  • Bonanza - Episode 46 - The Ape - Hoss mentors a lonely, mentally challenged man who, with superhuman size and strength, becomes extremely dangerous when angered.
    The Ape
    Director: James P. Yarbrough
    Writer: Gene L. Coon
Stars: Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, Lorne Greene
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 17 December 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Hulking, childlike Arnie Guthrie (Cal Bolder) can't control his temper-and even worse, he doesn't know his own strength. Clumsily attempting to force his attentions upon saloon girl Shari (Karen Sharpe), Arnie is reprimanded by Adam and Joe Cartwright, whereupon he beats up both men! Regarding Arnie as a kindred spirit, Hoss Cartwright (who has likewise been "misunderstood" because of his bulk) tries to befriend Arnie and channel his strength and hostility-with unexpectedly tragic results. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"While Leonard Nimoy had a role on Highway Patrol in 'Hot Dust' (1957) and one on 'Dragnet' three years prior in 'The Big Boys' way back in 1954, his brief appearance in the beginning and end of this 1960 Bonanza episode holds dear to my heart as I watch it today on Saturday afternoon TV.
Leonard Limoy died at 83 just yesterday; February 27th 2015 and today's scheduled episodes of each Bonanza and Perry Mason have been graciously preempted with these early debuts. From 'Queen for a Day' in 1951 to Star Trek 'Into Darkness' 2013. His 62 year career is an American and global treasure highlighted by one of the most iconic caricatures ever played in the brief three year run of 'Star Trek' from 1966 to 1969 as the infallible; never failing; always effective; and oh so unforgettable; Dr. Spock.
..just as he spoke, just as he lived, may each of us:
"Live Long and Prosper."" Written by zoocar-35505 on IMDb.com
    "Characters involved: Sheribelle and Arnie
Cartwright: Hoss, though all the Cartwright's played a part in this episode.
When Arnie, a big man with an "ugly" face walked into the saloon, the saloon girl made fun of him. This caused Arnie to get mad. The fight that followed was a humorous one, but there was nothing humorous about this story.
This episode reminds me of the movie, "Mice and Men." Arnie is strong, but simple-minded which can be a deadly combination. Hoss wants to help him, but Arnie just had too much against him.
I will say that I absolutely hated Sheribelle. What she did is one of those things that I cannot stand! Any person who will pretend to like you only to make fun of you with her friends is pretty horrible. I really wanted to smack her face!

The saloon keeper was none other than Leanard Nimoy (Spock on Star Trek). He befriended the ape man (Cal Bolder) and he got on Star Trek at least one episode. Cal was in the marines in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart, had a football scholarship to college, and later became an LAPD cop. He pulled over a producer and gave him a speeding ticket the producer was enamored with his size, (6 '4" 260 pounds ) and offered him a chance to act, Cal grabbed it and had an excellent acting career, by the way, he was quite intelligent, lol, great acting job in this episode.

Truly a sad episode and one I can't watch again. He wasn't a truly bad person just misunderstood and mentally handicapped who was too strong for his own good.

    • @samuelrosenbalm
      @samuelrosenbalm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That description of yours applies to Lenny in "Of Mice and Men", but not Arnie. The latter was mentally handicapped, true, but that is no excuse for being so quick to jump on people, or for murdering a vagrant and taking his money. His statement that the money "wouldn't do him no good" serves to demonstrate that he very well understood death. Yet he still murdered - at least twice. Adam and Joe were correct about him. Adam warned, "We didn't do anything to make Him that mad, but if you hadn't come along, he may have killed somebody." Lenny, on the other hand, was not quick to fly off the handle and hurt someone. He was truly gentle and never "meant no harm" or "want no trouble".. He killed in a state of confusion - Arnie killed in a state of rage. Arnie, despite his handicap and whatever endearments he may or may not have possessed, was every bit a murderer.

In my opinion, this episode is among the best of the Bonanza show. Not about cowboys et al, but about the fragile hearts of people. Cal Bolder was superb in his role. Given that most of Bolder's Hollywood roles were, well, problematic, I bet he appreciated this job. Writer Gene L. Coon wrote a stellar script here. DirectorJames Yarbrough superbly led a sensitive story. Rodolfo Hoyos, Hollywood unsung but always brilliant in his roles, big or small. Dan Blocker is amazing here. Leonard Nimoy: in this work, just Ok. The David Rose music score is haunting with the tragic trumpet. A great episode.

Marc Durso's comment makes sense, I was just thinking about while acting one must create a scenario of drama, anger, fear, anxiety, irony, revenge, and joy, happiness, excitement, etc. This is obviously training and it would take an extraordinarily intelligent person to accomplish these fine attributes. Creating a scenario people are enticed to absorb, and become enticed by, the superb acting according to the script.

39:52 The sheriff asks ben where Hoss is going and Ben avoids answering. Then at 40:32 the sheriff asks Ben if he's ready to lead them out to granite point. Suddenly out of thin air he knows where the guy went?
38:35 Ben tells Hoss he killed a girl last night and Hoss doesn't really look surprised or shocked. Very poor acting from Dan Blocker in that scene.

This doesn't make sense Joe is to you young to drink not Michael Landon but Joe is only 20 here at least he has to be cause on season 4 on one ep Ben tells a girl Joe just turned 22 so that mean season 3 he was 21 season 2 20 and season 1 19. And if you have to be 21 to be in a bar Joe shouldn't be in there on season 1 and 2 drinking

Before people knew heat kills germs, they drank way more beer than they drank water. This includes children. Beer got heated because people thought heating it was part of the process, and then they let it cool. I think germs were discovered by a Frenchman, Louis Pasteur.
