Eating at Don Angie. One of the Best Italian Restaurants in NYC. One Michelin Star
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 19 มิ.ย. 2024
- I eat at and review the Michelin Starred Italian restaurant Don Angie, which is in Greenwich Village of New York City. Don Angie serves incredible pasta and is very popular, which makes getting a reservation a challenge. For dinner, I enjoy a variety of plates from pasta to tiramisu.

A loner has to be alone. Takes one to know one. Really appreciate that you don’t spend twenty minutes talking to the camera - letting the dish die a slow, painful death in the process. Love your content.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Yeah, I agree. I hate creators that aren't actual foodies, you can tell when they wait (pizzas look like they've been left out for half an hour)
Agree. 👍
By far the best restaurant reviewer on here! The editing, the voice over, the knowledge. Bravo.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words because I do try to make the best videos that I can.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
James has a great way to compose his script!
the knowledge????? Do you know anything about food? And he disses other restaurants in an oblique way to sound like he knows something. He sucks.
Try Alexander the Guest
James, you are in class all by yourself. You have brought a new excitement to NYC dining. Not since the days of Ruth Reichl from the New York Times have I anticipated a review. Keep up the good work.
That's really nice of you to say. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
I'm happy to hear that even with people weaseling ahead of you in line, you were still able to snag a seat. Also, great book choice!
Yes! Thank you! I was really lucky that day and it was a great book!
how is someone waiting in line and waiting for others to join 'weaseling'? It makes sense for only one person to wait in line.
Your style of reviewing is so good. You impart a sense of what you are experiencing plus you include other details and aspects of the restaurant. Other reviewers are rather formulaic but you have the ability to bring us all into the experience. I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel!
Thank you! And thank you so much for the really kind words! Yeah, the food is the most important part of a restaurant, but there's a lot more to dining out than just the food and I really want to highlight it all the best I can.
Honesty is so rare on TH-cam. You get: 1. The people who don't know what they are talking about. 2. The people who pretend everything is amazing (life ain't like that). 3. The people who nitpick to find everything negative possible. Experiences are a mix of positive and negative. Being honest about that is what people want to watch.
@@mauicountygis5450 Yes. James is a authentic person. I think that's why he can communicate his experiences so well.
@@mauicountygis5450 as a food professional, he has NO idea what he is talking about. He is a total GOOF.
Agree 😊
Okay, I am now "hooked" on your commentary & review. You are the "real deal", and are sincerely engaging & personable! Just recently became a subscriber, and I am so glad I did! Thank you for sharing this post. Peter, out!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
How immersive this review of Don Angie was - just like your other reviews, and it made me long for this type of open-ended cuisine that somehow blend so many seemingly disparate elements into cohesive dishes. I feel like what makes your channel most inviting is the synthesis of amazing photography with your delightful, insightful narrative. Just "wow."
Thank you so much! I really like your comment and appreciate the support!
I've been watching many of your videos to plan a "restaurant tour" sort of thing with a friend. Your reviews are very enjoyable and have helped a lot with my choices! Thank you
Glad you like them! Thank you for watching!
Another entertaining and revealing episode, James. I like the combination of a midwestern everyman being himself and visiting posh NY restaurants to see if they live up to the reputation. You can tell a good experience when it just makes you smile. That happened every course at Don Angie!
Thank you so much! Yeah, I was still smiling even days after this meal. It was very good!
Hey James, really very interesting and entertaining.Your descriptions and reactions to your food selections are warming and wonderful. Very....very much appreciated. Thanks for the Italian tour! From this Italian!❤️
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the nice words!
I love your style of reviewing, you really have a knack for this. Don Angie is now up on my list, as are many others you've covered. I really enjoy your channel, you're as entertaining as the restaurants you review. Keep it up and stay inspired, you're appreciated.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate those nice words!
