Very interesting although it's hard to know just how far to take "tuning". Now you could put pure ceramic ABEC9 in spool and there's a company modifying the outboard end of drive shafts to include a ball bearing there as well. It makes you think that people entering casting competitions totally removing the level wind system and the centrifugal brake entirely. Good video that allows you to see what's possible.

I really want to watch you breakdown this reel, but I kept just breaking down, thinking about the way my hamster just kept rolling around in that damn wheel in his cage. I mean, it was my favorite one and you would think that he would just get the hell off of it but no, he kept running and running until the wheel spun faster than his tiny little legs could go and when I came in the room at 7 years old, all I saw was him flopping around and around and around and around. Damn, well you get the picture, he couldn’t get off and your music took me back to that exact moment in time when my sister and I held a funeral service and dropped Mr. Whiskers in the toilet. I wish it ended their, not your music, the story. We flushed the toilet, we both cried, left the bathroom. Later-on that evening we here a bunch of screaming and it’s my older sister who had just come home from school and she dropped a load in the toilet, flushed, the toilet backed up so she plunged it and along with her goodies came Mr.whiskers, still dead as door nail but that was funny as hell. Your music inspired me to call my sister. Thanks for the video buddy🎣
Cool Video. The soundtrack is very cool. I just got my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6600C4 The day before yesterdy. I got it for Pike and Musky fishing. I will wait a bit to supertune it and when I do I will watch this video frame by frame. I am very good at taking things apart but not as good putting them back together. As it is still winter where I am and the ice is 2 feet thick I will have to wait a bit to use my new reel. Thank you for the video and may you catch all the fishies.
Make sure you take plenty of photos or videos while taking it apart. That's how I ended up with many videos :) Upgrading makes the reel very smooth retrieving. Worth having a go.
dDerDol Man I am trying to get upgraded parts like exactly on your video , can you help me get in touch with whos sells them please.....336-681-1966 thanks
Chris B.MASTER If you search 'abu cog' from ebay usa fishing site you will see a few bearing supported cogs. Likewise search 'abu worm' for worm gear. You can get carbon drag washers from smoothdrag.com. Hybrid (orange seal) bearings from www.bocabearings.com. the site has good searching facility. For handle, I bought a generic power handle from ebay. and replaced the knob with a power knob - also from ebay.
dDerDol Man what exactly needs to be replaced so it will just keep on spinning like it did when you was finished, this reel is a brand new 6600 c4 with clicker
Chris B.MASTER If you want your reel's spool to keep on turning you will need a pair of good quality ceramic hybrid ball bearing in size 4x10x4 - 4mm hole, 10mm outside dia and 4mm thick. This bearing will fit all Abu round baitcast reels. When you buy the bearings, make sure you buy LD (lube dry). Before you install these bearings, you need to remove the seals (orange sealed) of the bearing using a sharp hook. If you have compressed can air, blow inside of the bearing to remove trapped small particles. Replace the bearings as sown here. The dry bearing will spin longer but be warned that this will be noisy. In addition to bearing replacement, many people file the spool shaft and other contacting parts using very fine grid paper to minimise contact friction. Good luck. Let me know how you go.
Hello as I see that you know this model enough you could explain that the knob is on the side of the handle and does the one next to the handle (the star)
I have an abu garcia ambassadeur 6000,I noticed you have a 4 breaking system on that reel, mine only has 2,however when i pull them out to engage them the side plate will not fit back on, so i have to run them in,any help or ideas on what i am doing wrong thank you?
Tim Booker You have to push back a bit (without locking back) to fit the side plate. Generally, the pins will come out more than the diameter of the friction rim on the side plate - that's how they create friction when spool spins.
I've got them from a seller on that big auction site. His id starts Dad... or something. Sorry can't remember. Searching should come up. I thing about $30 for both.
Nice video, but the single bearing cog wheel isn't much of an upgrade over the factory cog. You can get a double bearing cog from Jerry Foran, hookless.com and it makes a huge difference. I run the double bearing cog in all of my C3 and C4 reels.
I have the same reel. got the bearings and the worm screw. I want to know where to get that power handle on e b a y. can you send me the link please????
