Thanks to you I bought one of these Husqvarna Progressive rakers guages. I'm not exactly sure why, but after adjusting the rakers with the Husqvarna, the saw cuts so so much better. I'm guessing the forward angle vs. the flat top, but Wow, what a difference.

The raker is a depth gauge when you file it down you get a bigger bite in the wood.

West Coast Saw makes a good one. The Carlton BBR uses is really hard to find (think they stopped making them.)
Love the closeup viewing angles. Very good tutorial on knocking down the rackers. Makes for one wickedly sharp chain. Awesome demonstration.
I’ve used the Oregon raker gauge for the last 10 years or so.
But thanks to this video, I just ordered one of these Husqvarna raker gauges.

Ordered a pair of the triangle files last night. After seeing you do it, I refuse to be scared to try any longer. Going to start on some old chains to see if I can figure it out.

Thanks to this video, I created a monster hardwood chip throwing machine. Around 25 degree handfiled with .025 rakers. It brought my saw to a place it's never been before. Then, no less than 3 minutes in to bucking, I did something silly limbing and hit dirt 😭 I'll try again tomorrow...

been using the mini c grind that you taught me.makes tota! sense as only the tips of cutters in contact with the wood.leaves the strength and integrity of the lower gullet.and drive chain linkage.gotta get me one of those files and learn something new.thanks again my friend.!ove,light and respect.maddog
Retired English tree surgeon here, thanks Billy for this most interesting video; I've always sharpened using a round file, never seen anyone using a flat file to sharpen before. You've given me something to think about there friend! As to lowering the rakers - that's a job I always hated because of that horrible noise, so again, thanks for the tip to make it less unpleasant.

I never thought sharpening chains could be so frustrating! One of my early days I lost half a day from a clutch cover lock and a tangled chain from the box lol... sometimes I almost feel like it's worth it to just get new ones and put them to the side until you're efficient enough to sharpen on sites

Do the rakers BEFORE you file the chain, you'll dull the tooth while doing rakers. I would always switch sides doing rakers, when cutting 6ft to 8ft diameters my saw would run a little bit. Would also take out gullets to keep the chips flying when cutting big wood. Great to see someone do a great job on the art of hand filin!

Love the sound of a homelite
The west coast saw raker gauge works just like this one and is really nice. I've tried a few and I think it's the best one currently being made.

It’s what my dr.‘a call “tennis elbow”.
That flat style file is easier for a person to see what is happening, but if you are filing the way that you showed on THIS video you should try that triangle style (it’s actually 6 sided though) because you end up with 3 filing edges, not just 2. The flat style is great when you want to also have a file for your depth gauge’s (rakers) but you’ll still need a flat style with you you if you go the 3 sided way. BTW, the 6 sided is what I use. I happy with it so far, but you have to keep a VERY close eye on what your doing with it.

I remember buying Carlton chains from Baileys back 20 years ago. They cost $10 usd each for a 20” chain back then and they came with a file o plate.

Tennis elbow is a real pain. But keep the strap on for a while and it’ll be good to go. Then keep the strap in your pack, so when there’s a twinge, you don’t need to wait until you get home. Look after your body and mind alike.
Those little Carlton gauges are the best, such a shame they don't make them anymore. Virtually impossible to find one produced nowadays with near the quality.

Buckin' I was always taught from a child to file to the tip of the tooth, I've always questioned why and no one could answer why. My brain tells me to file like sharpening a knife and to go the other way, the file doesn't like it at first but it does seem to hold an edge longer and my shindaiwa 757 eats alot more wood.

@@BuckinBillyRaySmith are you always sizing up 1 to file? I’m practicing on a stihl .325 chain using a 13/64 file instead of the 3/16. It’s putting a nice hook in. Do you go 7/32 on 3/8 chain? Get the gullet!

I’ve been using chainsaws since 1990 & never became an expert at sharpening
I always file down. My reasoning is on a microscopic scale you would see burrs on your cutting edge on the up where on the down it would be a sharp edge no burrs. But it really doesn’t matter what ever is comfortable.

Hey Billy, how you doin'? Haven't talked to you for a while. I agree with what you are saying about filing those rakers at an angle, it really makes a difference. The only problem I have is that the ony raker guages we can get are the long ones made by "Oregon Chain" and they have a recessed area that the file goes into and it forces you to file the rakers at 90 degrees. The slot for the file to fit into is only wide enough for the file to fit into and consequently the file cannot be angled. I would sure like to have a raker guage like you use, but if I'm not mistaken you mentioned in one of your video's some time back that those raker guages like yours' are not made any more. So we are stuck with what we have and just have to grit my teeth every time I file the rakers on my chains.
On a side note, I wanted to tell you a story. My brother works for a construction company. They were doing a job last year where they had to dismantle some bleachers at a high school. They were made of wood and they started using the company chainsaw to cut them up with. Ray (my brother) looked at the chain on the saw and he told me there was absolutely no gullet at all in that chain. It wouldn't even begin to cut wood. So he began "Getting the Gullet". One of the guy's walked by asked him what the heck he was doing as the guy could see that he wasn't using the file like you would to sharpen the teeth. Ray told him about the gullet and the guy walked off telling Ray he didn't know what he was doing. After establishing the gullet back into that chain and resharpening the teeth the saw cut that wood like it was butter. It surprises the heck out of me that there are so many people that don't know about the gullet on chainsaw chains and what they are there for.

Buckin' Billy Ray Where can I purchase the "Carlton File "O" Plate. Watching you on your video tells me that for the first in all me years of filing my saws that I have been filing all wrong. So you can teach an "OLD DOG" new tricks. I'm 73 years old and my first saw was a "Homelite Zip" w/ a 24" bar, it belong to my father. Now I run all Husky's, 394, 395 and my favorite is my "3194" w/ a 6' Cannon bar that I use for cutting slabs. After I fie all my saws the "Buckin' Billy way, the first log to slab will be a 60" dia. inch x 16.6" Redwood that I have been saving. Thanks for the great videos.

You have lateral epicondylitis. If you pick up anything heavy have your palm up. Palm down lifting will aggravate it.
