  • A scenic jet ski ride up the Saginaw, Shiawassee and Flint rivers in Michigan, July 17, 2020.
    This is an updated version of this video. I shortened it a bit, added some music and took out some narration. (Newly uploaded 10-25-2020)

    Very nice re-edit!!! Felt like I was there with you. Love the slow-mo in the shallows. Also like the edits passing the bridges. Great work Rod!

    After watching this video, I tried the Shiawassee yesterday, way too shallow. Got stuck several times.

    Enjoying your videos, still riding my 85 js550 stand up jet ski on lake charleviox, just turned 52. Never realized you could explore those rivers like that looks like fun, on one around lots to see.

    Cool video. I grew up in the Swan Creek/S. River Rd area. Awesome wild life refuge right there near the swan creek/ center rd.

    Did you ever hit anything? I saw a close call with a log there! Rivers kind of scare me for obstacles in the water!

    • @rodneybrocke
      @rodneybrocke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't hit anything on this trip, but I hit a log the other day in the Shiawassee River. I was going about 40 and heard and felt a small thump on the bottom of the hull. I didn't hit it very hard, so I think it was far enough below the surface that it wasn't an issue. If a river has a current, it helps because then you will see a ripple on the surface, which you can avoid. This area where I hit the log was a wide spot and had almost no current. The nice thing about a jet drive is there is nothing sticking down in the water and it only needs a few inches when planed out. If I had hit that log with an outboard, it would have been a much bigger thump!

    Very cool Rodney. I enjoyed your videos as I felt I was apart of your exploration journey. I am 59 years old and have worked my tail off my entire career. In a few years I will retire and look forward to adventures like you are doing. Be safe! Regards, Gregg

      There's a shallow water area immediately after the Hwy 13 bridge. If you stay in the channel, where the water is flowing fast, you'll be fine. Watch my video at 4:22. Other than that keep an eye out for ripples on the surface, indicating an object below. There are some blind corners too, watch for people fishing from small boats or from the shore. With the rain we've had lately (early May '23), the river is probably high now and you might be able to go farther than I did. Have fun!

    Just for fun, I found your ending GPS coordinates on Google maps. You stopped a few miles North of Burt approximately where Seymour Rd. becomes East Sloan Rd. I've kayaked the Flint river from Flushing to Montrose and Montrose to Burt. It can get extremely shallow in places.

      Wow! Nice! Sometime when the water is high I want to see if I can get farther up. A kayak is perfect for exploring.

    What camera mounts do you use for your jet ski?

    • @rodneybrocke
      @rodneybrocke  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The low-front camera is on a RAM suction cup mount. The side looking camera is on a GoPro mount with a flat shoe that stays on the cowling. The rear facing camera is clamped to the hand hold with a “Smallrig” clamp. The low-front and rear facing cameras are also tethered to the ski with a short piece of thin rope in case they vibrate loose. All cameras are running with image stabilization turned on.

    I thought you need 100 feet each side or no wake zone in Michigan?

    • @rodneybrocke
      @rodneybrocke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No fuel stops. I always start with a full tank. This trip wasn’t long enough to require refueling. The VX Cruiser has pretty good range. I put 102 miles on it the other day riding up the river and exploring some of the tributaries. Fun trip!

    Must be that was bewfore the Damsfailed ..

    • @rodneybrocke
      @rodneybrocke  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After. The dams failed on May 19, 2020. This Flint River video was done about 2 months after the breaches, and by that time, the river had had time to purge all the logs and debris. But you'll notice at the beginning of my Alabaster loading dock video uploaded on June 8, how muddy the water looks: th-cam.com/video/NgJtGaYtBrI/w-d-xo.html This was caused by tons of silt being washed downriver from the floods and some 20 miles out into the bay!

    What kind of jet ski, and what is its top speed?

    • @rodneybrocke
      @rodneybrocke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a 2019 Yamaha VX Cruiser HO with a non-turbo 1.8 liter engine. Wide open, I can get 63 MPH out of it. I did run it wide open quite a bit for this video, but I normally hold it back to 45-50 with smooth water -- don't want to wear out the engine prematurely. It's been a great ski. I bought it new this spring and put over 80 hours on it so far -- so much fun to ride!
