A fyi on Sabatons live performances. The Great Tour lives are all filmed from the back looking out on the crowd. However many will probably recommend "Livstid I krig" Gothenburg which is also filmed like this, that one is definitely worth watching.

Great review, get your issues with the stage camera review, however, agree with Livstid I krig, turn on English so you can read the story and agree, the view of the crowd on this song and story, in my opinion,is the best view for this specific song.

I must also agree with this post. The sweedish version of En livstid I Krig with English subtitles. The quality is substantially better. Once again, I appreciate the honest reaction and I agree the live video for Bismarck was not great.

I personally am a huge fan of the Great Tour videos, they are all filmed just like that and shot at multiple tour stops. However, I love that you weren’t afraid to say fuck no to it, added a authentic touch. En Livstid I Krig filmed from the same performance kinda gives what I think is the bands reasoning for filming that way, you get a sense of the crowds emotion. But either way, love the content, keep’’em rollin

    • @PittDaddy
      @PittDaddy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Definitely watch the suggested video, En Livstid I Krig, in the live version. It is filmed like this, but on that one, it makes the song more impactful.

    • @IlkkaPrusi
      @IlkkaPrusi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It is one thing if you expect to see and hear a band playing and another if you hope to see crowds reactions. The latter part might work as extra material or altenate angle of the same performance but it is usually for fans who already have seen and heard the actual performance. Material for fans is a different experience entirely and I agree with ignoring it. I think there are much better videos that introduce the band in a better way. I also think they have better songs than this but maybe that's my opinion..

  • @davidcoyne7291

I agree it was a weird way to film the live show but if you do the song 'En livstid i krig' live it really works for that song and makes the performance even more powerful.

Jeez XD that one needed some help. There's literally ONE shot from the back like that I recommend, and that's because of how much the crowd's getting into it - if you see the live one David;'s talking about (th-cam.com/video/WBs3G1PvyfM/w-d-xo.html ) , that one's worth a watch (USE THE SUBTITLES THOUGH!! The meaning of the words is important!) This one was just sad. Trust me, there's something incredibly beautiful in the simplicity of that specific one...you'll understand.

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

The Great Tour videos were not made for DVD. They were short clips, one from each concert, showing the gig from the band's point of view. Intended as a sort of "behind the scene" and released as teasers for the tour. If you want to see a real concert video with Sabaton, look for Woodstock.

  • @NetAndyCz
    @NetAndyCz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Bismark is a great music and a video. Lots of Sabaton videos get more powerful after you actually study the relevant history and can appreciate the little details they managed to get in. It is not 100% historically accurate, but it is usually pretty close. On the upside, Sabaton made me learn more about the 20th century history than school. And the lyrics get more impressive as well.
It is okay to watch Sabaton live, but for some songs I think the music video provides a much better experience.

    Hi Eric.
From what I understood from other comments, the boat captain is the son of the last suvivor of the Bismark crew (which died too, but he was the last one). This is also why you can see some Bismarck memorabilia at the beginning of the video, when the band enters his office.

Okay, so maybe the Live video from The Great Tour wasn't the best one for this song, I can agree on that. The Sabaton fans have seen millions of videos in the regular format, shot from the front as per normal, so seeing it from the bands perspective is rather unusual and we don't see much of that. I for one think it's interesting to get that Reverse Angle in The Great Tour videos, but I can understand if it's not everyone's cup of tea.
There are other videos - like the Swedish version of "A Lifetime At War" ("En Livstid I Krig") in Gothenburg during the same Tour - that gives the viewer a better feeling of what it's like for the band when the crowd starts interacting with them and the song.
There are plenty of videos on TH-cam if you want to see Sabaton performing Live in front of a big crowd at music festivals around Europe, "Ghost Division" at Pol-N-Rock (Polish Woodstock) in 2012 in front of a really huge crowd (650.000+), or why not "Swedish Pagans" Live at Wacken 2019 with the Cellist Tina Guo as Guest Artist. It was Sabaton's 20 year anniversary so they played on 2 stages with current band members on one stage and former members on the other one. Cheers / B.

