Remember: this game was the first official version of Sonic 1 that included the Spin Dash. (In the original, all you could do was roll forward, and have to run from afar to pass loops)
@@julienducret8090 That's why Sonic 2 and later games have zones you can just run through more easily (instead of having a lot of slow-paced levels like Marble and Labyrinth. Zones like this still exist throughout the series, but they are spread out more and slightly less difficult)
Sonic World was actually the development work that was done for Sonic Adventure that ended up being released on the Dreamcast. (Even the camera that follows you as you get dropped into a level is the same aspect ratio and angle.) The team started developing a version of the game on the Saturn before switching to developing for the Dreamcast. (I believe this change was as the Saturn tanked). They were proud of what they had achieved with regards to making Sonic into a 3D game and felt it would be a shame to not get to show it. They therefore turned it into a " 3D museum" to give it some purpose so that they could include it on a game. Sonic World and 3D games highlight the Saturn's inability to render translucent textures, hence the dotted shadows and weird water effects where the ground warps to imitate rippling, but Sonic is always on the "layer" above it as it cannot implement a translucent texture on him.
Saturn did NOT tank. Also, Sonic World was an Early prototype build of a new Sonic project already being planned for Sega Black Belt at the time. Sonic Team briefly considered doing a Saturn title called "Sonic RPG" in 1996, but by the time Sonic Jam was released in the Summer of 1997, Sonic Team had already gotten involved in Project Katana.

So they had somehow a way to get the assets from Sega of America for the box arts, but not to get the alternate Sonic CD Intro nor any US commercials? Come on now. Also wow, I never knew the file select remix from Generations was a reremix from this.
Maybe they thought it was redundant to have the exact same opening and ending animations with a different track, or maybe they run out of disc space and had to save it for something else.
Holy crap I love all those old commercials for the Sonic games and Sega consoles and handhelds! Life was simpler back then. Games were better. No internet required to play games, no updates, just pure fun. 😔
That wouldn't make sense that would have made sonic and knuckles twin instead they made sonic one year older of knuckles that's how sonic team and sega made them
Well to be fair, it’s quite a shame we never got the sonic extreme game or anything like that But we did get 3 sonic games for Saturn which pleases us, even if they were that bad
This was when the console wars were still happening and this was Sega’s answer to the n64 despite selling less units then the n64 I still think the graphics look better then the n64
You know, some of these Games and Game Gear ones ACTUALLY MADE IT IN Sonic Gems Collection (exception to Knuckles Chaotix). I don't know why they didn't include that one. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic Gems Collection.
Tbh, it’s near-impossible to decide (maybe Sonic Jam?) because both original mainline Mario/Sonic trilogies are incredible, like the compilations themselves for being the best of their kind!
the Sonic adventure was going to be made from these graphics on the sega Saturn, but when the Dreamcast was released it was modified to a better engine, but even so, so that the work would not be lost They made this game from what had been done in the Sonic adventure prototype
Imagine if they included this on the Saturn Mini, with all the history, cutscenes, and manuals. But two of the games are switched. Sonic 1 with Tempo from the 32X and 2 with Knuckles Chaotix. 3 and Sonic & Knuckles stays since they didn’t put them on either the genesis Mini 1 or 2.
You know, the Sega Saturn did not have a new Sonic game, Jam does not count because it's a collection of Genesis games, and the Saturn only had Sonic R. The 3d aspects of Sonic Jam prove that a 3d Sonic game on the Saturn was possible, but it makes it seem like wasted potential.

I think that Sonic Jam was made with the Japanese market in mind, since all the commercials in the game are the ones that aired in Japan and there are no USA and Europe commercials. In addition, the Japanese probably weren't as focused on edginess, polygons and "blast processing" as Americans were.
@@thesmilingman7576 Maybe so, but in Japan, _Sonic the Hedgehog_ was nothing more than a neat mascot for a neat console made by a company which positioned itself as futuristic, or at least that's how the general public perceived it. _Sonic the Hedgehog_ was not needed on the Sega Saturn in Japan and, apparently, most people did not know what _Sonic the Hedgehog_ was. Despite this, _Sonic Jam_ was released in Japan before the United States of America.

I love sonic, who agrees
Me
2d sonic/ 16 bit age sonic is hard for me. i perfer 3d sonic game
DoctorGrievous1987 I agree with your comment.
