The history of adventure in Shadowdale is rich and storied. Comment and let me know where else in the Realms you'd like to me to reveal! Thank you so much for your continued support! Without your contributions to this project we wouldn't be able to make these videos: patreon.com/EdGreenwood
Do you have any information on what else Elminster did during Baldur's Gate 3, besides send Gale Dekarious a simacrulum with a message from Mystra? (1492 DR)
Please Ed, Im dying for more amaunator lore. I am a thirsty woman. I want to know more about the sneaky Sun God. Personality, deals he has made, interactions with mortals. Ill take anything.
Mr. Greenwood! A question for you! Is Volo still banned from Shadowdale or has that elapsed? You did say that did happen in your earlier guide book to the dale lands. As you said before he too is a chosen even if he doesn't know it. Would he be welcomed there or no?
Creatures stranger and more powerful than Lord AO were mentioned in one of the Realms book(the book involving Kezef). I think it would be interesting to learn more about this topic.
Well.... damn. How long has it been? I lost track of D.R. years since I last played there in the 1990s. I wonder if anyone besides my own Char ever tried to rebuild Krag Castle, its not even on the last map I saw. 16,000 people?!? Incredible.... they haven't paved the road too, have they? About Shadowdale, I always suspected this was ground-zero in your building of the Realms. Am I right? It all seemed to dilate outwards from there, so long ago. Am I right?
back in 1st/2nd, we purposely stayed away from the dales for most of our adventures. With people like El etc around. it was obvious that the TPB would do a lot of meddling around there. We predominatley played in the Savage Frontier. if that campaign was ever restarted ( its been 20 years). Boy would a lot of official stuff need to be chucked. Another oddty, would be that the OG characters that founded out country up the Delimbyr valley and around the bottom to Amphail. they would be still alive as they were all Demihumans.
I have been living in the realms for almost 30 years, and I just found your channel, its´ wonderful to see. Not sure you´ll see this mr. Greenwood, but an honest thank you.
I love the fact that, even though I have been adventuring in the Forgotten Realms for decades, I can still discover new lore about the setting. Thanks for these videos. I really enjoy them.
I've been wanting to do adventures in the Dalelands since I've been doing research into the older editions of D&D and The Dalelands are a very interesting place. Knowing what's going on in Shadowdale in 1490s helps because my campaign is starting in 1499
10:12 "Will you do the sensible thing, or be governed by your ire and wants?" Good saying, that's something people should ask themselves more often (though it's not completely their fault, since we're often in environments engineered to make people want things, and that favor confrontation instead of dialogue).
I own a MUD based off of 2nd edition DnD. It is based in Faerun and It used to be called Shadowdale Mud. Shadowdale was our starter zone. I can safely say that elminster is living fine next to his tower. He is lonely as we dont have much players anymors, but he is enjoying the world with hundreds of zones and thousands of items and monsters.
1. I love the inclusion of the names as flying text on screen 2. I love that the map used is from my absolute favorite D&D books of all time; the 3rd edition FR book!
Would love to see a video about Khelben Blackstaff! I had him return to life in my Realms campaign, but would be interested to see what you have to say on this amazing character and what he might be up to currently.
Just wanted to say thank you so much, Ed, for creating this wonderful fantasy setting and investing so much passion and energy into The Realms over the decades. I’m just getting back into fantasy after a 25+ year break from the genre and I’m loving it now more than ever! There’s so much Realms literature to choose from, it’s overwhelming, but I’m starting with the Elminster series. Spellfire was the very first Realms book I ever read, as a 14 year old back in the summer of 1990 and I have so much fondness for it, so Elminster’s saga seems like a fitting place to jump right back in…
Don't miss the great Realms novels Erin Evans, Erik Scott de Bie, and Rosemary Jones have brought us, and the "deep lore dive" pair of Steven Schend novels, too!
Thanks for another great video, Ed! A suggestion for your editing team: can we stop putting teaser clips at the beginning of videos? It's a trend that I wish would end, as I would rather the video just start... Thank you.
Ah the Dalelands, my childhood home. Remember this word friends if you happen across the Sword of the Dales: Merrydale. Let’s just say it could be your key to unlocking a wider world.
Ed ur a god! Have you ever been apart of these fabled D&D games that apparently the writers and editors of D&D used to play back in the day? Did you play Elminster and Bob Salvatore play Cadderly with Elaine Cunningham playing Elaith Craulnober and Jeff Grubb DMing? Or did you all play new characters? And if so did those characters make it into the realms officially?
I do love all these videos Ed is outputting but are there plans to return to Waterdeep lore? He did that one video a few months ago and asked what places and people of the city we'd like to lnow more and there were a TON of awesome requests. It seems like making a playlist / collection of Waterdeep lore would help GMs and Waterdavian lovers hooked on these videos a wee bit more and also more engaged.
Oh, I have plans! There's SO much Waterdeep lore that has to be woven in that they take a lot of time. I have to travel to another country, seizing gaps in my day job to do so, to record these videos, so we do them in batches, and it can take a long time for "the next chance" to revisit something. Rest assured that I haven't forgotten Waterdeep, at all, and there WILL be more!
@@edgreenwoodofficial Capital, my good man! I was a bit worried it was just a flash in the pan, so thank you for clarifying. I know content libraries aren't built in a day and it's hard to tease what's coming next in videos when they're done in batches, that's very true. It warms my heart to know it's still at the forefront of your mind! I love Waterdeep so much I started calling myself The WaterDAVian on my Dnd Channel, so I am eager to weave the lore into my own playful machinations as much as possible.
You're quite right, but Larloch then sailed in to seize the chance to take Mordy down and grab what magic he could. Mordenkainen defeated him, but the mental damage was considerable, taking Mordenkainen from "bouts of madness" to "dangerous to be anywhere near, anytime." Which was when El (with divine approval) stepped in to really nursemaid him, beginning the mind-healing that Storm later took cover and continued.
I would love to see an expanded version of the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar. I know he has more! I was really hoping Goodman Games' Original Adventures Reincarnated would continue and we'd get some 2nd edition stuff...
Shadowdale sounds like heaven relative to the rest of the drama that happens around Faerun. I should start retiring my characters there instead of consigning them to my ever-growing list of undead 😂 I'm quite curious about the frost folk (from which frost men are derived) and their stomping grounds; from what I could glean on the wiki, their range goes from the North of the Hordelands (if they still bear that name) all the way to the Sea of Moving Ice. Without the infrastructure of roads that the southern lands have, I'm curious as to how they were able to disperse across such a wide range while still co-existing alongside many of the competing tribes, monsters, giants, and demons that dot the northern landscape of Faerun. Perhaps Sossrim and their shared lineage might provide some answers? A video on Sossal would be quite the treasure trove!
You wanna hear something a little bit odd? I've been a DM for 30 something years now and I have read many books set in forgotten realms but I have never actually ran a game set in forgotten realms.
It's unfortunate that the calendar no longer makes sense. A leap into the future that is much too advanced compared to the few events that are taking place. The issues of the first and second editions were not respected.
I would like to see where the rest of dales have gone in the 15th century, especially if Scardale was able to recover from being a hive of scum & villainy. I set my first campaign in the rural side Dalelands and my second is going into the more urban cities of the dales.
Would that George R. R. Martin learn from you how to get things done. Nah, nevermind. The Winds of Winter will never be released by him, so we ought to just write our own.
Oddly enough this vid made me realize there are a LOT of lesbians in the forgotten realms and most that aren’t are at least bi or promiscuous. This wouldn’t happen to involve a different type of fantasy you’re into would it Mr. Greenwood? 😂
@@edgreenwoodofficial well, dont underestimate the old school nerds of us that are left. Besides at the rate Hasbro is going and by extension WOTC……. Wishful thinking maybe. At least we still have our old sage with us.
Not to be disparaging or anything, but it seems that the vast numbers of the leaders of Shadowdale are women. Are the men of that dale not good enough to be chosen as heirs of leadership? Or is this merely a cultural quirk of the folk there?
@@edgreenwoodofficial I can see that. Still, I would figure the women would be more pushed to have kids far more seeing the mortality rate is so high. It kinda mirrors our real world not that long ago. There is a reason my own grandma was one 12 kids. Families had to be huge.
I have been slowly plotting next campaign to be in Daelands, so update on various characters is very welcome :) I was not expecting revelations about Mordekainen

