I was torn between both models for 12 months and ended up getting the m550. 100% the best choice for anyone not driving on the autobahn everyday. Great review
Naw.. ive owned one for about 8 months now. And my girl has the 530. The 530 is wayyyyy more comfortable to drive than my m550. The 530 feels more floaty, the m550 feels more planted on the road. And its not a close comparison lol i promise. It is a closer comparison to the m5 tho but ive only drove the new m5 for like 20 mins.
You just helped me make up my mind M550i with a jb4 piggyback tune and downpipes and I will have a very comfortable yet VERY fast Luxury sedan. Thank you for putting this out there
I’m 36, love sports car feel and I love power. I chose the M550 over the M5 because I’m not a track driver. Exactly for the reason you said.. sometimes I just want that comfort. Perfect jackyl and Hyde car

Great topic, as always the answer is.....it depends. Driving an X7 M50i (N63) now, cannot imagine needing more power if having that same engine in the 5 series. But the M5 is well.....an M5. Also - love you channel name.

FWIW, I'm not a racer, but I've probably got more high speed experience than 99% of the drivers out there, including owning Vette, Trans Am, SRT, (and driving my uncle's Carrera GT) six years of autobahn cruising, autocross, drag strip and LV motor speedway (in a NASCAR). Unless you plan to track your car regularly, don't waste tens of thousands of $$$ on an M5. I bought my M550i just a few days ago and it's fabulous enough for all but the true trackers.
Ultimately the choice is down to whether the car is your daily driver or your weekend toy. I ordered an M550 back in February '21 (still hasn't arrived at the dealer) but have now told the dealer I don't want it due to being held in a lot for "rework" for 3 months so I've now ordered a '22 M5 Competition. I sold my fun car, Jaguar XFR-S, back in May because the M550 I originally ordered was to be built in June and arrive a few weeks later (haha!). I was torn for so long between the two, but months and months of waiting gave me time to reflect on how I would use the car. In 3.5 years of having the Jag, I put 21k miles on it. Ultimately, the car is my toy to cruise around in for a few hours on the weekend, embarrass Mustang and Camaro guys at a stop light, and then go home before it rains. I totally agree, if you're buying the car as your daily commuter, get the M550.
i went m550i 2 years ago. got a 2020 with the tu3n63. about 35k cheaper than a similar spec'd m5. mine was fully loaded with every single option. 2000 for down pipe dme unlock tune and it beat a stage 1 m5 on the highway. and with xdelete I can make it rwd just like the m5 for when you want some donuts. the m550i really is a gem. also with Xdelete on my 500i it lets you keep the traction control on
I was cross shopping the E53AMG against the vehicle I now own the powerful M550i. I am coming out of an f10 550i, and wanted a change. However, after driving both vehicles I quickly realized the E53 is NOT a comparison to the M550i. I chose with my pocket, and went with a 2021 LCI M550i in Tanzanite Blue with Blk Nappa. I live in NYC, and cannot in good faith daily the M5.
@@blazinmark1 totally agree. In my full review of the car I even said that the M550i is currently unchallenged by traditional rivals. The AUDI S6 doesn't exist in some markets and if it does, it uses much less powerful V6. The same goes for the E53. It has an in-line six but it can't match the speed and feeling the V8 of the M550i offers.

I'm also looking for an everyday driver with interior refinement that rides relatively more comfortably but with the party trick sitting under the hood when I need to pass or have the burst of exhilaration and sound. Plus, I'd never consider tracking the vehicle so I'm sold on the M550i. At around 4:00 and 6:40, you highlight the beauty of its suspension. Have you ever driven a model with dynamic handling package? It boasts anti-roll stabilization, so would it reduce body roll levels closer to (even if not matching) the M5? In other words, what would I get for the $3.6k that isn't already there in this beautiful suspension? Great vid again and I'm subscribed!
The Dynamic Handling Package will bring it closer to the M5 but it will not match its poise on the road. The M5 has a lot more going for it in this department, different bushings, a different way they are hooked on to the car and many, many others. The Dynamic Handling Package only brings a different set of dampers and lower springs so it won't make such a huge difference. If you won't ever go to the track, don't bother with the M5.

Just my opinion, BMW is diluting the M brand with all the M marketing such as M550 which, is nothing but a regular 550i that includes the M sport package and XDrive. When I had my M550i I used to get questioned if my car was a "M" and I would say no. I call a spade a spade; I am not one who debadges their cars and add M all over them.

Wee need to be honest the m5 comp is the better performamce car with less comfort, its faster louder, angrier better to drive better to look at, the turning point is the price the Bmw M550i xdrive is 40000 euros cheaper than a similary build bmw M5 comp and thata a lot of money.
Having had both the M550i and the M5 competition, the M5 is just better in every way. The ride is a little firmer in the M5, but not so much that it is a problem. The trade off is you get massively better handling characteristics, better acceleration, and less depreciation. Plus, with the M5 you get a car that is part of a legendary history, with instant enthusiast cred. Most of the videos on this topic push the M550i and all say things like “it’s all you would ever need” or “it’s cheaper”, or “you can tune it so it’s basically an M5”. Sometimes though, you just want the real deal and not the “almost” version. You don’t want to have to explain why it’s not really an M5 or give a dissertation on why your car is nearly as good and how you’re such a savvy car shopper. Again, I’ve had both, If you are on the fence, and you are an enthusiast of any sort, my advice is to grab a low mileage F90 M5 now, as the values are only going to increase now that the 5500 lb hybrid monstrosity new car was just released.

Ended up getting m550 as a daily and i love it!! Got both resonator deleted. Getting it chipped soon so it’s basically a m5 lol

I drove the m550i and it felt slow and like a boat. The turbo lag was noticeable. The m240i on the other hand is a quick.
