This video wasn't created for people to judge the client. Stop. Keep the negative and "funny" comments to yourself. This was meant to educate people. Who cares if she let 30 years pass before coming to this hair doctor?!? You don't know people's situation. My sisters hair became very damaged. Why? She neglected it due to depression. Shit happens. I don't know this clients situation and don't care to comment about it. Thanks for the video and sharing the information. I'm going to begin growing locs. This will help.
If you started growing your locks I'll give you some good advice (besides the advice in this video). Dont fight your locks. Have patience, your locks will lock and grow the way they want and there isnt much you can do about it so let them do what they want. You can seperate if they start matting together but dont fight anything else they do. Stay natural and dont use shampoo and conditioner. I use 1 cup of bakinsoda in 2 liters of water to wash my locks once a week. Wwhen they get a little dry i use 1 cup of apple cider vinigar in 1 liter of water to lightly condition my locks. My hair has never been healthier and ive never been happier. Have fun and enjoy the process. It will take time and patience.
I seriously respect the young woman's bravery and vulnerability for allowing you to document this.Im sure it was emotionally hard for her to do this,it's like standing naked in a room full of strangers.Respect from a fellow locksmith @duoflowerchild on instagram.
I am only 7 months loc’d, but I have noticed the changes in my hair with me not retwisting every month. My hair is getting thicker! I think it’s hard for some black people to understand that our hair doesn’t need all of that! Our ancestors were not using all of the crap that we are using in our hair today, and their hair was LONG. I only use oils and water in my hair.
Kinky, curly hair textures have a matte finish. Such hair does not have the “shine” associated with straighter hair textures. Most people with kinky curly textures seem obsessed with trying to get their hair “shiny.” They also seem to want it to lay down and be smoother. I saw Diana Ross’ daughter, Traci Ross talking about her hair products. She said “embrace the frizz.” SHE IS RIGHT. Those with kinky curly textures must eventually accept their own natural hair and see it as beautiful. The Scriptures state that Christ had hair like wool. (Revelation 1:14) We wouldn’t think that wool should be straight and shiny. Or that Christ needed the right hairdresser and products. No !!! We want wool to be soft and fuzzy. Same is true of cotton. Silk we expect to be shiny and smooth. Different textures, right? Stop letting other cultures and advertising dictate what your hair should look like. Kinky curly hair has its own appearance which is just fine. Work with that texture and stop being vulnerable to makers of products trying to seduce you into an “acceptable” look. Otherwise your hair will fall out. Or you’ll want to cut it off or cover it with wigs/weaves out of despair.
What a beautiful natural hair color! Now that all the buildup is gone it can finally be shown in all its glory. I'm so happy for your client. I could just feel the happiness and relief *radiating* off her at the end. Her edges are definitely on their way as well. Good for her!
Ms. Yannie you are a true queen. The way you kept your clients dignity and built her up despite her disposition, shows you are a class act. Her whole countenance changed after she seen the positive end result. You're very informative yet kind in your teaching of locs. I also say shame on these product companies and TH-cam tutorial people who profit off of selling products people really don't need to do and maintain locs. Blessings to you.
Yannie the Locologist LOVE THE WORK YOU DO!!! I have locs and have had them for a year. I have an issue with my scalp drying, but I don't want to use a TON of oils, as I am trying to move over to a more growing process. Any suggestions as far as hot oil treatment, conditioner, etc?
Exceptional video. Much blessing to you for saving the young lady's Locs despite a situation that seemed as bleak is it seemed; most would have advised her to cut it off and start over. My 'douglah boi' Locs are about 4 months in and I use gel, however, I usually end up washing it out within two days because it itches no matter what gel I use. The few times I left my hair alone (without product) it doesn't itch one bit; even when I sweat excessively. With that I am going to try using only the oils as prescribed, which I started today with Coconut and Ylang Ylang hot oil blend....interlocking too. I will report back after some time. Blessings.

