    Seeing the AB+ clearly marked on your first SOT kayak, the evolution to constant rescue practice on every trip was foreseeable 😄

      Haha, you have a sharp eye! Well noticed! We left the old videos on our channel, although quality isn't that good. So others can see where we started, as complete beginners!😊🌊👍

    Glad you left the videos up. Quite inspirational too that you went from novice to what appears to be instructor and more and even crossing the North sea 😳😎.

      A few years ago we considered removing all old, non-HD videos.... But because of feedback like yours, we didn't and we are glad for it. Happy paddling !👌😊

    Very enjoyable!
    Who makes those sit on top kayaks? Mine is 13.5' made by Perception. I added thigh straps so that I can push against them for stability...as you would in a closed or traditional kayak... very stable in ocean waves!
    Be well and safe!

      Hi Frank, This one is a DAG Midway (it's a French brand - sister company to RTM - Rotomoulded). It has a patented system (between the legs) that keeps you in control of the kayak. You don't need straps on this one. Also very stable, but like most sin on top kayaks it has very little rocker. Cheers, Dimitri! :-)

      @frankzima7998 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Dimitri! Yes...interesting concept...might be more "solid" than my thigh straps. The DAG Midway sounds good...a little narrower than my boat...probably a little faster too. I fish out of mine, but use it mostly for 2-14 mile tours on big lakes, big rivers, and inshore ocean/bay areas.
      Safe paddling...
      Frank

    Hey Dimitri, so glad you posted even your old videos. Great to see the progression in skills and equipment throughout the years. I wanted to pick up a RTM Midway to dip my feet into sea kayaking till I build up more skills. This boat seems to bridge the gap between the SOT and SINK, not many around like this model from my research.
    I live in a location that has a winter season. How wet is the seat pan in the DAG Midway, I am expecting it to be a wetter ride but does the seat and foot wells drain sufficiently. How does the boat track in the wind and waves, since you never had a rudder on it from all the videos I watched. Happy paddling. -AJ

      @Northseakayak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi AJ! Thanks for your message! Yes, we want people to see that sea kayaking is not rocket science. We started from nothing, and not many people know this but the reason why I started this adventure on my own (only supported by my wife back in the days) is that I was mistreated in the local kayak club. I had never been in a kayak before and was asking for information and help, they just mocked with me and said that nobody here (in Belgium) was kayaking on open water. That said, I have learned everything I know myself, mostly by trail and error. Best school ever! :-D Just don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with taking classes. Now, the boat! The Midway gives a wet ride, the console inbetween your legs makes you in control. When there comes water in the cockpit due to a breaking wave it's empty within seconds. During winter time it's not so comfy (unless you wear a drysuit). There is not so much rocker on this boat and it's manageble in windy and choppy conditions. You will enjoy this one for sure! Make sure to buy the seat with it (sometimes it comes optional). It provides isolation to your bum. :-) Happy paddling! Dimitri

      @@Northseakayak I can totally relate my friend, years back I tried to dip my feet into a different hobby-remote control composite sailplanes. I was fascinated by high performance composite remote control sailplanes/gliders. It can be an expensive hobby due to the hand made nature of these composite planes. Through online search I found a club in the neighboring state and I drove out on a weekend when they were flying to introduce myself and gather knowledge before I made any big money mistakes. These old guys were so un-helpful, you would think I was a cold war spy trying to steal military intelligence. Suffice to say I turned to TH-cam to de-mystify the black art of composite sailplanes as well as a couple of instruction DVD's and I was off to the races.I bought a used carbon fiber sailplane to practice many of the techniques and handy work.
      The learning curve is greater but there is a self-satisfaction attribute that cannot be denied. Sea kayaking is the same for me, I would rather learn a lot of the basics myself and then pay for classes to teach me the advanced stuff. Plus, with TH-cam videos like your's I can get a head start on some of the advanced stuff so when I do take classes I can get more out of it. Thank you for the insignt into the RTM midway, I will be picking one up as soon as I can, not easy to find a dealer in the US. Thank you for the knowledge, and safe adventures.

      Hi there, those are sit-on-top sea kayaks (polyethylene) from the French brand DAG. The type is Midway. We started sea kayaking with those for the first 5 years before switching to standard sea kayaks with a closed cockpit. Cheers 😊👌👍

      Yes, Some people have already advised me to erase those older videos, due to the fact that we were not trained as we are now and the poor video quality. I refused as we wanted to show other paddlers that you can do everything if you have the will to get there. We're just average, normal people who have started just like everyone, from the bottom. Nice to see that someone is looking to our older vids! Cheers, Dimitri

    • @Bhamlunker
      @Bhamlunker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I understand why people are concerned....although I am not yet trained myself. If the only people that every become properly trained right "out of the gate", then few would I suspect have ever started. You were more bold than I am I suspect....I have a desire to get "offshore" in the coming year or two, but wont do it I suspect until I figure out some of the safety training....there is also more danger in sitting around doing nothing...far more dight of heart disease than a kayaking accident (although I know that is a bad comparison). Who would have thought we would be having a philosophical discussion on a very old YT video hahaha, take care!...oh and LEAVE the videos!

      Don't be scared or concerned about achieving things with your sea kayak, just take precautions and paddle in a safe and responsable way. Take one step at a time, pushing your own limits. In our team we have four important rules that we always keep in mind. It aplies both to the novice as to the more experienced paddler.1. Always wear a PFD.2. Adapt your clothing to the water temperature (not only the air temperature)3. Test all of your equipment on a regular base in the water.4. Imagine the worst thing that could happen, and prepare yourself to those situations.It's a pleasure talking to you, I wish you all the best, have fun on the water and paddle safe! You can also find us on Facebook. All the best! Dimitri

      Thanks. It's odd but I actually have a tub just like one of these but they come much smaller. I think they were originally made to be totally smell, water-proof etc. The smaller ones I have are actually designed for something called ball milling which is when you finely powder something by tumbling it over and over with lead balls inside and whatever it is you want to turn into a very fine powder. A bit like polishing stones.
      I've just never seen one that big!

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, that's new to me too, never heard of this. Anyway, it's a very good storage for us. Even if you lose it (happened once) from your kayak, it still floats and you can recover it without any problems. Cheers, Dimitri

    Does that console not hinder self rescues? It appears to make getting back in the seat impossible.

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all, but it is adjustable... and you can even remove the whole thing. Wouldn't reccommend that last, because you get a really good body/boat connection. It is the only sit-on-top that has this feature. All others use knee straps.

    How much weight can the Midway handle? I weigh around 105 kg and would take about 15-25 kg fishing tackle and other stuff with me. DAG website says 250 kg but it seems to be a bit much for this kayak.

    Hey. I admire your channel. I am asking for advice. I want to know if RTM / DAG Midway is suitable for a man of 180 cm tall and about 95-100 kg of weight?

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jan, thank you for watching! The Midway can handle a side range of different paddlers. I believe it will work out fine for you. If you have the version with the console (black thing in between the legs), you will have more control over your kayak. This is rather unique on a sot-kayak, and it's adjustable. Cheers! Dimitri

      @@Northseakayak Thanks for the answer. Until now, in SOT kayak, I used thigh belts. I see that Midway has a different stability solution. I hope it is OK for large lakes and coastal waters to the Baltic Sea.