Love your reviews so much!! I have soooo many restaurants to try during my upcoming visit to NYC! & I just added Don Angie to my list 🥰
Thank you! Indeed, Don Angie is definitely worth a visit!
Thank you James for another great review! Please keep these fun , and a tad expensive, reviews coming! Right On!😎
More to come! Thank you!
James, you had me drooling with every course. Thanks for doing this review. Ciao!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Love your reviews. So balanced and descriptive. This looked yummy.
Thank you! Yeah, this was a great meal!
Been living in NYC for a decade and really appreciate your videos! Helps me decide if a $$$$ place is worth it or not. Great stuff!
Thank you! That makes me happy to hear!
I agree on the refreshing uniqueness of James’ reviews in an ocean of food review videos that all use the same tired and cliche style (ie, over-sell the enthusiasm with frenetic pacing). James is a true culinary adventure storyteller, with genuine and thoughtful commentary from Act 1 through 3. Superb production value as well, not just the visuals but his background music selections set the perfect backdrop - soothing and sophisticated. Exemplifying what a fine dining experience should be, even if the review is not that of an upscale restaurant, like this spot. Kudos, James. Big fan.
Thank you so much! Reading such nice comments like yours really heighten my enthusiasm to make the best videos possible. I really appreciate the support!
Always love your food and neighborhood videos
Thank you! That makes me happy to hear!
Another great video James. Food looked amazing. Nice to come home after a long day and see a video from one of my favorite reviewers. i have never eaten at a michelin star restaurant, maybe one day ill splurge.
Thank you! Yeah, the food was amazing! Definitely try a Michelin star restaurant someday. Not all of them are extremely expensive and the experience can be pretty memorable that can transcend the food.
I LOVE your elfen expressions and appreciation of the magnificent food.
Thank you! Yeah, food gets me excited!
Amazing review! Don Angie has been a bucket list ever since I saw their Munchies appearance, their lasagna for two is so unique. Great video as always!
Thank you! A couple of people near me ordered the lasagna and it looks amazing! It's definitely a dish to try!
You should reconsider being influenced by bourdain. He lived an empty life chasing novelty, and it took his toll on him in the end.
No one is perfect, and I'm never influenced by the entirety of an individual, but rather the parts of them that inspire me the most. Regarding Bourdain, his passion for travel and food is what I have admired about him.
Great review James, and great job getting the last seat at the bar! I love this restaurants classic bistro decor and feel inside. The food looked delicious although i was eyeing that potato side dish lol ! So classy that provided the pear dessert and cocktail on the house. Well done!
Thank you! Yeah, I was really lucky to get that last seat, because it led to an incredible dinner! I know what you mean. Those potatoes were amazing even though it was just a side!
Another home run James. Can't wait till next one.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
OMG I love your reviews Thank you for sharpng
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
My new favorite channel, just great videos!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Wow watching u enjoy this meal was a beautiful experience. I too loved and missed Anthony .. I still hear him on his show.. no reservations! Have to pick up that book. Cheers to you!
Thank you! Yeah, Anthony Bourdain has really inspired me. The book was definitely worth reading.
Another great review. 👍A double desert with a liqueur.
Very nice of Don Angie on a couple of complimentary items.
Thank you! Absolutely! It was a really nice spread for dessert.
Spectacular food! And thank you for making me hungry.
Haha! Yeah, it definitely was an amazing spread of food!
Very nice 👌!
You are so good at talking about your food experiences! ❤🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!
So excited for the reservation I snagged for my husband’s birthday this upcoming Sunday!
Nice! I hope you enjoy the restaurant!
What many reviewers don't offer in their videos is the price of everything! Thank you for that, as well as the quality of your content! Kudos! Now time for some bison burger reviews! 😂
Thank you! Yeah, I want to showcase every angle of the restaurant experience.
That chicken and sausage combo looked absolutely beyond amazing. I know James, it's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. Cheers!!!!
Cheers! Yeah, that was an amazing dish!
as always some great content👌
Thank you!
