Ms Beautifull thank you sometimes I feel I can be overly redundant and I struggle with public speaking. But I'm constantly working on speaking more eloquently.
Great video! People definitely need to understand what products works for them and create a healthy regimen. I wash, deep condition, hot oil treatment with a retwist every 2 weeks. All the products I use are specifically made for natural hair care like Loc Nation and Black Earth by Taliah Waajid. My hair is healthy and currently past waist length 😉!
Gel! I learned my lesson. I will not be going back to the “loctician” who did my hair. It literally looked like snow was coming down my face. And my scalp was so dry, no matter what oil I used I still had the issue. I will be washing and retwisting my own next go round. Very informative video.
Yeah, I don't blame you I started locs my son's hair and mine as well I also maintain ours too, I can't mess with these so-called locticians. I've seen people get their locs done and it looks like a whole matted ass burr-patch on top of their heads.
Shana Medley right! And now that I won’t be stressing about it being super neat or having the parts perfect. I plan to just do it myself. Any products that you recommend?
My response is late but here goes....i am 3 years loc'd and i only use JoJoba oil (very very light) on my scalp and rose water when twisting two to three times a year. I do not put any products or oils on the length of my locs. When i feel the need to oil again i use a minute of the olive oil hair spray (green can) on my scalp. Massage that in and go. Washing? Diluted Terressentials Lemon mud wash. I use aloe vera juice (get the big jug from Walmart) to dilute the mud. I start at the scalp, dip my locs in the mix as much as i can and then move to the length. Wash twice and let wash 2 sit for 30 mins or so and rinse clean. No problem rinsing the mix out. 👍 I agree with less is more. No buildup, no lint, fresh locs and thick edges. #lowmaintenance 👏🙌👍
I'm 11 years into my loc journey and I must say you telling the truth. Especially about conditioners and oh my God edge control is awful. When you go to a hair stylist you must tell them what not to put on your hair.
Very informative... My 11 year old wants locs so we've been growing his hair out. For part of his Christmas gifts I was bringing him to a salon that specializes in locs. This helped alot because I totally thought using gel was fine.. Thank you
I used most of the products that you spoke about when I had locks and I can definitely agree that I had terrible buildup as a result. My locks ended up being super heavy and I think that was because of the build up. And regardless of how many apple cider vinegar cleanses I did I could not get it out. When I cut my locks off you could just see years of lint and waxy buildup in them! I think if I had been more knowledgeable I would’ve never used Murray’s beeswax in my hair.
I use hair grease. If you want you can watch my livestream of my loc Retwist services I show the service from beginning to end so you can see the full process
I'm so glad you posted this because I was about to use style n jam for my next retwist because I'm all out of aloe vera gel. You saved me and my starter locs!! lol #3months
this was so useful! thank you what a thorough and educated video. I did my first starter locs yesterday and after intense research I did a hot oil treatment, deep condition and then starter locs using only rose water oil and minimal gel so I feel reassured!
I just start my loc journey and have watched sooooo many videos and I have just decided to use water and oil at all times but at moderation to control itching and buildup. Thanks a bunch for this video🤗
Nik Fab the truth of it all is that these products people use don't really make your retwist last longer. Natural hair has a natural memory to it when you set damp hair and allow it to set and dry. All of those products just coat the strands which usually leads to gunk, flakes, buildup and stiff locs. I always recommend that everyone experiment with retwisting with just water and oil. After doing this for about 3 or 4 months, you will be able to determine whether you truly need something more to help with retwisting your hair but in most cases oil is really all you need to properly maintain locs.
1st of all, your hair is beautiful- shout out to the stylist. I stood and clapped when you spoke of gels. My hair starts to act up in two days when I use gel. Good video for the loc wearers, I love the work you showed in the video.
Mr Lee You don’t want a gel that is full of alcohol. It will flake your hair and it makes your hair so dry. You can train your hair to use oil and water just for the retwist.
Not trying to discredit you King but the picture with the red starter locs, the clips on the roots are a no no. It can cause breakage. Use a little tension with lower clip placement coming from a 10 year licensed loctician. Peace and love brother good review
How exactly do temporarily placing clips cause breakage? Unless I'm literally ripping thru hair sliding clips in there's no breakage occurring during that process. No disrespect but it doesn't take 10 years experience to know that. Also,She wasn't getting a retwist. She was getting starter locs in a resistant texture that required clips to give more distinction and hold at the roots while her hair set in coils.
