I'll be watching these videos closely! I have a 1989 340 Sundancer w/ 454s and would love to see what you do with it. I am sure you have already dug into the engines, but I had a similar ticking sound (engine running fine for the most part) and it turned out to be two bent/broken push rods! It was still running fine, which was just weird to me. In any case, need to take off the intake manifold and possibly the cylinder head (I've never done this work so it'll be interesting). Thanks for the video and insights.
Hey Ben, congratulations with your purchase...I love boats from the late 80s .Hope to see a lot of videos about the Sea Ray and also the Cobalt project.
Those 'twigs" up on the bow pulpit are screwed into the core. It is always wet there. Also beware, just ahead of the windshield on the starboard side there is often a hole for some reason that wicks water. It travels in the core which is balsa to the nearest pin hole and stains the roof material on the salon ceiling. Also the bilge scuppers are drilled and just quickly painted. If you have any standing water it rots the stringers. The good news is the hull is solid. The bad is those prop tunnels make it hard to turn.
Hey Ben, I just bought almost the same boat; mine is an '87 Sea Ray 34 Sedan Bridge so I have a house on top but below deck it's pretty much the same. Watching your video was like re-living my first day with the boat 😂. My stbd engine is blown so it will be coming out this winter for a rebuild. Look forward to seeing more content about a Toucha Class and if you need to compare notes or documentation feel free to message. Cheers
At some point the port engine has ingested water in the engine oil. Maybe for the reason the intake and or exhaust manifolds were not in stalled correctly. This boat has no heat exchanger and so losing water into the engine internals will go unnoticed.
Great content!!! Keep posting the fix'er upper stuff. I just picked up a 27' Sportcraft with a single inboard Mercruiser. I'm gonna need these videos. LOL
SUGGESTION...just found ur channel znd love the vid. Can you slow down swinging the camera around so quickly. Youre not staying on a section with the camera so we can see the boat. The spinning and camera jerks are nauseating. Thx. Look forward to more.
One other problem is the transom door sticks out past the swim platform so if you have the door open and your back into your slip, you’ll damage your door against the dock
First time viewer, and love your channel. You got a new sub. looking forward to part two. Oh, btw, did anyone ever tell you that you look like a younger Chris Young? lol
Hello, you mentioned something about zinc in the oil for older engines. I have a 89 5.8L cobra and a 2001 5.7L Volvo penta gsi do these need zinc and what oil brand would be the best. I use mercury four stroke 25w-40 conventional. This is what my local marina told me to use. I’m located in the north east
Hi yes, flat tappet valve train systems require zinc and other additives not usually found in modern oils. Valvoline VR1 racing oil has the correct additive package for these older engines. Being a 5.8, that's likely a Ford engine. I am unfamiliar with the valve train setup on the Fords unfortunately. Your 2001 should have hydraulic lifters and roller cam. This setup does not require zinc, but always check the engine serial number to be sure. That 25w40 is good oil. Thanks for watching!
@ what oil viscosity do you use with the valvoline. I only see they have a 20w-50. Would that be ok for the 89 5.8l because I am using the 25w-40 like mentioned in previous comment? Also does it matter if it’s not marine oil?
As a retired Boat Mechanic, I can tell you that’s a very difficult boat to work on
I've worked on worse.... Thanks for watching!
@pepperwatson7784 makes my back hurt just watching him 😆

I owned the exact same model and color. It IS a VERY roomy boat and fun to run fast!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! More to come
Looking forward to these vids I want to buy something like that one day when I have more free time to tinker with.
Great boat. I have an 88 Sundancer on Lake Erie. Great ride! Take care of those 7.4's
Thanks! Will do!

get seasick watching this!
Quicksilver Generator is a very very good generator and extremely quiet

Those sedan bridge SeaRays are amazing! Love the cave-feeling cabin inside. Thanks for stopping by!

SR340 EC Amazing boat and a great cruiser. They do have a history of stringer problems but they aren’t brand new anymore.
Thanks for the heads up. She seems real solid
Ahh have two Mercruiser 7.4l very good reliable engines. Always warm them up slowly and be gentle on revs:)
Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
Great content!!! Keep posting the fix'er upper stuff. I just picked up a 27' Sportcraft with a single inboard Mercruiser. I'm gonna need these videos. LOL
Thanks for watching! Those Sportctafts are nice boats.
Stick around for more!
Omg stop swinging the camera so fast,I'm getting seasick 😂😂
Not to harp on the dude but the finger pointing when he was talking was annoying then I noticed the camera swing an thought chill out turbo

Dam you waffle on lad
Merci beaucoup ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks for stopping by! That's a new one; He definitely sings better than I 😅
impressive how you knew it was the timing!!
Spend enough time around these things and your senses become valuable tools 👍
That looks like a really nice boat. But perhaps steal a fuel truck somewhere to operate it 😂
Gonna be pricey for sure
Thanks for watching!
I'm always looking for videos of fixing up old boats, and Ben you do it well.
Thank you! More to come
Tapping is oil pressure. Check oil filters.
These boats have cored hulls so check for soft areas
Thanks for the heads up! She seems solid for now 👍
Those engines came with flat tappet hydraulic camshafts, not solid roller lifters !!
That or they didn’t set the valves properly and it will be a easy fix just adjust the valve lash 👍

its a GAS DOCK to GAS DOCK boat... when you get to your location..gas dock, when you get home ... gas dock...
Hang out the carbs for the new fuel injected Holly’s
NICE hope your rich tho
I really wanted to see this video but the camera moving around like that was giving me a headache...
Same here, it's obvious he's an amateur
You didn’t mention how much you purchased the boat for. Give us numbers?
I was going to watch this but the camera being on a fishing pole i can't!!!
Let me know when the next video is released incase i miss it
Stick around for part 2... Coming soon!
check valves and timing
You really need to work on the steady camera thing.
I guess if I hazard a 1 mile per gallon estimate I would be that if you have to ask what are you doing on board guy.
What variant of light other than electric is there ?
Candle of course!
Slow the camera movement please
Sorry, I would have liked to follow, but I can not keep up with the fast moving camara
You need a smother camera work. You move too fast.
These old SeaRays are brick shithouses
Less than 3 mins in and already dizzy from you swinging your camera around, barely pausing so we can look at what you are showing us.........
