Fishing an old ABANDONED Quarry... Then something CRAZY happened! 😯

- I couldn't believe what happened while fishing this overgrown abandoned quarry... there are some HUGE fish in here. I love fishing wild and unique places like this and for good reason, you just never know what's going to happen! I've done a lot of perch fishing in here before, mostly lure fishing, and have even caught a big one. But can we catch an even bigger fish this time? As well as my normal lures, I brought along some worms following the advice given to me by people who have fished here before. What will we catch?

Get 5% off the Travel rod and reel I was using here by using code AFUK5 (Fish Rig 180 + RR1000) on the Rigged and Ready website: riggedandready.net/
I'd highly recommend you get yourself the lure combo I was using too, it's been absolutely magical for me!

I love ponds like this. There were a few around my town in southern Lincolnshire. Sadly in recent years they've both been fenced off and posted with no fishing signs, due to a number of people caught poaching with fixed nets and long lines.
One was dug by a nearby factory and fed by an adjacent drain. Originally used as a holding pond for part of their water supply, once they switched fully to main water it was full of perch and roach/dace from the drain inlet, and it was stocked with carp and tench. Speaking to older locals, we found out it was only 6ft at it's deepest and no one had really fished it for over a decade. We cut a few clearings to the bank, and cleared the weeds/snags. Managed to fish it every day for months before anyone else discovered it.
The other was a holding pond next to a train line and was originally used to refill steam engines.
No idea how any fish got in there, as it was miles from the river, but it was full of bream, roach, eels, and nothing else.. I can only assume they got stuck after a nearby dyke must have flooded before the relief channel for the river was built and flooding was more common.
No one else ever fished there, never saw anyone or any signs anyone had been fishing there, apart from a one man boat that was always moored in a different spot...
Eventually after almost a decade of fishing there all the fish seemed to vanish from one week to the next.
That sounds like you had a few really cool spots, a shame they were fenced off! The mystery about fishing these kinds of places is the best bit!
You're taking adventure fishing to a whole new level these days. These little hidden waters are almost always worth the effort. Even if you don't catch, the experience is something you can't get anywhere else.
Thanks mate, really appreciate that! Yeah I couldn’t agree more, it’s great fun 👍
Thank you for putting her back
Catch and release only for me mate no need for the thanks!
Seem like a genuinely nice bloke. Really happy to be out fishing, great positivity!
Thanks mate, that’s very kind of you! I appreciate it 👍
Great one this one George!
Love how excited you get, and what a trout? Almost hybrid salmon?? lol
Well done working your way around that lake pal!
Keep em coming 👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed this one! Beast of a fish wasn’t it, huge mouth!
Amazing video as always and so jealous you get to visit these beautiful spots.
I really have to stop using big lures and go back to my smaller ones as you prove time and time again you still get beautiful fish even with those small lures.
Thanks for watching mate! Yeah smaller ones can definitely work well. Funnily enough, for me the stick bait is quite a big lure for perch fishing!
Mepps Aglias and Comet's in small sizes are excellent spinner's, 0's and 1's
I love it, im relying on watching you catch the big uns, i broke my back a month ago so im stuck in hospital and in a wheelchair for the rest of my life but my goal is to be ready for some lure fishing the start of next summer ☀️
Thanks for watching! Fingers crossed I do get some big ones. I remember you commented recently, very sorry to hear about your back. When you're feeling up to it i'd be happy to come along if you wanted some company!
DeekM, so sorry to hear about your back buddy, best wishes to you in the future, stay strong mate and good luck getting out there fishing
hope you improve bud, people that are told they will be like that can improve i hope you do,
@@lazycarper That is exactly the same think I was thinking. One thing I do know is get back out there and live the best life you can. A great attitude will carry you to places that may surprise you!

