I love the writing and the philosophy of Mark Twain. His quotes are simply marvellous. I have loved Bonanza and the Cartwight’s Ponderosa since the first episode and I am still loving it all these years later.
Absolutely the best TV series of all time. I still love the episodes, even if I have seen a number of them 4 or 5 times. This was Television at it's very best
A truly wonderful very early episode, with a great job done by the versatile Howard Duff. Look at how young they all were - and my Lord, Pernell is just an eye-stopper. Little Joe had to be barely 22 at this point. There was a great deal more gun shooting in the beginning, changing gradually as the episodes progressed. A wonderful, rousing episode!
@Joe Owens. I agree. This was a very exciting episode. I read that Michael Landon was only 22 years old when the "Bonanza" series began. If you do the math, the "Bonanza" series began in the fall of 1957. Since this episode was broadcast in October 1959, then this was the 3rd season which means that Michael Landon was 24 years old. I also agree that Pernell Roberts was an eye opener. Wow. Did you notice that all 4 of the actors wore different clothes during the first 3 seasons than they did in the later seasons? I thought that was interesting.

Thanks for the historical knowledge. They could have gotten a younger actor to portray Clemens, though. The actor looks like he's in his 40's. Clemens was just 25-26 years old in 1861 (born November 30, 1835).

The West even still has its features, as to the people of it, that of minding one's own business, that of minding one's way with peace, and that of no bigotry, except that against destructive behavior, bad character. In the West, it is legacy-wisdom to note a man's behavior, not the tone of the skin, but the manner of character that he shows, and to walk in peace, minding one's own affairs, not someone else's. There is much talk these days online of what they call "racism," though there is but one human race. They work to divide the people by grudges, but it is character that counts, not skin tone. It is Ethics that count, not ethnicity. Only people that have lived long in the West understand the reality of what I've written here, for the West is still different from other places.

It was while watching this episode that Adam became my favorite Cartwright, and he's been my favorite ever since! I love how he nonchalantly punches Sam Clemmons in the face, and then just walks away! Always cool, that eldest Cartwright son! Great episode.

I LOVE Dorothy Green and Howard Duff! Dorothy acted a number of times in Gunsmoke episodes...she was very crucial in making her wonderful talents operative so that the shows were very fine. She was also here, in the other great western TV show, Bonanza. She is lovely. Duff was married to the fine Ida Lupino and my near greatest kind words directed at me was a lady friend who loved Howard and said I could be his twin...THAT made my day.

I have to admit Adam was a great part of the show. It's kind of sad he decided to leave after 202 episodes. But the Bonanza episodes were all great episodes.
@@dennishardy3869 technically 7 and a half. And the ratings only stayed high for 3 more years. After season 9 the show became terrible each season until it ended. The cast was slightly glad it was over at that. Even dan blocker prior to death thought the scripts were terrible except for on occasion. The Adam years are the only time the show is really complete and intact.
Pernell Roberts was in many regional theatrical musicals during his career including Camelot, The King and I, The Music Man, and that unfortunate musical version of Gone with the wind, plus a TV version of Oklahoma.
Season One of Bonanza is my favorite because many episodes were based around real people in Virginia City. Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) didn't actually arrive until 1861! Although I love TOM SAWYER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN, my favorite book by Twain is ROUGHING IT, where he details his time in Virginia City 1861-64. Fascinating book as it is a genuine time-travel-trip back to the REAL Old West. Hollywood seems to think the Old West is all cowboys. In reality the wild mining towns like Virginia City, Deadwood, Tombstone (and hundreds of other similar mining camps and towns) made Dodge City and the cowboy era look tame by comparison.

This is the first time that I can remember seeing a popular western TV series where they used real cap and ball revolvers instead of yet to be invented 1873 Colt Single Action Army revolvers. The only thing that was missing was the big cloud of smoke from the black powder.
In later episodes they just use the Colt SAA. I suppose they figured there are enough unrealistic aspects already, to bother with the fact that this is the 1860s.
That was really exciting watching all 4 of the Cartwrights fighting the outlaws- especially Adam! He really took out his anger against the outlaws! I don't remember seeing him fight so hard! I liked the way that while the Cartwrights were fighting the outlaws, Samuel Clemens came up with the name Mark Twain for a pen name.

