After utilizing dual monitors for my PC, I honestly cannot go back (although owning a Nintendo 3DS as a child most likely contributes to this factor). I now always prefer to have at least two screens with me. This phone is on my list because as much as I enjoy multitasking, I do not wish to purchase another phone or own a tablet that can split screens. Having a seamless and clean screen is overall nice but this, I just like this. Lenovo's latest dual screen laptop excites me too! I have ADHD so the idea of me doing more than one task in a single device (where separation still exists) and not having to get another device for the sake of doing more than one thing makes me happy. I hope I am making sense hahaha.
Great review! I think the Duo 2 is a misunderstood phone like the defunct Blackberry. I think it's more like a business-type device vs. your common Samsung or iPhone that most people use. What some people don't understand, they tend to put down in a negative light. The Duo 2 is a fine phone that will serve a good purpose for the few who understand the device for what it is.
Especially with these sales. Should be back up for sale shortly in the US and it's been one of the most adorable folding phones. Great for business users
I should add that I'm not sure if it's going to go back up for sale now. Microsoft claimed that they weren't discontinued but they haven't put them back out and it's been months now. It's very possible that they aren't making any more. But you could find them in mint condition on eBay for like $500 or $550. So this is still a great phone
I enjoyed that update, it was long overdue. Many You tube tech reviewers try something once, don't like it and never return to it. This is so wrong in my opinion. They did it to the Google Pixel Slate. That was released with very early software, but now after constant updates it is by far one of the best Chrome "experiencies" out there. Coupled with the excellent keyboard cover it is in my opinion unbeatable. It will also receive updates until 2026! Good on you. Subscribed.
Great review. Thinking on getting it for 2023. With the promise of updates across this year, it's a no brainer. It's for my work and I'm heavily 90% office 365 based
Good luck finding one though! I warranty swapped mine and it's been two months. They don't have any to swap. And I'm hearing (even more since making this video) that they aren't making more. So they may sell at a higher price on the used market. That's the only difficult thing
Best phone I've ever owned - use it for work, for personal, gaming, photos. The two screens took some getting used to, but now I wouldn't trade it for anything. I watch MLB games and NFL games on the two screens and it's incredible. It's too bad there won't be a Duo 3 or any further updates to this one. I'll likely have to switch to the Google Fold or Galaxy Fold down the line, but for now this is a keeper and it works perfectly with the Surface Pen and integrates perfectly with my Surface 8 Pro.
Yeah, I would really like to get one to integrate with my pro 8 as well but them not making a duo 3, and duo 1 is already no longer supported makes me feel like if I get the duo 2, I'll be in a world of hurt within maybe a year. I'm on ebay everyday just in case I come across a really cheap one though
Nice review. I'm still using the original duo, with new android update its the best phone ever, total workhorse, seamless integration with my Windows pc. The camera bump is the main reason I didn't go for the duo 2.
Love the hat. The duo is a nice device. Very underrated. Nice to see people giving the duo more attention lately and seeing how it's turned into a solid device.
I agree 100%. That's why the fold is the better option for most people. It's still pretty good at multitasking and it's better at other things. Even if the duo is slightly better for multitasking that doesn't make it a better phone for most people
This was never a problem for me, but I never dropped a phone in the toilet or the pool. I did wash the phone with a wet towel for both the SD1 and SD2. That was never a problem, so if that is what you need occasionally, then you are fine with these old phones, which are great value, if you can still find them.
Thank you so much. Things have changed, I will say that. Now they aren't repairing duos, to my knowledge they have none available for warranty swaps. So if it stops working you are pretty much out of luck nowadays. I still love and miss the Duo 2. But they pretty much abandoned it since this video. But I do miss it.
Thanks for the information. And great to hear a one year review. Any idea how long this will get OS and security updates for? I like using onenote and something else, to make notes etc. And would love to have a stylus attached so I don't loose it!
Three years from the launch www.windowscentral.com/urface-duo-2-receive-three-years-software-and-security-updates-microsoft. But it did release with Android 11 so looks like it will get up to Android 14?