@@AfrikanHairGod you can still get the same result that you need placing the clips in a brick lay, retwist or no retwist. Great informative video I’ve stopped using product to retwist and recently stopped using wash out conditioners in my Locs. I used to use that exact one by Cantu. Not anymore. 🙅🏾♀️🚫
I have started my locs for the third time. I used eco gel. Bad decision. My scalp is dry n itchy..my hair is really soft n coming untwisted..yes ..I need to know what I can use. Cause they say dont use products..there is loc n twist products
JUST started the journey a few weeks ago and I'm willing to learn as its very new to ke and I'm experimenting a little to see what may and may not work for me. I've heard multiple things on both sides in regards to gel and I know for me I want mine to be healthy as possible as I can make it. I tried Jamaican Mango and Lime gel and it seems to have worked well enough but I'm also nervous that it could present problems in the future since it's all new to me.
Just pay attention to how you hair is responding to what you do and use in it. I urge you to watch my loc Q&A videos as well as watch me Retwist using hair grease
one more thing to add I try aloe vera plant it had my hair dry I also try flax seed putting it to soak then use the gel from it. was the worst my hair hold good but after two days it start to flake an look nasty very nasty
Hey 🤗 I havent come across you since I saw you in Toni's video!!! I have watched her videos since 2009 and the time you cut her hair was a big turning point in her journey in my opinion. Its been flourishing ever since 🖤 #locnation
When I first got my hair relaxed in 1967, the only way to style it was to wet set it. At home I would do this and let it dry all day. (Not many at home dryers like in the salon back then) That meant going about my day with rollers in my hair and a scarf to cover them. The result was beautiful, but so time consuming. When blow dryers came on the scene, that sped things up a bit, but the question now was how to get the curl. I used to braid my hair into 6 sections and roll up on sponge rollers. I used the blow dryer to dry as much as possible before going to sleep. In the morning, I had nice waves and curls to which I applied some Alberto V05 to get shine and keep the frizz down. Slowly, heat appliances began to appear that would replace those old press and curl combs and irons. At first, I was told that use of these was a no no on relaxed hair. But, as years passed, oils and sprays were introduced to coat relaxed hair to be able to use heat at low temperatures. I tried this, and wow, how fast it was to do my own hair. I used pressing oil with my curling iron to make the curls. All was good until I went to a salon and discovered that they commonly used high heat to dry and straighten with flat irons. I was impressed with how straight my hair was and that the process was so fast. I was working then, so I could afford to go regularly. Some months later I began to not like the feel of my hair and the rough ends. My friends told me that they were doing their own hair now. I took matters into my own hands and researched the issues. With a good pair of shears I trimmed away the rough and split ends, chose new shampoo and deep conditioning products and got my hair back on track. Now that I'm retired, I'm back to the roller and braid set, no heat other than under a bonnet dryer. I guess that I have come full circle. Life is good!
Great video. I started my locs just over a year ago now and don't use any products for retwisting. On my very first retwist I used aloe vera gel. I may have ised too much but that took forever to get out that I stopped using products altogether! I just oil my scalp after wash day
I prefer water and oil for retwists but find I have reversion really fast (i use palm rolling for my locs). i try not to retwist too often but have you found a sweet spot for loc maintenances when you are minimal with products? Thanks
Are your locs mature? I find with starter locs oil n water doesn't cut it. Hair gets messy real quick. If your locs are mature, how long does your ReTwist last with oil n water 🙂 ???? Mine gets messy day later... By a week it's s hot mess 🤦🏽♀️
@@Mars-op9km they were immature at the time but I still get at least 2 -3weeks though before the fuzzies. I like messy hair as long as my parts are clear
I don't have locs but I don't use rinse out conditioners either. I buy shampoo and deep conditioners. I dc every time I poo which is once a week. My hair laughs at rinse out conditioners & I've even heard a "bitch please" coming from my hair whenever I've used them.
I hate that they use the name "Jamaican" on these products in the States. I am a Jamaican, we don't use these messes in our hair. Jamaicans do not lock their hair with a bunch of products.
My husband and I both have locs and he dry scalp and I mean bad dry scalp. We both flake bad in the locs. I’m trying to switch to butters. I bought Alikay loc butter. So I hope that helps
My son's locs are mature and his hair is thick. He plays sports and works out so anything gel based is not an option. I interlock most of his new growth and palm roll it at the roots with wax. It seems to be the only thing that keeps it looking nice. I use a clarifying shampoo but he does have some buildup. Do you have any product suggestions?
You should allow his hair to swell and frizz. It's what the hair is intended to do. You have already interlocked so there's no need to add more product. It's actually bad to use heavy product with interlocking. Cut back on the products and put his hair in styles like two strand twists. That way he can wash his hair after a week or two and still be able to release them for a clean, fresh, crinkled look. All of that product will weigh his locs down and create more issues than it helps.

