    As a veteran rider of "the gorge", I give you a lot of credit for making this ride with only 8 weeks of riding under your belt. In fairness though, the fun really starts a mile or so upstream. You experienced about 35% of what lies ahead. We have riden all the way to the whirlpool. The waves grow BIG and the speed of the current is unreal. Relentless. Did you notice the vertigo you get if you try to match the current while looking up and to the sides?

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I am hoping to go again this summer. That particular trip was just after a few days of heavy rain, so the water was higher and running faster (so Mark Forest told me as he did it the year before)

    I grew up along the lower Niagara river. I’ve seen many bodies pulled from that river. And many to never be seen again. I hope you realize how you and your friend are extremely lucky. No joke, those rapids and current are always changing.

      Agreed. I live in NF too and the whirlpool actually reverses direction depending on water level, which can fluctuate at any time of day depending on how much water (most of it, usually) is diverted to hydroelectric tunnels above the falla and how much is released to actually go over the falls. When there are surges it is magnified at the downstream rapids as the gorge narrows sharply.

    Grew up along the river. You need to realize just how utterly dangerous this act was, and how getting yourself into danger would also have put search and rescue responders in danger too. It is not just a 'personal' act or 'private' when you wade into those waters, you are committing rescue personel to put thier own lives at risk when they wade in to save you. These are some of the most dangerous waters in the world and they deserve to be treated with reverence and an attitude of serious reserve.

    I live 10 minutes outside of Niagara Falls and I KNOW THAT RIVER!!! You say only 8 weeks experience and you're going into water that could swallow your sled whole, with you with it. I'm sorry to say this and I don't mean to be rude but WITH ONLY 8 WEEKS OF EXPERIENCE, YOU ATE FOOLISH FOR EVEN ATTEMPTING THIS!!! Those currents can throw you around and swallow you like nothing. Possibly the most idiotic thing I've seen. Only 8 weeks. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU HAVE 300 YEARS IF EXPERIENCE. THE RIVER DOES NOT CARE!!! I'm glad you made it back safely. Please do more research before doing something like this again. The tours they run have over 1000 HP to combat those rapids. That's why you're getting thrown around. I'm glad you turned back when you did. And the Jetboat is a huge jet ski. They're both powered by the force of water.🙂👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    We just ran part of this last week about to where you did . The first set of narrows after the dams. What we went through was much rougher. The water levels seemed lower the waves were insanely high and would launch over them. We stopped as we were not in wet suits and i fugured if one went off a wetsuit and life jacket would be much safer. Considering a lanyard onto the machine as well so you can pull yourself back to it.
    Good for you for pushing yourself to your limit but respecting it at the same time.

    I took my 96 waveraider a much smaller ski almost as far as you went, which wasnt smart especially alone. I was 19, it was the 90s lol. One of The scariest parts was turning around into the current. The speedo says 15-20 but you look on shore and you dont seem to be progressing. Then start turning and that weird feeling that only those that have experienced it know happens, then you catch the current and ZIP you are flying back down river.
    Its confusing to the senses to be on semi flat water but the current moves in semi circles that make no sense, shifting you sideways and forward same time. You were smart to turn around, once you reach that mental limit, you can start to make mistakes.

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You nailed that, it that turning sensation as the current tries to pull and turn you. Then you suddenly look up and it feels like the land is moving, like a surreal feeling. Then once you throttle and ride the current , then your heart rate drops again.
      Adrenaline rush but a close poop rush too lol

    This water is super unkind. Even the creek runoff has undertoe and a strong current.
    I can't tell you how many tourists we loose every summer.
    Anytime I see someone near the water, I warn them how dangerous it is and explain to them how to get out in case they ever find themselves in it.
    (Swim in to shore. You'll never swim against the current, but you can swim across it. Once you get closer to shore the current weakens and you can get out... but only if you're lucky)

    A couple things, the point where you got to is a commonly fished area. Many people go in and out of there without incident. That said, I agree with a lot of people. That river is to be respected. You listened to what it told you which tells me you’re a smart boater.

      In the fall, you’ll see 20-30 Lund fishing boats right where they were at. A little further is Devils Hole rapids. Thats where all boats with the exception of the Whirlpool Jet stop.
      All boats except mine.
      30 years ago, I had a high horsepower boat, and I would go through Devils Hole and ride all the way up to the Whirlpool Rapids. I did it all the time in the spring, summer and fall. I’d get up into the Whirlpool and shut my boat off and just drift around in huge circles. That’s the cutoff though. Not even the Whirlpool Jet boat can go past there. EXCEPT…search TH-cam. There is a guy who built a special boat, and he made it through the rapids. He stayed very close to shore on the Canadian side.
      I thought I had a lot of balls until I saw that guys video.

      @@JDderd yes!! Incredible! I used to live right off of the Robert Moses Parkway. I could walk a short distance and look at the rapids from the top of the gorge.
      And that’s what I did many times before I took my boat up into the whirlpool. I scouted out the route from the top, where I could see the rocks and plan my path (over Devils Hole Rapids).
      Once I got past Devil Hole Rapids, it was smooth as glass into the Whirlpool and I would pull right up to where the rapids start (or, actually end). It was amazing to look at those rapids up that close. I drove my boat up there dozens and dozens of times, and took a few brave (stupid?) people sometimes.
      But when you see those Whirlpool Rapids, you know that’s the end of the line…you’re not going any further. The big Whirlpool Jet boat couldn’t even get through that.

    Oh and you Should Have learned one thing from that event it's turn towards the wake when the waves are coming from the Jet boats you don't stay side by side with them. Point your jet ski directly at the waves.And give it a little bit of gas.Don't just sit there and float because it'll wobble.You all around drive into the waves and it'll be a lot sturdy. I know that doesn't seem like you would expect.That would be the right choice to go towards the waves but it is.

    Born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY. Just to be clear this is the lower Niagara River, the falls is many miles upstream and this is the water that has flowed over the falls. Anyone watching this and thinking this is a good idea just don't. This is a very dangerous river on a large boat and to do it on a jet ski you are taking a big risk. If you end up in the water there are some very strong undertows and extremely fast currents that change direction frequently. If they would have gone upriver just a short distance they would have been on class 6 rapids which only the jet boats go through. I've seen too many bodies pulled from this river and some that went in were never found again.....

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Many people drown in the falls, and when I say many, I mean dozens.
      These events rarely make it to the the news because most are Suicide and bodies are rarely recovered until weeks later.
      Once you go under the water line, many drown because the person is entangled on a branch or rock under the surface.
      I won't be doing that again. Queenston bridge is as far up as I will go.
