  • Check out the first part in our series on the big shop move. We get in the old shop and clear out a ton of material. And we head over to the new shop and start busting down walls!

Yeah unfortunately I was kind of in a pinch and just needed to get rid of it. I would prefer to give it away for sure in the future.

Nice good move to open space do not put in posts for electric, but rather have drops installed when and where needed from ceiling you will be thankful as shop evolves and you move or add equipment as floor is open with no issues for location of equip/tables, etc. When funds are avail. I recommend led high output flourescent like replacements as one can never have too much light. I would also install a retractable track ceiling to floor curtain for a paint booth at exit for easy ventilation that's movable and stores out of the way when not in use, you will be thankful for an area that allows finishing w/o having to buff out dust particles and contaminate other items in your workspace from spraying and can be used for large sanding/ finishing operations. Thanks for the input. A lot of good ideas. I have decided I am not going to leave any posts for electrical and will just do drops from the ceiling. Also I have a full spray room in here in the back corner. I have a custom spray booth on order!

Its just that Moveable curtains allow you to use spray booth as general floor space for the 95% of the time you do not need a spray booth and moveable curtains are cheaper than walls to install saving you money as well. Good luck with your new facilities increasing your efficiency will more than pay for the new location. Ray Stormont@@NE_woodworks

I bet if you posted up a single ad on FB marketplace, you could get people to remove all that scrap for you and maybe get some cash from it. Shoot, i know several hobbyist woodworkers that would take the majority of that off your hands quick.

I am only 5 mins in and i dont think i want to watch anymore. It is disgusting that you just dumped all that wood. sure it was no use to you, but if you put it out there, you would have had a dozen people willing to come and collect it from you. they probably would even do the cleaning up for you just to get it for free. That is a 1 year or more worth of wood for a hobby woodworker to use. That was hundreds of dollars worth of fully usable wood just trashed because it was convenient to do so. i hate people like that. Sure you dont need to keep every little bit that could be used for the smallest thing, but a lot of that wood was still good for building many different things. such a waste its worse that the big box stores policy for trashing good wood. Whats worse is you possibly just taught your kids to just throw away what is inconvenient to them without considering its worth or potential to someone else.

You’re not a cabinet maker are you Paul. The scrap gets out of hand quickly. You always think you will use it but never do. It costs money to toss it so I would rather give it away but nobody wants it

I’m a 2 car garage hobbyist. The amount of hardwood scraps I put out to trash pick up every week would piss you off Paul. Putting an ad waiting for people to show up. It builds up to fast and takes up to much space for a 2 car garage. I need it gone ASAP so in the trash it goes

Im not talking about the sort of scraps an average hobbyist would have at hand. The shear size of his "scraps" and the volume that he threw out, could have built someones kitchen for them. Obviously i am not talking about the sort of custom kitchen he as a cabinet maker would build, but someone that is quite happy to compromise on things so that they can build it themselves for next to nothing with free wood. As a hobbyist maker, 90% of what i make is built using wood that i have salvaged out of the bin from the big box stores around me. Thrown out just because it doesnt meet their standard for a saleable product but still perfectly fine wood that most would happily buy at a discount instead. It is actually quite disgusting how much gets thrown out because it has a few scuff or dings in it. Even though i am happy to get the wood for free, its hard to turn a blind eye to how wasteful it is. I would love to find a cabinet shop where i could collect the scraps form them, and i am far from the only one out there looking. I find it very hard to believe that you couldnt find someone to come and collect it from you. Sure it may mean put it aside somewhere out of your way for two days before the person can come and collect it, but is that really such an inconvenience for you not to trash perfectly good useable wood and help out your local makers at the same time? It makes me question how much you actually try to get someone to come and collect it from you. If you are a business that has large amounts on a regular basis it should be even easier to find people to take it off your hands.