Interesting how the writers intertwined two stories into one, a young beautiful maiden with a murdered father, made comfortable in the Ponderosa and encouraged to her own beauty, and newfound safety. And Josh, Mark Twain also finds sanctuary in the safety of the mighty pen and in the wings of the protective Cartwrights'.

Historically accurate in that Samuel Clemens really did work for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City. It's just odd to see him depicted as such a young guy. He does pop up in another Bonanza episode when he's older. But man, them denizens of Virginia City sure drink a lot of whiskey. I wonder if they even considered alcoholism a disease back in the 1860s (when the events depicted in Bonanza are said to have happened).
Samuel Clemens own Chevrolet different houses across the USA.It's one that didn't happen to be in Hartford, Connecticut.. Which is now is a museum.. One of you few houses you will see in the USA.. Is with a big window right above the fireplace mantle... So Is Mark Twain, could see snow and fire at the same time ..
I enjoyed these early episodes where the Cartwrights were more clannish and quick to pull guns for what they believed in. It may not have been actually the "the right way" to handle things, but from an entertainment aspect it was a lot more fun. I also enjoyed the compassion and equality they showed in the later majority of the 14 seasons, but their angelic behavior could be a little over the top at times.
This is so amusing. As someone who is pushing 80 years old, and having got my first horse at the age of 12, I can inform people that horses do not whinny as these old westerns show. A horse will whinny when he wants to be fed. And maybe he will whinny at other horses. That is it.
Yes.And I flinch sometimes when the horses are yanked back(no pun intended)which must hurt their mouths.I still miss our horses after all this time in exile.All such characters.Thankfully,still got my cats.But no dog for three years.I live in hope.
@@susanmccormick6022 When they jerk on the horses reins like that, it will eventually deadened the horses mouth and the horse will be less responsive. It is better for inexperienced riders to use a hackamore instead of a bit.
BONANZA is a lot of fun when they delve into actual Western history--an approach that more authors should take. Samuel L. Clemens--aka Mark Twain--did actually spend time in Virginia City, and he did come up with the pen name "Mark Twain" from his riverboat days. Howard Duff who played him was a very fine American actor who often got work that didn't really challenge his talents. See the TV mini-series version of EAST OF EDEN for Duff really pushing to boundaries. He was married to actress Ida Lupino, and they did a TV series together, MR. ADAMS AND EVE. Mark Twain has fallen out of favor with some sectors of the reading public, but he remains one of America's greatest authors. Read ROUGHIN IT for an account of his adventures in the Old West. If you don't read Twain, you're cheating yourself out of the best of the best.
Its interesting how much things changed in that first season. Everyone was like, mind your own business, we don't cotton to strangers around here, etc. Then by Gift of Water, they were willing to give up parts of their own land to help people, always welcoming strangers in, etc.
Rosemary was there with them to the end of the episode, but she was never seen again. I was really expecting to see her in episode 6, but as I mentioned, she was never heard from again. They could have at least written her off in an upcoming episode...smh. I think she would have made a nice addition to the family, but of course, they had something against making women a permanent staple on the Ponderosa.
@@mjohn9199 I believe it was actually the opposite. The show kept the men single so female fans could pine away for them. It's sad but even today people can react badly to a love interest being paired with their favorite character.
It's just astounding that Mark Twain personally managed to accidentally pay visits to both the Cartwright family on Bonanza as well as the McCain family on the Rifleman. Does anyone think that was only an accident or that he did it on purpose? Please make your opinion known!
That's because the Ponderosa covers a very large part of Nevada and there were a lot of greedy people who wanted to steal their land and cattle. Hmm. 🤔. That makes me think of the millions of illegal immigrants that entered America since January 20, 2021.
But printed matter lasts beyond the life of the writer. A gun involves no permanent evidence of your existence, ever. So, which is stronger in the end?