+Marcus B I've learned to accept that there are people on this earth single purpose is to throw shade one way or the other. unfortunately social media is a breeding ground for such people. This was one of the reasons I had no desire to be on social media. i was content to keeping my knowledge to myself. My clients were the one that talked me into it. These people negative comments has absolutely no effect on me. THEY DON'T KNOW ME. There rhetoric also has no effect on my life, it doesn't pay my bills, nothing. Apparently they have nothing better to do with their time so let them continue to do what they are good at which is talk shit and throw shade. I on the other hand will continue to what I'm good at. Life goes. To they other people that sees the good in me and what I do, I truly appreciate their love and support. I'm humbled and honored by that. Hotep
People need to understand that TH-cam is not cosmetology school! That is years and years of so much build up from not properly cleaning her locs! Clarify clarify clarify!
I feel like you all are forgetting that a lot of us growing up went to hair dressers (the experts) on a regular basis. We went and our hair fell out time after time. The natural hair movement in part started before social media got big when we got sick of being told how to care for our hair and it not working. So we had a natural distrust of the experts telling us what to do because they hadn’t done right by us while still taking our money. So then social media came around and while yeah... some influencers are recklessly telling people to try this and that but others are actual licensed stylists. It’s ziti easy to look at the damage on her hair and judge what she should or shouldn’t have done. But had you been with her you probably would have told her to try different products or stylists too and a lot depends on your income... what you can afford and how much else is going on in your life. The natural hair movement promises ease and freedom but it hasn’t been that way for everyone.
Thank you for educating the Loc Community. You did an amazing job on this young lady's hair. You have shown me the way... NO MORE PRODUCTS IN MY HAIR...EVER!
I keep telling my friends this who are new to locs. I only use shampoo and olive oil on my scalp and leave my locs alone. I don't use conditioner either. When I retwist I only use water. I've been loc'd for 4 years now. When I need a deep clean (2 times a yr) I use a apple cider shampoo and boil some water to penetrate the locs. Just don't over do it with the styles, washing and retwists.
The "after" is just beautiful. You can tell how much lighter (in weight) her hair is now. Wow, what a difference. Thank goodness she found help before cutting it off.
I only use Jojo oil. I have done so for the past 10 years. I wash her every 3 months with natural products. Do not complicate a natural process - Well said.
Definitely would love to see an update somewhere of her! I could only imagine how much her hair has grown. The ending was beautiful so I'm sure they look amazing today.
Omg there was so many diffrent products in this ladys hair that her hair even looked a different color! Watching these this is so enlightening! Beautiful and makeing these paople not only happy! But looking good & feeling good so awesome! By the way your really the queen! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
People! u do not I repeat do not need to get retwists every two weeks. It thins the hair. I jus started my loc journey but that is one of the first things I learned. I want healthy full locs not thin noodles on my head. Water is your Bestfriend and all of those loc gels and beeswax is bullshit. Water water water, and a good shampoo 😉
Wow. Your hands are blessed!!! I just started my loc journey after 8 years of being a loose natural. I love my locs so far and I want to take care of them the right way!! Thank you for teaching me. May God touch her scalp and bring forth life.
I just got started locs, I am learning alot with this video... i wont be putting things in my locs before or after my hair starts to loc... thank you so very much Yanni!!! I'll just trust the process
that is the prettiest nude nails I've ever seen . so seamless . I struggle to find the perfect nude . I'm more of a medium/dark bronze skin type . do I match it to my skin color or the palm side ? lol way off topic I know 😂
I know it sounds strange but dawn dishwashing liquid works amazingly for this. I had a similar problem personally and I used dawn because that is what is used to clean animals after oil spills. And their skin is much more sensitive than humans. Now don't do this everyday, but it works very well. And you do beautiful work. Such caring and healing hands.
