How Jurgen Klopp Broke Man City's System (And Kevin De Bruyne)

  • Missing 5 of their regular starters (and with more still returning to fitness) Liverpool went into their crunch match against Man City as sizeable underdogs. But, after surviving an opening period that could have seen the visitors well ahead, Jurgen Klopp made a major change to his side's approach and slowly wrestled control away from Pep Guardiola.
It's a game that could have gone either way, but Adam Clery analyses the events and tells us why Liverpool would have been the rightful owners of the 3 points.

Mate, as a Endo defender from the beginning. Anyone who actually watched Bundesliga and Japan knew he was very good, but felt he would always be too loyal to Stuttgart. You need to do a vid on his impact as a whole.

Yup well said. Endo is an exceptional player and one that doesnt always get the credit for the unbelievable work ethic he deserves. His running, positioning, tackling, precision passing, pressing and ball winning is, in my opinion the best in the league.
Endo is a master midfielder. Kudos to whoever spotted him at Stuttgart.

Liverpool can sure praise their luck that they got their hands on this guy. He made City's midfield look like fools. And I honestly don't know where he gets his energy to play 90+ minutes almost every game and still be on everyone's asses instantly with a clean tackle. He's a different kind of beast with a really good head on his shoulders, flawless work ethic and attitude.

Its been a long time since ive seen KDB made essentially irrelevant in a game. Hes always a threat, hes arguably the best or top 3 centre midfield players in the world.. but in this game he was just completely shut down by endo and macallister. For a neutral, a great game to watch. For a liverpool fan, another VAR robbery and come the end of the season if liverpool end up losing the title by a couple of points then the tottenham farce and this game will be remembered as the matches that the referees took the title away from liverpool with their ineptitude.

Wow, such a well put together analysis.
Liverpool fan here. I feel sad and disappointed by the result, I couldn't really get over it, still. Mainly because our players gave everything for the win. They dominated City, created so many chances, the way they played was simply unreal. All they lacked was the finish. With a little bit of luck Diaz alone could have scored two more, Szoboszlai also with that header.
Of course, it was a clear pen. We could have won if the ref had the balls to give one against City at 90+ minutes, and I think if it was the other way around, or if the foul happened anywhere else on the pitch, it would have been a penalty/yellow/free-kick. But ultimately we should have won it on the field with those magnificent attacks ourselves.
I still believe in these guys and Klopp, though. They can still do it. Injured players are now coming back, we can defeat anyone we have to face on the last 10 games. And I believe Liverpool will.
If Arsenal beats City and goes on a run for the remainder of the season, then that's out of our hands, but these lads will do their utmost best to conquer the league with Klopp one last time.

    • @bearimo2867

It's not out of our hands, we just need to score a few more goals to catch them, we have some games coming up where that could happen. If we match Arsenals away 6-0 against Sheffield Utd at Anfield against the same opponents our GD will be almost the same.

Klopp is very industrious and lets no experience go to waste. Good or bad....he will use the information gathered from this match and build on it in another. I agree though this game deserved a winner and in the end i feel it should have been Liverpool....they reminded city that there are no immortals , i saw fear in their eyes....and thats not something you see often with Man City. Plays in the center but would always drop deep in midfield to add pressure and contest possession.
Not as prolific with goals like the other two. But that’s because he had a fuckton of various responsibilities tossed onto him to handle. Creation, holding, pressure, space and defensive support. Bobby was truly the engine of klopp’s heavy metal psycho pace team.

Cards on the table. Liverpool fan… my thoughts are Liverpool haven’t had a consistently good 90 minutes this season. We have had more 50/50 decisions go against us than every team including forest. The start of the season could have destroyed a fragile squad when 2 players chose blue over red. Injuries should have eaten away the confidence that had grown. Then just as we start to feel good the boss says I’m cooked boys. And still we are joint top of the league with ten games to go, in the 6th round of the cup, quarters of the europa league and have a cup in our back pocket won mainly by a collection of very game children and one massive grown up.
If we get two or three players back for after the break and crucially arsenal and city get even one of the weeks February we had for injuries then the lot is there for us to take.
My reasoning is simple we have conserved energy all season by only really playing in the last 20 minutes plus stoppage time of every match so far.
But what a whirlwind of an endgame we are in for.

