There are many hints about Fiona's father being the Frog Prince (frog kissed by a princess and becoming human) besides the one you caught about the other talking frog at the bar recognizing him:
    - His bedsheets and furniture are green
    - There are paintings of lilypads on his walls.
    - The Queen mentions their first date by the lily pond.
    - The Queen's name is Lillian and he calls her "Lilly".
    - The Fairy Godmother threatens to send him back to the pond.

    • @KrazzeeKane
      @KrazzeeKane 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +53

The Shrek movies were luckily still some of the last kid movies that properly understood the whole Don Bluth philosophy, I don't remember the exact quote but it's something to the effect of,
"You can show kids very surprisingly violent or adult things in animation, just so long as the good guys *ALWAYS* win at the end."
And it's very true. As long as a young child gets the happy ending and proper resolution, they don't mind and may even prefer a more interesting movie like that.
Think of all the older cartoon movies we watched that had ridiculously adult things in them, like 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' lol. Roger Rabbit has scenes and situations which are far filthier than anything in this movie, and I wish more movies still understood this and knew it was ok to push boundaries with kids stuff. Kids and adults both enjoy it!

Fairy Godmother is the best villain ever. If you connect the dots she had been working behind the curtains all the time. She granted Harold his wish to become human and turned him into a king, then she cursed his daughter so her son could save and marry her so she could be part of a royal family and rule the kingdom. It would've worked if Shrek didn't make it to the tower first.

Shrek The Third has hardly any of the random unexpected things you'd not expect to see where Shrek exists, like real world references, jokes for adults that kids wouldnt get, riffs on other films and pop culture stuff, and I felt it suffered for that. The fourth film, while no masterpiece, has a reasonable "be careful what you wish for" thing about it, and a brilliantly creepy little villian.

I really hope you guys watch all 4 movies, such a great franchise. And I am already arguing against the comments who will be saying to skip the 3rd one, for me the 3rd Shrek suffers from the same problem of the 3rd Godfather, is a good movie in a franchise of great movies, so every other movie is better, but I completely disagree with people who say they are bad movies or that you should skip them.

Yep. Shrek 4 is not the best in the trilogy (there was no Shrek 3!), but it's still a good movie. Puss in Boots: the last wish is as good as (or even better than) the first 2 Shrek, but the first Puss in Boots is "meh", not really worth a watch, even though it's not terribly bad. So I think they should watch Puss in Boots: the last wish and Shrek, and they don't need to watch more

A couple of dumb time-sensitive 2004 references that may have gone over your heads:
The poster of Justin Timberlake was extra funny when the movie came out, because Cameron Diaz was actually dating him when this movie was made.
The little white dog with the bow on it from the "Nip and Tuck" sequence was a reference to one of the little dogs Anna Nicole Smith's used to carry around. Her reality show was a airing at the time.
Non-2004 reference: I like how Gingy takes them to the Muffin Man to make the giant gingerbread man because Farquad questioned Gingy about the Muffin Man in the first movie.

Ok So the Puss N Boots films are there own stand alone films but loosely related to the Shrek films in Spirit. Puss N Boots even got his own Spin off Netflix series I believe for a time. The first Puss N Boots film is his origin story while the second one (The Last Wish) takes place AFTER the current Shrek films so you can watch them whenever. As for Shrek 3 and Shrek 4... the fandom refers to them as the MEH films of the franchise. Their ok but aside from more introspective into Shrek and Fiona's relationship not much is added to their story. So you can watch them or not.

Even though Shrek 3 and 4 aren't as revered as the first two, I'd definitely say give them a watch. They both had a theatrical release and did relatively well, so they aren't as cash grabby as what you might stereotypically think of. There's still heartwarming moments and character growth moments. The humor is still pretty good too. I personally think the 4th is better than the 3rd and if I had to rank all of them I'd say Shrek 2,4, 1, 3.
Honestly, the cash grabbiest aspect of the Shrek franchise was the holiday special and the Shrek the Musical. Those two are definitely a waste of time in my opinion.
As far as the Puss in Boots movies are concerned they essentially bookend the Shrek franchise. The first Puss movie is his origin story so it could be considered a prequel to Shrek 1. The second Puss movie for sure happens after the Shrek movies and could be considered the finale of the series because it wraps up his character arc which didn't happen in the Shrek movies.
