I’ve had two 2006 Cooper Ss. They were always a blast to drive and getting a supercharger reduction pulley always made them sound even better.

2nd gens Minis (2007 to 2013 roughly) are known to be bad, with those issues plus infamously weak timing chain guides that will grenade engines if not addressed promptly. The first-gens (2001 to 2006 roughly, up to 2008 for convertibles) that the video talks about have a different, more robust engines and are overall more reliable (though they run into old car problems now). 3rd gens (2014+) are known to be overall very reliable, the main known issue being the weak engine mount.

2006 and earlier mini’s especially the S are much better than the new ones in most ways. I am biased as i have a 2006 mini s john cooper works car and it has really been flawless since new. Other than service (or in my case over service..oil is cheap insurance) it has needed nothing at all other than tires. My advice is stick to the R53 first gens and you will be happy.

My daughter bought a 2005 Mini Cooper base model back in August of 2021. My wife and I did not even know she was going to do so. We were in Wyoming hiking in the Grand Tetons on vacation for two weeks. My Ring app goes off and for shits and giggles I opened it. 2000miles away from home. That’s when I saw a red Mini Cooper pulling into our driveway. I laughed pretty hard. Our daughter snuck off with grandpa to buy a stick shift 2005 Mini Cooper that she could not drive because of the stick shift. LOLzzzzz. So I started heckling them through the Ring app from atop of a mountain. LOLzzzz. It was funny and a great memory. Car had only 50,000 miles. Surprisingly it’s been very reliable for her as she commutes 1hr each way to college. I admit. It has made me want to buy a stick shift Mini Cooper S. They are super fun to rip around in.

Bought a Mini Cooper S convertable. Put colder plugs, heavy wires, MSD ignition smaller pulley for the supercharger. I was sold on the convertable because of the sunroof myself, 33mpg 134 mph cut off from the factory. Retuning the computer for "BETTER" performance. My only complaint was no installation in the top, took it to St. Pete several times from Tennesse loved it. Going through Atlanta was GREAT fun---i put it in places other cars couldn't.

I had a mini Cooper s for a little while, 6 speed, manual supercharged, high mileage car, it was fun, but man was it sketchy when close to the edge, I spun it out a high speed on a bumpy corner, I didn't hit anything, but that was it for me. I sold it the next day

I made money when i sold it because i was able to pick my one up right before the prices sky rocketed…i also sold it because i moved to a different area cuz i got a job and my parents didn’t want to drive it and i couldn’t afford it anymore to keep it with my salary. That transmission story sounds amazingly similar to my move from Idaho Falls, ID to Charleston, SC. I had a '80 Chevy C-10 with 250 I-6 and 3MT- the ol' "3 on the tree". We also had a 24' travel trailer that we lived in up in Idaho. We towed it from Orlando FL to Idaho Falls in Dec '81 and back to Charleston in July '82. We made it to Moab ok, and continued on US-191 towards Monticello, when the 3MT started popping out of gear. I was able to coax it back into gear when eventually, 3rd gear gave up the ghost. I downshifted to 2nd, slowed down and made it about 15 miles north of Monticello when 2nd gear started popping and grinding and then gave out. Now, I'm down to 1st and reverse. I babied it though Monticello, turned on US-491 to head east to an RV Park I had made a reservation at. We made it to the park, although the trans was popping out of 1st by now. My wife jumped out of the truck and ran into the office to tell them I needed a lot to pull through. the owner directed me to a pull-through lot and I barely made it there. Once I disconnected the trailer, the truck was done- no gears, not even reverse. Fortunately there was an AWESOME repair shop in town that sourced me a heavy-duty 4MT with a granny gear, made the swap and 2 days later, we were on our way again. Devon's Auto Repair in Monticello, UT got a Christmas card from me and my wife every year since until they finally closed shop a few years ago.

I always wanted a clubman.. got majorly screwed by the person I made the deal with. I was to get a clubman and couple s models for parts in exchange for a fully restored cabin cruiser with 350 motor..
I never ended up getting all the cars nor the documents to go with them.. time goes by and now coast guard calls about an abandoned boat.. headache becomes bigger. Had to prove I no longer owned it and sign off on documents clearing me of abandoning the boat.. I tried tracking the person I traded with down and had no luck.. was stuck with a clubman I couldn't do anything with and one parts car. Had to strip them and scrap them to get some kind of value back..
Don't think I'll ever be serious about a clubman again..

😂 I love my ‘05 R53 S and it’s always hilarious to see how WILDLY different experiences can be. IMO, it almost always comes down to buyers not researching and having uninformed expectations.
I’d personally always avoid the non-S models, but I’m not a mom looking for something cute that has space for kids. I wanted a go kart that I could maintain/upgrade myself and get super speeder tickets in, and that’s exactly what I got. 😂🤷🏾‍♂️
Treat ‘em ike a project/track car, and you’ll be happier in the long run. If you’re not willing and able to work on your car yourself, you’ll go broke paying labor fees. If you’re not willing to do part research, you’ll go insane when the replacement CV axle you buy is somehow half an inch too short or too long even though it was labeled & sold for your model year 😭

In my years I have yet to see any redeeming value from this automobile. Every one who bought one that I know has lost thousands of dollars maintaining them. Handles like a go cart, yes. Destroys your kidneys with that horrendous ride? OH YES

Thats why I run dodge trucks... even when something goes wrong, it always gets me home. This is really a cool story of how a dodge just doesn't quit.

You've never pulled the parking brake and done donuts? The secret if you don't want to wear down your tires is to steal two plastic trays from McDonald's and slip them under the back wheels.
