It's insane how Bungie just keeps breaking off from these huge mega publishers so that they can be independent, only to be acquired by another one, every. single. time.
"After the Activision and Bungie deals, the gaming world was split into two - Microsoft and Sony. This marked the beginning of the era called the Console War."
"We'll continue to be an independent" is the same thing blizzard said when they merged with Activision. It means absolutely nothing to me to hear those words.
Bungie is known to break their own promises. Given the effect of this acquisition will take place in no sooner than a year, we are yet to see how their agenda changes
It never works out when a company gets too big. Look at apple and Google. They are so big the needs of the customer are no longer important. They tell the customer what they need at that point not the other way around. Its never good for customers when it comes to big companies.

The studio in name, the talent is back at Xbox so….Sony will own a former shell of a game studio while Xbox owns Crash & Spyro. IP, devs and all. It’s nots a fair comparison.
I doubt this is a response towards Microsoft's Activision/Blizzard Deal. This deal had to be in the works for months now, there's no way Sony did this in a week. This was maybe a response to the Bethesda acquisition.
It depends this could have came quickly it just depends how quickly these companies can agree to a sale or to acquisition I don't think Sony is done I think they will respond in this time they will buy a publisher in square enix and Capcom and announce it the same day Business is about to pick up
It isn't. It's also not even close to the scale of Activision and Blizzard or even Bethesda. I'm sure the companies knew about each other moves couple months ago when talks started between everyone.
Couple clarifications as an avid Destiny 2 player and Bungie fan. Bungie in the past has announced plans to expand the Bungie IP into other mediums than video games such as movies, tv shows, and comics. Also, I'm pretty sure Activision never owned or acquired Bungie as Yong said. They had an exclusive publishing deal Bungie bought themselves out of so they could publish Destiny 2 themselves with no one to please at Activision. Thanks for the update and content YongYea!

This acquisition makes a lot of sense considering bungie wants to expand in movies and TV and Sony is likely the 2nd biggest entertainment company behind Disney (not a tech company like Microsoft). And Sony wants more live service capabilities so actually it shouldn't have been too surprising

While this doesn’t have the same impact as activision I can see why Sony secured a big fps. Thing is I think they spent way to much for just one ip. Would have rather seen Sony scoop up all the Konami ips or square to be honest.
PlayStation exclusivity died in the series several years back, and Bungie already came out and reiterated that because the game is cross platform now, it will be the same game on every platform
Seeing all of these huge studio acquisitions in the multi-billions of dollars does make me question whether companies are worth it. Are Sony and Microsoft vastly over paying for what these studios are really worth? That mobile game company 2K bought was probably overvalued.
I think Microsoft overpaid for Bethesda but Activision/Blizzard makes sense. They make a ton of money. Sony definitely overpaid for Bungie in my opinion

The ZeniMax deal might end up being the best value vs Bungie/Activision/whatever 2K bought.

Destiny is one of the most popular live service games there are. Bungie also has made it clear they’re interested in making things like movies, which Sony can help with
I personally don't think Bungie is worth 3.6 Billion, they don't own Halo anymore, their old franchises are so old most people have never even heard of them, and Destiny 2 has been on a bumpy road lately with it's removal of content making it virtually impossible for new players to play it. They have one new IP that we are aware of but it's still years away. It's in my opinion a bad deal and should be reconsidered.
Most of these games are being overvalued for sure, call of duty isnt that great of a game, people just play because its advertised most (like kids falling for apple, its not that good)

Hey YongYea, Sony never owned Crash. Crash was owned by Universal Studios (now Vivendi Universal); they hired Naughty Dog as part of their collab with Sony, and a contract was drafted for Naughty Dog to make 3 games. Once the contract was over, ND made a bonus game aka Crash Team Racing. Sony then bought Naughty Dog which meant Vivendi Universal kept Crash. Eventually Activision bought Vivendi Universal which meant Crash came under Activision's ownership. Now Microsoft owns Activision, so Microsoft now owns Crash. Crash's ownership is this: Vivendi Universal-->Activision-->Microsoft.
To be fair though, recently with all the nft and lootbox stuff earlier in the years, I still think that Sony and Microsoft Xbox are kind of the more "decent" people in the gaming world. Sure there's always the console war but it feels nowadays more like friendly competition. They both definitely have respected one-another. So both buying studios is obviously to enlarge their portofolio, but both were always transparent when it came to exclusives and multiplatform titles. So right now both of em buying up studios, I don't mind too much.
The day of the Activision announcement Microsoft put out a statement talking about how the deal is really about their meta verse. Mark my words, NFTs are going to be part of their stupid meta verse.
Remind me when Sony respected Xbox? last I checked they paid to keep games off for a year yet told microsoft to honor its contracts. Sony doesnt respect anything, people are just delusional.
This is _exactly_ what I've been afraid of after the Activision buyout: all the other console manufacturers acquiring other publishers like some sort of monopoly game. Limiting companies that would previously release their games on as many platforms as possible to now only one is both determine to the consumer, and the studios that could shut down if sales don't meet their particular console corporations expectations. If this keeps up and Nintendo buys Sega or something, then the standard of big 3rd party games on whatever system you own will come to an end and gaming will become like the film industry, with movies and shows exclusive on one particular streaming service.
I’ll be honest I actually wouldn’t mind if Nintendo buys Sega. at the very least hopefully in the future they could collaborate on a bigger Mario and sonic game rather than Olympics