So I know you said use a good clarifying shampoo from time to time but when you shampoo other times do you suggest a good moisturizing shampoo since conditioner is a no no? I’m just doing some research before I start my locs or sister locs. I’m just lost and confused 🤷🏾♀️
Have you tried Trader Joe’s tea tree tingle products ? It’s a tea tree CLARIFYING shampoo and the conditioner is very light on the hair and very moisturizing.
livelife prettyy I retwist with Trader Joe’s Aloe Vera gel! I also use it on the shaft of the lock esp during the summer as I’m in water (river, lake, oceans) every day! 20 years now
My mom use the mango Jamaican twist wax and it works for her hair but it leaves it dry. My brother use it but his hair thrives. My mom only wash her hair like 4 times a month and she dont have much build up but we are trying to find her good oil for her fine hair. Also her dreads are colored red and she does 3-4 month retouch.
The color could be the culprit in her dryness. The wax wouldn't help that issue but would only make her hair more drier. She should also try to cut back on the washing to maybe 2x a month.
AfrikanHairGod she used joies natural gel. But my scalp is always like this even with braids. Crazy I have seabreeze and peppermint oil I may mix peppermint oil with vitamin e.
I mix tea tree oil and aloe vera gel with a tiny bit of pure castor oil in a spray bottle and after a wash, i spray my scalp and massage it in before retwisting. It has helped so much with dryness.
I’ve had my locks over ten years . I wash them every other week and I do use a rinse out conditioner it’s works really well for me : I’ve never ever had crazy amounts of build up n what not. What I do use to remove whatever build up I get is apple cider rinse ! This works . I use mango and lime products and I’ve never had an issue w them . Why all the pins though ? Whenever I retwist I never use pins. I guess different stuff for different hair types .
What type of oil can I use on the hair and you never did what’s an alternate gel you can use . Did you also say do not use Conditioner ? . What can I use for moisture ?
Hello this is my first time watching your video and you seem so articulate and I feel I can trust you. I NEED HELP SO BAD. I’m about 6 months in and I’m getting frustrated. I can do a retwist and the next day it look like I did it weeks prior. My hair absorbs EVERYTHING and is extremely dry. I’m at my whits end, but do not want to give up. So any advice on what I can use and how often would be greatly appreciated😀
Creams have more propensity to reside in the locs because they have a harder time rinsing out. If you are going to use a leave in you should only need to use a light liquid spray.
I’m going to be starting my loc journey soon .Now as far as moisturizing the locs... if I choose a cream leave in would it b better if I just put some in a water bottle and spray it on my hair rather than just rubbing the cream on my locs . I wanna avoid as much mistakes and build up as possible. Thank you in advance ❤️
Thesweetest Badu you don't need to use any creams at all. You don't approach locs the same way you do your loose natural hair. Let your hair be. You can use a light spray leave in but no creams, custards, gels, setting lotions, etc.

My hair was dry because I was using dr bronners, and the Cantu shampoo left residue on my hair too finally I found a decent shampoo too
Shonta' Sweetie I haven’t used conditioner for years. Don’t think I ever will, again. Hot oil treatments work just fine for me.
Shonta' Sweetie which cleansing & moisturizing shampoos do you use?
Which shampoo do you use?
I re-started mine yesterday with got 2 be glue because it was all i had around the house strong enough to keep my hair from unraveling...smh. But i won’t re-use it for my retwist in the future. ONE AND DONE! Thanks for all the info🤗
astoldby lana I just purchased this product because my hair unravels the same day I do them. So I was trying to find a product to tame my hair. What did this product do to your hair that I shouldn’t use it
Crystal Thomas it is heavy and causes build up. It’s almost impossible to wash out because it’s water proof. At least the one i used.
Beautiful work, these pictures in the beginning are fabulous 😍
sunsetnwaves thank you!
I don't have locs. But I started locs on my nephew, and I'm lost on what to use to retwist his hair. But your video was very helpful. Love how you talk and explained everything. TFS 💜
Krissy GourjussTv I just use water and oil or hair grease and never have any issues.
AfrikanHairGod thanks and will try it tomorrow on his head. 💜
This was EXTREMELY helpful! Thanks for posting!
Very informative... Wished I lived in Atlanta, because I would trust you to start and maintain my locs.
Thanks for the video. Very informative as usual. You are just awesome!
You Kept My Natural Loose Hair Flourishing And I Love This Video 💚
I love Cantu makes the hair smell good
Great informative video I’ve stopped using product to retwist and recently stopped using wash out conditioners in my Locs. I used to use that exact one by Cantu. Not anymore. 🙅🏾♀️🚫
Love the video even though I don't have locs. 100% rely on Narada for an informative video
A very honest and informative young man.thank you!👍
I have started my locs for the third time.
Cheryl Davis I enjoyed your story!
Cheryl Davis
i mix rose water, aloe vera gel (natural) and glycerine
I just found ur video I'm trying to learn how to retwist my son's hair and I need to know what's a good product to use
You can see how I used to do my Loc Retwist here th-cam.com/video/andBPU005pM/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I started my locs just over a year ago now and don't use any products for retwisting. On my very first retwist I used aloe vera gel. I may have ised too much but that took forever to get out that I stopped using products altogether! I just oil my scalp after wash day
Lilmissfreens LOCBeautiesUK so what product you use for retwist in’s ?