I can’t imagine cutting in line in NYC. You would think at a minimum there would be stink 👀. Another great video. Thanks, James!
Haha! Thank you!
Wow-that food looked delicious!
It was really good!
I will say I don’t like dining shacks in the winter but don angies I make an exception for. Somehow warm enough and with enough soft surfaces, music and lighting to make it alright
Indeed! Their outdoor dining setup is pretty nice.
That entire meal looked so good and innovative. It was well worth the price (as I could tell how much you enjoyed it).
Absolutely! I loved every bite of it!
So nice, sir! I worked for St. Vincent's Hospital as a NYC Paramedic until they closed, and this is right down the block (granted, there's a decade overlap in timing). I'm a huge fan of Tony, and am fortunate enough to have had a few drinks with him over time in The West Village. This looks excellent, I'll have to try and score a bar seat! Another exceptionally excellent review!
Thank you! That must've been a great experience to have had drinks with such a legend! I'm envious! He's been such an inspiration to me in terms of food and travel.
@Jamesnu Same! I've picked restaurants from his shows while traveling overseas. Read all his books. I was deviated when I found out.
@@2Wheels_NYC Same here!
Looking very nice. Thank you for sharing your review.😊😊
Thanks for watching!
@@Jamesnu You are welcome. You continue to give me some great additions place to go to when coming back to New York. ☺
An amazing presentation! Congratulations!
Thank you very much!
A very satisfying video!🍷
Thank you!
Great video. I love your reactions to the food. Silent and in words. Your food looked amazing. Desserts! OMG! Love your comment too about how you could share that one dish but you were happy to be alone so you can have it all to yourself. 😂
Great! You remind me of myself because I too am single and mostly eat out on my own. And I love it! I have travelled extensively and lived in other parts of the world so I am used to eating by myself. Nothing wrong with it. Plus it’s cheaper! 😎
Thank you so much! Yeah, while it's nice to share a meal with someone special, there are definitely benefits to eating alone. I've had so many great meals and experiences as well just by myself.
The bill wasn’t too bad considering all the food you ate! Delicious, loved this video.
Thank you! I definitely thought that the price was fair.
Excellent review James. I have not had the pleasure of dining at Don Angie, but hope to do so after seeing your review. Years ago I live on Charles Street between W4th and Hudson and would frequent another place nearby called Piccolo Angolo on Jane and Hudson. Very fond memories. The owner's name was Renato, but he has passed away. I believe his son Peter and daughter Maria now run the restaurant. You might want to consider trying it in the future. Take care and keep up the great work.
Thank you and thank you so much for the recommendation! I hope that you get to dine at Don Angie too, it's a great restaurant!
Your videos are a fantastic resource when planning our trip to NYC 🤝
Thank you! That really makes me happy to hear!
@@Jamesnu hey, so nice to see your reply. Bit of a wildcard comment, just like you we are passionate about food but never ate in a Michelin star restaurant so planning (praying) to reserve Don Angie, if we don’t get in there, where would your recommended back up be in NYC for a Michelin star restaurant. We are spending all evening watching your videos! Thanks again can’t wait for our February trip :)
@@vortexblinx792 Unfortunately, Don Angie did lose it's Michelin Star in the 2024 guide, but I think that it's still a great restaurant for a meal. If you're looking for Italian, Torrisi is really good and very popular. I also really enjoyed 63 Clinton for it's affordable, but varied tasting menu. I hope that you have a great trip!
@@Jamesnu thank you!
Been wanting to go here for a couple years myself - looking to go this year some time
It's fantastic! I hope you enjoy it!
I really enjoy your reviews, I kinda have a whole list of restaurants I'd like to hear your take on lol
Thank you! I have a huge list of restaurants that I plan to go to. Hopefully, we share some of the same ones.
i agree....should have seats for one...a lot of times-one will most likely PAY more-in food/tips/etc.....
