To say that the stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda has been well received is something of an understatement -- after making its debut in 2011, the musical scooped a record-breaking seven gongs at last year's Olivier Awards. This has much to do with the Dennis Kelly and Tim Michin's script and score, as well as some innovative stage design and props. But, as with Dahl's original novel, 'Matilda the Musical' has proved a hit thanks to its wonderful characters -- from child genius Matilda herself, to the villainous Miss Trunchball. Time Out meets David Leonard, the man -- yes, man -- behind the deliciously demonic Trunchball. He tells us a little bit about what it's like to be part of one of the West End's most celebrated shows, as well as lets us into his dressing room to witness his transformation from mild-mannered thespian into heinous headmistress.

I saw this on Saturday and it was amazing! The Trunchbull was one of the best in the whole show! I need to see it again!!!
David Leonard! I've seen him so many times: he was the villain in the York Theatre Royal Pantomine for years! When he got the part in Matilda, I was gutted when he wasn't able to come back for the panto! He really is amazing :D

And to think that only a few years ago he was playing the wiry, nervous Leo Frank in Parade. What a turnaround! Bertie Carvel, you amazing dude.

Actually, no, this was Elise Blake
I am punishing Miss Trunchbull
HOLY SH*T THAT'S A DUDE!
Bite me
It's Miss Trunchbull, not Miss Trunchball.
Because its funnier that way I do theater and sometimes its suppost to be a man in a female role
because a man is more suited to the role.
I didn't realize that was a guy... Wow
It's a male role. In the musical, miss trunchbull is played by a man.
he look creepy
Miss truntball is horrid because she does not let you breath
and she does not let you go toilet
If someone stops me going I will go all over their classroom
Miss. Truntball scared the shit out of me as a child when I was little I followed the rules like if she was watching me at school ready to send me to the chokey Elphaba scared me as a child but now I like her due to Wicked she rocks
