Outdoor Lighting a Tennis Court Photoshoot | One Godox Light Photography Setups

  • We're doing a photo shoot at a local tennis court in the summer. I bought a cheap tennis racket and some tennis balls, and we chose to do our photoshoot in the late afternoon so the sun is a bit lower and we get some nice sidelight from the almost setting sun. I'm using an AD400 pro with an octabox for this entire photoshoot.
    In this video I’m showing you how to light a tennis photoshoot with a single Godox AD400 Pro and an Octabox, balancing the sun, with flashes. These technics can also work using any kind of studio strobe, or speed light to balance the ambient light.
    The equipment used in my videos is a mixture of Godox, Neewer, and Flashpoint.
    Main Filming gear:
    Sony a6400 - amzn.to/3qwCtNz
    Atomos Ninja Inferno - amzn.to/3mtfz1L
    Rode NTG4+ - amzn.to/3sa5KOl
    Zoom H6 - amzn.to/47yPc2U

    Great shots and great lighting! Of course, the model is fire!!! Just a though, next time use a better quality racquet, a $30 junior racquet cheapens the shot in my opinion. Unless of course it's an ad for that particular racquet.

    • @austinlindsay

      Thank you! But, It was an $11 racket which already took us over our $0 budget. 😆

      The racket does not to take away from how well the shots are lit and how good the model is. Outstanding shoot.

    nice stuff Austin. Beautiful light on her! Just out of curiosity, did you ever try to augment the sunlight, but placing the main light on the same side of the sun, and get a bit of wrap around on her? Although I do find the results pleasing with seeing the main on her shadow side , stopped down just to add fill , as you mentioned.

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a bunch man! When I shoot outdoors with the sun, I generally try and use it as a rim light. Although I call the sun a key light, I think in reality I’m most often using it as a rim light.
      You could definitely augment the sunlight, but like to use it more like a secondary light source.
      It really comes down to what look you enjoy in your images. :)

    • @toddy129
      @toddy129 ปีที่แล้ว

      @austinlindsay I used to shoot sun as natural rim all the time but I've started augmented the motivational light source recently so it's more subtle.
      But you're using the octos subtly , so it's not distracting, nice job !

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I try and balance it well. But, I should branch out and try using the light on the sun’s side just to see how I like it. Do you have any examples you’ve done with the light on the sun side? I’d love to see them.

    • @toddy129
      @toddy129 ปีที่แล้ว

      @austinlindsay I just recently started this approach with portraits but nothing for fashion or sports publicity yet. I shoot a runner next week and I'll show you something, if we decide to go this route based on weather . Augment the direction of the motivating light source, and then maybe a bounce on the shadow side ?? Who knows, just a thought, but your tennis stuff here is subtle, and the rules don't always have to apply I gusss :)

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s cool. If it goes down it would be interesting to see. And, yea rules are always meant to be broken. Haha

    Thanks for sharing Austin. Sorry I have to ask, what size and make is that Octabox and do you like it for light quality/ruggedness for outdoor work?

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll post a link to what I have. It’s roughly 42 inches. I absolutely love the light quality from this one because of the textured reflective interior. It’s fairly durable as well.

      @@austinlindsay thank you, always great to see content creators interacting. Appreciate your response. I'll probably be looking at the CheetahStand version instead since I'm in the USA. I'm finding the Godox/Glow substitutes not as durable and I've seen a number of users complaining about them falling apart in a year or so. I don't mind a little extra weight with softboxes/octaboxes if it means I'll have a longer life with the modifier.

    Currently I have a 48inch soft box, with a Godox V860ii flash. Could I recreate the light in this scenario with this flash, or is it not strong enough?

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I think you’ll have a very difficult time replicating this setup with a speed light. You need a lot of power to compete with the sun while shooting trough a softbox.

    What's the tip I need to know about shooting on location? Who do I need to ask permission for say a tennis court?

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a public tennis court. So, we didn’t need permission. It could be similar for your area. But, you can always check out your city’s parks and recreation website to see what the rules are for the specific location you are wanting to shoot at.

    My intention is not to offend, but absolutely not, the little clothing that the model is wearing and some of those poses seem in very bad taste to me, in a swimming pool it would not have been so out of place, but on a tennis court with a bikini and a pink sweater on the shoulders, it seems ridiculous to me, the child's racket is also out of place, the light a little underexposed but they don't seem like bad images to me, a good idea poorly executed.

    • @austinlindsay
      @austinlindsay  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This video isn’t about what to wear in what scenario, it’s meant to teach people how to light. And we just so happen to be sooting, poses, and outfits that we like to do so. You don’t have to like it, but if you’re going to comment at least teach me something factual. All I learned here was what your opinion is of this video, and that is of little use to me in my daily life. I don’t mean to offend either, but just wanted you to know my honest unfiltered thoughts to reading who’s. Cheers.
