1994 was THE year for Jim Carrey. Before that he was mostly known for "the white guy" in the sketch show "In Living Color" and had the lead in the '80s vampire movie Once Bitten. But The Mask, Ace Ventura, and Dumb & Dumber all came out in 1994. And Jim Carrey skyrocketed to fame.

The Mask is actually a comic book adaptation that is hyper-violent. The gore is fairly tame, but the Mask definitely does a lot more murder and destruction than simple mayhem. Also, like most Carrey movies, he was allowed to do a LOT of improve. Yeah, and Diaz is just... entrancing. The swing section in particular did something to young 12 year old me lol. Actually, despite the comic book, and despite the fact that they let Jim Carrey pretty much do alot of improve in the movie, the movie was mostly based around the animated series on cartoon network, and honestly as someone who was a huge fan of the animated series as a kid even before the movie came out, the movie perfectly represented the craziness and goofy/cartoony attitude of the Mask.

Funny enough, the Mask was originally a comic book that was much darker, and super violent. Totally worth looking into. The movie is great, but it’s interesting to see how much they changed to make it appeal to a wider audience. I think it would be awesome to see Jim Carrey reprise Stanley Ipkiss, but make a film in the style of the comics. At least that’s a different take on the Reboot 😁

Yeah I read a few of the comics recently, they really lean into the Mask's sheer power and violent insanity.

In that Mask comic book series, Ipkiss is killed by the cop who then takes over as a very violent crimefighter (think Batman on steroids on a caffeine overdose) who then in turn is killed by the Cameron Diaz character at the end of the story who then takes over. Before, there was "Dick Tracy" and "The Rocketeer", which were light and colorful and exuberant. On the other end of the spectrum were "The Crow" and "Blade" which were darker, more adult-oriented fare. Hollywood still wasn't sure which direction to take these adaptations around this time.
