    I completely forgot to mention P.T. in this video! Probably the most notable example of this type of thing happening. May make another video about it down the line!

    This definitely puts an idea in my mind I had not considered... which is the expiration of the server support... This is the real threat to losing all of our Pokemon in the years to come, and to also prevent us from moving older mons up for those who wait too long.

    • @WhoAskedYou
      @WhoAskedYou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely! It's the unfortunate reality of all server based media and a lot of people don't think about it long term. It's unfortunate, especially in instances where new titles barely get a chance and shut down after the first few years. Thanks for watching!

    underrated channel. this is something that also makes me really sad, i wish there was a more physical way (aside from methods involving save editing or homebrew) and preserve online-based software in general. you should honestly have more than 226 subs, nice job!

      Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
      And yeah, it's really a shame. I'm thrilled they did end up putting the Sword and Shield expansions on a cartridge. Really great for future proofing.

    6:05 well actually for software that isn't fully on the disc like PS4 games and so on they can actually take away still your ability to download the rest of the files whenever they feel like it even if it's physical, only retro stuff applies for this instance since new games are prone to issues digital-license style.

    Upsets me none of the Pokemon games are ever unified. Bank and home are just methods to dump Pokemon into the latest game. Real unification would allow any Pokemon to move to and from any game in any order. As a developer I can assure you this would be stupid easy. It would even encourage sales on older games as well as their cloud based service so I fail to see why they continue this crap.

    • @WhoAskedYou
      @WhoAskedYou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wholeheartedly agree. They used to. Gen 4/5 and HGSS were able to migrate from the GameBoy Advance games with proper, offline integration and it's a shame they don't do that anymore. Part of it most likely comes down to the lack of ability to have two cartridges in one system at once, but they could always offer an offline connection system like trading. It's a shame that don't do it anymore!

    • @junehanabi1756
      @junehanabi1756 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@WhoAskedYou Yes, basically the trading system is a disaster. I thought bank would fix it as it's most praised feature was the unification of all the games going back to gen 1. But, nope, bank made things much worse and enforced skipping generations for no reason Red could only be sent to sun/moon no love for x&y I guess. Home also skips generations, no love for let's go.
      Offline trading is a gone, funny thing, online trading (especially in swsh is somewhat of a joke). Also from a developer standpoint there's literally no need for home, what's wrong with bank on the switch. The definition of a cloud service is different platforms connecting to the same online service and data.
      Honestly, as a developer, I could and have thought about making an offline bank alternative that freely moves Pokemon around to and from any game keeping them non-trade Pokemon and even offering to bank your players money and items as you move around the large Pokemon world. I could even go as far as to create hardware to work with physical game cartridges or perhaps unify physical cartridges and emulators.
      But... Lawsuits, not interested in crossing that bridge. Point is if I can do it, there's no reason they can't and it's a wonderful money opportunity.

    I think that by the time Home ends there will be another service where Pokémon can be stored. The big issue now is if and when Pokémon Bank will end, because when it does, every Pokémon between Ruby and Sapphire and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will no longer be transferrable to Home.
    I hope Bank will become a free service then, not depending on the Internet. I'll even pay for it if I have too.

    Love that the Pokémon Sw/Sh dlc is getting released on a cartridge! Really hope it’s not false advertising and something’s missing or needs a download, or has a huge bug that gets patched immediately 😬, but from the sounds of it it’s exactly what I was hoping for, minus a cheaper price, man that’s expensive.
    Also, you mentioned Pokémon home going offline eventually, but not Pokémon bank. Does Pokémon bank work offline to transfer Pokémon? I assumed it would be shutting down in a few years and that would be when the ability to transfer Pokémon pre-gen vi disappears.

    • @WhoAskedYou
      @WhoAskedYou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bank will eventually have the same issue, unfortunately. Generations 1-2 and 3-5 can transfer offline, internally, but 6 will be locked to itself, as will 7 onward.

    I still have many legendary and level100 Pokémon from 2006-2018 in all old Pokémon games because I rarely transfered trained Pokémon into the next generation (The mindset is that If I keep them in their original games, I could always transfer them to the new games if I really needed them, but I can't transfer them back, so I only transfer old Pokémon if its really an unavoidable necessity, which is rarely the case). But if Bank decides to shut down completly, I will transfer my whole collection of Level 100s and legendary Pokémon that is scatered between all generations into Home.

      Bank is going free-to-use once the eShop shuts down, but that means that its shutdown may be happening after that. 5 bucks a year for Bank may have been annoying, but it at least provided _some_ income to offset the costs of renting/maintaining the servers to hold Pokémon on. Once it's free, it's essentially a money sink for GF/Nintendo, so it'll be one of the first things to go when it comes to retiring services.

  • @tonkuriihq8133
    @tonkuriihq8133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm concerned that when bank inevitably fully shuts down years from now there will be a cut off after gen 5 where people can no longer get their pokemon out. I really hope they can just make a completely universal service for at least gen 4/5 and up, this is why the idea of offline communications being removed is so concerning
    At this point I'm not a huge fan of the switch era's direction, so I might just keep all my old pokemon in moon bc I don't like the idea of keeping them on an online server that could get shut down, or a switch save file that would be completely lost just from a tiny fragile SD card getting damaged. But then the moon cartridge could malfunction in the years to come so who knows. I still have pokemon I spent so much effort to get, as well as my now deceased father's old pokemon from when I would get him to play with me as a child. Especially the 2 infernapes, that were both our first ever pokemon, if those 2 got deleted id probably cry fr. I just don't really know if moon or home is safer tbh

    Thank goodness we have talented hackers in the community willing to revive dead services, or provide alternatives. The DS and Wii's still kicking about thanks to RiiConnect24 and Wiimmfi. PKSM is a 3DS Homebrew that is more or less Pokemon Bank on your SD Card, with some save altering tools if you wanna go that way.
    Kinda sad we have to go to legally questionable means to preserve these things.

    • @WhoAskedYou
      @WhoAskedYou  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The service is free to use until they inevitably shut down the Pokémon Bank servers. There won't truly be a migration tool from the DS era onward unless they create and release some sort of offline based utility, which is unlikely at this point. The removed service cost is a great start, but it doesn't solve the issue long term.