I'm glad that you was happy with the video at the end :-) I don't mind at all the back camera in their two songs: En Livstid I Krig Gothenburg and The Red Baron Berlin. Other songs have got their better versions in my opinion.
Sabaton would never treat their fans disrespectfully selling them s... They made Bismarck videoclip especially for their fans putting it on the Iternet for free not selling, as a thank you in 2019 for their 20 years together - they love fans! :-) They never block their videos (unless Wacken). They started History Channel to explain more to everyone listening to the song what it is about. They used to give 150 concerts per year so there are also many fan made videos online of not so good quality. I hope for more Sabaton in the future on your channel 🙂

First time I even heard a Sabaton song was when I saw them open for Nightwish on the Endless Forms Most Beautiful tour in Orlando. I was completely blown away by their energy on stage and became an instant fan. The sad part is that live energy does not translate well when the production crew is lacking. Hi Eric, I don't mind your criticism of the video shot from behind at all. Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion. What upset me, however, is that you assumed that they were trying to be cheap and failed at producing a high-quality video of the live show. The band has been around for more than 20 years and they put a lot of effort into their stage productions. So I am very sure that they thought this through and wanted to film the shows this way. To me, these videos are kind of the equivalents of the group shots that bands take at the end of the concerts with the audience in the background. If you were at one of their shows you were waiting for the video recorded in your city. Through the videos, you could see how the band experienced the concert in your city. I'm convinced it was never meant to replace a proper concert film but to get you as close to the band as possible. And in my opinion, this is exactly what they accomplished with these videos.

Live performances of Sabaton in my humble opinion are all great, understand your opinion and it’s fair. Check out 40-1 Woodstock, Poland or Sabaton Swedish Pagans, Live at Wacken Open Air 2019. Also check out the animated story video of No Bullets Fly, it’s a combination of Sabaton History and Music video. Trust this old metalhead you need to see the video to the end. Sound quality is great but the backstory continues of the power of Sabaton’s mantra, “Lest We Forget.” Great job as always, hopefully this old Metal Neanderthal won’t let you down in my suggestions. Your right about the animation being okay but I feel the sound quality is good, and it’s not only a great history lesson but a even better human interest story of foes in war. @@yoeriw7099 thank you for the information, I personally like Sabaton’s whole package of storytelling, music, lyrics, history, Live, animated, great CGI, etc! Hopefully Rock Radio DJ will give the animated versions a chance. The music is from the studio and is good quality. His reaction to the live version of Bismarck was in my opinion fair, the sound & video quality is sub par. But I’m afraid the suggestions for En Livid I Krig from Gothenburg although amazing but it is also shot from back of stage looking out into the crowd but the sound & video is better, he won’t give it a chance. So my only hope is that so far he’s reaction to new bands have been fair, knowledgeable but the way he reacted to Live Bismarck and lashed out at a Sabaton fan stunned me! I only hope he gives these others a try and not paint all filmed from stage or animated as not worthy a look! One can only try right? From a very old Metal/rock head thanks for the information! Hi,
New subscriber here. Love your content. I watched your reaction of christmas truce, i hadn't listened to it fully because well, I have a dip in my depression and it sort of got to be too much so I just haven't been able to listen to the whole song. but watching your reaction made it easier finally I heard the whole song.
I am a Sabaton fan, I went to see them here in Sweden on the great tour and it was my first metal concert just before covid hit. It was one of those highlights of my life, a very powerful and amazing experience. Can't say I understand the choice of filming from behind the band either tbh, i do know they had a camera in front because they livestreamed some of the concerts. I do understand though for a lifetime of war/ en livstid i krig.
Anyway I am happy you went for the musicvideo instead, it is so well made and you get to see Joakims movements, he is a powerful frontman and quite the storyteller.
I was also very happy that Apocalyptica was with them on this tour and came in and played with them on quite a few songs.
I think some of the older Sabaton songs that are still in their repertoire would be interesting for you to listen to, I'm thinking Ghost division ( they open a lot of their concerts with that one) and Primo victoria. Also, Carolus Rex. The last one is from the Carolus rex album that contains songs about swedish kings, i wish these songs existed when I went to school :D
This is getting a bit long, but I want to say that I really enjoy your reactions and I will keep on watching. Thank you so much, take care and stay safe

