I kind of understand the bottom because of aesthetics but wouldn't the top have been easier to fasten thee table to the legs?

How long should each piece be, to get a table height of around 80 cm?
For a 10cm x 10cm leg (~4 inch), you need each leg to be135cm long to reach a height of 79cm. And it is not linear proportional.
Could I use that base for a rectangular table? Thanks!
