    You need between 40 to 60% antifreeze in your engine. Too little the engine can freeze, too much the engine can over heat, you need the water to conduct heat. It is best to dilute 100% antifreeze with distilled water. Tap water leaves mineral deposits within the engine. You can buy premix 50-50 antifreeze. The hose is a bypass hose, is a higher stress right off the water pump. I would definitely have at least one on board. The hose that failed was probably ballooned out under load, should be periodically visually checked. Engine off it should not be soft.

    Something you might want to think about is buying some of that emergency repair tape. It does actually work for most repairs although a spare is better. But if you are in between stops without a spare…it’s good as an emergency backup.

    Good work. One spare I would not carry on a boat is coolant. Water works just fine, so you can always get to where you are going. It's only a problem if it's going to freeze.

    Stuff like the broken cooling hose elbow breaking on you is the kind of things that happen on a boat. "Thanks Be to Bob! I've known people like him that stock extras of every single part that can fail on a boat. Kudos as well to Elliot who figured out the problem and how to successfully make repairs. BRAVO ZULU on that. So glad that it wasnt anything more serious than that.

    When I changed all of the coolant hoses on our boat last year, I kept all of the old hoses as "emergency" spares. When I change hoses again, I'll rotate the spares. Throw out the oldest ones.

    Formed coolant hoses are typically weak because the manufacturing process stretches the rubber. You can use a longer hose and make a large half a figure eight loop as long as it is supported so it remains level.

    Definitely never take a part off your boat. If it has any life left in it.😅 I got a wooden hammer, handles cut and 3 inch , Rubber hos Plugging Exhaust manifoldoff the bottom of my manifold plug., You learn a lot from that experience with that Rubber hose😊. I'm running on lakewater.

    Unfortunately, in boating you typically learn things the hard way, i.e. when things fail. If you boat long enough you learn to keep spares for many things/parts on hand. Usually, good to have two. then as soon as you can replace the part you used. You mentioned the previous owner "Bob"..., my guess is that he stocked up on spare parts based on his experience. You guys are learning as you go, which all boaters do. Hang in there! Your journey is amazing.

      1. I strongly suspect that was not smoke but steam.
      2. Running the engine after the hose burst and running it to drain the coolant might have been a serious mistake in the long run. Overheat causes damage that may not show up for some time. If the break was in the seawater side of the system the coolant would give you some time but hot spots can occur when coolant is absent. A temp alarm means shut it off.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, yes that was most likely steam instead of smoke. We drained the coolant after the engine cooled down when we returned to the Marina that evening, so I doubt there was any risk. Cheers!

  • @mikepech6822
    @mikepech6822 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thumbs up guys for using your heads instead of going into panic mode. Here is a tip for you. Always keep 4 things on your boat. 3 or more bottles or tubes of super glue. baking soda, steel wool, and gorilla tape. If you don't have spare parts, clean crack and outside of hose and sand enough to just rough it up. Jam just enough steel wool in crack without blocking pipe flow. Brush on super glue and while is still wet pour on baking soda. It dries like concrete. Sand it to smooth it and repeat with glue and soda and sand when dry again. Then wrap in gorilla tape to an inch or two past where the crack was and will get you to a marina.
    That minus the tape will repair deck and hull damage and if needed will secure a patch. In some cases will help with a broken bolt.
    I don't know what your plans are after the loop. But from what I've seen of you three, it will be something adventurous. But you need to take Ollie's likes. Don't think will like paragliding across North America.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  ปีที่แล้ว

    we had a scare like you on our boat and like Linda ours is a Layland Bedford diesel motor from 1942, our main line for water coolant got clogged, and had to do the exact same thing. pull things apart to find the clog but yeah the heart pounds when that happens and the mind just goes into diagnostic mode. nice to see cool heads all around and forward thinking from Bob!!!

    Are you using coolant that is pre-mixed to 50% water? Or are you using !00% coolant? If the latter, you might research this topic.

    How did you manage the 2+ gallons of coolant in the bilge?

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of it auto-pumped with our bilge while we were diagnosing, and if anything was left over when we got to the dock, we used rags to remove it. A lot of it didn't go into the actual bilge because it sprayed out into the port side reservoirs that don't drain, those we had to get manually.