The tour video looked experimental. To me that looked like a bonus clip on a DVD, "Click on this to see your favourite song! But this time from the band's perspective watching you guys!!!!" Or something like that.
Bismarck is a great song and I'm glad you got to enjoy it.
Since we're on a Sabaton kick right now - and I know you like the movie Gallipoli - can I recommend you 'Cliffs of Gallipoli', amazing song. Somehow they managed to entwine Mustafa Ataturk's famous " You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away..." speech into the lyrics of the song!

    Hi Eric!
Glad you finally saw the official music video, it is indeed super high production quality.
They made it with the help of the guys from World of Tanks and World of Warships.
About the live video: for what I remember, that tour was filmed that way and released almost the following day, for each date! It was more like a "if you missed it, here it is".
It was not made like a normal dvd, where they choose one date of the tour and go all hells blazing that day. The production on the stage, the flames, that's in every show (in europe).
When I saw them here in Chile, of course they couldn't fly with that much stuff, so no special props, but the energy was the same :)

I absolutely loved that. I admire Your sincerity and boldness when it was "screw that - I'm gonna watch better video". You are one of the few "cats" on the TH-cam scene that I really enjoy watching - and I do it especially for the detailed analysis of the music, production etc. I enjoyed Your longest videos to the point the most ;)
What happened with Your stage setup? I miss the ads for Dental and 200Connect. I do understand that they may be gone for reasons - but these two new videos are... Hm. Less nostalgic? If that makes any sense. I loved this setup, the colors, the logos - they were bringing me back to the old days when some of radio shows and call in shows were happening on TV in my country. I understand that this aesthetics is not everyone's cup of tea - but at least as soon as Your video started playing I knew where I am and what to expect. These two new videos (especially one fo UTA) are bland in comparison with Your earlier works. I hope that this is just a phase or something even less important. Also - I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy them - as I did - but they are really different.
ALso - I do love Your stories, how You connect with music emotionally. Maybe don't choose music based on vote counts - but on Your gut feeling. I'm sure as hell that Your gut after being a dj for 30 years in city of Music can't be wrong too often.
    Love from Poland!

I'm one of those that love this angle, we have seen the normal angle(s) thousands of times from different bands, but this is, I think, the only time I have seen the show from the bands view. And I think that is the way it's meant, you are not meant to see the backs of the band, you are meant to be one with the band. And during some shows it works perfectly with the bandmembers playing along with the photographer as if he was the third guitarist or something.
But I do understand it can be offputting, especially if you have not seen Sabaton live before, then I understand the notion that you want to see the band "properly".
But also, in this case with Bismarck, it should be considered a crime not to do the original video..
And in that case, I would suggest "Ghost division" from Woodstock. Great performance even if the audio isn't perfect.

If you have been to one of their shows you kind of get to see their performance from both sides which is really cool. It’s more vlog style than a concert video. A behind the scenes type thing. I totally agree the upstage single camera does not work for Bismarck.
However, I would absolutely recommend Sabaton's En Livstid i Krig live from Gothenburg. It's filmed from upstage like this video, but it makes more sense as the audience participation really is off the hook. Which would probably not come forward if they made it any other way. Make sure to have the captions on. A very powerful performance.