Osito Kintsugi i would suggest staying away from using wax, not being water soluble, it’s usually harder to wash out of the locs & causes build up. The first year of my locs I did retwist with a cream, I noticed that caused slight build up over time so I switched to gel, which was better but not perfect. Recently, 3 months or so ago I decided I didn’t want to put any products in my locs at all because at the end of the day, they all cause some sort of build up. I switched over to doing my retwists with some Black castor oil with lavender & hot water. I’m about 2 years and 3 months into my loc journey & my hair is doing pretty well of not collecting much build up. You being in the early loc stage I would suggest maybe gel because locs are still usually pretty loose . The more your hair starts to mature, the tighter & stronger your locs will become. Everyone’s hair takes products differently. I’d say just try out what you feel is best for your hair and your preference. You’ll get to learn which methods you like more
I am a newly loc'd lady. I do use leave in conditioner. But, I wash frequently. People do get locs and let go. They use product after product and then wash monthly, IF THAT! Makes no sense to me. Then, go to a salon to get, "snatched". Unfortunately, that's in a literal sense. They get their edges pulled out. I am happy you were able to help this young lady. I can hear her gratitude! This message is a response to Yanni . This is a very brave young lady. I respect her and feel her pain. I do not want to disrespect anyone .
I’m so glad I watched these videos before loc’ing my hair. Thank you!! In the beginning, I would only shampoo and put light oils with rosewater on my locs very sparingly. But now I just shampoo and that’s it. Haven’t put oils on my locs for over 2 years now and they are healthier than ever.
I have never heard about putting products in locs honestly.. you're supposed to treat your scalp rather than the locs themselves. A light oil after washing them would keep them shiny and smooth and it washes out nicely.
I've stopped putting any priduct in my hair some time ago. I use oil only to moisturize before a retwist and pin down to hold. Also got away from those tight to the root twists. My hair has grown more and is healthier than it was when I was using products in the start of my journey.
My mother has beautiful locs she's almost 60, she does not put anything on them and they are so healthy looking. I'm starting my locs journey this year because of her.
That stuff isn't growing back. She is giving that lady false hope. The only way she will ever have normal, healthy hair there again is if she gets a transplant. She might get a few strands of baby hair, but that is about it.
not trying to be an ass but some of that is ACTUALLY dirt that has had a chance to build up too. Mostly products usage but there is definitely dirt from not washing the dreads all the way down. Some folks scrub the scab good to have it clean but forgot to go back and forth on each individual dread. Not being mean just stating my opinion.
Some people just don't know. And as the locologist said, people watch these videos thinking the person knows what they're doing and has the right knowledge for whatever the subject is and then you try it yourself..and when something goes wrong we automatically think it's because of something else. Then you have 50 people's opinion about that and you try out what they tell you to do because you want so desperately to fix the problem..
Alot of you are obsessed by your hair, you are not freed by it' Yannie the locologist Locs represent freedom, the rastafarian culture was a form of freedom. Yannie
I would image if she were to cut her locs to shoulder length, it would take off weight or decrease the pulling down effect, and maybe stop the traction baldness from progressing
I just fell in love with you and your craft. I was ready to cry for this Queen in the beginning of this video. I was thinking she would just have to cut it off. You are truly gifted. It always touches me to see stylist or hair care providers who truly care about the health of their clients' hair. I hope you are also able to aid this Queen in growing back the hair she has lost to traction alopecia. You are truly a blessing.
Ain't it just like humans to complicate a natural hairstyle....like com'n to Jesus, so simple but humans gotta make it difficult! Keep get'n ur message out there... May ur hands & life continue to be blessed ...
The best hairstylists tell you the truth. Before I had locs I remember my stylist fussing at me about my dead ends and showing me the breakage and evenness. This type of care is what we need. Thanks for telling the truth about product usage. I needed to be affirmed by a healthy loctician that I don't need all that mess.