Bungie never really owned Halo. Microsoft acquired the IP when they bought out Bungie in 2000. That was before a single Halo game had even been released.
Exactly this whole thing isn't that big, Bungie has to make games in order for this to be in any way a good investment for Sony. Destiny 2 is big yeah, but Destiny is the only IP Bungie has since they stopped Halo. If they make a new IP or do something noteworthy I'll change my mind but right now it really does not seem like it was worth the 3 billion Sony paid
@Jackoftrades It's a trilogy of old school Doom-style FPS games released by Bungie between 1994 and 1996. Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity. It was more or less the prototype for Halo. A bunch of elements that were used in Halo came from Marathon like: the futuristic setting, the protagonist having an energy shield, the presence of Artificial Intelligence, the general aesthetic of the game, etc... i mean i hope to see og castlevania revived, but don't think it's exactly going to happen this way since sony's games take visuals as high priority most of the time, so 2D games are unlikely to ever happen.
I remember one of the strategies of the current Sony CEO, when he because CEO, was a focus on licensing. To take whatever IP they currently have and license it. This is why Spider-Man No Way Home won't be on Disney + for a long while. I mean, the only thing of note they made since leaving microsoft was destiny, and its pretty 50/50, you either play it or you don't. It certainly isn't a huge draw like blizzard or bethesda. Honestly 3.6 billion seems like waaaaaay too much for it.

Itll look like this if it continues, sony will have some companies that are decent while Microsoft walks in and buys all the major gaming companies and gives the middle finger to anyone who doesn't have an xbox or pc and sony will then be forced to shut down leaving Xbox and switch as the only gaming choices left
It seems like a lot of media companies, not just gaming ones, have decided that the easiest way to compete with each other is to just buy each other out. While certain companies like Activision Blizzard definitely need better management, I feel like this is a slippery slope.
You mean Microsoft saw the only way they could compete is to buy everyone else because they were falling behind very rapidly, forcing everyone else to have to follow suit or risk them monopolizing the industry.
I remember when I dreamed about not being a weirdo because of gaming in the past, now that it is sort of mainstream, I learned that you need to be carefull with your wishes, like any industry, if it becomes huge, is where bad guys in suits come in and ruin everything
So, let me get this straight: Sony goes out of their way to keep games off of the Xbox, notable examples being Street Fighter V, all the recent Final Fantasy releases, and more. And now, AFTER Microsoft buys Activision, all of a sudden Sony is now the good guys willing to keep all of Bungie's games on Xbox? So it only took $70B to make Sony realize "3rd party exclusives" are no bueno, so now they make 1st party non-exclusives. How about releasing the hostages (Final Fantasy Remake Intergrade, Street Fighter V, KOTOR and Wolverine)?
My biggest hopes from all of this Is that even though Sony and Microsoft are coming to aquire all these big studios, I do hope this shows that SIE and Microsoft need to allow for more independency and creative freedoms while simply funding these studios to do bigger and better things under their name. It does seem like an impulse buy, because Sony overpaid. Even assuming that negotiations were in the works for longer than we know, it makes me wonder how many other devs and publishers Microsoft have been making moves to buy besides Activision Blizzard.
I definitely feel like Sony overpaid for Bungie. Almost 4 billion dollars for only one IP? That’s going to stay multi platform? I’m sure there was plenty of other talented studios that were willing to sell for cheaper. Xbox’s acquisition of Bethesda is a steal compared to this, and they paid more money.
It’s probably because Bungie has some expertise with multi platform and multiplayer games that Sony could tap into for its other studios. I changed my prediction: 2030, Bungie buys out of Sony and sells to Apple for $999 trillion. ;) Seriously, whoever arranges Bungie's corporate deals is a genius, because no way would I have guessed Bungie would manage to sell when they only have one real IP right now and it's not like it has a lot of cachet or resonance in the gaming community, yet somehow managed to convince Sony to buy them. My guess is they knew Sony was vulnerable and shopping, and gave them a sneak peak of their next IP which may well go Sony exclusive, regardless of what Sony is saying now. It's a gamble for Sony and they probably could have gotten better IPs for a better price, but losing Activision Blizzard to Microsoft really hurt them, and it's not the first time Sony has underestimated Microsoft.
When Bungie was owned by Activision, they had PlayStation exclusive Weapons, Strikes, armor, etc. My biggest concern with the PlayStation aquisition is that they very well could revert to that way of thinking. Since Destiny is crossplay now, it would be a real pain if I was fighting against a weapon in PvP that I could not even obtain. It just fuels the stupid console war, and would go against everything Bungie stands for. I have over 2,500 hours in both Destiny and Destiny 2 on Xbox. I really hope they do not go back to their old ways, and just make PlayStation have exclusive items.
We'll see what happens. If there was to be any exclusivity, there is only one company to blame and that's Microsoft. They started this absolutely insane and anti-consumer war by aquiring Zenimax and Activision Blizzard. That means no Elder Scrolls or Starfield for PS, no OW2 or CoDs (in the future) for PS. I think Xbox players would manage not having a couple of mediocre exotics given it's Microsoft's fault.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that would be the case. It would be foolish to make it exclusive. As much as some people dislike Destiny, it still has a decent community(on all systems). Having it multi platform, would ensure a far greater revenue for Sony. Maybe at worst when it comes to Microsoft, all that may happen is, Destiny can no longer appear on game pass. However, that is only Destiny. If Bungie create a new IP, that then may become an exclusive. Sony may be more than willing to have an already established multiple platform game remain that way. But anything new, they might decide to play the exclusivity card. It might come across as underhanded. But it would get a lot of exposure, for any new Bungie IP being a PlayStation exclusive.