For a live video, definitely check out 40-1 at Woodstock Poland. You will get a much better feel of the impact of the band in concert. The audience was 500,000 strong.
Another great live video would be Swedish Pagans - Live at Wacken Open Air 2019. In that one, they have old members of the band on stage and they use BOTH main stages at once for the performance. Plus the audio from anyone's Wacken show is fantastic.

If you're continuing with the Sabaton journey, I'd highly recommend a couple of the YarnHub produced animated videos, they provide a short animated story introduction to provide an insight into the meaning of the song, as well as an animated music video showing the given story. Night Witches and No Bullets Fly are the two main recommendations. I think you will enjoy the videos as well as the music here.
For music videos themselves (not live from the rear end! :D ) I'd suggest their recent release of Soldier of Heaven as well as Fields of Verdun, two of my personal favs. Hope you enjoy and looking forward to more.

I suspect - and I'll admit this is a guess - they filmed the live video from that angle because of positive feedback from their live In Livstid I Krig video which was a POWERFUL event and seeing the crowd did benefit that video. I'd even recommend it, (with subtitle captions) but that's because of the way that particular event turned out, not as an example of the band performing that song.

They filmed every song from the tour that way, and released one song each week. One week it was, for example Ghost Division from London, next week it was 82nd all the way from Oslo.

I have to agree about the first video. I used the Sabaton videos and their history channel to homeschool my teen for his Grade 11 year. Superb to be able to provide a detailed viewpoint from outside the North American bias. I love "40:1" but equally "Night Witches" and "The Last Stand" are favourites.

I really wish Sabaton would finally put in some effort to really improve their live recording quality. Video is mostly fine, but the audio is an absolute crapshoot.
the Stage angle was a stylistic choice for the great tour. I suppose a „proper“ multi cam setup would have been too much effort, since they didn‘t record the entire set at one Show, but rather spread out through the shows. Some of them are great, livstid i krig in Gothenburg comes to mind, but most not so much.

Isn't The Great Tour song videos little "snippets" cut out from the Live Streams from the Concerts?
For those who have no idea of what I'm talking about - If you subscribed to Sabaton's channel, about 10 minutes before the start of every concert you got an email with a link to a YT Live-Stream from that Concert. I think the streams could be viewed for 48 hours after the Concert and after that they were deleted, so they are no longer available. / B.

Love the idea of using their videos in schools.
The move of pounding the knee, is the signature move of Till Lindemann of Rammstein. It's called The Hammer. He began doing it early on, when he dislocated hid knee b4 a show so he kept punching it to pop it back into place...crowd loved it, so he still does it. Yes, he does really *punch* himself til hes bruised.

Great reaction this time as well. I'll really appriciate your views, the seem well thought trough. I also share your view about the view from the live concert in Hamburg. Don't get the band the appreciation they deserve. To film a rock consert from behind isn't easy I suppose.
Whith that said though, I would still recommened you to watch their song "En livstid i krig", the swedish version, from their concert in Gothemburg in Sweden in 2021 (I think it was). This appearance is also filmed from behind, but if you watch it you see why. The spectators play a big roll in the show and it's so great to watch them. Ok, I'm from Sweden and biased, but anyway.
Maybe that's what they expected in Hamburg too? You know, Bismark, the beast of the seven seas and all.

It's a banger of a song and I agree with the lack of cameras. I mean, unless it's a band you are passionate about, cant even get an over priced ticket from stub hub and will sit behind the band if I have to, the "from behind shot doesn't do anyone justice. However, I don't think it was a "let's mess with this guy" moment. Some people just have severely different tastes when it comes to videos.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this so I just drop this here, why the great tour live shows are filmed like that was particularly due to the pandemic and that they at the same time had live shows online (a bit last minute) to connect with people during that time. And then later just kept some of the clips to upload from different stops.

"The last battle of the German battleship Bismarck took place in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 300 nautical miles (560 km; 350 mi) west of Brest, France, on 26-27 May 1941 between the German battleship Bismarck and naval and air elements of the British Royal Navy."