I've been growing my locs for over 20 years now and in just two videos and reading your website I gained so much knowledge! I started using black gel and then I heard that it breaks your hair (which it did). I was told that it was the alchohol so I started using gel without. I now have alopecia on the top of my head and edges. When I was a beauty culture student many moons ago, one of my teachers told me that if your scalp is as smooth as a baby's behind, the hair will not grow back. I am currently using a oil based natural product and within weeks I am seeing peach fuzz! I have been praying about my hair growing but not being proactive in the process. I wash my body with Castile liquid pepmint soap and now I will wash my hair with it. I will also add lemon dishwashing soap to my regimen. Thank you!! I also stopped oiling my scalp years ago when somehow the "Black" community was told to stop "greasing" our scalp because it block our pores.😏 I hope to become your client one day!!
I've seen alot of people asking what to use for retwists instead. Just to share my experience. I had locs twice and pulled them out the last time because I did watch alot of videos at that time that advocated for using eco styler gel. Please don't use that as it is so heavy and I found it impossible to get out of my locs. What worked better for a retwist as I learned is just a little light oil and a little bit of honey on mildly damp roots. It sounds odd but it does give the hold and nutrition the hair needs. The mixture is easily dissolvable and washes away as it is natural. It should not be mixed thickly just more like a light syrup consistency. Others say they use natural aloe gel as it's water-based. I haven't used it to know. Some other people have said just a little oil on damp roots also works fine. I also have used a loose two point interlock method to tighten the roots and that worked well too. Good luck everyone.
yes!!! i never use products in my hair. locs are natural, our hair doesn't need all this stuff. and the product companies don't want us to know that. so they tell us we need all these things in our hair and we're dirty without them. i don't use anything else but coconut oil in my hair and it's going along just fine. if the earth didn't make it, you sure as hell don't need it! i hope her hair gets better ☹️
rummagingchaos Even I dont have locs but a natural fro, I never put all those products in my hair. Just a natural shampoo, conditioner, and sometimes tiny bit of olive oil. Of course there are deep treatment like acv rinses and oils to add to shampoos like tea tree or pepperment, however I dont like all that products such as curl enhancers, mist frizz control and etc.
She did amazing work. I'm not a locologist by any means but I'm a seasoned hairstylist and what we saw was years of (good, bad, and ugly ) hair products that have crystallized in the hair.
I do my hair every 3 months, wash it every month, I do use leave in conditioner and oil base only in my hair. I'm looking at this video and cant believe the state she got her hair into, that looks like fifteen years of not washing, I'm sorry to say. Well done on the transformation👏👏👏👏
You and all who help really are amazing at what you do !!! So glad you online teaching need more people like you to educate on things insted of trying to sell products much love to you ! ❤
You are truly a blessing. This young lady locs are beautiful. You worked a Miracle on her hair thank Goodness you have the knowledge and proper product to remove all that product build up. I'm thinking about starting my loc journey. So watching your videos are helping me learn about how to treat my locs once I get them. I'm in Los Angeles California and I have a long time friend who does locs. But I want to learn from you what to do and what not to do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I have Sisterlocks. My consultant previously advised that I deep condition my locs, but I recently noticed build-up in my locs. I remembered this video and decided to stop deep-conditioning the locs and adding hydrating lotions, etc. I just shampoo and spray my locs with water every few days.
aaww that is amazing that you were able to get it so she didnt end up having to cut her hair. I hope that her traction alopacia can get better now too, because I can only imagine how hard that would be to deal with.
Most High I pray healing over this sista hair. Queen Yannie may The Most High continue to work through your hands. The color if her hair is gorgeous like it was kissed by the sun 🌞.
Wow what a transformation !!! Her hair is so beautiful and now is even starting to come back a little since you got the buildup out. You are an amazing woman!!!
Wow Yannie amazing work!!! The before and after are like two different set of locks. Thanks to you and your client for sharing! Just let your crowns be Kings and Queens.
I have no idea how I got here, but Yannie you did something amazing for this person. That surely brought back a lot of confidence to this person! Her hair looks great!