Ash Gamer I like your TH-cam logo.😀😀
@@pixelfan2290 your logo Is cool too
Amazing graphics for 1997!!! N64 and PSX cant do this colorfull graphics and high res texture.
The fuck you talking about?
Those were capable of doing even better than this crap.
Correct!
Fernando Cañas might not be as good as those guys, but still looks quite nice
Saturn was never put to the test on what it could probably do in my opinion
[14:05] The “200t“ looks like “2001“, which foreshadows the release of Sonic Adventure 2 and the end of Sega consoles.
And Sega hasn't made a new console since.
:(
Or you're just overthinking it.
Makes me wish we got these versions of the Sonic games. Mainly since the OST does take a hit due to the limited memory on the Genesis originals when picking up rings or hitting an enemy. I can hear both the music and not have it sound like it glitch on you.
i had this. must say the anime intro was the best ever, that song was so good as a kid
I FOUND IT! I CANT BELIEVE I FOUND IT...I have been looking for this game and forgot what the heck it's called and omg I thought I made it all up in my head...inconceivable that it is real
Man, if I ever get lucky enough to get a Sega Saturn, I’ll definitely have to add this gem to the collection!
This game controls awesomely using a 3D Pad for Sonic World, I highly recommend it, the analog stick works perfect.
0:52 Neo South Island Zone
Widely considered the greatest Sega game of all time.
Super Street fighter says high 👋👋👋
Sonic 3, sonic mania, sonic CD sonic adventure, sonic adventure 2, sonic adventure 2 battle, sonic 2, sonic rush
@@NuLORD66 street fighter is a capcom game...
@@alexos8741 and?it was still a Sega game.
Jet Set Radio Future says Hi 👋
So they had somehow a way to get the assets from Sega of America for the box arts, but not to get the alternate Sonic CD Intro nor any US commercials? Come on now.
Also wow, I never knew the file select remix from Generations was a reremix from this.
PAL got shafted more. We didn't even get our game manuals.
Maybe they thought it was redundant to have the exact same opening and ending animations with a different track, or maybe they run out of disc space and had to save it for something else.
The animation in “Sonic: The Man of the Year“ reminds of Animaniacs (1993) for some reason.
It's possible the animators from the show made this animation.
I rlly want to see the rest of that
One of the best Sonic games ever
Loading screens in this game feel so odd.
This is how I first played these games! I never finished them since I’d spend most of the time in the world looking at the art and movies lol
Holy crap I love all those old commercials for the Sonic games and Sega consoles and handhelds! Life was simpler back then. Games were better. No internet required to play games, no updates, just pure fun. 😔

WAIT HOLD UP-
THAT CHICKEN'S NAME THO-
Remove the c-you know what,i'm not doing this
Nostalgia...
They really made Sonic older than Knuckles, couldn't they have just been the same age?
That wouldn't make sense that would have made sonic and knuckles twin instead they made sonic one year older of knuckles that's how sonic team and sega made them
I think you need to do a longplay of conker bad fur day
Well to be fair, it’s quite a shame we never got the sonic extreme game or anything like that
But we did get 3 sonic games for Saturn which pleases us, even if they were that bad
2:11 also........why is that so familiar?
@friggy same. I thought it was fantastic
@friggy Nah I think both of them are best
Sonic Adventure was going to be a Saturn game.
@@mason2978 oh yeah I heard…but then. It got moved to the Dreamcast
Shame that they never used the 3d engine to create a sonic 3d game.
An Underrated Gem. Glad I got my copy for very cheap
Just a playground for die hard Sonic fans to mess around and see cool little pieces of the franchise we love, seems good enough for me
This was when the console wars were still happening and this was Sega’s answer to the n64 despite selling less units then the n64 I still think the graphics look better then the n64
LOL! @ The Sonic commercials :P
What’s funny is all those character design drawings are in sonic origins and so is the sonic world theme.
7:04
even in Sonic Jam, this song feels motivational
I never knew sonic was 16. I also never knew Knuckles was 15. *I learned a lot.*
Ikr I thought sonic was a kid or something then sega revealed knuckles and sonic was born in the 70s and tails in the 80s
Google be saying sonic 30 year old when he actually 40 something years old
The animation of the sonic video at 5.45.23 are just crazy look like anime manga idk it's just wonderful
Wow this game had a concept art gallery? Thats some ahead of its time shit!