To be fair, Playstation makes some of the best games ever imo (at least for my tastes), clearly with a lot of passion from the devs and it seems Playstation gives a lot of creative freedom to their devs. Fortunately, Microsoft under Phil Spencer also seems to act similarly and Nintendo as well to an extent. But I see where the issue is with centralization if these corps get a bad leader in the future with control over tons of franchises and studios
Well, given that Sony have produced some of the best games (certainly in the last 2 generations) it's not like the games that will be poor from them. What is the sense of acquiring them if not for single platform. Jim Ryan and Mark Cerny are Dumb!! Bunjie is also bleeding money with it's live service, that is the reason it's free to play now....
I hope this ends up being good, I remember being so utterly disappointed by the original destiny’s release , the footage the showed was so amazing and everything was cut off to make a shitton of dlc and a lacklustre sequel. I hope they remake destiny with the original story
After they split from Activision they’ve been righting all the wrongs that Activision forced them into (if you didn’t know, the entire storyline of the firstgame was redone completely because of Activision execs not liking it, plus forcing them to cut content to repackage as DLC later, etc.) Though they did also make some blunders themselves, Bungie has put the game/franchise in the best state it’s ever been by far, being able to tell the story they want to tell, and make the content they want to make.
@@gavinzlatar4914 That is bs. The storyline that Joe Staten had come up with was rejected by *lead Bungie devs* (because they thought it was too corny or something), not Activision. That was the reason Joe left Bungie to begin with.
@@gavinzlatar4914 No, he is actually right. The original script or an excerpt leaked and got posted on Reddit YEARS ago. To make long things short, the original script ended with the main reason for having superpowers (The Traveler) becoming evil, which result in its destruction, which leads into the literal END of the game in a single release. This is what Activision disliked soo much, that they kicked the main writer out, as they wanted to make it a 3 part game (which you can read in the contract made public by the court as part of a non-related lawsuit against Activision), which is literally impossible with the then-current script. But they did this over halfway into the development, so they had to write a completely new script, with the existing worlds and levels already build for the original script in mind. If you want to know how late Activision intervened, go look at the very first trailer reel of Destiny released somewhere between 2011 and 2013. It literally has cutscenes in it that were part of the original script, most notably Crow (which is a name never mentioned anywhere, until he became a reality in Destiny 2) and a very specific Vex level, which were both not in the final game. This was talked about in the excerpt. Nobody realized the existence of these scenes until it was brought up in this excerpt. This shows how little time Bungie had to write a completely new story, and why it made soo little sense on release. Even more interesting is that a lot of the major pointers from the excerpt are being slowly put in Destiny 2. The Crow exists as described in the excerpt, the vex involvements, and that specific level from the trailer reel turned into a strike. Also, Bungie is building around the idea of how to get around keeping guardians alive “if” the traveler is no more, by making a new source for having superpowers, with the first one being Stasis. There are too many things from that excerpt that are coming true now in Destiny 2 and have been found by data mining Destiny 1 and Bungie servers, that it must be true. And let me remind you that this excerpt originally leaked closely after the release of Destiny 1. If it’s a hoax, then that must be written by a Bungie employee, which is highly unlikely...