Yeah, and I understand that it's a small restaurant, but I like having the table option especially when I'm filming a video, but thankfully the bar worked out.
Your videos are really great, and what makes me super happy is that you tip well!! I despise cheap people, and you are a generous bro. Wishing you the best!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! Yeah, there's nothing worse than a bad tipper!
You certainly did it up that day. Yum
It was a great meal indeed!
Love your reviews even though i'm 24 hours away from NYC
Thank you so much!
James your video's are amazing , I live in Manchester England , your food is so much better than here !!
I love watching your videos , iv only recently found your channel and its definitely my favourite foodie channel
I don't know how you manage to eat as much as you do ,maybe it's a man thing ?
I would have been full after the yummy pasta starter !!
Keep up the good work , i really do enjoy your videos , your honest and fair and always go in with an open mind
Thanks again James (hope you don't mind me calling you by your name ?) x ❤️ ❤️
Thanks for watching! Of course, calling me James is perfect. Also, thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it!
adding to my list!
It's a must visit!
Agreed!
That looked like a meal that is worth the cost and trouble. Will put on my list for when I visit friends in Manhattan.
For sure! If one enjoys Italian food, it's a must visit!
Very nice... the food and the video. I might even go check this one out. I like the West Village, even though the UES & UWS are more convenient. At least it isn't midtown.
Thank you! Yeah, it's definitely a restaurant to check out. Indeed, the character of the West Village is really nice, much better than Midtown.
Love your videos and was even more thrilled to see you reviewed one of my husband's... He is the CFO for Quality Branded and Don Angie is epic! Chrysanthemum salad and Garlic flatbread are icons! Scott and Angie are wonderfully, fabulously talented people! So happy to hear you had as expected, a wonderful visit!
Thank you! It was an absolute pleasure to dine there and I look forward to returning one day. Indeed, I'll definitely have to try the chrysanthemum salad and flatbread, they look amazing!
You are a such beautiful and enthusiastic person. I really enjoyed watching your reviews!
Thank you so much!
Safe Journey! CHOLULA!!!
Thank you!
Raking up the 🌟 Love It! I you don't kick me to the back of the line.
Haha! Yeah, I was so lucky to get that last bar seat.
The sweet potatoes did look great! Solo diners are better catered for now than ever, so it's a disappointment when one holds out like this - for visitors to NYC like me, it just gets scratched off the list because there's too much risk of not getting a spot at the bar. I dropped Café China for that reason on my last visit in 2017, though I was happy with the alternatives I picked.
Indeed, those potatoes were amazing! Yeah, I know what you mean regarding single diners. I definitely see a lot more people going out solo these days, but it's frustrating when you can't get a reservation and have to leave it partially to chance, especially if you're just visiting a city.
Now I have a fun evening in Germany. Thank you!
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
that chicken dish looks fantastic!
It was so good!
Wow what a place!
It's a great restaurant for sure!
I spotted the Japanese Sweet Potatoes whilst you initially were perusing the menu.
Nice! Yeah, they definitely caught my eye too.
You need a shirt that tells everyone you eat for two. Getting a reservation for one is strange to begin with and is next to impossible. I thought about booking for two and saying my date bail on. 😂 Getting sympathy from the wait staff.
By the way, I love your wristwatch collection.❤
Thank you! I'm a big fan of watches! Haha! Yeah, a shirt like that may come in handy sometime. I've thought about using that strategy too. I mean a restaurant pretty much has to honor the reservation even if not everyone shows up.
I love pasta i gotta check this one out
It's definitely worth checking out!
Hey James! This is a bucket list for me. Could you share your experience waiting on the line and how long you waited? I've been to Bad Roman which is the sister restaurant and it was excellent!
I got there 12 minutes before it opened and I probably should've gotten there earlier since I lucked out on getting the last spot at the bar. Once the restaurant opened, it was probably only a few minutes until I was seated. Yeah, I really want to try Bad Roman as well.
