    I wholeheartedly agree with this return/recovery approach.
    My FTP was 344w, I was crashed in a ‘race’ and destroyed the right hand side of my body. After hospital and months off work I started back up on Zwift and the 2nd or 3rd session in did an FTP test.... of 150w.
    I don’t know what was more crushed, my ego at that point or my collapsed lung and multitude of smashed up bones immediately after the crash.

    Francis you said exactly what was going to drive me insane if no one mentioned it in regards to VO2 max. So many think it’s a direct reflection of fitness person to person when it is nearly irrelevant - 2 people with the same VO2 max could have drastically different race results. Thank you for itching that scratch for me :)

I've got an ultra marathon relay this weekend (yes I run, don't tell anyone) and will be glamping on bourbon and cupcakes, but during serious competition I've stuck to gels and balls of gloop (date, banana, cashew butter mushed together and coated in coconut), because of portability and because they seem to have roughly the max amount of carbs and sugars I can process while bouncing around.

      Sounds similar to John Woodburn. He was in his 70s and could still ride the wheels off anyone once he was in the metronome mode. Seemed to have an ability to switch off all feelings of being tired, thirsty, hungry; never show weakness. Anecdote from a club ride in 30'C temperatures while everyone else was wilting and he was riding along with no bidon or anything, utterly unconcerned. Offered a drink, he nodded, took the bottle, drank it all, handed it back and just carried on.
      That generation also swore by baked rice pudding as race food. Cooked the night before into a solid cake, cut up and wrapped individually.

    The take home message I took from this is that if the ride quite intense and long you need to fuel regularly as you can only get in 400 cals of carbs per hour max. As a relative novice even I can chew through 600 cals per hour easily. Food for thought (pun intended).

      All people need to remember is there's a time and a place.
      Sugar isn't inherently bad, but it absolutely is a large cause of a lot of modern health problems! The problem is that a vast majority of the population aren't doing endurance sports which would justify the amount they're taking in.
      John Doe sitting in an office for 40 hours a week doesn't need 30 grams of sugar in his fizzy drink, and certainly not 3 times day.

    Interesting mate! Soo, doesn't table sugar bring your energy up fast, then dip lower than before the sugar intake?

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the sugar crashing only happens when you're unable to maintain blood glucose levels - i.e you're bonking - the crash happens if you have carbs (any source) keep exercising and don't have another intake to maintain energy levels

    • @cyklatillbahamas
      @cyklatillbahamas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WillGirling thanks for the reply! I think I get it?... Like if you forget to fuel properly beforehand, and try to salvage it on the ride with pure sugar, you're probably gonna bonk. But if you fuel good (the day before and leading up) then the table sugar more sort of complements your base of slower carbs

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cyklatillbahamas Not exactly - it doesn't have to be sugar, any simple carbohydrate is the same even fruit - If you're riding hard you will use carbohydrate - to maintain this you need to eat some - if you only eat it once and keep going hard for a while and start to feel tired again that isn't a "sugar crash" - that just you blood glucose levels being empty and you running on fumes nothing to do with sugar in itself cause that tiredness.

    So is glycogen the first feul the body wants to burn and when out of glycogen it goes to fat for extra fuel? Is that right?

    • @craigwilson118
      @craigwilson118 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that it is more to do with the intensity of what you are doing. When you sit around or walk/light spin you are burning mainly fat... it is slow release energy system. As you ramp up the intensity you need that extra energy quickly so you also start burning your stored glycogen on top of the fat burning. When these reserves run out you will not be able to maintain that intensity, hence you bonk and go back to being slow because it is only the fat burning remaining (its more the second glycogen system switches off, rather than switching back to fat).
      There are even faster systems like creatine that the body uses for max strength efforts but they don't apply so much to endurance sport as they run out in a few seconds... maybe kick starting a sprint.
      The body can also do weird things like turn protein into glucose but it's not a fast system... more for emergencies as your brain needs to run on sugar unless you are in ketosis.

  • @simonclark3566
    @simonclark3566 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    hmmm, digestion rates are different for solid complex carbs, intensity of racing should dictate what you put in your stomach? Gels in water bottles for road racing or slow-release for longer stuff right? fat and protein for longer stuff is welcome...10% of a hard ride is fuelled by muscle protein and increasing greater amounts by fat aren't they?. Just waiting for the Hvmn bar ;-)))

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely the choice of food should reflect the type of race you're doing - from crit, Road race all the way to TCR train with purpose with your nutrition also - I would say the complexity of the carb should reflect the duration and intensity of the race - which is essentially what you're saying, so yes haha. Fat will always give a contribution of energy used the % just changes depending on intensity.

Dates are full of bioavailable minerals/carb/micro nutrients. The Walnuts have healthy lipids that are critical for forming new cells. Fat/Lipid keeps every cell contained so you are not a bowl full of jelly. It also seals your skin so you don't leak blood. Pizza is poor food for energy because it has gluten and dairy which cause intestinal permeability and leads to diabetes. NEJM 2008