Dude i adore the roll sound effect
The startup bro the SoNiC jAm
Hey! It's the guy who owns sonic jam!
You know, some of these Games and Game Gear ones ACTUALLY MADE IT IN Sonic Gems Collection (exception to Knuckles Chaotix). I don't know why they didn't include that one. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic Gems Collection.
Me and my friends would have loved this no joke, dang what could have been.
This makes me want a Saturn
Is this the last Sonic Compilation where Sonic 3 has the entire original sound track including the Michael Jackson songs?
Sonic Classic Collection on the DS is the very last one.
What is better?
A) Super Mario All-stars.
B) Sonic Jam.
B
This aged like fine wine.
Tbh, it’s near-impossible to decide (maybe Sonic Jam?) because both original mainline Mario/Sonic trilogies are incredible, like the compilations themselves for being the best of their kind!
Both have soul
B
Sonic team is a great sega allies companies.
I wonder what a full Sonic game would have looked like with this engine.
the Sonic adventure was going to be made from these graphics on the sega Saturn, but when the Dreamcast was released it was modified to a better engine, but even so, so that the work would not be lost They made this game from what had been done in the Sonic adventure prototype
The way it sounds when you hit a boss...was Jam used for at least some of the Genesis game footage in Mega Collection's "History of Sonic" video?
Imagine if they included this on the Saturn Mini, with all the history, cutscenes, and manuals. But two of the games are switched. Sonic 1 with Tempo from the 32X and 2 with Knuckles Chaotix. 3 and Sonic & Knuckles stays since they didn’t put them on either the genesis Mini 1 or 2.
I love the compression of some of the sounds, it reminds me of the compression of flash games
1:48 hello in the water plis help me
When I lost Sonic 2 and found it years later I wanted this game for my sisters Sega Saturn and I played sonic world
14:30 what we could have gotten in the sonic movie
So this was just basically Sonic Mega Collection before it was a thing.
Sonic Mega Collection: Sega Saturn
Tagline: HE. IS. BACK!
Not quite, It did come out as a full game we know called Sonic Adventure
@@hunterkrovac Didn't Sonic Adventure come out on the Dreamcast, not the Saturn?
@@DEV-gz2eu Yes but Sonic Jam's Sonic World was a beta of Sonic Adventure. Notice that during the Tornado level, Sonic's model is still Sharing the Saturn model
@@hunterkrovac That being said, I don't think that counts as being a new Sonic Game for the Saturn. Glad we got some of Adventure out of the game though.
They tried to make another Sonic game for the saturn Xtreme did get canceled but they did plan on releasing it so I don't think it's really wasted potential
One of the Best Sonic games
Dang if I had this I would try to challenge myself to race around the level and act like i'm playin sonic r lol.
02:11 I wished that this part was in modern sonic games, the music is so beautiful...
I remember hearing a variation in Generations
The original Origins?
Boy... this is *so much better* than Sonic Origins, Ik Ik, there's no Sonic CD in it, but at least it is a *better* port.
In Origins you can retry the special stages which is a god send with sonic 2
If you play sonic world in sonic jam, you are playing the prototype of sonic adventure
Imagine Sonic World remade in Sonic Origins
Is that the Sonic model from Sonic R?
No
Just realized the Sonic Generations museum music came from the museum in Sonic Jam
Labyrinth Zone! 😲
I think that Sonic Jam was made with the Japanese market in mind, since all the commercials in the game are the ones that aired in Japan and there are no USA and Europe commercials.
In addition, the Japanese probably weren't as focused on edginess, polygons and "blast processing" as Americans were.
Wasn't Sonic supposed to be the anti Mario
@@thesmilingman7576 Maybe so, but in Japan, _Sonic the Hedgehog_ was nothing more than a neat mascot for a neat console made by a company which positioned itself as futuristic, or at least that's how the general public perceived it.
_Sonic the Hedgehog_ was not needed on the Sega Saturn in Japan and, apparently, most people did not know what _Sonic the Hedgehog_ was.
Despite this, _Sonic Jam_ was released in Japan before the United States of America.
I am glad that they actually putted the ads in this game. I was looking for them for so long in a good quality. I feel super nostalgic for the old MegaDrive ads.
Most of them on youtube are old uploads from the time when 360p was considered HD.