The handle came in 2 parts: First is the handle, and is this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Baitcasting-Reel-Power-Aluminum-Handle-Abu-Garcia-C-Daiwa-Zillion-Revo-Steez-/221581797936?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item33974dea30 Second part is the knob and I bought from this shop: www.bluebottlefishing.com/products/r-series-red-small.html IIRC, the knob shaft of the handle is thicker than standard 4x7x2.5 bearings. I think it fits 5x8x2.5 bearings but not 100% sure. You should ask the sellers to ensure you get the perfect fitting knob.
I'd like to believe there is some improvement but I haven't physically measured. If there is, it could be a combination of spool bearings and cog/line winding bearings.
Nice video, I have been waiting to see a break down of my 5600, but this is basically the same. However though, where did you find the parts? I'd like to only upgrade the internals of my 5600 and keep the same handle. Though, I think the music is nice, but I would rather hear your voice in a nice step by step vid. Nice one though!
The handle shown is this one. www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Baitcasting-Reel-Power-Aluminum-Handle-Abu-Garcia-C-Daiwa-Zillion-Revo-Steez-/221581797936?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item33974dea30 I bought the knob from a local vendor but is similar to this one. If you kindly enough to share where you get the parts that will be a big compliment to your page but if you don’t say anything it’s just a simple video
If you look below comments there is a list of parts and their sellers. Unfortunately, this video was made 7 years ago. Not sure if those sellers are still selling. First stop check dadsoletackle. He has online shop.
The other question I have is if you do a complete upgrade including 1) spool bearings, 2) worm gear, 3) worm gear idler and 4) cogs, wouldn't that cost almost as much as the reel ? I was just looking at Boca Bearings' website and it cited a complete bearing upgrade for the 6500 costs $95.95. www.bocabearings.com/bearing-inventory/20361/fishing-reel-bearings/ceramic-orange-seal-abec-7/abu-garcia-6500-complete-baitcaster And as far as the worm gear is concerned, you can't just buy the bearings, do you need to swap out the entire part like this ? store.dadsoletackle.com/abu-garcia-ambassadeur/abu-garcia-6000-6500-6600-dual-bearing-carriage-screw-worm-gear-upgrade-kit-d-12
I think the complete set is waste. You only need good bearings on spool. There is no benefit using them on other parts. ABEC 3 stainless steel bearings are more than enough. No, I don't think you can just install bearings to the existing worm gear. I bought that worm gar set from DadsOleTackle. Cog from someone in GB. Handle from Korea, handle knob from Malaysia and Boca bearing from the USA. Bought them separably all over the word. Yes, it cost as much as the cost of the reel but I rackon the reel becomes twice as better.
dDerDol Man Wow, buying so many parts separately, wouldn't the shipping costs alone kill you ? So, in your opinion, would the Boca ceramics for the spool alone be good enough ? Will the cog, cog bearing, worm gear and worm gear bearing be absolutely necessary ? Everything adds up I guess. LOL.
I have upgraded many reels and in my opinion only spool bearing replacement makes difference in reel performance. And that's only if you use good quality bearings (preferable ceramic lube dry). Reel's stock bearings are quite good so you need better ones. Also, I don't believe ABEC 7 is required for fishing reels. ABEC 5 is way too good. As I said, upgrading reels cost more than the reel. I have upgraded 4600UC and sold it for the cost of the parts ...
dDerDol Man Phew, that makes more sense. Although I have to say since the Abus' levelwind actually moves when you cast, so I suppose it could affect the casting performance a little if you don't upgrade the worm gear. It was a bit simpler when I upgraded my Shimano Calcutta 251, all I did was pay $50 for 3 Orange Seals ABEC 7 ceramic ball bearings from Boca since the Shimano's levelwind doesn't move during casting. Thanks for the tip though, I guess I will just buy the spool bearings. I was looking at all the upgrade kits from Cast Away Tackle, they have different upgrade kits for everything. Even if I exclude the Carbontex drag washers kit, the cogs, spool and worm gear alone will add up to $83 which is quite a lot for a low cost reel in the first place. www.castawaytackleshop.com/Reel-Upgrades-s/1893.htm
Any additional bearing will make difference in performance - worm gear for example. But 'replacing' spool bearings (mind you Abu has good quality bearings) need to be 'a lot better' to feel the difference. I would suggest 2 spool bearings to lube dry ceramic bearing with seals removed, plus level wind worm gear will put your reel up there.