I used a gel for the 1st time recently because I decided to permanently switch from interlocking to retwisting and figured if I used it very lightly I could get a better hold with less chance of buildup. NEVER AGAIN! One single minimal use and my hair was attracting lint and buildup like crazy. I'm going to stick to good old oil and water and hope I can get the buildup out over the next couple of months. The only bright side is its a small patch on some of my locs and not on the full length of my hair.
I had to stop listening to beauty health gurus. They were ruining my face and hair. I've started following actual professionals such as yourself and dermatologists. I'm glad I found this video. I'm starting my loc journey and I'm trying to learn everything I can to make sure they stay healthy and growing before I commit. I'm happy I found your channel and look forward to more of your wisdom! Her locs are absolutely glowing now.
I am so grateful thatI came across your channel. I love how she didn't have to cut her beautiful hair and that she still have vibrant follicles in the alopecia areas.God bless you!

Everyone’s hair takes products differently. I’d say just try out what you feel is best for your hair and your preference. You’ll get to learn which methods you like more
Osito Kintsugi water is all u need hair will lock naturally
Osito Kintsugi damp your hair with cool water daily never use hot it seperates the hair.
The way you said, “straighten your neck” reminded me of my mom. I had to rewind. Amazing work, you are a blessing.
Amazing... You have healing hands. Can see the sister was overwhelmed with joy and confidence i would of been too. Looking forward to an update.
Thank you sistren
I’m so glad I watched these videos before loc’ing my hair. Thank you!!
In the beginning, I would only shampoo and put light oils with rosewater on my locs very sparingly. But now I just shampoo and that’s it. Haven’t put oils on my locs for over 2 years now and they are healthier than ever.
I have never heard about putting products in locs honestly.. you're supposed to treat your scalp rather than the locs themselves. A light oil after washing them would keep them shiny and smooth and it washes out nicely.
Can we see another follow up on this client? This was so satisfying and educational. Thank you.
I've stopped putting any priduct in my hair some time ago. I use oil only to moisturize before a retwist and pin down to hold. Also got away from those tight to the root twists. My hair has grown more and is healthier than it was when I was using products in the start of my journey.
Thank God you found eachother! 🙏🏾 bless her and her journey & your gifted self as Well. Magical!
My mother has beautiful locs she's almost 60, she does not put anything on them and they are so healthy looking. I'm starting my locs journey this year because of her.
Does anyone else love the locologist's voice?
I'm glad you were able to save her hair, the change was dramatic and her natural golden hue is stunning
Please update about her edges. Inquiring minds want to know Thanks
That stuff isn't growing back. She is giving that lady false hope. The only way she will ever have normal, healthy hair there again is if she gets a transplant. She might get a few strands of baby hair, but that is about it.
LOOOL
I had alopecia twice in life...it can come back for sure
@@justclas3255 My daughter was just diagnosed with alopecia last Thursday. She has long thick beautiful hair. I pray her hair grows back.
@@tammywalden8410 sending love and light you'll way!!!
not trying to be an ass but some of that is ACTUALLY dirt that has had a chance to build up too. Mostly products usage but there is definitely dirt from not washing the dreads all the way down. Some folks scrub the scab good to have it clean but forgot to go back and forth on each individual dread. Not being mean just stating my opinion.
All that product buildup attracts dirt, even if she was washing the whole loc, that dust and dirt's stuck.
Agreed 💯 percent...hell she ain't washing at all
Some people just don't know.
Again, stop judging. This is meant to help and not judge. Everyone has had hair mistakes.
Great job, her hair is Beautiful! And she was patient!! I would've definitely cut some of it. It's really long too! My goodness!
Have you posted an update on this client? I would love to see her hair today.
Alot of you are obsessed by your hair, you are not freed by it' Yannie the locologist
Locs represent freedom, the rastafarian culture was a form of freedom. Yannie
You are correct! We sell anything to each other with no regard. Very little education etc. Whatever makes money is what we care about.
