in technology. So how did the ancient Greeks come up with the idea for it, let alone build it? According to The Ancient Aliens, they didn't:
Beings with advanced knowledge of astronomical bodies, mathematics and precision engineering tools created the device or gave the knowledge for its creation to someone during the first century BC. But the knowledge was not recorded or wasn't passed down to anyone else.
So, aliens either gave humans this device or the knowledge to build it, but didn't do anything to ensure that we learned from or built upon it. Seems like those aliens weren't really thinking ahead.