Regards my feelings about the result as a LIV fan after 48 hours of reflection ... Disappointing not to be 4 clear of them after such a stellar effort. But in the cold light of day, it seems likely we'll be top again after first week post break (so long as we take care of our own business) and, if so, fully in control of our own destiny. Given we've been robbed of 5.points by var and the # of high profileminjuries, that's actually an astoundingly positive position 2 b in.

Huge for us to not lose, obviously would have loved to get that stonewall mma kick to the chest and win at the death. However we have by far the easiest 10 games left we are tied at the top and arsenal have to travel to City in 2 weeks you’d fancy city at home or a draw. Our toughest game is on the road at old trafford and spurs at home I believe. Salah yet to get back fully from injury and should be getting alisson and Trent back soon tbh that point is massive as we stay ahead of city. I’d say 8 wins 2 draws rest of the way should be enough to lift the trophy and we are certainly capable hopefully our injury crisis doesn’t get any worse and we have a great chance

Thanks for your output. As a Liverpool fan I don't consider this result as the reason we will loose the championship. It's this result, plus the Tottenham result and the Arsenal result. That's a possible 5 points we lost due to VAR not working. Also that's also a point less for 115 and Arsenal. I understand the two penalties might have been missed, unlikely yet I'll concede it, but the goal that was scored was scored.
A goal that was so onside you could see it from space with a basic telescope. On that basis if you just give us that one point it could be the difference between everything and nothing. If you give us the five points I think the league is over.
I know people will talk about the Forest decision but it's not the same thing as a penalty or a goal that was scored and 115 have a few other decisions go their way this season.
If we do loose I hope it's to Arsenal as they are not fundamentally corrupt as an organisation.
The fact that 115 are known as 115 for things dating bake years and nothing has happened makes me think a bigger inquiry is needed into the whole system. I'm starting to wonder if the have bought the whole shebang.
I understand that sounds unhinged and it's not something I feel comfortable saying but when it starts to quack like a duck it just might be one. It's not like football is beyond corruption in fact it is steeped in it.
For all I know we could loose the next six games but that's not the point, I'm just sick of the perception of corruption.
If Liverpool win this league, with all the injuries and above mentioned, it will be against all odds and be the greatest win ever maybe apart from Leicester . That is unfortunately why I don't think it's going to happen.

Sometime in life, a disadvantage can become a strength if you get cornered.
And Klopp, Lijnders are brave & smart enough to face the challenge aka take the opportunity head on.
    Put it into a test.

It was a great tactical game to watch at the top level. Was amazing to see how City started the game and took it to Liverpool to answer. Slight change in tactics balanced the game for the first half beside the genius of Carlos Vicens creating the amazing play for corner kick & getting a lead. Come second half things were far different, Klopp half time talk worked again and it was a different Liverpool team to get things started. Amazing tactical changes along with freedom for players to play the game. Liverpool should have won the game beside Diaz forgot to wear his shooting boots. Let this title challenge go on and we are up for the best title race for a while.

Avout the title challenge as a Liverpool fan, I was a bit disappointed given how we played in the second half, but I really wish Jurgen wins the title in his last season. He truly deserves it.

I’d be interested in the tactics going on with Quansah and Van Dijk. They were continually swapping sides but it was difficult working out who was covering who. Also really impressive from both to be able to do so. Most central defenders can’t adjust so easily.

As a neutral, draw was a fair result. I hate the amount of extra time being awarded. In the slo mo Ball hits upper part of Macalisters' arm, then Doku hits ball first, the follow through is debatable.