I needed to be affirmed by a healthy loctician that I don't need all that mess.
you are so gracious, and I want to thank the client for allowing such transparency
WOWOWOWOWOW her hair is beautiful! such a nice color that's the kind of color that only comes from sun-bleaching with time oh my god so pretty
This stylist did a professional caring job.
Her hair came out beautifully!!
Wow!!!! Her really hair color is blonde! 😮 all the buildup has turned it black. Great job!!!
Thank you!!
I also stopped oiling my scalp years ago when somehow the "Black" community was told to stop "greasing" our scalp because it block our pores.😏
I hope to become your client one day!!
Ty fr restoring her beautiful locs man.. you deserve your flowers
yes!!! i never use products in my hair. locs are natural, our hair doesn't need all this stuff. and the product companies don't want us to know that. so they tell us we need all these things in our hair and we're dirty without them. i don't use anything else but coconut oil in my hair and it's going along just fine. if the earth didn't make it, you sure as hell don't need it! i hope her hair gets better ☹️
rummagingchaos Even I dont have locs but a natural fro, I never put all those products in my hair. Just a natural shampoo, conditioner, and sometimes tiny bit of olive oil. Of course there are deep treatment like acv rinses and oils to add to shampoos like tea tree or pepperment, however I dont like all that products such as curl enhancers, mist frizz control and etc.
rummagingchaos what do you use to wash the hair?
hinnomtx17 coconut oil 😊
rummagingchaos Girlllll....who is you telling!? Amennnn!!!!
rummagingchaos I agree with you 100%.
I love how you brought those locs back to life. I am looking forward to an update video.
Thank you!!! Looks so much better! I stopped all products on my natural hair because they were making my hair fall out! Bless you!
This is phenomenal! My jaw literally dropped when I saw the results of the hard work and effort you put into this!
She owe you $3,000 😂 You did an amazing job.
Who is still watching in 2020 during this quarantine?
She did amazing work. I'm not a locologist by any means but I'm a seasoned hairstylist and what we saw was years of (good, bad, and ugly ) hair products that have crystallized in the hair.
I really want her to do my hair one day i love how she respect her clients what a miracle worker
I don't have locs but I love watching your work and passion Yannie
Excellent video queen! Thank you for sharing knowledge with us!
Queen Yannie...
Did her hair grow back? I would love to see her update video!!
aaww that is amazing that you were able to get it so she didnt end up having to cut her hair. I hope that her traction alopacia can get better now too, because I can only imagine how hard that would be to deal with.
Most High I pray healing over this sista hair. Queen Yannie may The Most High continue to work through your hands. The color if her hair is gorgeous like it was kissed by the sun 🌞.
You have performed a miracle. Her crown is beautiful!
It must feel light as a feather. I believe in speaking things into existence. We must be careful of our thoughts and words. Myself included.
You hit it right on the head. Keep up with your locs is so simple but people over complicate it ...
Wowwww her hair looks like a brand new set of locs!!! 😮😮
The before and after is amazing.
Wow what a transformation !!! Her hair is so beautiful and now is even starting to come back a little since you got the buildup out. You are an amazing woman!!!
Just found your videos, and I can't stop watching. Yannie you are a loc genius....wow
Wow Yannie amazing work!!! The before and after are like two different set of locks. Thanks to you and your client for sharing! Just let your crowns be Kings and Queens.
Thank you sistren
Yannie the Locologist so how do you clean the locs?
I usually retwist my locs with aloe vera juice or something natural.
Is there an update I really wanna see how her hair is doing?
I have no idea how I got here, but Yannie you did something amazing for this person. That surely brought back a lot of confidence to this person! Her hair looks great!
You’re heaven sent thank you for the job you do and the knowledge you provide. Much Blessings Queen.
I LOVE your nails Yannie! What color and brand of polish is that. WOW Flawless
Oh my gosh! Her hair looks SO much better afterwards! It's 2019, has her hair come back? I hope so!
BlueMenpachi2 alopecia normally permanently damages the hair follicles and it’s not common for hair to bounce back from that.