She is really not that beautiful. Actually, I think she is kind of homely.

Historically accurate in that Samuel Clemens really did work for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City. It's just odd to see him depicted as such a young guy. He does pop up in another Bonanza episode when he's older. But man, them denizens of Virginia City sure drink a lot of whiskey. I wonder if they even considered alcoholism a disease back in the 1860s (when the events depicted in Bonanza are said to have happened).

Samuel Clemens own Chevrolet different houses across the USA.It's one that didn't happen to be in Hartford, Connecticut.. Which is now is a museum.. One of you few houses you will see in the USA.. Is with a big window right above the fireplace mantle... So Is Mark Twain, could see snow and fire at the same time ..

I enjoyed these early episodes where the Cartwrights were more clannish and quick to pull guns for what they believed in. It may not have been actually the "the right way" to handle things, but from an entertainment aspect it was a lot more fun. I also enjoyed the compassion and equality they showed in the later majority of the 14 seasons, but their angelic behavior could be a little over the top at times.

This is so amusing. As someone who is pushing 80 years old, and having got my first horse at the age of 12, I can inform people that horses do not whinny as these old westerns show. A horse will whinny when he wants to be fed. And maybe he will whinny at other horses. That is it.
Yes.And I flinch sometimes when the horses are yanked back(no pun intended)which must hurt their mouths.I still miss our horses after all this time in exile.All such characters.Thankfully,still got my cats.But no dog for three years.I live in hope.
@@susanmccormick6022 When they jerk on the horses reins like that, it will eventually deadened the horses mouth and the horse will be less responsive. It is better for inexperienced riders to use a hackamore instead of a bit.

BONANZA is a lot of fun when they delve into actual Western history--an approach that more authors should take. Samuel L. Clemens--aka Mark Twain--did actually spend time in Virginia City, and he did come up with the pen name "Mark Twain" from his riverboat days. Howard Duff who played him was a very fine American actor who often got work that didn't really challenge his talents. See the TV mini-series version of EAST OF EDEN for Duff really pushing to boundaries. He was married to actress Ida Lupino, and they did a TV series together, MR. ADAMS AND EVE. Mark Twain has fallen out of favor with some sectors of the reading public, but he remains one of America's greatest authors. Read ROUGHIN IT for an account of his adventures in the Old West. If you don't read Twain, you're cheating yourself out of the best of the best.
Its interesting how much things changed in that first season. Everyone was like, mind your own business, we don't cotton to strangers around here, etc. Then by Gift of Water, they were willing to give up parts of their own land to help people, always welcoming strangers in, etc.
Rosemary was there with them to the end of the episode, but she was never seen again. I was really expecting to see her in episode 6, but as I mentioned, she was never heard from again. They could have at least written her off in an upcoming episode...smh. I think she would have made a nice addition to the family, but of course, they had something against making women a permanent staple on the Ponderosa.
They didn't want any romance in it. Apparently they don't think women watch Bonanza.
Which was one reason Pernell Roberts got fed up & left.
@@mjohn9199 I believe it was actually the opposite. The show kept the men single so female fans could pine away for them. It's sad but even today people can react badly to a love interest being paired with their favorite character.

It's just astounding that Mark Twain personally managed to accidentally pay visits to both the Cartwright family on Bonanza as well as the McCain family on the Rifleman. Does anyone think that was only an accident or that he did it on purpose? Please make your opinion known!

That's because the Ponderosa covers a very large part of Nevada and there were a lot of greedy people who wanted to steal their land and cattle. Hmm. 🤔. That makes me think of the millions of illegal immigrants that entered America since January 20, 2021.

The last season started in the fall of 1971. It ended in May 1972. Dan Blocker died in 1972. Do the math. 1958 plus 14 years equals 1972.

I got married in Reno in 1965, and took a little ride to see what Virginia City was all about. While I was there, I saw a preserved office of Mark Twain in the basement of a building. I don't know if it was authentic, because it had an old typewriter in it.
