- John Birges Sr's homemade bomb stumped the FBI and all the experts that were brought in to try to defuse it. Harvey's Resort Hotel and Casino near Lake Tahoe thought they were getting a new photocopy machine delivered on 26th August 1980, but turns out, they had just received the most unique and sophisticated improvised explosive devices in American history. This is the full, bizarre story of the bomb, and the man who created it.

The employees seeing the letter, thinking it is a bomb, and hiding behind the actual bomb as they poke what they think is a bomb with a broom is something out of a comedy.

My dad was a bartender at Harvey's when this happened. They got to the perimeter of the evacuation zone, put up lawn chairs, popped open some beers and waited for the big boom. He said it didn't disappoint! Fun Fact: Harvey Gross intended to do a major renovation on the hotel and casino. Imagine how happy he was when insurance paid for the whole thing!

Harvey relieved some of John Sr's gambling debt in return for building the bomb. If you check records you will see Harvey tried to apply for permits before the explosion. Only 750 pounds of the explosives were used then a year later John Sr blew up is sister in laws bridge to their turkey farm.
This channel makes me so happy. This case fascinates me because of the sheer level of engineering genius required to make such a device.
Yeah, its so rare to find a criminal scheme so sophisticated as this one. It really is like something out of a Hollywood movie.

That's a LOT of extra people being told about his bomb plan for literally NO REASON. Like, why would you tell another person all about it, JUST type type a demand letter? Or deliver it? Do it all yourself man, do it all yourself.

@isbestlizard they told it slightly wrong, he didn't tell anybody except his son's about it before it happened, it was on the drive HOME that the other two people were told they just helped plant a bomb lol

I was just coming down to comment on that. That is really cool that he was more concerned about his employees being out of work than his multi-million dollar casino. He sounds like the kind of owner you would want to work for
I mean he does run a business that relies on the suffering of others to make a profit but the employees part is nice
Harvey only made that comment to distract us from the fact that he was fine with his employees potentially losing months of work so long as he could collect on insurance money.
This could have ended very violently if that helicopter pilot had found them and landed

The one story where the Multi-million-dollar business man was actually the cool guy. Didn't give a shit about his hotel being blown up, just wanted everyone to be safe and knew any financial losses would sort itself out. I know that should be the standard of human decency but we all know it's not, especially when it comes to these building owners.

The video with a title "the impossible to defuse bomb" has explanation of why the bomb is impossible to defuse, or even anything about the bomb at all.....
