- I always felt I needed to do something with the tail lights of my Mini R59 JCW Roadster to complete the look. So I have decided to match the lights on my JCW Clubman and fit Union Flag tail lights.
SMPS2012 have two designs to choose from. Smoked Black or Smoked Red. In this video I fit both so you can see the difference and also just how easy they are to install. Follow the links below to order yous...

Yeah red is the way forward. More of a factory finish, more of a subtle mod.
It would match the other red accents of RUBY and their for compliments them 😎
Petrol Ped Red tail lights. They look spot on with Ruby’s red accents.
The red ones simply deliver that 'OEM top of the range' look!! 👍

Great mod, tbh I prefer the red ones on Ruby roadster, they work with the other red details.
Both look cool, but I prefer the red ones. They still looked smoked out, but tie in with the red stripe and details of Ruby.

Both lights look really cool, I personally prefer the red ones as they contrast the black paint nicely, also they match the red graphics and trim on Ruby, stay safe sweetheart.

Hi Pete, I love um both. I reckon because you are not currently driving on British roads I`d say have black on one side red the other leave them on for a week or so, look at them both during the day/night lights on / off and then decide. You can thank me later mate.😊😊😊😊😊

Dead right about the Union Flag. If it's on a vessel, then it's the Jack. And flying it on a vessel, generally donates that it's sinking.
I recall many years ago that there was a Naval Training College somewhere in the South West of the UK and as normal, the base would be called HMS something-or-other.
Well, an old ex naval chap used to live nearby and quite often he'd see that the rookies at the Naval Training College had raised the flag upside down. Which itself is a mean feat as it's toggles and loops on the lanyard. But he'd always ring the adjutants office and very politely ask them, "Are you sinking?" :-))...
It's a tad worrying that the new lights do not have an internal clip. This means that any oik can come along in the middle of the night, and with the trim removed and just three screws unscrewed, the light drops out and hey presto, that oik's run off with your new lights that cost upwards of £150 each!?
Gotta admit that the smoked lights do look better. Especially the way the indicator lights scroll across :-))...

Really late reply but I only just found this video (brilliant by the way!). Just as a correction though, correct me if I’m mistaken, but the Union flag tail lamps actually first appeared on the BEAUTIFUL superleggera concept that was moving forward to full production almost exactly as introduced (sans fin) after it debuted in 2014 at Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este that BMW first approved after intense public interest but subsequently cut short (it was supposed to be fully electric), not the GP concept which came 3 years later. Sadly, of the Superleggera concept the exterior lighting (including the Union flag tail lamps) were the only things that ultimately made it into production in Gen3 models. Sad because the Superleggera concept was MINIs most beautiful design ever.. love your channel!

Red for me, matches the rest of Ruby. You now need to apply black Clubman letters to Charlie! Your skills keep increasing! Keep it up.
Ceefeesh Swim nooo Charley doesn't need any Clubman letters. If you'll remember the OCD of a word with an odd number of letters was annoying Pete as in 4 letters on one door and 3 on the other. That would still affect his OCD if they were black letters.

Red is my preference ( but do like the black ones too on a black n de-chromed car ) i was in two minds on getting black for my car but went for red as my car is white/silver colour & love em.
On my car, the lights are monitored like yours ( some cars do have bulb monitoring disabled i believe thus alot may have no troubles - its the only way i can think that so many minis are floating round with bulbs out as the noises mine makes when it finds a bulb out gets annoying, as do all the various onscreen warnings too ) but even so the bulb monitoring on my car ( a R56 hatch ) gave me no troubles when i fitted these from SMPS back in feb/march time
But i do believe its possible to disable the monitoring of bulbs with a suitable K+Dcan cable & a laptop with suitable software on it ( NCS Expert / NCS Dummy software as an example - currently awaiting my cable to try it out ) - the car checks when you 1st fire up the car even with the lights switched off & also randomly when your driving ( again even with the lights switched off ) to make sure they are still operational etc ( you find this out swiftly when you fit LED bulbs as you get a disco show before the car dash lights up like a xmas tree with the warnings ) alternatives to the laptop & cable method are the Carly / Carista type phone dongle systems ( tried the carista on my mota to try & get the Stop/Start button to have memory of the selected setting & to reset a brake service light but it did not have said options so i returned it before the free trial expired - sadly i never disabled the bulb checking functions it did have though while i had it as it would be rather useful now since i am testing out some LED bulbs at the front & on has come the bulb error warning even though the bulbs are lit fine )

Learned something today re Union Flag vs Union Jack. To my eye the red looks OEM while the black clearly looks "aftermarket". Both look good, and jealous of your weather. Stay safe!

Red is surprisingly nice but I too would go for the black. A very worthwhile mod. How refreshing to hear it referred to as the Union flag. Many people seem unaware that it's only called a 'jack' when flown from a ship. I have an early R50 Mini Cooper and it's a shame no one makes an aftermarket union flag for this model.

