To add some more information about the Jacobite succession after the death of Cardinal Stuart, it is ironically Franz, Duke of Bavaria who is the current Jacobite claimant. The duke is the first openly gay European nobleman, and unlike his forebears his younger brother Max has progeny. The claim will pass into the House of Liechtenstein upon the deaths of Franz, Max, and the latter's daughter Sophie, who married Alois, the Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein. Their eldest son Joseph is the first Jacobite claimant since James Stuart to be born in the UK. As Dr. Kat rightly points out, no one in the Jacobite succession in a few hundred years has made any serious effort at claiming the British throne, and Franz has even said he doesn't even want it. I think we can close this chapter of history.

Yes but there's also one other little tidbit that many people don't know about and it is very rarely if ever spoken about. And that is just before the Battle of Culloden there was also a much much smaller Skirmish called The Battle of little fairy I believe if I'm not mistaken the Battle of Little Ferry took place in the days just prior to the Culloden Massacre.
My ancestor, Oliver O'Gara from Sligo, Ireland was a prominent Jacobite, fighting at the Battle of Aughrim and, later, was influential at the court in exile at St Germain in France. 👑👑👑
As an American, I find myself exasperated by all the decades/centuries of wrangling over the religion of the ruler of Great Britain! We have had our wrangling too. I remember that my history classes taught me that the prejudice here against catholics was still so pervasive that there were those who thought JFK would be the pawn of the pope and shouldn’t be elected president. These days, the sovereign is whoever parliament says it is. There are laws, to be sure, and other laws would need to be passed if the crown were to be bestowed on anyone but the sovereign's direct heir. But times have changed; the crown isn't won by combat anymore.

I could see some major political problems with James III’s French influence. Louis XIV was an infamous absolutist after all, and I could see James having problems with parliament because of that. One of the supporters and financiers of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 expedition to Scotland was Antoine Walsh an Irish exile in France. Walsh made a fortune through buying salt beef in Cork and shipping it via Lorient (Brittany) to Saint Domingue (now Haiti). The salt bèefwas used to feed the slaves there. Walsh supplied ships and funds to Prince Charles Edwars Stuart. Ironically, Ireland remained at peace during the '45.'

I have a question if anyone is interested in answering. We just got back from visiting several cities in in Europe, our last being Passau, Germany. We took a tour and our guide, whose first language was not English, spoke the word Protestants with the O as like ‘go’ (can’t write it off my IPhone) like protest-ant. Which made me wonder - is our current emphasis on the word Protestant wrong? How was it spoke originally? Just found it interesting!
I think Britain dodged a bullet. While some power had already transferred from Queen Anne to parliament, far more power left the monarchy when a non English speaking king sat on the throne. The Stuart males had a penchant for the divine right theory. With the Hanoverian dynasty, Britain gradually became the great democracy it is today. That also likely saved the monarchy from a fate similar to the French King.

Its not hard to see how the Jaccobites would have 100%, genuinely belived they were the rightfull rulers. However royalty rules at the pleasure of the people and the Jacobites did not please . Also, given that it was 3 or 4 Generations (depending on how you count) of Jacobites, it not hard to see how royalty usually unalived or imprisoned any competition. I actually don't know what the majority of my Scottish ancestors felt about the subject and who they were loyal to. But there were some who were fighting for James VII & II. One was a Jacobite was surnamed MacPherson. He was captured at Preston in 1715, shipped to Liverpool, and then exiled to South Carolina in 1716. I've enjoyed researching and imagining his life story. He ended up making a nice life for himself!
Worth noting that George 1 at least spoke only German, and could not be bothered to learn English. This is one of the reasons why I sympathize with the Jacobites.

However, aside from the fact that there are supposedly people that could claim the Jacobite throne if you will. I don't even understand how there are so called descendants of the Jacobite movement or cause for there to even BE claimants to the throne? I'm confused.
IF, we are to take as fact that at the time of the Culloden battle that all of the fighters (all of which were male) were murdered on the field upon which they lay..... then that would mean effectively that an entire generation was wiped out in a single day......
