In today's video, I'm going to show you how I built this really simple perfectly round dining table with a very interesting base.
Its a simple build that even the beginner woodworker could take on.
For those of you who wants to know the specs of the base.Each piece are identical to the others, all at 45" in length and 3x3" thick. The cut out is dead centre, width of the material used and half the thickness. for example I'm using 3x3" so my cut out was 3"wide by 11/2" deep.

Was your table shorter? I am debating on attempting this as a coffee table. Wondering if this base design, with a lower height looks right.

1st off - Excellent video and even better work! 2nd - Are you able to go wider on the table top without it being too top heavy and tilting over? In your video it looks like the top is approximatley 4' in diameter. Do you think I can get away with 5' with using the same dimensions on the base? If not, what should I change on the base to go 5' up top?

@@RadDadBuilds can you advise on leg height. You cut yours at 45” for a table height of 30”, is that 30” the underside of the table height or the top surface height?
If I want the table height to be higher do I add length to the legs or move the joint higher up?

How do you calculate the length of the legs easiets, lets say if u want it to be 45 cm high. The angles makes it a a bit tricky
This is amazing. I have a maple table top that needs a base. I just found it!! With the base measurements being 45", how wide is the top?
I believe he said he made a 4ft diameter top. The 45" legs are for a 30" tall or "regular" height table

You can but the angles on the rabbets get really funky.
Love it! Do you know what the weight capacity of the base is? Will it hold a 4 foot cement table?
If you used white oak or a similar dense hardwood I would imagine it would be fine.

Did you consider making compound angle cuts where the legs meet the table and where it meets the floor? I am in the process of building an end table from a cookie using this leg design and your video was VERY helpful. I would also like to incorporate the compound angles I mentioned, but I haven’t determine how to make those cuts yet. I do like the way you sanded them to take the point off, but I would like to make cuts to accomplish taking off the full depth of material. Please let me know if you have suggestions. Thank you!!
How did it go? I'm wanting to do the saMe thing, I've got some live edge silver maple cookies about 6" thick and I'm thinking this base leg style
@@benhutzel1223 It went very well. I am very happy with the result. I was able to trace (pencil mounted in a block of wood) the compound angle on each leg (floor side and table side) and then use a Japanese hand saw to make the cuts. Worked very well!

Thanks, I think it would work well but you would need to go with a wider top to accommodate the wider base

Can you use wood glue? If I use 2x2s doubled up would notches be 2in deep?
You always go half the distance of your material thickness. So, in your example of using 2x2 stock, the notch would be 2 inches wide and 1 inch in depth.
I intend to make that base to serve as an 8 person dining table for my new breakfast nook, could you please tell me if it is as strong as it looks? I think i want to put a glass round top on it bur i'm afraid that the table will disassemble and the top will fall off, would adding some wood glue at the joint be sufficient or do you recommend strategic screws to be sure?
glue isn't necessary at all. its plenty strong enough if you use a hardwood. make sure your cuts are clean so the joints are tight and you will be fine.

Does the table have any tippy spots if you lean on the top?
No not at all, I was expecting a little if someone leaned on it between the legs but it doesn't move at all.
Do you think these legs would work just as well with a a standard rectangle table?
Depends how long, if you went with a 5ft then I imagine it would be ok but anything long would be pushing it. You could always to two bases, one each end. The 4ft round that I made is very sturdy with no tipping points at all.

Dang! I'm trying to make the legs now for my neices wedding table. I thought how awesome and amazing simple. Unfortunately the part where the 3 legs locked together was so quick. I'm convinced that it's an optical illusion. I am unable to get a level symmetrical base with these legs cut as shown. I must be missing something as to how they lock together... I'm struggling!

How long would the legs need to be for a table height 0f 38" or counter height?
You'll need 57inches. 45/30 is a ratio of 1.5.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2.... So if you want 30" diameter to match table top and 30" in height, it would be 30^2 + 30^2 = c^2. Which c^2 is about 42.43" in length (length of legs when you cut). You can round it down or up to make it easier for cuts.
Have a 44 inch round top .want a 30 inch high table ....what should the lenght of the legs need to be