Amaleo Thanks. If you want those 2 spool bearings, you can get either a kit from www.ebay.com.au/itm/ABU-GARCIA-6600-C4AMBASSEDEUR-CUSTOM-OS-Bearings-/221413901075?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338d4c0313 or individually from Boca Bearings or any other 100 stores. Make sure you buy stainless steel bearings in 4x10x4 size. You need 2 of these. Bearings shown here are ceramic hybrid with their seal removed. Or you can get full upgrading kit - incl drag washers, spool bearings, LW, cog AND a E clip (need this for the cog) from Dadsoletackle at www.ebay.com.au/itm/171680668974?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
dDerDol Man Thanks a lot for your information! Apologies for the lack of knowledge, could you please tell me what difference will I notice by upgrading me C4 6601? I'm not a reel expert. Thanks!
Amaleo My upgraded reel is a lot smoother and feel more powerul than friend's stock reel. However, it's not going to make you catch more fish! He alway out fish me.
The stock handles have a lot of wiggle on the knob's, almost too much. Kinda makes the retrieve not as smooth feeling. I have the left hand and a right hand model . Both wiggle. The color sucks but I bet the reel feels way better with the power handle
Sorry buddy, that reel is going strong and never seems to dying after 15 years of use in saltwater. Change bearings every 10 years and should last ummmmm.. 50 years.
You must of went back in time cause the c4 6600 reel in this video came out in 2011... I think my problem is I spent $80 on a kit that might have been lesser quality bearings. I greased and oiled my bearings and cleaned the reel once a week. And been servicing my reels since 2009 I decided to try the super tuned bearings after seeing your video(Amazing video by the way), after about 2 months the bearing was leaking oil from the worm gear bearing and bearing holding worm on the opposite side.
@@reddragonmirage All my bearings are either ceramic hybrid balls in stainless steel casing that are running dry (no oil) or shielded stainless steel ball bearings. Any bearings that are exposed to environment, like in worm gear and handles should be steel shielded. These days, most mini bearings sold are made in China (including Boca bearings) and their quality control is below par I reckon. Some good some not so. You must have bad ones. Try replacing the bearings.
@@dderdolman5736 lol I replaced every bearing on my Abu for this season, all abec 7 bearings. I used a bunch of grease now not as smooth as yours but man its 10x better then stock. I hope it doesn't corrode.
@@reddragonmirage Abec7 is overkill for fishing reels but having higher abec your chance of getting higher quality increase. Yep I have used them before for that reason. I use ceramic hybrid bearings for speed (spool bearings) and shield bearing for other areas. I grease pack all shielded bearings so no water can get in. Last so long. Glad that your reel feels better.
Do you have a list of the parts you updated on this reel and where you bought them?

why didn't you disassemble/clean/grease the thumbar - that's where 90% of these reels fuck up. thanks
That music was absolutely terrible. I'd really rather hear commentary.
Anyone wants to Supertune Abu reels get the parts from:
www.ebay.com.au/str/dadsoletacklerodandreelparts
No, it's not my shop.
Music almost put me to sleep lol don't watch when tired
hahahaha.... sure as shit, I fell asleep!!!
just woke up and read the comments...wish I would've read before watching, I would've muted it lol
the power handle ruined the look of the reel, the original handle looked better
Who cares, its about performance...not looks
No kidding, a large spinning reel knob like the Van Staal reels is just dumb!
The stock handles have a lot of wiggle on the knob's, almost too much. Kinda makes the retrieve not as smooth feeling. I have the left hand and a right hand model . Both wiggle. The color sucks but I bet the reel feels way better with the power handle
The music kills this video
the music is horrible , but vid is great, refilm it discussing and doing a walk thru of what your doing
Good idea. But don't hold your breath.
The "Red" handle don't really go with the Blue reel....Ugly
Horrible music! Thanks for the vid.
RIP your reel. this set up is not made for saltwater, and this will spin faster than your reel and snap off 70% of your lures.