What a nice trout and a great fishing locale. Another great adventure. Hope to see some sea fishing again.
Thanks mate, a really cool spot isn’t it! Sea fishing will probably next be in spring 👍
Awesome vid mate 👍 had 6 chub out of the river yesterday, going big perch hunting on the canal soon 🎣
Well done mate that sounds like a great days fishing!
I worked in Quarries for 10 years as an Electrician. Every quarry has a source of fresh water and they have always been the most consistent fishing I’ve ever done. Mainly bc they’re never fished.
That’s cool to hear! By any chance do you know any I could have a go fishing? Or are you not Uk based
@@adventurefishinguk I’m not man. I’m in the U.S. wish I could help
👍
@@adventurefishingukwhere is this one pal?
It's amazing what fish eggs water birds pick up on the legs and feathers and carry to other waters, ponds etc. Nice trout & Perch lad..
Thanks mate! Is that how you reckon the fish got in there?
Love walking through the woods and finding forgotten ponds. They don't always pan out but once in a while I'll find a honey hole.
Yeah it’s the best way to fish in my opinion!
Lovely video pal , keep up the amazing work, takes a lot of effort, thanks.
Thanks for watching mate glad you enjoyed this one!
My buddies and I used to fish several old abandoned limestone quarries around our area and they all held monster bass and catfish - it was amazing to go there would be no one else around and we would be hauling in lunkers day after day. That was like 50 years ago and those days are long gone but the memories are still there! Lots of fun and good eating too.
great adventure. you have been enjoying the day. nice to see your channel growing 👍💪🎣
Thanks mate, really appreciate the kind words!
I love these kind of spots. So much mystery as to what's in them. I'm watching from Canada and as soon as I saw the water, the first thing I thought was, "Brown trout!" Though I am a trout fisherman, I'm always tempted when I catch a brown to keep them because they taste so good! You got 2 wet feet, but that was a beautiful fish!
Yeah I love these kinds of places too I find fishing them absolutely fascinating! Catch and release culturally for wild trout over here in the UK 👍
Top video matey 👍 love watching yourself, snagged bro and the Ginger 1 lol, oh and not to forget the OG at Ta fishing 😉 😂
Thanks mate, means a lot you put me in the same category as those big names!
Mate that trout was amazing. Well done
Thanks mate, very unique fish wasn’t it. Probably one of my favourite!
That was absolutely mad. No way would you expect brown trout to be in there. Really shocked. Also shocked about the crazy woman. You can get cramp in those conditions. Great find that gravel pit. Had a few two pound perch in my time. Always a great fighter
Crazy isn't it! I've heard someone might have put it in there 8 years ago. Thanks for watching!
Perch are really hardy, we stocked a rooftop water tank with perch and they were still going strong year's later
Loved this vid .... exciting venue and beutiful trout thanks for upload bro

What a fine trout! With a fish that size in a quarry that small, there has to be a good food source for them. Loved the video!
Thanks mate! I think it's been feeding on fish by the looks of things, young roach and perch i'd say!
Incredible fish mate! Love your enthusiasm.but the lady that went swimming in there Brrrrrrr 🥶FairPlay.

I love yellow perch fishing, here in the states, we have a unique fishery where the migrate through salt water to a brackish or fresh water , then congregate in the small creeks to spawn , usually starts in February here on the eastern shore of Maryland
That's really cool to hear I had no idea the species could tolerate brackish water. Thanks for watching!
now that was fantastic well done to catch a wild brown trout in a old quarry with no internal stream flowing in to it is amazing
Thanks mate, that fish must have quite the story. I reckon someone put it in there when it was young and it’s grown on!
super mate
What a lovely location
Not interested in heavily stocked carp lakes with toilet blocks and tackle shops but this sort of thing really interests me.
Me too, couldn’t agree more! Thanks for watching 👍

Great vid and totally agree about the trash issue - many D-heads out there. So did you clarify how the trout got into that wee lake??
Such a shame isn’t it! I heard someone put one trout in there 7 years ago so it could well be that one!
Yes mate. What a cracking location. New sub
Thanks for subscribing mate I really appreciate that!
Such a unique low impact lake to fish. It would be fun to lower a small boat and paddle around. Perch are very tasty, and what a beautiful trout!
Yeah by-boat would be a great way to fish it! Just catch and release for me though 👍 Thanks for watching!
Hello George. …. Hope you and the famalam are all doing great ….