Any lore from the man himself is always a treat Sage Pickett.
Please make a lore vid on Evermeet or Aglarond. I can't find much on them and I think they're far too interesting to be forgotten.
Elaine Cunningham’s novel Evermeet is well worth a read if you haven’t read that already. 👍
my first ever forgotten realms character came from the dalelands
Love the Realmslore Ed. I would buy stuff like this on DMs Guild.
Great video, looking forward to more of these! Especially any updates on Shaundakul, the Ruins of Myth Drannor and the rest of the Dalelands!

I love the original Forgotten Realms setting.
In my head canon, FR remains as it was before WotC got its grubby hands on it.
Hi Ed! Thanks for always sharing FR lore and how were the world's politics and leaders, it inspires a lot of my sessions!
sadly i will not advance so far into the time line. I prefer second edition.
I came from second edition. It's really cool to see some of the new tales and introduce new players to "legends" like the 2e stuff

Wish they come back to the dalelands in 5e! So much history there. Can we get a video on the Pereghist of Darkhold? Or the moon sea of today
I'm a Human Cleric of Lathander and hail from Shadowale. I love Shadowdale.
I really like the portraits of these characters. Who is the artist?
When I die i definitely plan on adventuring in your world before moving on to bring my own world to life.
Thanks for the video Mr. Greenwood
