Investors are fickle like that, this doesn't surprise me in the least bit. It'll be interesting to see how all of this will affect the gaming landscape and the competition among the big 3 in the long term.

For me sony has simply not made the ps5 itself an enticing buy when I'd normally own both every gen. But with this gen the ps5 is simply worse as a product in almost every way. Worse hardware, more expensive games, being charged to upgrade, worse features/services. Just a whole lot of nope going on with the ps5 right now. Only thing sony is still doing right is still making interesting games but as it stands now for me its making far more sense to just play those games on pc instead of dealing with the ps5 bs.

As someone who finally made the jump to PC gaming after decades of console gaming, I find this move by Microsoft to be a game changer. I realized that most of the first party games on either side eventually end up on PC and so I will never have to choose a side again by having a PC. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft handles exclusively and such but for me its a win across the board.

      @nucklehead718 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly. The truth no one wants to hear or say. Having a buttload of money doesnt make you creative/innovative. Plus YongYea didnt explain what market value is.
Market Value is a company outstanding shares multiplied by it's current market price.
So if a copmany trades at $10 per share and has 1 million outstanding shares. Then that's a market value of $10 million.
So if said company lost $2 off its share price making it $8. With still 1 million outstanding. Then their market value is 8 million with a loss of 2 million.
So yes it seems like a lot but it's only because its considering all the outstanding shares and multiplying it.
That 2 million loss mentioned above is just 2 dollars per share. It just get bloated by the multiplier.
Last time I checked Sony is at 140 billion dollars. They lost 20 so that's only around 14%.

thing is Nintendo first monopolized the market before Sony took over back in the mid 90's with the original PlayStation and then they solidified their monopoly with the PS2 but ever since the PS3 they've been slipping more and more while Microsoft have been improving on their hardware and portfolio
that said I will have to disagree with you on your stance of buying all the publishers being bad because honestly making games console exclusives hurts gaming more than it benefits it tbh so buying publishers isn't really a bad thing
a prime example is Bethesda which everyone is fearful that Activision's games will have the same outcome as Bethesda's did when Microsoft took over which is false because Todd Howard himself has had a very distasteful opinion of Sony as a company and even once said he didn't even want anymore of their games on their console which is why Bethesda's upcoming titles are going to be exclusive to Xbox and PC
all in all the outcome of the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard won't be as bad as people think because there's nothing from them even worth turning into a console exclusive and the most I see happening is they take Spyro and Crash Bandicoot and turn them into exclusives but COD will remain untouched since the game doesn't do well in terms of sales anymore

Who knows, if you play nice enough, we'll let you sell future Doom, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc. on your platform.
I want XBox owned games to be playable on PS and vice versa (and of course they all come to PC). As a PC gamer, I don't see any sort of down-side to that kind of world. But at the least, we can be happy that Bobby Kotick isn't gonna be a part of our gaming industry anymore (fingers crossed).

I think gamers should be very wary of MS becoming a monopoly, which is clearly what they would like to be (as they already are in the PC OS market). Remember what they tried to do with XBox games, by blocking resale of second hand titles? MS is a predatory company, who, once they gain sufficient leverage, will seek to shape the market to their own benefit. They only failed in the past, because of competition from Sony, which forced them to backpedal hard, so yes, having two big players is essential, or else I think the gaming landscape is going to become a very ringfenced affair, controlled by a single corporate overlord.

The stock market is like this, knee-jerk reactions to every move. This isn't really indicative of much, and its not a reflection of a companies' longevity.
Nintendo still competes, so will Playstation, Especially given how strong their console sales are. While losing the Call of Duty audience is a big deal, even if you just look to Playstation Studios' games, you can see there's always going to be a huge market for those IP's, just like Nintendo.
This really just asks Sony to compete, and they've never had an issue competing with the xbox brand, and they never needed multiplats to do it. Quality is enough to succeed in the industry, and Sony still has a generational leg up on Microsoft there, and any IP under Activision-Blizzard doesn't measure up.

The reason why playstation was so successful is because of their slaughter in the PS4 era, and the fact that they have been cultivating and evolving their studios to a point where they can deliver such amount of amazing content. But now that Microsoft is encroaching ever more, buying all these studios, they have that power now to deal some blows and cultivate the studios to something bigger, take double fine for example. But the point is that Sony is still the same juggernaut that it is, it's just being caught up by Microsoft in a game they cannot win since they don't have the kind of money for it.

On the other hand Ubisoft, Namco, Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, EA, etc are all mainly just game software developers (well Sega and Namco got some other stuff in the entertainment industry like anime, anime figures, manga, arcades, etc...granted both profited this year though in their game divisions by about $2B+) so as long as their games profit they will overall make a profit....with that said not sure why Ubisoft went up...can't think of any games from them released recently...maybe they privately showed an upcoming game to investors in a meeting that day that's getting them excited i guess.
Could also just as easily be that whatever caused all of said companies to decrease that much cause Sony's investors in particular to jump ship even more than the other companies (investors in general start trading like crazy at the smallest sign of danger or profit and screw over their stock sometimes just by doing that...especially when they would've been better off staying in...ultimately though stocks rarely coincide with how much money a company actually makes from the products they sell/make and a company with good stock could have terrible product/services sales time and time again (Disney for example over the last few years) or vice versa).

So if Epic games wants to get exclusives, you aren't in a position to bitch and cry about it just because it's inconvenient to you.

