  • What are the differences between Show Dobermans, Working or Sport Dobermans, and Pet Dobermans? These are the main behavioral and health differences between these three Doberman types. If you don't know which type of Doberman you should get, this video is for you! Luckily, the Doberman is an extremely versatile dog and it can fit into a variety of roles easily. Even so, most breeders out there breed for a specific type of Doberman. Either a Show Doberman, Working/Sport Doberman, or a Pet Doberman. Here's what you can expect from each of these!

I'm from Germany and have a working dobermann. I'm walking/training her 3-4 hours a day she is so powerful. I agree, she is more stubborn and more emo than my last doberman, she doesn't want to cuddle all the time like my maledobi. Because she has a job, she has to protect me, the house, the garden....the whole street🤣🤣🤣

I agree... "working line Dobermanns", once they know your personality...sometimes will stop (or relax) with all the clinging behavior. they may find a few spots where they can watch you - from a distance and still guard the house, look out windows or take their favorite 'chew toy' to play with.
one ear up (on radar sweep). they are still "On duty" - even if they look like they are 1/2 asleep. If you move...they will be up in seconds.

John is such a humble guy, but really when watching his videos one must realize that he is truly a subject matter expert on the topic of Doberman pinschers. I only wish that I had his advice four years ago because it truly helps the novice select the right type of Doberman Pinscher. I was fortunate in that the b**** that I received was a show dog that was not selected for show because of her slightly different temperament and marginally deformed left ear. It's quite difficult to notice unless the trained eye looks at the animal. But again, here John demonstrates his comprehensive knowledge and expertise of the breed; my Doberman is a highly excellent pet as they show dog that was never exhibited. Demonstrating all of the traits that Dobermans are well known with an excellent reputation for such as loyalty, love, companionship, protection, over the top intelligence and fairly high energy level. Thanks so much again John for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us on this truly best breed. Take care.

@@rtv3801 I always say that her childhood took months off our lives 😂 It was almost insane. She whines when she see's agility setup or places where she can chase the ball and has an extremely low boredom threshold. They're smart, which is great. Horrifying too. Sometimes I listen to people who have a Bernese or something similar and I envy them a bit but I wouldn't want it otherwise in reality.

A well trained - centered Dobermann Pinscher , seems - to bring up 'memories' of dogs they have owned in the past, dog owned by neighbors, friends, relatives etc..from passers-by, especially if your dog is healthy... nothing stands out as much as a Dobermann Pinscher, which is well groomed - well behaved - and attentive to it human (owner, person).
The problem comes from other dogs who over-react....seems like some of them hate being ignored...start barking and hiding behind or scramble to hide behind their owners legs? If your Dobermann respects you... its not a problem.

Don't forget to train shot resistance so they get used to gunshots, rattles from chains, a flapping piece of cloth, etc. They must absolutely not run away from such challenges but must ignore them. Then you have a Dobermann to trust if something serious were to occur.

Bravo! Great video! I’m in the sport Doberman world. Just got my 11 week old male from Croatia. I found this breeder sometime last year and she breeds show and working lines. I had to wait a year for the puppy that was going to be part of our working family. I look for longevity in the lines and of course working ability. Most people that breed working lines also normally have a couple of puppies that do not have the drive and additude to be a sport dog. They are sold as pet dogs. I had show dogs years ago. Most breeders that have working lines require you to title the puppy, to get breeding rights they sell their pets with limited registration.