@@AndroidDigest thanks for the reply. I have an LG v60 with a removable second screen (and 3.5mm headphone socket, quad dac, sd card slot...) and I use it a lot. But I like what Microsoft have done with the Duo and the wider form factor.
I did a blind camera test on my IG of a flower. I asked people which they preferred, the S22 Ultra, iPhone 12 Pro Max, or the Surface Duo 2 with the stock camera and Gcam. Surprisingly, the Duo 2's stock camera won, followed by the S22 Ultra. Not the biggest sample size but still interesting.
Great comment break out bro! In my experience, I don't like my Z fold anymore. It makes sense if a person like the multi tasks like in dual screen Duo 2 which Z Fold doesn't have that capability also you need to switch application on 1 screen. I am going forward for MS duo 2 due what I expected to be better than Z fold series. Thanks for great review that makes me more confident in MS duo 2. Great choice!
Not all the time, no. But yes, depending on how the phone is oriented, and what app you're in, the phone typically will make the bottom screen the keyboard screen. And I'm assuming you could download certain apps and maybe resize it to take the full screen. Even if it's not "full screen" it's normal for the bottom screen to be a keyboard when typing in certain apps
If I'd been planning ahead, i might have bought this instead of my ipad mini and S23 Ultra. As of now, i have way too many gadgets and need to start selling old ones.
This was definitely one of the funnest devices I ever had. But you should probably be glad at this point that you didn't get it. Microsoft slowly fazed it out. It was abandoned for the most part. Yes they did some updates. But if you ever have an issue with it, they don't have any warranty replacements anymore. And unlike other smartphone makers, they don't have other options to upgrade you to. So it might be better to stay away anyway

1: No. You have to open it, it is a bit of a pain. 2: Yes, if you are subscribed to TH-cam premium you can listen to videos or anything, just like you can on a normal phone with the screen turned off. 3: Everyone is very different with this. I normally get 4 to 5 hours of screen on time. But even that metric is a bad thing to measure battery buy. Generally I get OKAY battery life compared to other phones. Not the worst. Not the best. You are powering 2 screens here. So I do think the phone does a good job with battery life but the 2 screens offset it a bit. So it's pretty average imo.
I too, really enjoyed this video. First, it's 10 days ago( current for this duo 2 exploration). Second, you really nailed it ( who it's tailored for). My question to you is " Microsoft is coming out with an ' Android 12L' update with a windows flavor' , has it arrived and you ignored it ? ..Or, clever you , it will show up and you will put out another video ( please do) highlighting the improvement.... I'm thinking of getting one, and wonder if the "DUO 3" is on its way for 2023. You're thoughts would be appreciated! And if you're too busy with your beautiful family, that is cool. Bless you.
Thanks for sharing all this! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes Android 12L has not dropped yet. It's expected to drop in October, they have a Windows event too so it may be hinted at then. I'd make a video on it but I move on quickly from devices. I'm not quite as big as some TH-camrs so I can't afford to keep 5 $1,000 devices laying around. So I normally make a video or two, and then I resell it and get another device. I may get another duo eventually. For now I'll be focused on the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and I'll also be reviewing a Windows laptop (Galaxy Book 2 360). I recommend Shane Craig on TH-cam though. His channel covers the Duo extensively and you should get a good idea of how it works from him. He's a great guy too

@@AndroidDigest yes the Duo 1, wasn't sure if I would like it, but absolutely love it over the terrible samsung Z Fold, didn't want camera bumb and to pay that much, best purchase ever, thnx
With Android 12L I think Google should just have Android for Smartphones, Android for Smartwatches, Android for Foldables, Android for Dual Screens, Android for Desktop instead of Chrome OS and Android for TV; One OS that can scale to multiple devices. The OS should be able to handle full screen differently on a foldable, dual screen, multiple desktop screens.
I just used retroarch and pretty sure it was built in.. the footage is sorta old to be honest so can't remember if I had to do anything else (outside of downloading roms)
@@AndroidDigest okay. I'm still looking for a decent controller to put on the second screen. At the moment it's only build in for Xbox game streaming. But there is no solution for Android games.
