these incidents angers me more than feeling upset for them . they can arrange 190000$ to leave the country illegally which is quite decent for living a upper middle class life in India. They could have built on that money and could have prospered. but NO!! they want to travel illegally to a western land and clean toilets, was dishes and drive cabs. just pathetic & dumb decision. Sad ending for the kids !!😔....and yes i agree with kristen that US did provide better opportunities but other countries and India is improving their game as well.

    18:13 Exactly...
The desperation and intent with which they work hard and are even ready to clean the toilet in the USA, if they had the same in india, they can also make good living in india...
I know for indians, dollars are higher in value and we also believe in saving it as opposed to most Americans... So that we can make money faster as compared to India... But they should think of growing the nation...
And here in india we look down to the cleaning and all those kinda work... But just bcz no body knows them in foreign land, they are okay to do cleaning and stuff in foreign land...
They should have "the india dream" in mind to make india a better place...
I have sympathy for them due to what happened to them... And at the same time I also think that it's the fullish decision to do it at that much of risk... As if there is a jackpot waiting for you at the USA border...!!
A legend indian Hockey player Dhyanchand, when offered to play form Germany by Hitler, he told that "it's not my country's duty to give me something, it is my duty to give something to my country"..

The only thing that's bugging me about this story is why wouldn't they just stay in Canada and try to make a life there first, specially when they had arrived there legally? The explanation that there's a better community in US doesn't make much sense as there are pretty big Indian communities living in Canada too. I understand Kristen's point that US is often considered to have better opportunities but they had a 3 year and a 11 year old with them, no sane person would never risk their children's life like that.

More than opportunities and the India-US difference, I think this is a story of what society and peer pressure can do to you. The people in this family's village were so sold on their American Dream because of the few people who had success there, that for them the only way to progress and social prestige (and hence happiness) was getting to America in any way possible.
As many people have pointed out that 1.5 Cr is a comfortable amount to get by in India, they are actually right. I have seen people live a decent life on less. (Hell, I have been living one for some years now, with no steady income :P). So, ideally, getting to America was NOT a life/death situation for them, yet it became one.
Very often I have seen societies and people around me form this set formula for success and happiness, and if somebody does not follow that track, everybody just starts to think that life is over for them. It's often like "If you do not do this (get married/ get to the US/ get into a good engineering college etc etc.), your life is worthless." And this pressure often kills people, whether in the case of student suicides or immigrant deaths like this one.
Looks like all this family needed to be happy was to get away from their village; to a place where people do NOT move to the US and are still happy. There was absolutely no need to move that far away. And it's sad, not just for that family, but for that society too which promotes these impossible dreams.

People won't like my pov but if you have assets worth 1.32 Cr AKA $190,000 there are not 10 but at least 50 ways to better your life and your family life.
People would hate me but it just feels like they were trying to find a shortcut. They wanted better life than others in their town rather than just focusing on better life for themselves. Which is one of the thing that most Indians are huddled around. Everyone in my class group of engineering wanted to give GRE goto US and work there and settle if possible.
Meanwhile I just finished my masters and returned started my own things, didn't work right before covid but still I have better job than I would have expected without my masters..

Yes this is a true story for many asians too I don't know why they make the USA the center part of the world. India has everything you want to live a happy life with just people's mindset is the problem and of course we need to change some constitutional rules in case of safety and corruption. I love being born in India and never leave my country, every country has its own fault even in the USA you never know when you get killed in a random school or in a mall even in a concert because of gun violence. And People never show the poor side of the USA where people live on the roads too. 😅😅😅 We need to make that dollar down 😂😂 and make our own currency shine then only we can destroy that American Dream. It's difficult but not impossible.
And I wanna say here to people who think the USA has a great entertainment industry and they are making good money out of it hello Tiktok made by a Chinese company and most content you are doing is asian, mostly Indian 😅 and keep feel proud of being American cause you never get looted for more than 200 years and mostly Asian and European people doing the technical works in USA. I Don't think that the USA is great.

The Gujrati family was doing okay, if not very good. But pressure from society made them took this wrong path. When I heard the news first time I was equally sad and angry. Instead of taking risk of going with all family the man could have spared his family. He knew he would try to enter US illegally, why taking risk for his infants? Selfish person's greed killed his family. Unfortunately human beings are being controlled by greed so much that they cannot simply think that they are risking their lives.

They spent $190'000 to die. They could've spent half that on a business in India and lived a happy life. Sorry but it's hard to feel bad for people who knowingly put their families at risk. They were not fleeing from genocide or persecution, nobody in India is. This just makes me sick to my stomach.

14:15 there is a big correction of immigration waves. First wave started in 1960s was not actually a brain drain. They came on Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 where US allowed non European origin to enter in the country. Just like how European people migrated in the USA during 1900s, same way non European people came in with mix of rules and quotas. These folks later sponsored their rest of the families. Also, illegal immigration started during this time and many people(specially Patels/Patidars) from Gujrat entered in the USA via Mexican border along with immigrants from other countries. However, the actual brain drain started in 1991 where US started H1B visa program. They brough this program in as IT industry had just started in the states and using this program, doctors as well engineers(mostly IT professionals) started coming in.

It's not just money but also status. It's also about amassing not generational but societal wealth. And as mentioned in video, these days you won't get bride/groom for your son/daughter if someone in your family isn't in the US. People who don't have relatives in US and sending dollars back home are seen as living off of wealth of society. And you have to understand that in gujarat, specially in Patel community it's not like family for family ... not even joint family but entire village takes care of your family and make decisions for your family. They have their own loan system, own real estate system. Yes it's still greed but also FOMO and peer pressure on steroids.