You can code out the bulb failure very easily if you get access to Carley BMW app, I had similar problem with my R55 when upgrading to led lamps,

Nice to see the roll of gaffer/ duck / jungle tape in the boot... Essential for ALL vehicles to have a roll of that PLUS a tin of WD40...
Only three tools I know how to use. Gaffer tape, WD40 and a hammer 😜😂
@@PetrolPed On a serious note... Top winter driving tip... Do NOT - EVER- use ordinary WD40 (blue/yellow can) on door seals to stop them sticking. Ordinary WD40 is a petrol derivative and will ROT the rubber seals. Use WD40 Silicon spray - sparingly but often. This is actually advertised as suitable for door seals. It will NOT rot the rubber. (My work here is done! 😉)
Hi Ped, Red imo!! They are still slightly smoked. And goes with the red accents you already have and looks a bit more factory, the black ones look a little aftermarket looking. Both are nice though! 👊

100% correct a union flag can only be called a union jack when flown from a jack staff on a Royal Navy war ship / submarine. If it helps I prefer the dark ones 👍

D I Y Light fitting Pete, Like the back ones because the indicator lights are not so noticeable on the red ones, as the brake lights are the same or similar and other motorists may not notice them as easily. Years ago one of the VW Golf headlights were the same and the lights overpowered the indicators so you didn`t see them easily. Mini rearlights fitted before you changed them seemed odd till I figured that the round chrome bits had orange bulbs in the silly me I thought they were the reversing light till I saw them below.
I totally thought black until you put the red one on. Good to do the comparison. Glad the petrol pups were out for another cameo.

Normaly I would say smoked, because I myself have wrapped the tail lights of my R50 with a smoke wrap, but Ruby's look can take both...the red one's give it a chique look, the smoke one's are more sporty/agressive..difficult too choose in this case which is the best i'm afraid...

My Black version arrived today. Fitted them immediately. They look absolutely amazing on my Red Roadster
Thought the smoke would be perfect but now prefer the red. Matches the red stripes and red centre brake light and fog & reverse surround.
Smoke would work if you could update the centre brake light.
The full murder out would be matt black stripes, hydro dipped carbon arches & refurb alloys in dark chrome.

They both look very smart. Like others have said you'd think the black ones would better suit your car but there's something about the red ones that slightly edge it for me . Whichever you go for they're a definate improvement on the OEM ones.

Red for me. It goes with the red bits against the black body. Plus more visible for drivers behind. Looks great.
I learned some pretty important stuff yesterday at the Dyno - thought I'd share - #1. If you up the boost on an older R53 with all the pulleys than your likely to blow off your old fuel pressure regulator vacuum line causing a lean condition ( get new vacuum lines and zip tie them on) #2. If you get an aftermarket intercooler and think those colored snoot boots look cool and you want to use them - just dont - They suck big time and blow up like balloons that could pop, under full boost (use the stock snoot boots) we got 200hp at the wheels

That should ensure a few orders! If you ever watch Simon at Powerful U.K. who has a video channel, he supplies a multitude of Land Rover upgrades and I have discovered just how universal those plastic clips and fitting are..they appear to come apart repeatedly without trouble so must be stronger than they look. He does sort out lots of electrical quirks like the error codes you saw. Maybe he could give advice to the people making your new lights? Good work again Peter..see you again tomorrow. 🙂🙂🙂🙂Richard

If You correct the resistance from the aftermarket light to the original the light in the dash should disappear (wouldn’t know no other way to check this) and yes they both look awesome. Definitely black on ruby 😎
Just needs some fluffy dice hanging from the mirror and the blue sun-visor tape on your windscreen with your names on it. :)

Red! I just don't think the smoke ones set the car off in the same way whereas the Red ones ties in beautifully with your red accents and are more OEM! :)
Really wish these would come in addition flag designs. Being Canadian, I'd love to see a split design of the Maple Leaf.

Love both black & red, however the red looks premium! to match the Union Flag itself & in keeping with original Mini design & spec.

Mini coding ..led bulbs setting daytime ruining lights brightness and loads more depending on what your car has fitted etc .its similar to icarly but no annual subscription.
Now you also need an OBD connector Bluetooth ,our WiFi Connector there not expensive..

You should go for the red ones. They match up with the remaining red on the car. Either that or remove the side decals. However, whatever you do, please move the Ped sticker on the Clubman, put it on the side of the car or the side of the rear bumper. Anywhere but the rear doors. By the way, there's nothing wrong with that toolkit. If it does the job then it shouldn't be mocked.

Union Flag, I went to Cubs and Scouts as well. Bugs me seing upside down union flags, very common sight at F1 races often see lots of spectators "in stress".
When you didnt show finished job with both lights I suspected you had doubts of the black version. Good to see you get your "tool kit" out and tinkering with Ruby.

That was confident DIY Pete, on camera at least, good to see the transformation Sir. Not that it is perhaps essential, but I did wonder if the plastic trim piece holding the original lights in place separates from the units themselves and can be used on the new ones, keeping them in place and perhaps marginally more sealed/water-tight. Red cluster for me, a nice contrast with the other red elements, including the Ped rear sticker, and of course your obligatory Ruby cap when driving. 😉

It’s the smoked ones for me Peter especially when they’re lit up. Union Flag vs Jack ? Definitely the Flag mate. I was a Royal Navy Cadet way back in my teens - blimey that was a very long time ago !! I think someone mentioned the OBD code app further down that you can download to reset the warning light.

Oooo tricky choice. Before you fitted them I thought the black would be the ones - but the red just seemed to blend better with Ruby’s red accents. Like the animated indicator touch. 👍

I learnt the same as you regarding the Union Flag at school, scouts etc.
As for the lights.... wow! cracking units. As you have fitted both, I think I would have gone for Red units though as I thought they looked a little more OEM and complimented the red elements of the car.