Does this mean we might get a Marathon sequel or remake? That would be pretty cool, especially if it ends up sharing some similarities in game design with Doom 2016.
If we got Marathon that would be absolutely epic.
Marathon's logo is a symbol that pops up pretty often in the Halo games, if you look it up you'll recognize it

I remember one of the strategies of the current Sony CEO, when he because CEO, was a focus on licensing. To take whatever IP they currently have and license it. This is why Spider-Man No Way Home won't be on Disney + for a long while. So I do think that Bungie sees this as an opportunity for a sci-fi streaming series, and with Sony, that is one less hurdle they have to worry about.
I'm hoping Sony uses Bungie to help revitalize Killzone or Resistance. I'd be curious to see Bungies take on either of the those ips personally.

In its earliest days Bungie was the hero of Mac gaming; what a crazy history they’ve had with all the major platforms.
I changed my prediction: 2030, Bungie buys out of Sony and sells to Apple for $999 trillion. ;)
Seriously, whoever arranges Bungie's corporate deals is a genius, because no way would I have guessed Bungie would manage to sell when they only have one real IP right now and it's not like it has a lot of cachet or resonance in the gaming community, yet somehow managed to convince Sony to buy them.

While Bungie would become part of the PlayStation family of studios it would remain an independent subsidiary under Sony in development and publishing and would not be part of PlayStation Studios. Instead, Sony's investment would help Bungie with hiring for developers to expand their work on Destiny's and other planned games. Both companies stated that the deal would not affect platform availability or exclusivity for Destiny 2 but instead was geared towards media beyond video games that Bungie had been interested in pursuing for some time. I mean destiny 2 is in a really good spot right now
After they split from Activision they’ve been righting all the wrongs that Activision forced them into (if you didn’t know, the entire storyline of the firstgame was redone completely because of Activision execs not liking it, plus forcing them to cut content to repackage as DLC later, etc.) Though they did also make some blunders themselves, Bungie has put the game/franchise in the best state it’s ever been by far, being able to tell the story they want to tell, and make the content they want to make.
Bungie makes some of the most satisfying FPS controlling games, and, considering Sony has little to no FPS games in first party, I imagine this deal was a way to acquire a highly-rated FPS series.
It's not like they have a few dormant shooters just waiting to be revived, though.
A new Killzone game made by Bungie? sign me up
killzone? resistance? SOCOM?
Microsoft: 'Buys Zenimax for $7 Billion, making them owners of Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Dishonored, and many more renown IPs.'
Me: OMG no way.
Microsoft: 'Buys Acitivision-Blizzard, one of the largest 3rd party Game companies and owners of one of the most popular if not THE most popular gaming franchise, Call of Duty, alongside World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and all the other shit ton of IPs Activision have locked away in their vaults, for a record breaking $69 billion dollars'
Me: 'spits out drink' WTF NO WAY!
Sony: ' Buys Bungie, who have...Destiny'
Me ( A non Destiny player): Oh...ok, that's nice I guess
In all seriousness I can see the importance of this deal on the game industry as a whole, and the Pandora's box that Microsoft opened by buying Acti-Blizz, but this just feels like Sony buying another games studio, and hardly compares to Microsoft gobbling up entire 3rd party companies and publishers with Dozens of IPs, not too much of a holy shit moment IMO. Now we just wait and see who will be the first to buy Rockstar and EA
Dam, so now they get....destiny? I dont actually remember what else this entails because they no longer own halo..
Well they basically just wasted a couple billion
They never owned Halo. They simply developed it for Microsoft
Yeah they own…destiny and…destiny 2…and…destiny…2
If God of War and Spider-Man isn’t enough to make me get a PS5, Destiny 3 sure as hell ain’t lmao
@@schlobster3929 there is never going to be a destiny 3
Microsoft 2 months later: Hold my wallet
I wouldn't be surprised if this comment ages well...
What will they buy next Atari or EA
2020: bought Bethesda for 7.5B $, too expensive!
2022: actually it was dirt cheap 🤣
Bethesda was overpaid.
The studio had fallen into despair after the bad release of Fallout 4 with terrible sales and then the absolute disaster of Fallout 76. Then presented a jpeg of the new elder scroll. It was not cheap. That studio was dogshit.
@@jessicaabel3481 Elder Scrolls IP alone is worth than Bungie sony got scammed rofl 🤣
@@jessicaabel3481 nope for ID alone it was worth it... the grand daddy and inventors oF First person shooters
@@jessicaabel3481 Stop lying.
"Fallout 4 has overtaken Skyrim, becoming Bethesda’s most successful game ever. In three years on sale, Skyrim sold 20 million copies, between 2011-2014. Meanwhile, Fallout 4 shipped 12 million copies on its launch day."
@@basshead. Fallout 4 has sold due to the overhype of Fallout 3. Fallout 4 was a fucking flop stop lying about it

Sony cant compete with Microsoft financially so the best option for them is to buy small Indie developers and grow them