@@Jamesnu tysm for your response! That's not too bad. Going to give this a try. Bad Roman shouldn't be too hard to get! Weekdays like a Monday seems to be easy to get if you don't mind having a late dinner.
@@trendthis364 Thanks for the advice! Hopefully, I get around to Bad Roman soon.
Aww I wanted to see the stuffed garlic bread and the pasta dishes. It did look great, though.
I saw a lot of other people get the garlic bread and it looked amazing! It's definitely something that I have to try on my next visit.
I prefer old school to modern Italian. But looked amazing.
I know what you mean. I also really enjoy the traditional Italian American food, but I appreciated how Don Angie was able to respectfully take many of the classics in new directions.
Amazing
It's an amazing restaurant for sure!
Very interesting menu.
Indeed! There really isn't any restaurant quite like Don Angie!
excellent review reasonable price tag imo
Thank you! Yeah, the prices were very reasonable especially compared to NYC's other top Italian restaurants.
W video as always 🎉
Thank you so much!
Your opinions on the seafood restaurant in Greenpoint Brooklyn ? It’s called Greenpoint Fish and Lobster co. On the same street is the Amber steakhouse . Both are on Nassau Av in Greenpoint. I currently live in San Jose California. Born and raised on Manhattan Av next to the 3 decker restaurant . I will be visiting my hometown in May of 2024 . These two places are on my list to visit
I'm afraid that I haven't been to either of them, but I am planning on visiting Amber Steak House in the future and I'll definitely make a video of that experience, so stayed tuned. From what I hear, it seems like it's a great steakhouse.
@@Jamesnuthank you . The seafood restaurant is a block away
@@johnchojnowski3951 I'll have to check that out sometime too.
Great choice of dishes! There's too much media focus on the lasagna. Obviously they have a great menu all around.
Thank you! I know what you mean. The lasagna looks amazing, but the restaurant has a great looking menu with good variety.
5pm! It’s like catching the early bird special. Do you have low-salt options? I am fed-to-the-teeth with the decaying pretentiousness of NYC!
Che bellissimi paese amazing❤
Absolutely!
I wish you were here in Florida I miss real Italian food 😊😊😊😊😮😮😮
That was definitely a great Italian restaurant.

The meat portion is very small imo though for a main even.

Nice review. But Japanese sweet potatoes as a side dish in a Starred Italian resto? Maybe I'm gettin' old.
Thank you! The potatoes tasted good and that's what mattered the most to me.

Kinda sucks how everyone shits on the Hudson . Could you imagine how cool it would be if it was clean and swimmable? I’d be proud as hell NYer if that were the case . Anyways random thought

You should eat at Gabriel Kreuther!
That's definitely a restaurant that I want to eat at someday.
This is yummy
It was really good!
The Best! Love your vids and would really appreciate you doing a visit to Foxface Natural! Its one of my favs and would die for you to do your review of it. I think you would love it as well!
Thank you! That's a restaurant that I've been wanting to go to since they opened. I loved Foxface when it was just a sandwich shop and even filmed a video about it, but then they closed and I never completed the video. Hopefully, I'll get around to the new restaurant soon.
One and half minutes in and I’m sooo bored; a right C U next Tuesday
I hate when restaurants do no reservations for 1 it's to expensive sometimes for me to take a girl and I go by myself. Which I'll eat late like I did at Torrisi. Have you been to 4 Charles for prime rib? Not many places have it I think Smith and willensky and that's it. Haven't seen reviews online for it just there burger

24% tip? To each is own, but it's more than I would have left
While it is above the standard 20 percent, since I did get that free dessert, I didn't mind paying a little extra.
@@Jamesnu okay, that makes sense. I worked 3 months as a waiter once. Many times got 15% and more, and sometimes got good tips even after I or the cook screwed up something. I never understood that, or the diners who left a pittance after getting great service. I was always content to get at least 10%. Anything over that was a bonus.
christos in astoria!