The Whoever 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Exactly lol but the ppl saying coconut oil dont realize thats WAAAY too light for 4c locs with a dryyyy scalp😂😂
You only poo once a week? See a doctor
😆😆
Omgoodness! Preach honey! You are amazing. I've had to fight to get rinse out conditioner out of my locs!😥
I appreciate your humility 😊
Blessings 🙏🏾
Whew child that pin placement at 0:45 is immaculate 💕😢
Thank you for this worth of knowledge.
Awesome video! Super informative and thorough with great explanations! Keep up the awesome content!
What do you think about Taliah Waajiid products?
I was thinking the same thing
Your work looks nice. I just started my second set of locs.
I hate that they use the name "Jamaican" on these products in the States. I am a Jamaican, we don't use these messes in our hair. Jamaicans do not lock their hair with a bunch of products.
How about shine n jam magic fingers for braiders, is that advisable?
My husband and I both have locs and he dry scalp and I mean bad dry scalp. We both flake bad in the locs. I’m trying to switch to butters. I bought Alikay loc butter. So I hope that helps
Dang I just went to Walmart and bought the Jamaican mango stuff!
Great video☺ I use water and oil for my kids when I retwist their hair.
It's All Okay With CJ!! Do they stay in place after they dry? I will be retwisting my girls starter locs aug 15 and i dont want to use products
Quanisha Williams I do it and it stays well I would even say better than gel based on my results
I retwist my husband's locs with castor oil mixed with tea tree oil and water.
Quanisha Williams yes ma'am. I started out with using gel and that caused build up, so I stick with water and oil and it stays in place.
Live,Love ,Eat I agree.
I've watched and recieved lots of great info from your channel. Was so surprised I hadn't already subscribed....so sorry. Now subscribed!
And... Your hair is luscious!❤❤❤❤

Jessica Dillard Taliah Waajid Black Earth Shampoo is my favorite.
Have you tried Trader Joe’s tea tree tingle products ? It’s a tea tree CLARIFYING shampoo and the conditioner is very light on the hair and very moisturizing.
livelife prettyy
I retwist with Trader Joe’s Aloe Vera gel!
I've been loc'd for 6mths and always referring to this vid...thank you😍
What can I use to retwist?!? And also in between washed how can I moisture my scalp and have a little dandruff
Recommend gels to use please for starter locs
Helping out my brother with his locs. This is very insightful and straight to the point, thank you❤️
I started my journey yesterday. What can I do both the itches. Omg I'm patting my hair like a weave.
NaturelDeese shampoo with a sulate buildup braker shampoo basically
What did you use to start your locs. that's probably why your scalp is itching so badly.
AfrikanHairGod she used joies natural gel. But my scalp is always like this even with braids. Crazy I have seabreeze and peppermint oil I may mix peppermint oil with vitamin e.
Tea tree oil helps with itching of the scalp very well
I mix tea tree oil and aloe vera gel with a tiny bit of pure castor oil in a spray bottle and after a wash, i spray my scalp and massage it in before retwisting. It has helped so much with dryness.
Can you please update us on your sister's hair?
A little over 2 months into my journey. This video is very informative and encouraging. Subscribed instantly (and I never do that). Thank you🙏
What about ORS lock and twist gel purple lid🤔
I’ve had my locks over ten years . I wash them every other week and I do use a rinse out conditioner it’s works really well for me : I’ve never ever had crazy amounts of build up n what not. What I do use to remove whatever build up I get is apple cider rinse ! This works . I use mango and lime products and I’ve never had an issue w them . Why all the pins though ? Whenever I retwist I never use pins. I guess different stuff for different hair types .
Cut open one of your locs and look @ what is inside. You'd be surprised.
Have anyone used joie gel for retwist?
LEAVE IN CONDTIONERS STAYS IN YOUR HAIR AND CAN BUILD UP ALSO??????
Creams have more propensity to reside in the locs because they have a harder time rinsing out. If you are going to use a leave in you should only need to use a light liquid spray.
Great post! Very informative and helpful!
If I havr my locs super dry what can I do then? What products can I use ?
I’m going to be starting my loc journey soon .Now as far as moisturizing the locs... if I choose a cream leave in would it b better if I just put some in a water bottle and spray it on my hair rather than just rubbing the cream on my locs . I wanna avoid as much mistakes and build up as possible. Thank you in advance ❤️
Thesweetest Badu you don't need to use any creams at all. You don't approach locs the same way you do your loose natural hair. Let your hair be. You can use a light spray leave in but no creams, custards, gels, setting lotions, etc.
AfrikanHairGod ok thank you so much
You look so adorable with your locks I love them🥰👏👏👏🙏
