The 33ft 'Cobra' was built by Tough Bros on the Thames at Teddington from the early 70s. (I was the yacht-broker for Toughs in the early 70s). They also built an identical model but only 27ft called the 'Python'. The advantage of these boats was the fact that they were built incredibly strongly being hand-laid fibreglass, before builders began employing composite construction.. it was very labour intensive but very resistant to osmosis.. you should have a good hull there. Most of the Cobras were built using the Perkins 6:354 diesels, shaft driven as they were fast planing hulls. The Perkins 4.108 is a very strong, reliable diesel, easy to work on being a very basic engine, parts should still be easily available and relatively inexpensive.. and you shouldn't need many but do be careful to treat them gently before starting and revving them up.. I would add some 'Wynns' diesel oil additive prior to starting. The big question is hanging over the outdrives. Outdrives, even relatively new outdrives, are prone to problems.. if nearly new and they're working well, they won't be very soon.. it's just a fact of life with outdrives :)
@@TheBoatingBuoys As I said, most of these were fitted with the Perkins 6:354, 6 cyl engines, 145hp, also Ford 120hp engines, but they were shaft drives... It's a planing hull so most people were looking for speed.. If I remember they were expected to achieve around 22knts.. probably cruising just on the plane at around 14knts. I don't remember any of them being fitted with the 4.108 engines but they were being built before I arrived and continued after I'd moved on, it's possible that some of the 27ft Pythons were fitted with the 4,108s.. I know very little of out-drives, better to ask a marine engineer or find a Cobra blog..Unless you're looking for speed then the Perkins 4-108s would be the most economical option. You should be able to locate parts easily enough. I rebuilt a 50ft narrowboat a few years ago and had to rebuild a 1933 5ft high twin cylinder Ruston-Hornsby diesel.. If I could do that, your problem is a breeze :>) Look for a Blog. Maybe my prejudice but I think that the outdrives will be your biggest expense...and headache.
Jack I have worked with Glass -Fibre and it can be very nasty stuff, you absolutely do not want to be breathing it in while sanding if you like your lungs use a good quality face mask and eye protectors, and I usually wear double gloves (2 per hand) and the stuff still gets through.
hey that is a lot of fun. my suggestion as a semi truck driver, take the motor oil out and replace it with a good synthetic oil with one quart of dura lube and 2 quarts of lucas oil stabilizer, 1 motor sealer and 1 oil stabilizer.. this will get your motors protected from the inside for 6-700 hours and run really smooth.... i drove my semi truck for a million miles this way and my motors when I sold my truck, there were no wear at all on the cams...empty and refill the coolant for new one, test your alternator and try to start it...good luck...
Get it up here in the midlands, drop it on a trailer and get it shipped to stourport or upton on the side for the winter, theres a lot of work there but a wealth of knowlege in the area to help you out and always willing to lend a hand, been a yachtsman since birth :)
Mate you have just done something that i have been wanting to do for years, i really hope you get to enjoy the journey of your new boat, your absolutely nuts but i totally admire your passion and can’t wait to see what happens Cheers Marc from Liverpool 👍👍👍
Check center boat in side where pumps are in case leak should bit floor in cabin for a look see center boat dry on drives on right looks like need bearing for that . Good on you lot
Use star bright cleaner polish on the hull absolutely fantastic stuff cheap da polisher and a med-firm pad will bring that up like new 💪 also the marine polish is another product worth using.
Pass those ones one and get some Volvo penta stern legs. Never heard of the ones you have. I'm in NZ and we get the most reliable. 1200 quid is way cheap for what you have.😊 Well done lads....
Hello mate 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love a challenge me mate! And coming along well, having the re brand enables me more free time to do stuff like this! Wait till you see my £1 jetski 🤣🤣
I just realised I misheard the price originally and you paid like a grand less than I thought so it's an even better no brainer! I will very keenly watch this as this is actually slightly less than my own budget. Although I did find a tiny 17 ft for basically nothing that I *really* wanted but had no way (except sailing) to bring it home! :/ I could've sailed it, it was in the water & fully functional but I'm a motorer, I wanted this because the sail was tiny, almost like it was added on, and I could learn on it, but I did not want a giant (I think it was 200nm) journey as my first time properly sailing! LOL
I'm going to go in with a prediction. 10k to get it in good working order and clean and tidy inside. Another 5k in other costs over the next 12 months. Value at the end of 12 months sub 10k.
Good luck with finding another yard for a berth don't know where you are living or where your boat is now but maldon in Essex there are a few boat yards I have just subscribed to see how you get on good luck 😊
Try blowing back from the filter too tank check the lift pump is pumping.seals on fuel filter not letting air in .facet fuel pumps are the best 12v pumps
Buy an outboard around 40hp. bolt on a mount and jury rig a wire Stroop steering link, and glass over all the through hulls and your set to move it to another location where you can get it out of the water and sort out any issues with the hull. and have time to sort out your engines and props.
This is going to be fun to follow, First and foremost I would not trust ANY of those through hulls! Pull them out and replace them with modern through hulls before you ever put this old gal back into the water. I am going to guess these have shut off valves on the inboard side and you just can't trust old brass valves to work when it is essential. good luck I hope this beautiful boat sees many more nautical miles soon.
Hey Paul, Thanks for your comment, I have on my list of jobs to replace the old brass for new, and then realised I also need to replace the through hulls too! so thanks for that tip brother!

Certainly get the Enfield Bellows replaced before going back in water and also check the inlet skin valve's for any corrosion. As for the Perkins, get some to check them over and only use Mineral based Engine Oils.