From a fan's perspective it's easier to already have a feel of that song and how the band performs and at what quality, so they don't empathize correctly with a person that reacts for the first time with that song in special and just dabbed a little in that band. Most people have pointed out that the recording you watched at first was intended just as a vlog/behind the scenes kind of thing. However, unless my ADHD is acting up more than usual, I think no one has mentioned that there is an actual DVD of this tour, which came out recently. From that DVD the band uploaded on their channel this rendition of Swedish Pagans, a fan favorite: th-cam.com/video/kvJo3UF1KN8/w-d-xo.html
(Much better production value, right? Also you can see a bit of the stage shenanigans these guys are infamous for, lmao)

Also - 82nd all the Way with Amaranthe - it's recorded the same way - but the sound is much clearer, and cameraman knows better what he is doing there. There is of course studio recording of it.
What I also want to say that It is a "bold" artistic decision to film a live show that way - and in the clip with Amaranthe it pays off more or less (only after watching your review realized what was different about the camera work.... I'm dumb sometimes). But yeah - recording a whole tour that way - it goes from "bold artistic decision" to "rather stupid artistic decision" really fast. I think they gambled - and it definitely didn't pay off.

I appreciate your honest reaction!🤘 If you will give their live stuff another shot, I recommend "Fields of Verdun" (Great Show, Prague, 2020), "Angels Calling" feat. Apocalyptica (Great Show, Prague, 2020), "Uprising" (live from Woodstock, Poland, 2012) and "Ghost Division" (Official live, Woodstock, Poland, 2012). The footage is from the crowd's perspective, all of them.
I understand that you don't like chanting, so "Swedish Pagans" is out of the question in this case...

Hi Eric! I agree with your comments on the original video --- the second one is the one I always understood to be the common video to watch. Two small subsidiary comments on "video selection": 1) almost ALL Nightwish recommendations are good; not just Gabriel's, but everyone's. I personally recommend just staying away from the South America or Vancouver versions of their live shows, but I believe my position is sound on that issue. 2) The band with the MOST controversy on which videos to watch, especially of live shows, is RAMMSTEIN. Personally (my opinion only) I do NOT recommend any of their "Live in Paris" videos, which were all shot in black & white, over-produced, and now in any event outdated with the advent of their new "Stadium Tour 2019" shows. There ARE pro-shot videos of that show by fans of the band that are pro videographers, but you have to know where to find them, and some have been blocked in the past, but I know which ones are still available. Some "Official" Rammstein videos are good, but some are not, and some (e.g. the Official "Stripped" video) are controversial. Best is "Deutschland", which I am sure you will get to eventually. Anyway, most important is I love your absolutely honest and articulate opinion. Keep it up! Keep well ...

"I want my Tears back" from buenos aires is actually the best performance of the song they EVER did on camera.
I have more Issues with People suggesting Tampere as the location for "the greatest show on earth" instead of the way better quality version from wembley arena.
There's only 1 feature in Tampere not in the other show, (the "bang") but there are some features in wembley not in tampere, (namely the "man" or the e-bow).
My assumption is, that a lot (not all) of the people suggesting Tampere have never seen the wembley version. Same with Buenos Aires.

@@ToTheWolves I don't have anything against Tampere as itself. The Islander for example is amazing in Tampere. But for TGSOE, it's Open Air, during daylight and nightwish concerts don't feel good without a good amount of atmospheric "dim" so to speak. Imagine Poet&Pendulum Open Air during "Breakfast-Time" at like 9.30 AM compared to the feeling the same performance would get in a dark Indoor-Arena with all the Light-Effects at the same time of 9.30 AM xD
the "Bang" is probably really the only cool thing about this specific performance and I enjoy it everytime I see it gets reacted to, but the almost "religious" ending in Wembley gets me chills every time. =D