I think this thing is really cool. I always think back to the prehistoric days of mobile tech and I’m just blow away by how much is available in such a short span. But of course people today are so entitled and complainy and they want to do is bitch and complain for likes that I don’t even know why companies bother making jack shit anymore.
For sure. I've got a new video on the Duo 2 coming in the next few weeks. Mainly just bragging about it again. But I feel like I have to sometimes because of all the criticism it received. People don't realize how fun a phone like this can be
In your case, I don't think the duo is for you. It's not for everyone. In fact, most people like to use their phone and do one thing at a time, So a lot of people would just have a second screen hanging there or they would have to open up their phone and use it in one-handed mode. And in that case the duo is a little bulky and a little uncomfortable. But it's still a good device for a certain group. That's why I wanted to highlight it
FUCK THE Z FOLD PHONE, I HAD FOR 18 MONTHS AND HATED USING IT OPEN AND ESPECIALLY CLOSED, ALREADY USED MY DUO MORE IN 4 DAYS THAN THE ZFOLD!!! DUO IS THE BEST DUAL SCREEN PHONE I HAVE EVER USED!!! MORE COMFORTABLE THAN MY SAMSUNG S22 ULTRA ALSO
I had the Fold 3 and Surface Duo 2....I Lost them both. Alcoholic LOL SMFH...Duo is better in almost every way except Bluetooth connection in the back pocket. My Duo acted weird while walking and listening to stuff with Bluetooth headphones. The cameras are similar just depending what you like. If you are used to that Cartoony Samsung look Fold is better. Duo looks more Natural.
@@tafb94force29 Dude... You Know there's a thing called Software Updates right ?!... They improve phones over time, and it's been a year of software updates... Maybe it was trash when he had it but that doesn't mean it's going to be trash forever. It's so dope Now.
@@mxbblife_mu Yeah I get that but this phone was and still is in some places $1500. That's a lot to ask for with an initial trash launch with promises of updates months after purchased. IMHO
Not many. But it's excellent for some other users as well. It's not for everyone, but that doesn't mean it isn't an excellent device. That was my main point
Yeah. It's sad because I thought they were turning it around. I actually had something wrong with my screen and they didn't even have any replacements in stock. They gave me a full refund, even without the receipt! But I had to fight for it. Took over a month
After making this video I got rid of it a few weeks later and then I bought it again 😂. I keep coming back to it. It feels super clunky at times and just using it in one screen mode feels heavy and unnecessary at times. But no matter how weird some of these quirks are I always come back to it because it's such a unique and fun device and it's so good at multitasking
It's not only the durability or how good the phone is, also samsung has a much wider reach. You can barely buy this phone Internationally only in a few countries that's all. But if ms did a custom purchase and delivery was included. That would make sense It's a $1400 after all
In your case I can see why you wouldn't want to consider it. I get that! In the US it's been $999 pretty regularly over the past few months and you can buy it for like $750 used pretty easily. But I can see where you are at here.
@@AndroidDigest even at $999 it's not cheap, and used is never guaranteed online. What I meant was, you can go to any country in the world go into a store and buy samsung phones but you cNt do that with Microsoft, it used to be like this with lumina but not with the surface
Just discovered today, that my less than 2 1/2 year old duo 2 is non-repairable, my battery is not lasting like it did, so tried opening a service & repair at Microsoft, and they no longer service the phone!, so I called them and they say they only replace phones, that they are non serviceable! and that they don't have units anymore! and I ask her so if I wanted a battery replacement how much would have cost me, and the lady says since its out of warranty the same as a new phone, but again we don't have stock. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS COMPANY! so much e-waste and such a loss, ($1700 !) a perfectly working phone, to the trash because they designed this device to not be repairable, you cant even find batteries anywhere!. Please bring this up to the attention of people!