Great information, I have two 7 month old pups and yes exercise is the most important thing with them. They get so much exercise on our small farm and having each other helps a ton, plus both pups have chores they do each day. 🤙🏻

When I first saw your channel, I spent a weekend binge watching your videos. I now watch your new videos every Sunday. I have learned so much about the breed.
I had a doberman when I was in 8th grade. This was in the early 1980's. I was in dental school when She passed away 15 years later. As. an adult, I have always worked extremely long hours and knew I could not devote the proper time to care for a dog. I have always just kept family members dogs from time to time to help make up for the fact that I did not have a dog of my own. I will retire in the next 2 years, and I plan to get a doberman. I have been researching and also following some online forums to educate myself on training and proper doberman care.
I see lots of people online discussing training and behavior problems. I wonder sometimes if the breed has changed. We never did any formal training, but she was always well behaved. I had never heard of the term "Velcro Doberman." When I see old family photos, I do notice that she is usually leaning on my dad. I guess he was her major person, but she was so loving to everyone that It never occurred to any of us that she may have been more attached to any one family member.
She just picked up on the idea that using the bathroom outside was better than inside. She did occasionally have an "accident' inside. She would always alert my mom that this had happened. My mom would usually clean this up, and our doberman would watch her clean up. My mom would always hug her and tell her how good she was for letting us know. My mom did not ever want her to feel bad for using the bathroom inside. I am surprised that our dobie did not read this as encouragement to continue to go inside. This only happened a handful of times.
With the challenges I see online related to doberman behavior, I sometimes wonder if the breed has changed over the years. I do plan on educating myself on proper training so I will be prepared when I do get a doberman.
Another thing. I do not know If our doberman was an American or a European variety. My dad bought her from a local business that sold "Protection Dogs." He paid $100 She was 2 months old had been cropped. She was malnourished covered with fleas and ticks and had infected ears with embedded non resorbable sutures.
As an adult, she was a medium sized dog, an weighed about 50 to 60 pounds. I am not sure if some breeders breed for this smaller size. She was the perfect size.

I assume the female is likely the aggressor? litter mates who are male female will tend to develop gender traits where the female expects the male defer to her. His job is to handle the stuff outside the den. he probably still thinks he is the Alpha, because of the size difference. which leaves her with the only option... to ramp up her display.
It would be easier if the pair were from different litters.
I've seen this behavior in mating pairs, where the female will not let the male anywhere near her pups .... until she is sure of his intentions.

If you don't work your dog in any way, only with receiving daily walks, nothing too intense and he is a moderately well behaved dog, you have a pet Doberman. If on the other hand your dog is out of control, always trying to bite things, and restless (even when you have done your part in being a good knowledgeable leader) you might have a sporting Doberman. Unless you are working your Doberman, and he is able to do it, then he will be well behaved in the house because he has his needs met (but i assume that anyone wondering this question doesn't have their Doberman working, or they wouldn't need to ask). Basically the working (sporting) Doberman needs a lot more exercise and mental stimulation than most other Dobies. Even the pet ones need exercise or they will become destructive, but working lines need a lot more or they will be a nightmare. So if you feel like your Doberman has a lot more exercise and mental simulation requirements than other Dobermans, you could have a sporting/working Doberman, but if he is out of his crazy puppy stage and mostly chill with a walk or two a day then he is probably a pet.

I've had 3 dobermans in my life, the first one was Flash (my father was his master) and he was the only one that died of old age, every Thursday evening we watched Star Trek together on BBC 2. The second one was a brown goofball I got from my uncle, the runt of the litter who became a his namesake Conan, he died from cancer 6 years later. The last one was a very sad story, Matrix was full of energy, exceptionally loving doggo, but developed a nasty hip problem very early, at 4 with the help of the vet, we fixed him with wheels and at 5... he couldn't find any position where the pain wasn't manageable. After that, I went for a Malinois, and when he died of old age... I didn't have the strength to go trough that again. All those dogs were high energy, "dominant" dogs, but never ever did I have any problems, with children or other dogs... Definitely listen to John’s advice on exercise! If you don’t have a way to get your Dobie exhausted a few times a week, you will have problems! Conversely, if you are having problems (training, anxiety, reactive/aggressive, etc.) increase the activity level. In my household, a tired Doberman is a happy Doberman!

