    This wrx will not self adjust for the cooler charge temperature without a map & cone filter is going to loose you power. To make more power from blob wrx, ditch the up-pipe cat, replace the whole exhaust with 3" turbo back sportcat/decat, decent panel filter.. dyno remap with someone reputable & run the car on proper fuel aka shell vpower. This should see 280/290bhp. If this is not enough, you need the sti turbo or something of the shelf & probs then look at intercooler but at this point your pushing your luck with the 5 speed.

    In theory, the cooler air will outweigh the possible turbo lag caused by more/longer air travel. Cooler air will also allow higher boost, cooler air contains more oxygen, allowing the engine to burn more fuel creating more power.
    But...
    Without decent remapping the ECU's won't allow boost exceeding the set parameters in the programming, and definitely will not allow more fuel into the engine.
    With a proper remap this might work fine, but like this? Nope.

    @6m30s: "...cooling the air ENTERING the turbo..." Intercoolers are supposed to be installed AFTER the turbo, so they make no difference to the air entering the turbo. The only thing you've done to the air entering the turbo is to fit the conical air filter, a move that often results in slightly higher air temperatures into the turbo as the OEM solution to air filtering often includes cold air inlets.

      @@tracktimevideos5164 Your attempted rebuttal makes little sense. My comment included the quoted phrase about the function of the intercooler where it was incorrectly stated that the intercooler is for, "...cooling the air ENTERING the turbo...". This is in reference to a system point of view, i.e. where the air flows. It has absolutely nothing to do with the physical mounting point of the turbos themselves. Compressing air in the turbo increases the temperature, followed by an intercooler for the air EXITING the turbo. Nobody installs an intercooler before the turbo as that would make no sense. Can you now see that your comment is completely off the mark? Please focus your attention on the quoted phrase that can be found in the video at the time stamp that I also referenced. I'm pointing to an error where the narrator misspoke. Your rebuttal to my comment is incorrect. "Unfortunately you don't know as much about the English language as you think you do...", LOL.

      What I’m saying is that a FMI on its own will produce little extra power in this car. Real gains are predominantly made from increased boost which should be done correctly with a remap. Most tuners would also recommend an up rated fuel pump and bigger injectors for modest boost increases especially on a regular WRX (which this seems to be).

    My old impreza had 158k miles when I sold it never broke down once. Never had the engine messed with or nothing like that.Keep them 100% original is the secret. You see so many that have had engine rebuild ect, leave them alone and they will run for ever

    2001 blobeye? Sti badges? Cone airfilter now sucking hot air? Fitting that front intercooler isnt as easy as he made out. Also i had to make a custom air intake for a enclosed cone air filter.

    Don’t think 40hp. Pod filters are proven to decrease hp. Sock air box is rated to 300hp all you doing is letting the motor breath hot air. As for front mount I wouldn’t be boosting until you have a tune. Won’t see noticeable gains until then.

    It's no wonder people blow their car's if this is the kind of example they follow, so much misinformation and serious lack of knowledge, the presenter might have the gift of talking the talk but he stumbles when trying to do the walk. Doing it like this loses power and makes for dangerous lean running situations when just a straight forward remap will net more gains than slapping tut on it! Without changing the turbo/injectors/fuel pump and remap there are absolutely no gains from doing this just a butt load of losses/risk.

  • @seanaldo9187
    @seanaldo9187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How the hell does a FMIC give you 40bhp...... absolute nonsense 😂
    To start with...... any change to the intercooler setup would require remapping. Just chucking a FMIC on is not gonna get you that kind of power..... all you will get is lots of lag 🙈
    The stock FMIC on a WRX isn't great but still OK until you are pushing 300+ bhp. Even at that, upgrade to the STI top mount intercooler, underboonet plastics and bonnet scoop. A much better upgrade unless you are planning 400+ bhp.
    And don't even get me started on that cone filter 😂

  • @alvarodesouzadossantosjuni6977
    @alvarodesouzadossantosjuni6977 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This kind of upgrade is not so good for daily driving, this is thinking only in performance, the power and torque will come later than standard one...everybody says that unequal lenght and top mount intercooler isn't good for performance, but it is for a standard subaru. The company has knowledge enough to say to you what is better...and this knowledge is the balance between temperature and turbo lag... with unequal headers and top mount is the shortest way for the air to charge the engine. with front mount and equal headers you will increase power but later, for low engines speed is not the best way....

    • @alvarodesouzadossantosjuni6977
      @alvarodesouzadossantosjuni6977 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to increase e little bit, is better to keep top mounted a bigger intercooler. You'll keep the air way short and get lower temps. if you want a racing car, i agree to put it at the front...but its not the case here

    • @xav1uz

      @@AnthroGearhead no it's not an increase in power, this guy means that the mods they did were shit, cos they were, an intercooler with no tune won't add power, pair that with a filter that now sucks in lost air, it drives worse and probaly LOST power.
      Plus, the stock intercooler is good for much more power, this really was an embarrassing video, espically when it blows up because it's a subaru with no tune

  • @brightenupcc
    @brightenupcc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Possibly the worst 'how to' video I've seen in years - expected from fifth gear.
    Why? Pick one from below:
    - Even novices know that the exhaust rumble is created by an unequal length exhaust manifold, not the boxer layout
    - installing a front mount intercooler without a tune just introduces considerable turbo lag and causes the engine to run rich
    - on one hand you talk about the merit of cooler air but then proceed to replace the airbox with a mushroom filter picking up hot air inside the engine bay
    Fifth gear is seriously amateur and embarrassing.