Yes, luckily, when I was in warrenty, they gave me a full refund. But this is definitely an issue for people out of warranty. You will have to try other repair shops and see if you could find third party parts. But it's definitely not a phone that will last
I would disagree, but I'm glad you are sharing your experiences in the comments. I don't want only my voice to be heard. It's been fast for me, but feel free to share! Most of those bugs were fixed after a couple of updates for me, and it's been great! But I get it, it's frustrating, and I'm not the only user of this phone, if I had bugs like you, I'd want to point it out too
I think MS has realized that split screens are not the future, well not for Android. Hence no Duo3 this year. A buggy initial release, and just the reality that it is very niche, few of us need or want to have two apps side-by-side. It will garner some fans for specific use cases, but the price is a major barrier to entry for most, so very few will ever get to that decision point. If you can get these on a deal, then have a bit of fun and enjoy the novelty, but half-price at least. I think a few other OEMs had these in R&D, but have all binned them, as they see the biggest software company in the world making a right mess of it, they have rightly moved on to foldable devices. MS has a habit of picking the wrong solution. They laughed at the iPhone, dismissed iPads, and now choose dual displays over folding tech. Luckily they have that money-spinning monopoly of Windows, otherwise...
I just respectfully disagree on there not being a market for dual screen devices. And they've honestly done extremely well with the duo 2. It was a buggy lunch but nearly every bug got fixed within a few weeks and it's been great ever since. I think press coverage and people not giving the duo a chance, I think those are the biggest hindrances, and how Microsoft handled the duo 1. But I think the Duo 2 is nice! Sure, it may be a niche device. Most people do one thing at a time most of the time so they would probably prefer a Galaxy fold. But it's still a really nice phone and I do think there's a good amount of people who really need it for business or multitasking, and if it got a little better press, I think they would start to give it more attention. Just my personal take
@@AndroidDigest It would be nice if it earned a space in smartphone land, but it has probably been a money pit for MS so far, so the question is, how long will MS support these losses? They did the right thing and cancel this year's release, saving themselves further losses, but I feel that they will more likely leverage the design, for one last shot, at WOA to see if they can push out to that Windows monopoly they have.
@@AndroidDigest There definitely isn't a very large market for the duo 2 and I'm not sure how you believe they did well. MS lost a lot of money developing this and I highly doubt they are making the profit to continue this device. I would say the "Foldable" devices if anything are the future and not these.
Watts wrong with 90 refresh rate 60 is great on first generation it saves the battery unlike 120 refresh rate please remember there is no GRAPHINE battery or soild state .

I'm about to drop another duo video in a few weeks. Just bragging on it some more. Love this device!
@@AndroidDigest Awesome to hear, I'm here for it!
Great review.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
man i dream about this phone but all is so expensive here in my country
I think it's for people who don't understand what happens when Microsoft make phones. Their biggest mistake was ditching windows mobile.
What controller app did you use?
I just used retroarch and pretty sure it was built in.. the footage is sorta old to be honest so can't remember if I had to do anything else (outside of downloading roms)
@@AndroidDigest okay. I'm still looking for a decent controller to put on the second screen. At the moment it's only build in for Xbox game streaming. But there is no solution for Android games.
the g cam mod/update i learned from shane craig is really good. thanks for the video.
Yeah it does help improve pictures in some scenarios!
I’m
I think this thing is really cool. I always think back to the prehistoric days of mobile tech and I’m just blow away by how much is available in such a short span. But of course people today are so entitled and complainy and they want to do is bitch and complain for likes that I don’t even know why companies bother making jack shit anymore.
For sure. I've got a new video on the Duo 2 coming in the next few weeks. Mainly just bragging about it again. But I feel like I have to sometimes because of all the criticism it received. People don't realize how fun a phone like this can be
I don't get it that you constantly need to open the duo to use it. I use my phone mostly one handed
That's why I wanted to highlight it
Does it play Apex Legends Mobile?
yes, my favorite Phone!!!
I love the Duo 2. Always will, even if it's weird
FUCK THE Z FOLD PHONE, I HAD FOR 18 MONTHS AND HATED USING IT OPEN AND ESPECIALLY CLOSED, ALREADY USED MY DUO MORE IN 4 DAYS THAN THE ZFOLD!!! DUO IS THE BEST DUAL SCREEN PHONE I HAVE EVER USED!!! MORE COMFORTABLE THAN MY SAMSUNG S22 ULTRA ALSO
You ok dude?