A fantastic game, chock full of heart, through highs and lows. The ungiven penalty is insignificant to the display the lads put on for the fans. If the reds play like that through to the end of the season, they'll take home more silver. Game on! YNWA

As a Liverpool fan I feel it's 2 points dropped just because of how many chances we had to finish the game and didn't.
As for the penalty, I wish I could say it was unbelievable but it's not like it was even the only questionable VAR decision in the match given how similar City's goal was to the LFC goal disallowed in the cup final.
We could have finished it and didn't, but it absolutely will go down to more points lost due to incorrect VAR decisions which, with 10 games to go, would have added on at least another 5 points putting us clear of Arsenal. I think it's now very clear that referring decisions will be play a part in this race unfortunately.
As to how I'm feeling with the title race; ask that question again after City play Arsenal in a few weeks!

LFC fan - your vids this year have made me appreciate the genius of Klopp a whole lot more and possibly more worried about his impending departure? I think most Liverpool fans would have taken a point seeing the team sheet, so delighted with how it turned out and ultimately frustrated by VAR or lack of again! The title race comes down to who blinks first. Heart says Liverpool seal the fairytale. Head says City by a point AGAIN. Both sides are animals in this phase of the season. I've a feeling Arsenal will have the ultimate say either way.

This match enraged me so much. i simply cant find any joy from the performance. Once again 3 points denied to Liverpool by incompetent refereeing. I was onboard with VAR but after this match i simply cant see the point of it. Why does it even exist if the refs arent going to use the technology to make the correct call and instead use it to not contradict their mate on the pitch? Get rid of it. i find the mistakes by the onfield officials far more tolerable.

it’s crazy how the way they dealed with kdb was basically by not. A lot of teams since he’s come back have man marked him or something but then that just leaves more space for beranrdo and foden. They just kept their shape and blocked passing lanes to kdb

VVD is a man mountain, he single handedly kept us in the game in the first half. Klopp inevitably changed his tactics and after the first 20 minutes we settled in the game. Wataru Endo u r absolutely a monster. MacAllister is signing of the season alongside Rice. In the end what u said about Rodri's pre match talk sums up Klopp. U can have 100 million and 60 million players on the bench but u still ain't going to beat Klopp's Liverpool at Anfield even if he has a 16 year old player playing in this side, this is what TAA meant when he said this means more

I felt Darwin Nunez was great with him making those runs diverted attention from the defenders often and Diaz used those opportunities to try shots.
But Man Cify defense barring the disastrous pass from Ake which lead to Ederson's injury were good like Liverpool's attack and intensity was awesome and felt they did well against such a beast of a team.

Man City's forward line of past seasons, especially the 2018/2019 season is what they needed in this game. The trio of prime Sane, prime Sterling and prime Aguero was different sauce. Haaland can't really play that false 9 role and create numerical overloads in the centre like Aguero did. Don't get me wrong, Haaland is of course a beast of a finisher, but he simply cannot play that false 9 role the way the Pep system requires. It's why Pep switched his system to a back 3, and thus pushing one of the CB's (Stones) forward as a second cdm to create that numerical overload in the centre. In the past, Pep did this by having Aguero, Jesus, or other City midfielders like Gundogan play in that false 9 role. If you look closely at how City's false 9's operated in that Pep system in the past, it made it difficult for any team to dominate City. Now, with Haaland, playing a more traditional striker role, Pep has to compensate that by pushing one of his CBs into the Cdm role to create that numerical overload. Also, City need pace on the wings. The only quick wingers that City have at the moment is Doku and Foden and their pace doesn't come close to prime sane and sterling btw.. In the past seasons, Sterling and Sane caused havoc to most teams because of their pace. This meant that City could transition quickly and counter-attack at lightning's pace because of both Sane and Sterling. Now, it's different. To me, Pep's system operates at its devastating best when the false 9 system is used especially against big teams. Pep's teams are not designed to play quick transition games or end-to end football, rather, they are designed to play a controlled game where they control the tempo especially with the squad they have now.. In that match against Liverpool, City looked out of place and it's like they were not sure of what to do which is unlike Pep's teams.
