  • To order American Bresse chicks

A lot of people tell you not to order hatching eggs from eBay, especially in the winter but we really wanted to hatch eggs with our son and want to start an American Bresse chicken flock. So we tried it anyway.

I have bought button quail eggs and chicken eggs from eBay sellers. The button quail eggs were arranged in a tiny egg carton and packed with aspen shavings, and the whole bundle wrapped in a bubble mailer. Then it was packed in a box with more rolled up bubble mailers. There were two eggs that had hairline cracks in them, but I only saw them because I candled each egg before setting them. I got five extra eggs. They were from Burton's Pirogue Aviaries and we had a 11/20 hatch rate. I would buy eggs from this seller again for sure.
The chicken eggs were from a different seller. They were individually wrapped in double layered bubble wrap sleeves and placed in a box with a massive amount of shredded newspaper. There was a layer of bubble wrap in the bottom and in the top. The box was a bit crushed! Despite the long shipping distance and rough journey, the eggs were not broken. There were a few with saddled air sacs. 6/11 hatched healthy and happy. Out of the eggs with saddled air sacs, only one hatched, and she has a bit of a crooked neck. She's just as lively and funny as the others. There was a chick that hatched with an exposed spinal cord, which had to be put down because it was in a severe amount of pain, and a dead in shell chick with no eyes and a crooked beak. The other chicks that were dead in their shells were positioned upside down. I have no way of knowing what caused the malformation issues, it could be a result of inbreeding or a result of rough shipment. I would also buy eggs from this seller again especially since we only got pullets from this hatch, but we wanted a couple roosters. I'd request that they put cardboard supports in the corners to prevent the box from crushing. I do know that with shipped eggs you usually expect about half of the eggs to hatch if nothing goes wrong with the incubation process itself. For the quail I waited 12 hours before putting them in. For the chickens I waited 24.

50% hatch rate from USPS shipped chicks is pretty good. That is typical. I don't get the 80% unless I pick them up myself fresh.

I agree, I am getting another 4 dozen this week and can’t wait to see how my I can get hatched this time. Do you hatch a lot of chicks?

Awww its so cute how he kissed the egg, and the way they packaged them is good bubble rap is on the side of our box and each individual egg has bubble wrap around it

You should try to wait half a day before putting them in the incubator. It is for the eggs to settle. It should improve your hatch rate.

I've been buying eggs off eBay this year and the warmer it gets during shipping the better the hatch rate (big surprise lol) and most of my Sellers have really outdone themselves on the packing. I really have no fear at all to buy them but at the same time.. it's a risk. I've lost more than I've hatched this year but all I need to make the money back is a good pair from each hatch ;)

What have you been hatching? We have some goose eggs in our incubator right now to get some guard geese. But am planning on getting 56 Bresse eggs for the same guy I got the first Bresse eggs form, the chickens that I got out of his eggs are better than the Bresse chicks I got for a hatchery. Can’t wait to see how many I can hatch out of the 56

@@The.Recreational.Homestead I have been buying pretty much everything, chickens, ducks, guinea, quail, turkey, pheasant, Peafowl, emu.. pretty much everything but geese. I had some Breese that I got from a "barnyard mix" package that hatched really well then a huge pregnant rat found a way in my shed and killed 14 chicks before I caught her so I don't have any Breese or ayam ketawa left now. It's like that rat knew how to pick my favorites and just killed them and left them there for me to find. Next year I plan to do geese but I have my hands full this year lol. Good luck with your hatch! :)

We sell a LOT of Coturnix Quail eggs through the quail side of our farm and our customers always get at least a 75% hatch rate. I know it has to do with the way we package them... we have sent chickens out a few times last year and the hatch rates have been great, but WOW the overhead on the packaging for the chickens eggs is almost too much to make it worth the effort! We STRONGLY recommend letting them sit overnight undisturbed on a countertop before putting them in the incubator - it lets the air cell settle down again to the fat end of the egg.

That's the way a good egg dealer should. I have received eggs every way you could think of and foam is the way to go.

Good Bresse chicks are $10/chick or so. So whatever you paid you got $270 worih of Bresse chicks!! Looks like a deal. Shipping in warmer weather would have increased your haul!! Really good breed and with your incubator you wont need any replacements soon except to introduce new blood to your flock!! Am impressed at Amazon!!

Getting them from Ebay is hard, Not everyone trustworthy. Not all packaged well. Temperture to hot or to cold. then the post office might not break any, but they can shack them up and they will not hatch. This year I went local on the eggs to hatch.

I agree. Now that we are shipping our own chicks I feel like there is a higher success rate shipping chicks vs eggs.