@@tafb94force29 Yeah why do you ask? And thank you for asking
I wanna get this i like the look of it
It is pretty cool looking 🤣
One concerning factor for me is that the Duo 2 has no replacement parts and is not repairable .
That's true. It's not a super repairable device
watchin on the duo 2
Still a great and underrated phone
I use bluetooth or speaker mode i never put my phone to my ear.
Meh. MKBHD said that the device is trash.
IMHO
@@tafb94force29 Well those promises have been kept so far so it's not a lot to ask.
How many times he said "Little Bit" 🤔
I said it a little bit
Surface is an excellent device for an executive. What percentage of the population are executives?
Not many. But it's excellent for some other users as well. It's not for everyone, but that doesn't mean it isn't an excellent device. That was my main point
It's a great phone. I love it
Glad you like it!
David Cross.
Microsoft is either killing this device or launching a new one. The Microsoft website won’t even let you order one.
They have a chip shortage. New supply is coming in. Microsoft already spoke out about this issue.
@@Ronnet oh okay thanks for the feedback.
Yes. Coming soon. UK already got more stock in, so US should follow shortly
I like the phone but as usual Microsoft can't get a phone to stick around for more then a year or so then it goes bye bye discontinued.
Crazy.
Yeah. It's sad because I thought they were turning it around. I actually had something wrong with my screen and they didn't even have any replacements in stock. They gave me a full refund, even without the receipt! But I had to fight for it. Took over a month
Duo is awesome
This device was DOA. See MKBHD said the phone is trash.
Yes it was DOA but it shouldn't have been. It's a terrific device for a good segment of people
*watching on d2*
a
ugh
you had to show me that award
i have serious beef with that guy, what purpose does that 'award' serve really.
Yeah I hear you
Just discovered today, that my less than 2 1/2 year old duo 2 is non-repairable, my battery is not lasting like it did, so tried opening a service & repair at Microsoft, and they no longer service the phone!, so I called them and they say they only replace phones, that they are non serviceable! and that they don't have units anymore! and I ask her so if I wanted a battery replacement how much would have cost me, and the lady says since its out of warranty the same as a new phone, but again we don't have stock.
But it's definitely not a phone that will last
Nobody sells these batteries!@@AndroidDigest
Yeah. It's a huge bummer. This was something I wasn't expecting fully when I made this
It's not water resistant? 🤢
It's not. A sad thing
is it st patrick's day
It's Android Day I guess
The screen is very fragile. The phone is very slow. Often buggy.
I would disagree, but I'm glad you are sharing your experiences in the comments. I don't want only my voice to be heard. It's been fast for me, but feel free to share! Most of those bugs were fixed after a couple of updates for me, and it's been great! But I get it, it's frustrating, and I'm not the only user of this phone, if I had bugs like you, I'd want to point it out too
the problem is quite simple with the duo 2. The form factor is absurdly stupid for a phone. Case closed.
We can agree to disagree. It's stupid for some people but for some people it's extremely practical
I would say the "Foldable" devices if anything are the future and not these.
naa, its sucks. Make no sence. - Phone 14 Pro Max is the king
14 Pro Max is great, but if you hate the Duo and hate Android (maybe) why are you on Android Digest watching a one year later video on the Duo 2 😂.
Watts wrong with 90 refresh rate 60 is great on first generation it saves the battery unlike 120 refresh rate please remember there is no GRAPHINE battery or soild state .
old jock grandad I've got 1s generation is marvellous fantastic quality superior to that dreadful Samsung hybrid fold heavy brick try putting both of these devices in pockets 👏 you'll see the Microsoft surface duo is way way superior quality know on android 12L love it i want Microsoft surface duo 2 as well as 1st generation that's how good Microsoft surface duo is not going back to same old apple relaunched as brand new rubbish no invention.
not interested in a brink called Samsung hybrid fold.
Does it play Apex Legends Mobile?
Yes, it definitely can