I have a working European Dobermann and I can say with absolute certainty that they can be a handful. Wonderful dog, and the best dog I have ever had but he can be a nightmare! He is very well trained, very calm and kind with all people and animals; HOWEVER, if it is in HIS yard or near HIS house, or HIS car, if it moves it dies. He is a godless killing machine with no sense of self preservation. Broken teeth from going after and killing rats/birds, full TPLO on both knees... his injury list is very long and all self-inflicted. All this being said, he is incredibly kind, caring, loving, and just wants to cuddle any chance he gets. 130 pounds of pure love and destruction. :)

Your Dobermann is your best friend and companion and should follow to your office and all your daily occupation then you will have nice dog. Just like humans, they become mentally fatigued from constantly experiencing new environments and challenges, which makes them tired after a full day's work. That´s how you get happy dog. 😊

Why would a larger doberman be better for sport? I've never seen any super large dogs doing work in military or policing... Xl doesn't seem like the way to go.

    • @JustinAEgan
      @JustinAEgan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Larger .... can mean different things to different people...different situations.
stronger bone structures, more robust joints... larger chests (for better breathing when in stressful situations) doesn't mean looking for 130lb dobermanns! for field work.
A dog being used as a security on fences...is not the same dog you might want, if you were jumping out of a helicopter, scampering up mountains.
However, in both cases you may want a versatile, fast manageable - trusted dog...a man stopper, who follows commands... as well as is able to anticipate taking action.
From what I've been seeing, reading about. Many police dogs are unreliable ...because their "handlers" think they know better than the original breeder/trainer. If the handler doesn't believe in his dog... then the dog is 'wasted'.

When training a large breed, what kind of training reinforcement is best: just positive reinforcement or is a physical correction ever applied? I've only ever used positive reinforcement but also have only owned small breeds. I have always wondered what an 'experienced' owner for a strong willed powerful breed implies. Thanks in advance for any answers!😜

  • @NiinaSKlove

Very interesting and a tad confusing... So, if you are going to use a working Doberman as a service dog - and the person who owns the service dog can't take the dog out for, say, an hour-long walk twice a day - how will the dog do then? If instead, the service dog has tasks, like typical service dog tasks, for example. And the owner can take the dog for half an hour walk, twice a day - would that be okay?
    - Will the working Doberman feel like it doesn't get enough energy outlets, so to speak? Or is it okay that it just gets different (mental and physical) ways of letting out all that energy? What if the person needing the service dog is a first-time owner (of a dog in general)? Is it okay if that person has taken the time to learn about the Doberman breed and dog behavior/dog training (both specific for the Doberman and dogs in general) to get a Doberman? How does that work?
    - To sum it up: if a Doberman owner gives the Doberman different tasks (around the house, outdoors on walks, etc.) and takes the dog for about half an hour of walks twice a day, will that be good enough for a working Doberman? ☺- Great video as always. I love watching your videos and learning new things about the Doberman breed!! 😎

I’m not an expert but there are also other ways to to burn off their energy. He made a video of 7 ways to exercise your dobie for lazy people. Not that you’re lazy, that’s just the name of the video. There’s dog safe bubbles you can add to a machine and they’ll chase those around. Or supervised on a treadmill. Puzzle toys are also good.

Great to see! My Dobermann was an interest of a family friend since they compete in shows. It was nice getting some tips every now and then, but it’s also cool to see how we would raise our Dobermans differently according to lifestyle since my Raya is a pet while my cousin who has Raya’s brother is a working Doberman :D

@@murielsherwood5380 by your standards a pitbull would be better than a shep. Your splitting hairs. A lighter dog is gonna have less impact on on their joints... ever seen a malinois? Def not a heavy thick headed dog.

    • @murielsherwood5380
      @murielsherwood5380 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@timmyadam3542 oh please get over yourself, talk about splitting hairs, it's not my opinion but the opinion of those involved in the sport. Do your research, malinois and other breeds are a totally different story. If you research you will find American breeders will import European dobermans but not vice versa. It is to do with the American show breed not being strong enough for IPO. Don't take it personally. The lighter breed is also more manageable and better for families or pets as DP video shows. All dogs are beautiful, amazing and man's best friend.