I assume you meant "preparing for a future". I hate autocorrect. I think cp2077 shined a spotlight on the fact that even next gen consoles are not going to be able to compete with current PCs. A console will never be as powerful as PC and still be as affordable as they are now. When a current gen gpu is 3k, you can't put em in a 500 dollar console. Plus PC is upgradeable. The next gen games just aren't gonna run on a console very well if at all. Back when Xbox, Nintendo and PS were new (remember Sega) there were PC games you just couldn't get because they wouldn't run on a console. The saving grace of a console was, if you buy a game for console it's gonna work (not so true anymore). You're not gonna have to buy more ram or get a faster cd/dvd (remember I'm talking back then) to play the game. But console games didn't look as good or have the bells and whistles a PC game had.
Companies then began trying to make console games compete with PC. Consoles still aren't as powerful so they compensate by making the games specifically for consoles or distinctly for Xbox or PC to take advantage of architecture shortcuts but that's obviously not working so well now.

It's concerning that Xbox is going the route of 'if you can't beat your competition, buy more studios'. Granted, this purchase isn't going to be finalized until 2023 so there's at least 1 more year where (for example) Call of Duty will be made available to PlayStation. In regards to how long these contracts are for is unknown. So when that contract ends, I'm pretty sure that Call of Duty and the other Activision-Blizzard owned IPs will stay Xbox and PC exclusive. But consider it is their IP, they could (if they wanted to) license out said IPs to PlayStation and Nintendo and charge fees per copy of game sold on other platforms.
On a positive note, I do agree that Phil Spencer will likely be a more respectable individual in terms of handling the employees at Activision-Blizzard as well as IPs that haven't been getting attention for years. At the least we can all agree that seeing Bobby Kotick going away is a good thing for everyone.

So making games free to download means more downloads and more potential micro transactions.

For PC gamers - this is not a win nor will this not change PC gaming. MS own windows and I bet you they will force gamers to the latest OS , whether they want to or not, to play these titles in the future. They could also lock out steam in favor of the MS store, require a MS account to play rather than the existing Activision accounts. This all scream anti-trust and should be blocked by the FTC. As this is not a done deal it could be blocked. The FTC and Justice Dept announced, just hours after the MS announcement, that they are rewriting the acquisition rules for these types of mergers. So I would expect this merger to be reviewed very closely.

For the most part, if MS had not acquire activision/EA/other big publisher, those companies are already very industrialized money machines anyway. And the worse part is that EA/activision WILL acquire smaller game devs and make them worse (see bioware). By consolidating these bigger companies, nothing will fundamentally change in the market..

I'll be honest...they might have a better chance at doing a limited, pre-order only re-run of the systems for those that want to buy said systems again due to their old ones breaking (i still have all my old systems and they still work luckily enough though so wont' do me much good outside of maybe for PS1...though my version of the PS3 can play PS1 games)...better yet if they can get the deals to re-release many of the games on said consoles.
Granted the biggest issue there is simply many of these older games resolutions just look bad on modern day TVs now/in general and need a touch up but that's on the developers hands to do, not the console owners if I'm right (and may be something developers may need to do legally). At best maybe make each version of said console also have an online store for said consoles games....could be like a Nintendo mini charged at a cheaper price i guess but with a disc drive for old disks.
Granted would likely be a loss as far as profits go for them if people can just play games when they have the disc instead of having to buy them again...worse comes to worse when you put a disc in you get charged say $5 to renew the license and half of said $5 goes to Sony/Xbox/Nintendo while the other half to the original IP owner of the game (if they're still around...if not whoever owns the IP or just to the console owner if no one does i guess).

Massive corporate buyouts like this do not increase competition, they eliminate it. Companies that once vied with each other for market share merged to form Acitvision Blizzard and people lost jobs because less competition means less opportunity for employment. This deal may not directly result in people getting fired like many mergers do, but it won't create competition it'll eliminate it. There won't be a need to make games for multiple platforms, they only need to make games for Windows/X-Box, which means they need fewer people to program them.

Yeah this is a pretty bad take.
First off Sony has been doing acquisitions and third party deals to keep Xbox out, it’s only a problem now because Microsoft has the wallet to compete back. To be a monopoly you need to own at least half of the market. There are still 15 major publishers in the US alone outside what Xbox owns. Come back and cry monopoly when Microsoft buys Sony and Nintendo.
Second off, I see so much good coming out of this. Activision is going to get the corporate shake up it needs badly, and we all can kiss Bobby Kotic good bye. With all the studios Microsoft owns and all the IP they’re gaining, a lot of old IP can be brought back. Everything from blur to the skate franchise to spyro and crash. Gamepass is going up even further in value.
Meanwhile Microsoft has been much more pro consumer than Sony has been this gen. $70 games? Paid remasters? Xbox has been updating all their games to next gen for FREE. They have super robust backwards compatibility with improved graphics and frame rates, Sony you can’t go any further than PS4. Microsoft supports PC day 1 alongside Xbox. Sony doesn’t.
The sheer value that gamepass holds now is going to leave Sony with no choice but to compete back. Be more pro consumer. Support PC. Make a real game pass competitor. That’s not a monopoly, that’s Sony being forced to compete back. They don’t have the luxury of having no competition this gen.
And whos going to benefit when Sony is forced to compete again? Thats right, we all win.