What an adventure that was. I think on hindsight it was worth the wet feet for the pb trout 😂. Im guessing you are starting to have a new favourite lure now. It wont be long until you have Alfie on the bank with you now.
Haha yeah definitely worth the wet feet! Fingers crossed the lure keeps working the way it is 👍
That was class mate

That fish will keep getting bigger 😲😲😲
Definitely looked like a fish eater so I reckon so!
I wouldn't be asking what a trout is doing in there, I would be wondering why people leave the trash behind
Yeah it’s a huge shame isn’t it, really upsetting to see. Thanks for watching the video though!
Every time I go fishing I take a garbage bag with me I'm a bank fisherman and I always leave with it at least half full its disgusting so many ppl are just plain ignorant
@@adventurefishinguklisten bro I don't know if you are familiar with these spots but if you love course fishing which you do then you should really get your ass up there. I'm talking about Stanhope in Co Durham, and if you love quarries then get yo butt there I shit you not you'll love it. My old man is from there and they are stocked with trout, tench, perch, carp, roach, bream and more. Trust me mate you'll love it they are right next to the river wier some of them. Let me know if you've been before they have monster fish and if you haven't then get yo ass there, the people are lovely straight up people and the fishing is awesome, both in the quarries and the river wier.

I'd try deadbaiting using a small roach or something like a minnow while lure fishing aswell I think that would pick the bigger perch out that live there
yeah I think that would be a good shout. Looking at the size of the trouts mouth it's definitely a fish eater too so might even run into this one again!
@@adventurefishinguk 🤞 tight lines
I was just thinking that, if I was in America, I'd say buy shiners. Maybe try one of them fishtaps they use and catch small roach and maybe minnows or sticklebacks if there's any

Thanks for watching mate!
If it's where I think I used to go scuba diving there. Lots of small fish back then it's good to see that they've grown up. There used to be a tunnel on the south end which we used for access.
That’s really cool, what species did you see and how long ago was it when you were there?
It was the early 1980s, species were mainly roach, rudd and perch but there was talk about pike being there as well (I never saw one). There was always water running through the tunnel so perhaps the trout migrated from the beck to the south east and up through the tunnel.
@@rowancrafts They'd struggle really as there's a small waterfall at the other end of the tunnel, think they must have been introduced.
Fantastic 😊

Thanks mate, I’m over the moon with that!
Nice one, pretty sure i had the same fish out last winter! Live bait works well in there for 2lb+ perch.
Really cool to hear. Are there many big perch in there? Any other species?
@@adventurefishinguk yeah, the bigger fish tend to be at the far side or at least mid way across. Just a little trickier to get to at this time of year. I've only ever had roach, perch, trout and minnow but you hear tales of people putting other species in there too.
@@thingsandstuff50 I’ve found it very tough to get past all that weed in the middle, have you found a solution to fish the other side?
Yeah, there is a way down from the top but it's a bit of a scramble. In summer it's easy enough to wade and swim.
@@thingsandstuff50 think I know this water. Does it begin with a G and end with E?
Incredible. I’ve always wondered how fish get in these abandon quarries
Thanks for watching mate! I think in this case people have put them in a long time ago
Non native could be stocked but fish eggs get transferred in the mud on water fowl
Fished an old quarry myself the Bass were crazy hit the bobber and if you caught a bluegill good luck getting him past the Bass very fun though 😊
Really cool to hear, it's my dream to come fishing in america one day!
What a klonker. Yoir reward formcold feet. Definitely worth a revisit. If the perch are growing to a good size there's got to be a healthy stock of them to sustain the cycle or good volume of bait fish for them to thrive. This would give you a choice of fly fishing for the trout or perhaps dead/live bating to seek out the bigger perch
Thanks mate! I saw in summer the place is full of big roach shoals, that could be why the trout has such a big mouth. Adapted tom mainly feed on fish, what do you think?
Makes sense. I know you are more into your lure fishing but I reckon if you've seen roach shoals there could be some absolute klonkers that have escaped the perch & grown to decent size. Especially if no pike in there. Winter good time to go for em. Red maggot good but might attract the small perch. Bread flake may turn up trumps. Good luck
@@charliesmithers7663 yeah there could be some really big ones in there, I actually caught one on a lure last time funnily enough!

Hi George, I'm a big fan and I live in the Lancaster area. Just wondering if you have any tips for catching Perch (on lures) in the winter as I'm struggling. Are they in different locations to the summer or should I be using different lures. Great video, by the way. That spot looks so peaceful and beautiful.
I’m from Lancaster, perch are tiny in our canals
They will tend to be more concentrated in places with more structure and deeper basins etc! In winter maybe try to slightly increase the size of your lures and slow the retrieve. The lure I used here bounced slowly across the bottom will worth well
@@adventurefishinguk I'll try bigger lures and deeper spots then, thanks
