You know what I really, really miss from zone 8? Plums. We had over an acre and had 9 plum trees. They were fat and purple and that's all I know. However, here we are in zone 9B and I miss plums. Other than Loquat, what plumbs grow well here? You got any? Also, concerning fertilizer!!! As I move on to my third year doing this fun stuff, I'm beginning to realize how smart and how necessary it was that I, just for the hell of it, took a soil sample (one quart) to Home Depot and had them send it off for analysis for $15. pH was the lesson learned. So long as soil pH is close to 7.0 (6.8 - 7.2), you got no worries. Outside of that, things get wonky. Minerals, NPK and so forth can't be absorbed no matter how much you have. Also, leaves laid 18" on top of my woodchip base make a BETTER fertilizer than 10-10-10.

I do know someone who told me they were growing plums here is Central Florida. I believe just like the Florida Prince peach tree, they are developed for Florida and need much less chill hours than plums that grow up north. I can't remember where the tree was purchased from. I am thinking of switching to wood chips from the red mulch soon. Wood chips from what I hear feeds the trees like a fertlizer.

@@tropicalfruitman4394 The "new for me" concerning mulch is "yard waste leaves". I put down 18" - 24" of woodchips over my 1/2 acre. The Trees were all planted before that, in 50/50 black cow and native sand (soil). This year, I started literally pouring contractor bags of free yard waste oak, pine, maple and whatever leaves, along with grass clippings. They compost much faster and bleed through the woodchips. The fungal layer became intense, which is excellent. The trees are a deep green with zero diseases or problems this year. The only problem now is, no more leaves in the yard waste. It only lasts Feb - early April.

I've got a couple of them. Got seeds from a friend down in Brazil. But they kept dying down to the ground and coming back. Citrus county, Florida. Finally in pots they are growing like weeds. Can't wait to taste the cherries.

I got mine already in pots so they took off pretty fast. Good luck, you will love the fruit.

I like the idea of trying out two different planting locations to find the one that thrives most. Thanks for sharing your insights. Do you grow Goji Berry too?

Yea, I've actually moved a few trees to another location and watched it thrive after the move. No Goji berries.. not yet but who knows...
